Let’s Keep the Momentum Going
Carolyn Noack
As we turn the calendar page to the month of October, it brings
to mind many things including football games, school carnivals,
church bazaars, pumpkins, costumes, candy and Halloween.
For members of Executive Women International, October
means it’s time for new officers, directors, and committee chairs
to take office. For me personally, it means I am honored to
serve as your 2014-2015 President and look forward to
working with each of you.
Last year under Kori Peters’ leadership, EWI of Houston set the
bar high for the biggest and best chapter in the organization
with a record-setting fundraiser and the number of quality
professional development speakers. We hope to keep that
momentum going for our 2014-2015 year. We are counting on
the support of all our representatives, including our Sustaining
Members who were so active on the Program and Fundraising
Committees last year. We hope each of you will follow their
lead and get involved with your committees. We know you will
be glad that you did. You have a unique opportunity to explore
the depth of knowledge and experience that only EWI of
Houston can offer its members. In turn, you can share your
special gifts with other members. It’s a Win/Win opportunity.

LCAM 2014 Recap

First of all I would like to say Thank
You EWI of Houston for awarding me
the 2014 LCAM Award and affording
me the opportunity to attend my first
LCAM. What an amazing experience!
Being in Washington D.C., our nation’s
capital, was so exciting! Once we
arrived we were shuttled to our hotel
and checked into our rooms. I was
looking forward to the first time
attendee session. Unfortunately it was
cancelled this year. But no worries.
Everyone was very helpful and gave
me all the info I needed on what to
expect and where to go. We all
gathered in the chapter suite before
going down to the Opening
Celebration. This year’s theme was “Represent You”. And Represent Houston we did,
by wearing our Houston Texans t-shirts. Everyone looked fabulous! We enjoyed dinner
followed by mingling and dancing the night away with other chapter attendees. After that,
it was time to call it a night since Thursday was set to be a full day.
Thursday, September 11 - While Kori, Carolyn, and others attended the Awards
Breakfast, some of us started the day with a White House Tour. We set out on our
adventure to the White House on the Metro Transit rail. We arrived at the White House,
checked in with security multiple times, and started the tour. We were able to see the
preparations for the President’s speech and moment of silence scheduled on the south
lawn in honor of 9/11. Once the tour was completed, we made our way back to the
conference to hear keynote speaker Thom Singer, an expert in branding, positioning, and
networking.
After breakfast, two breakout sessions were made available to attendees. 1. Maddie
Grant, What the Social Media Revolution Means for You and 2. Beth Noymer Levin,
Maximizing Your Verbal Assets: Impactful Communications for Professionals.
Morning sessions were followed by the Scholarship & Literacy Luncheon. At the EWI
Scholarship and Literacy Luncheon, we listened to heartfelt stories of various corporate
scholarship winners.

At the Town Hall Meeting, they reviewed everything that has been taking place at
corporate. Everyone was able to ask questions and express any concerns. The last
meeting of the day was the Delegate Session which was attended by Kori Peters, Carolyn
Noack, Mary Speltz, Donna Gurney, Linda Petticrew, and Shari Schiffman. The EWI of
Washington DC Chapter arranged a dinner cruise aboard the Odyssey Cruise line.
Dinner, a tour down the Potomac River, and dancing was experienced by 300+ LCAM
attendees. I did not attend the dinner cruise but enjoyed dinner with Liz Norwood, Karina
Aguirre, Deborah Jones and Yvonne Mercado at Meiwah restaurant in downtown DC.
We followed dinner with a walk through Georgetown.
Friday, September 12 - The day started off early with the Academy of Leadership
Breakfast featuring Fawn Germer, Hard Won Wisdom. Friday offered two Academy of
Leadership sessions featuring Lori Giovannoni, Emotional Intelligence: Making the
Connection; and Jo Miller, Poised for Leadership: A Roadmap to Break into
Leadership. At the recommendation of several of attendees, I chose Lori Giovannoni’s
session on Emotional Intelligence. She was amazing! I understand she will be at our
Chapter Meeting in November and hope everyone will be able to attend. You will not be
disappointed. Friday evening our Houston Chapter Dinner, which was arranged by
Carolyn Noack, was held at Carmine’s in DC . We were picked up at our hotel by a Limo
Charter luxury bus arranged by Annette Washburn, courtesy of Waukesha-Peace
Industries. After the delicious Italian meal, we were taken on a night tour of Washington
DC sights including a stop and explore visit at the Lincoln Monument. Thank you Annette
and Mr. Pearce for a fabulous evening! I think everyone would agree that we had
wonderful time.
Saturday, September 13 - The Annual Meeting was finally here. This truly was an
experience, and I now have a better understanding of bylaws and how the chapter bylaws
relate to the corporate bylaws. Chapter Delegates are given the opportunity to oppose
and/or support any bylaw changes being presented. Listening to these delegates, I have
the upmost respect for these women and their views. While their oppositions to proposed
changes may not have changed the outcome, their concerns and views were heard by all.
After the Annual Meeting, we had some down time before the Closing Gala. Around 5:00
pm, we met in the Chapter Suite dressed in our finest attire and toasted our 2013-14
Chapter President, Kori Peters. We then went downstairs and took a chapter photograph.
I’m sure our chapter had the most member representatives. During dinner, we enjoyed
the wonderful entertainment featuring Bobby McKeys’ Dueling Pianos. After dinner,
incoming Corporate President Darlene Banogan shared her goals for the year.
The fellowship in EWI is so encouraging and motivating. LCAM was a reminder of why I
am part of such a wonderful and important organization. It’s so nice having relationships
with other chapter and seeing everyone come together as if they’ve known each other for
years.

SEPTEMBER MEETING RECAP

On September 4, 2014, EWI of Houston met at the
Roayl Sonesta Hotel for our Annual Business and
Election of Officers. President Kori Peters, representing
Hilcorp Energy Company, opened the meeting by
extending a warm welcome to everyone.
The business meeting was held first in order to maintain
a quorum. For the benefit of the newer representatives,
Carolyn Noack, representing LINBECK, read the
Principles and Voting Rights. Shelly Labedzki, Sergeant
-At-Arms representing Deloitte Services LP conducted a
roll call and indicated we did have a quorum.
Delynn Walker, representing Texas Southern University, presented the nominations for 2014-2015
Board. All nominees were elected by acclamation. Delynn also presented the 2014-2015 Strategic
Plan. It was unanimously approved by the members.
Shari Schiffman, 2014-2015 Treasurer representing John Daugherty Realtors, presented both the 20142015 Operating and BDCP Budgets. Both budgets were approved.
After the business meeting, Lisa Diaz, representing Morton’s The Steakhouse - Houston Galleria
delivered our invocation. We then enjoyed a delicious meal and had the opportunity to network with our
members and guests.
After dinner, Rebekah Robles, representing Let It Fly Events, L.P., came forward for the much
anticipated drawing for the 4 Staycation Packages as well as the various door prizes. President Kori
Peters closed the evening by thanking everyone who came and wishing them a safe drive home.

HOW TO SURVIVE AND THRIVE AT WORK
It may seem a little simplistic, but in today’s increasingly complex world, a positive attitude is most likely a person’s best survival tool. Oprah Winfrey recently
asked poet Maya Angelou on her 70+ birthday what she had learned in life. Her answer spoke volumes about the power of our attitude and how it affects our
lives professionally and personally. Maya Angelou said this:
“I’ve learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he or she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage and tangled Christmas tree lights.
I’ve learned that even when I have pains, I don’t have to be one.”
Our daily routines are filled with “pains” and pleasures, countless ongoing stimuli, both positive and negative. The way we interpret these stimuli determines to a
great extent how we live our life. Learning to concentrate on the positive brings more joy and resiliency into our life. If we focus on the negative, our lives can
become dismal and disappointing.
However, it’s difficult to stay positive. It’s human nature. Problems at home, illness, inconsiderate co-workers and even tangled Christmas tree lights can distract
our positive focus. Remaining positive is a life-long challenge that takes commitment and work. Those who succeed in consistently focusing on the positive,
have learned how to control their attitude. Here are four suggestions that may help you create a more positive focus.
#1. Focus on what’s positive about your job. People who are consistently negative toward work, are doing a disservice to their co-workers, employers
and themselves. Make a commitment to think, act, and talk about only the positive aspects of your work.
#2. Be a team member and build a reputation for being pleasingly predictable and a pleasure to be around. When we participate as a member
of the team, we gain a feeling of acceptance instead of isolation. We experience the joy of reaching common goals, creating an enjoyable work environment
and the opportunity to deepen work relationships.
#3. Think of your job as a place where good things happen. Thinking of your job as a 40-hour weekly drudgery will add stress to your life. Strive for an
upbeat, good-natured attitude. Remember, some days there won't be a songin your heart … SING ANYWAY! It will lift you up instead of drag you down.
#4. Position yourself for more success by sharpening your people skills.
A negative attitude towards your work can sidetrack your success and negatively influence your personal life. Research shows that 85% of your career and
financial success depends on how well you get along with other people.
Your people skills reflect your attitude about life and can affect your success.
Control your outlook on life and you will win where others fail. Your positive attitude will enhance your life and the lives of others around you. Maya Angelou
also said, “I’ve learned that no matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow. I’ve also learned that people will
forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

FIRM SPOTLIGHT

Two years ago, Jason Kohll, formally VP of
Corporate Development for the Houston
Rockets, and Cathy and Alex López Negrete,
owners of Lopez Negrete Communications, the
largest independently owned and operated
Hispanic advertising agency in the country, got
together to launch Professional Sports Partners
(PSP).
Right from the opening whistle, they set out to
become a dominant force in Texas and grow into
a national brand that would change the way sports marketing is done. Headed up by Mr. Kohll,
PSP offers companies a unique opportunity to dominate market share in their category by
connecting with passionate sports fans that are extremely loyal to their team and the brands that
support them.
PSP has steadily grown their roster from the J.J. Watt/Papa John's endorsement campaign to the
Coaches vs. Cancer ESPN Showcase event. They now have 18 clients across the country
including Sam Houston Race Park, Red Bull, Shell & Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston, BD Global,
and Cricket Wireless to name a few.
And now Kohll has taken on the additional responsibility of heading up Tippit & Moo Advertising
(T&M), another one of five companies that are part of the Lopez Negrete Communications holding
group.
Tippit & Moo is an agile, full-service ad agency that targets the “Total Market.” It’s staffed primarily
by ad veterans who have worked at agencies, big and small, general market and Hispanic
market, on three coasts in the U.S. and in North and South America. Their experience runs deep,

Introducing Carolyn Noack, 2014 - 2015 Chapter President

Carolyn Noack, representing LINBECK, is our 2014 - 2015 Houston
Chapter President. She is the Executive Assistant to Leo Linbeck III,
Executive Chairman and Assistant Corporate Secretary.
Carolyn has been married to her husband, Louis, for over 48 years.
They have one daughter, Lisa. Louis is a CPA and so are his brother-inlaw and two nephews. Carolyn has a brother who lives in Littleton,
Colorado, and a sister who lives in Tomball, Texas. She and her
siblings all graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Houston,
Texas. Carolyn attended the University of Houston as a student in
Interdisciplinary Honors Program with a major in elementary education.
Carolyn attended her first EWI meeting in 1981, two weeks after going to
work for LINBECK. She was excited about what she saw and heard at
that first meeting and knew that she wanted to be a part of such a grand organization. She officially
became a member in 1982 and for the past 32 years has served on all committees, most of them
several times. She was not just a committee member though. She has served as Chairman of the
Bylaws, EWISP, Directory, and Hospitality committees. She has also served as Parliamentarian,
Historian, Director-At-Large, SAA, Secretary, and Publications (Communications) Director.
When asked what committee she enjoyed the most, she replied “Sergeant-At-Arms. It was fun to get
to know all of the members and to help them put tables together”. The position she found most
challenging was Ways & Means, now called Fundraising. “All of my co-workers knew when they saw
me coming I would either be requesting a door prize, a contribution, or asking them to buy raffle
tickets”.
Carolyn attended her first LCAM in 1987 when it was held in Houston, Texas. Since that time, she
has been to most of the LCAM’S across the US and Canada. In addition to LCAM, she has attended
numerous Board Forums, Spring Conferences, and AOL Leaders Summits.
Carolyn is also active outside of EWI. She is currently a member and advisor to the Executive Committee of the Houston Chapter of Young Presidents’ Organization Executive Assistants and served as
its president in 2011 - 2012. She has been president of her community association’s women’s club
and has served as an officer in Women of Rotary. She is also a former Girl Scout Leader.
In her spare time, Carolyn enjoys reading, traveling, shopping, and, of course, Houston Texan football
games. Her family is truly the joy of her life, and she enjoys spending time with them whenever
possible.
Let’s all welcome Carolyn Noack as she embarks on her year as president of EWI of Houston. We are
truly in good hands as we continue in our mission.

Martha Ceballos, representing, ELP Enterprises, Inc., was born in Ft.
Lauderdale, Florida, in 1963. The daughter of Cuban immigrants, Martha
learned early on the lessons which would prove invaluable in her life: love of
family, hard work, perseverance in the face of trying circumstances, and a
strong entrepreneurial drive. This drive was inherited from her late father, a
man who in his lifetime owned many businesses, including an ice-cream
factory, a construction company, and a trucking company.
Martha’s early work experience involved a key management position for 14
years with a Houston CPA firm. She has also owned and operated a small
travel agency for over 20 years. In 1999, Martha’s business focus shifted when
she was presented with a new opportunity. It was during this opportunity that
ELP Enterprises, Inc. qualified as both a minority and female owned
disadvantaged business. With these certifications, ELP Enterprises secured a
contract supplying inkjet and toner cartridge office supplies to a government
entity thus enabling Martha a chance to pursue new growth.
With an eye to the future and a keen business sense, Martha positioned ELP Enterprises for growth through
diversification, increased certification, and exceptional customer service. Until 2009, ELP Enterprises was
strictly involved in supplying remanufactured laser printer toner and inkjet office supplies. Since then, ELP
Enterprises has expanded into completely different product and service industries. ELP Enterprises now
generates revenues through office supplies, LED lighting, and by providing oilfield drilling supplies. These
insightful tactics have diversified ELP Enterprises, thus extending the company’s horizon infinitely and allowing
Martha the opportunity to achieve her personal and professional goals.
Martha lives in Houston, Texas, and has been married to her husband Dan for over 32 years. They have two
lovely daughters, Melissa and Michelle, and a grandson named Austin. Please take the time to introduce
yourself to Martha and make her feel welcome at EWI of Houston.
Mitch Daniels, representing Media Distribuors, Inc., is a visual artist working
in a digital world where his team focuses on results from the empowerment of
video, software, and other technologies. His career path began in 1977. He is
President of Media Distributors, Inc. (MDI Video) which provides custom
solutions for all of its clients. Day to day operations are supervised by Mitch.
He is renowned throughout the Southwest as a business owner, teacher,
mentor, entrepreneur, and an award winning artist in the video production
industry. MDI is recognized for its sterling customer commitment and service.
MDI is conveniently located in the prestigious River Oaks Tower, which is just
southwest of downtown Houston and caters to top corporate clients as well as
recognized social events.
Mitch is a widower and when not working, enjoys volunteering for the Houston
Livestock Show and Rodeo where he is involved with numerous committees
as well as a BBQ cook off team. His favorite pastimes include cruises,
photography, and lunch with friends. Please take the time to introduce yourself to Mitch and make him feel
welcome at EWI of Houston.
