Nashville Jazz Workshop
Nashville’s Community
Center for Jazz
The Nashville
Jazz Workshop is
a nonprofit
organization that
provides our
community with
quality jazz
education in a
non-traditional
setting and
excellence in
jazz
performance.
We accomplish
our mission
through:
• A workshop
environment
where jazz
professionals
pass on their
knowledge &
experience in a
journeyman/
apprentice
situation.
• Classes for
players & nonplayers.
•Performances
to promote
appreciation of
jazz.
NASHVILLE
JAZZ
WORKSHOP
2011 is the Jazz Workshop’s 10th Anniversary as a non-profit and
the 10th Anniversary in its facility at the Neuhoff Complex. The
Workshop has grown so much in 10 years — from two classes and
11 students to over 125 classes and 700 students this past year.
Last year there were 50 performances, outreach events, and jam
sessions. Overall the Workshop reached over 10,000 people
through classes, performances, special events, festivals, YouTube,
and internet radio.
The Neuhoff has also grown in 10 years, and an urban oasis is
steadily taking shape. Tragically, in what was to have been a year of
celebration, the community suffered a grievous loss in the untimely
death of Neuhoff co-owner and visionary Stephen McRedmond.
While Stephen is irreplaceable, the surviving partners are
committed to realizing his vision and moving forward with plans
for development of the complex.
A goal for 2011 was taking NJW to the world. Video was upgraded
through a special fundraising campaign. Audio and video of Jazz
Cave performances are now available on YouTube and internet
radio (Nashvillejazz Radio).
For all its growth in students and audience, NJW remains an
undiscovered gem in Nashville. Jazz is still below the radar
in music city. A goal is to raise the awareness of jazz in
Nashville and let more people know about the cultural
treasures available at the NJW, while building a strong
community and keeping a personal touch.

“In all my travels, playing all over the world, I have
never seen a school
and concert venue
such as this. And it
is more than just
that! It is a
community . . .” --
SNAP ON 2&4
Marvin Stamm
The Snap on 2&4 series takes place in the
Jazz Cave the 2nd and 4th Friday of each
month. Performing artists include local
favorites such as Rod McGaha, Christina Watson, Beegie Adair,
Jeff Hall, and Connye Florance, and visiting artists including
Tamir Hendelman, Andy Laverne, and Marvin Stamm.
CONTEMPORARY JAZZ SERIES
Entering its third year, this series hosted by Rahsaan Barber
features new music from cutting edge artists. Highlights of the
series included Imer Santiago, Evan Cobb, J’Nae, and NJW’s
own Roger Spencer, teaming up with Jeff Coffin, Bill Altvater,
and Dale Armstrong in a program of “deranged standards.”
BIG BAND
In the weeks between classes the Jazz Cave is host to
the Duffy Jackson Big Band. Duffy, a veteran of the
Basie, Ellington, and Hampton bands, brings his charts
and inimitable swing, joined by some of Nashville’s
finest horn and rhythm section players.
An estimated 2,000 people attended one of over 30 NJW performances during 2011.
NEW MEDIA
Highlights from performances in the Jazz Cave are broadcast on Nashvillejazz
Radio, an Internet radio station. Other special features include recordings on
CD by NJW faculty and performing artists. Video from the Jazz Cave can be
viewed on NJW’s YouTube Channel.
• 2,500 people heard Nashvillejazz Radio in 2011
• Over 3,000 people saw NJW YouTube videos.

CLASSES
Evening jazz classes are the backbone of the Workshop. Over 120 classes
were offered during 2011, with over 700 student enrollments.
Improvisation, theory, and literature classes serve instrumentalists and
vocalists at all levels, and history and listening classes are available for
non-musicians and musicians alike. The new “Music City Masters” series
continued, with some of Nashville’s outstanding studio drummers and
keyboard players in the spotlight.
JAZZ ON THE MOVE
This acclaimed lecture-performance series, held at the
Frist Center for the Visual Arts, completed its fifth year
and has created a buzz in the community. The series was
independent of grant support for the first time this year,
supported through patron donations and sponsorships.
Over 1,500 people attended the free Sunday afternoon
performances, which featured Sarah Vaughn, Bill Evans,
and Lester Young, plus presentations by saxophonist Jeff
Coffin (left) and visiting trumpeter Marvin Stamm.
SPECIAL PROGRAMS
Freedom Riders – we were privileged to have a special guest for Black
History Month. Dr. Rip Patton (right), one of the Mississippi Freedom
Riders in 1961, gave a lecture recalling the experiences of Nashville’s
civil rights pioneers, then joined guitarist Geary Moore and friends for a
jazz performance.
Youth Workshop – NJW joined with VSA, TN’s Arts and Disability group, to give a
special workshop for youth on “How to Be a Jazz Musician.”
Young children were exposed to jazz through presentations to
pre-kindergarten classes at Kirkland Elementary School, where
Germaine (left) snaps on 2&4. The Nashville Public Library
presented encore performances of Ellingtown, a puppet show
featuring the music of Duke Ellington, produced with NJW.
Over 2,700 people saw this show in 2011!

Bergmans themselves, in town at the time, were surprise
guests at this magical event!

in conjunction with the annual Octoberfest. In addition, NJW student and alumni
groups perform regularly in the community.
• Monthly jam sessions offer a chance for jazz musicians across the entire
community to network and play.
• NJW groups perform at charity and civic events, including the Downtown Rotary
Club, Tennessee Respite Coalition, and Metro Arts Commission. NJW hosts
groups from the community, including FiftyForward Music for Seniors, Discover
Nashville, and the Red Hat Society “Fantasia in Red.”

STAFF & ADMINISTRATION
Executive Director, Lori Mechem
Director of Operations, Roger Spencer
Development Director, Larry Seeman
Volunteer & Event Coordinator, Monica Ramey
Technical Assistant, Graham Gerdeman
Administrative Assistant, Laurel Davis
Administration is lean, accounting for only 20% of
total expenses. NJW has a large corps of volunteers
who assist with all phases of the operation, including
graphic design, web development, audio engineering,
library, and staffing of events. The many talented and
motivated volunteers let NJW produce events and
programs comparable to much larger organizations.
We started the Jazz Workshop 13 years ago with
two classes, 11 students, and a dream – to teach
jazz to the next generation the way we learned it –
from pros, on the bandstand. It has grown and
become a vital force in the community thanks to
the energy and passion of our students, faculty,
board, donors, volunteers, and
audience. It has also grown because the
community needs a place like this. Music City is
home to some of the finest jazz musicians in the
world, and they need a place to teach, perform,
and interact. We plan to keep this great music
growing in our community and let the rest of the
world know what great jazz we have here in
Nashville!
