President and CEO
At the end of fiscal year 2009 and the
45th year of the Jewish Foundation of
Manitoba, we are pleased to report
that your Foundation has successfully
weathered the deep and difficult
recession of last year. The Foundation
remains on firm footing thanks in
large part to our Investment Policies
and Guidelines that served us well,
providing stability through the
economic turbulence.
Our spending policy has proven to be
sound, and as we rebuild capital it will
continue to moderate possible negative
impact on organizations that depend
on us. Our investment advisors who
understand us and the work that we
do have provided calming and strategic
counsel resulting in the Foundation’s
investments earning a remarkable
+15.03 percent in 2009. This result
portends a bright forecast for 2010.
The generosity of our donors allows
us to move forward with confidence.
Thanks to $3,174,518 in new donations
in 2009 we were able to distribute
more to some of our core organizations
than in the previous year, in spite of a
lower distribution rate. Jewish Child
and Family Service, the Rady Jewish
Community Centre, and the Gray
Academy all received more in distributions
in 2009 than in 2008 and of the 244
organizations that received funding from
the Foundation in 2009,
127 organizations received more than
the year before.
Our community can be proud of the
resilient Foundation we have built together.
We are very grateful for our loyal donor
base who has cared passionately about the
future of this community. We are thankful
for the numerous volunteers who commit
time and energy ensuring the Foundation’s
success and for the work of our dedicated
Board and committees comprised of wise,
insightful and compassionate individuals.
We are thankful for our team of dedicated,
knowledgeable and talented employees.
We have been committed to
strengthening our community
for over 45 years and will
continue to consistently
provide the high level
of support the Foundation
is known for.

Over the past forty-five years, the Jewish Foundation of
Manitoba has played an important role in building the
Jewish and broader community in Manitoba, Canada
and abroad. The Foundation has provided more than

enable the Foundation to provide valuable grants and
education awards to organizations and individuals in our

In general, funds at the Foundation are either Undesignated or
Designated. Undesignated Funds give the Foundation flexibility
to address current and evolving community priorities and fulfill
annual scholarship and grant obligations. Designated Funds
support organizations and causes as directed by the donors either
permanently (directed in a will or fund agreement) or on an annual
basis. All distributions are approved by the Board.
