WNEP-TV Helps “Jerry Kids” Again This Labor Day Weekend
WNEP-TV The News Station is
proud to be, for the 33rd year, the local host
of the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day
Telethon. The telethon will be broadcast
live from the Mall at Steamtown in
downtown Scranton starting at 9:00 pm on
Sunday, September 2, with local cut-ins
throughout, ending Labor Day September 3,
at 6:30 pm.
Newswatch 16 anchors Marisa
Burke, Mike Lewis and Mindi Ramsey, and
reporter Ryan Leckey along with
Pennsylvania Outdoor Life’s Don Jacobs
will host the 21½ hr. long telethon. In
addition, WNEP personalities will be on
hand to help with check presentations and
pitch for donations.
Last year WNEP raised nearly
$550,000 locally for Jerry’s Kids.
Nationally, $61 million was raised for
MDA.
Adults who used to watch as kids
now introduce their
own children to the
21½-hour, starstudded variety show
that simultaneously
entertains, informs
and raises funds for
the service and
research programs of
the Muscular
Dystrophy
Association.
First broadcast over Labor Day
weekend in 1966 by just one TV station in
New York City, the unique event starring
popular comedian Jerry Lewis quickly
caught the public's attention - and raised
more than $1 million. Now the show will be
broadcast on " 190 MDA Love Network"
stations across the country.
In 1998, the Jerry Lewis MDA
Telethon made history as the first telethon
seen around the world via Internet
simulcast, hosted by RealNetworks on
MDA's Web site.
An "interactive" show long before
the computer age popularized the term, the
Telethon's drama comes from the
ever-increasing fund-raising total
posted on the tote board - by
hand in 1966, now electronically.
Jerry's goal of raising "one dollar
more" than the previous year's
amount has been more than met
almost every year, thanks to the
generosity and compassion of the
American public.
Telethon anchor Ed McMahon
will return for his 40th year. Ed
was recently named “greatest
sidekick of all time” by
Entertainment Weekly magazine.
MDA is a voluntary
health agency working to defeat more than
40 neuromuscular diseases through
programs of worldwide research,
comprehensive services, and far-reaching
professional and public health education.
The Association’s programs are funded
almost entirely by individual contributors.

From the creator of "Grey's Anatomy," comes a story about new beginnings
and old friends. Addison Forbes Montgomery is a renowned neonatal surgeon,
respected by her friends and colleagues at Seattle Grace Hospital. Deciding she can
no longer co-exist with her ex-husband, McDreamy, and her ex-lover, McSteamy,
Addison heads to Los Angeles for sunnier, weather and happier possibilities.
Reunited with her once-married, newly divorced medical school friends, Naomi and
Sam, Addison joins their chic private practice. "Private Practice" tells the story of a
woman unafraid of change and willing to begin a new life.
Watch "Private Practice" Wednesdays this Fall at 9 on WNEP-TV The News
