Mark Brake Battery D, 2nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 11th ADA Brigade MCGREGOR RANGE, N.M. – At 4:30 a.m. most of El Paso was probably still snoozing with no intention of waking up for at least another hour, with one exception. The reconnaissance team of Battery D, “Dragons,” 2nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment, Terminal High Altitude Air Defense (THAAD), 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, was wide-awake at McGregor Range July 6. They were formed up and prepared to roll out for the battery’s first training exercise since their return from Guam five months ago. Just as the reconnaissance team left the gate to spearhead the operations, the rest of the unit arrived and prepared to do the same. The Dragons successfully conducted system integration checkout operations from July 6 through 15 on their newly received THAAD equipment. The SICO was conducted to ensure all THAAD equipment was in full working order. This SICO was especially unique because the Dragons were field testing a brand new configuration of the weapon system which uses less equipment but still accomplishes the THAAD mission. “I am extremely proud to be a part of the Dragon family and even more proud of all the Soldiers who pulled together to make this operation a complete success,” said Capt. Mison Kang, commander, Battery D, 2nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment, Terminal High Altitude Air Defense, 11th Air “We put a lot of emphasis on preparing for this SICO because it is our first field operation since we returned, and it really paid off during the operations.” >> Spc. Soldiers assigned to Battery D, 2nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment, Terminal High Altitude Air Defense, 11th Air Defense Artillery, erect a lightening protection kit for the AN/TPY-2 radar during their system integration and check out at Tobin Wells July 6. Defense Artillery Brigade. “Thanks to their hard work and determination, we are ready to accomplish any mission assigned.” Btry. D has been receiving brand-new equipment since May and simultaneously preparing for the SICO. “Preparations started eight weeks ago with the quarterly maintenance period we conducted to make sure the equipment received was within basic working order,” said Spc. Jason Seymour, THAAD system maintainer, Btry. D, 2nd ADA Regt., THAAD, 11th ADA Bde. “We put a lot of emphasis on preparing for this SICO because it is our first field operation since we returned, and it really paid off during the operations.” Representatives from Lockheed-Martin, Raytheon and the Missile Defense Agency were on hand and assisted the Dragons during the integration operation. Now with the SICO successfully completed, the Dragons turn their sights towards upcoming training in September to prepare for a global response force mission. Copeland Arrival/Departure Airfield Control Group for a nine-month mission in support of Operation Enduring Freedom at Guantanamo Naval Base, Cuba, Aug. 8. The 330th MP Co. will provide military police operations, while the 29th MP Co. will provide quick response forces for exter- nal security. “This mission is really important … everyone has put in so much effort in defeating all these terrorists and this is the last step, bringing them to justice,” said Capt. Christopher Price, commander, 330th MP Co. Completing the mission to standard and bringing home everyone safely is the top priority for both companies, but the leadership also supports their Soldiers in advancing their careers and education during this deployment. “Soldier care and welfare is of paramount importance to us,” said 1st Sgt. Lorenzo Dominguez, first sergeant, 330th MP Co. “We want to make sure that everyone is taking advantage of the educational programs available to them. Whether it’s Warrior Leaders Course, structured self-development courses, enrolling in college or a university online, we encourage that career enhancement.” “My goal for these guys is just to develop them as professionals as efficiently as we possibly can,” said 1st Lt. Scott Conner, detachment commander, 29th Military Police Company Forward. “I want them to look at this period as a time where they can develop professionally and hopefully bring back a lot of skills to the company.” The California and Maryland companies completed training at McGregor Range, New Mexico, with 5th Armor Brigade and the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security in advance of this mission. “The training here was really great, really professional … We did a lot of scenario based training that built cohesion in our company, the collective exercises were really good, effective,” Price said. “I think we were a great company when we got here, but now I think we are an even better company as we leave.” See GUARDSMEN Page 13A FORT BLISS BUGLE • August 18, 2016 • 13A Photos by Adam Holguin /Mobilization and Deployment, DPTMS Public Affairs Soldiers assigned to the 330th Military Police Company and the 29th Military Police Company Forward take a final walk stateside from the Silas L. GUARDSMEN Continued from Page 12A The training was key in getting some of the young Soldiers up to speed and comfortable with what will be expected of them for the next nine months. “We have several Soldiers who have never deployed before, so for them this is an amazing opportunity to do what they joined the Army to do,” Dominguez said. “There is a lot of camaraderie, excitement that’s been developed through the training and the misery spent in the Texas heat. It’s been challenging, it’s been tough and we are ready.” With morale high in both companies, most Soldiers were excited to start the mission, many spent their last moments stateside talking with friends and family at home. The command teams were grateful for the continued support the Soldiers have received from the Golden and Old Line states. “To the families, first of all thank you. Your sons and daughters are going forward to do an incredibly important mission that I know they are going to succeed very well at,” Conner said. “They will do an absolutely fantastic job, I can tell you that already. And we are honored to have every last one of them.” “We all trust each other, we all have loyalty to each other, and we are very close … We are all just ready to go,” Conner said. Col. Ryan McAfee. The Order of St. Michael is presented to Army aviators whose subordinates, peers and superiors have contributed significantly to the promotion and advancement of Army aviation during their military career. They must have demonstrated the highest standards of integrity and moral character, as well as having displayed an outstanding degree of professional competence and distinguished service within the community of United States Army Aviation. Col. Adam Hinsdale also was recognized with this accolade. Completing his last official flight in an RC-12X Guardrail aircraft, Col. Adam Hinsdale receives a customary champagne welcome from his staff at the airfield tarmac on Biggs Army Airfield, Aug. 4. Army aviators celebrate last hurrah after flight By Gil Telles Installation Public Affairs BIGGS ARMY AIRFIELD, Texas – In the cockpit of an Army RC-12X Guardrail aircraft, two Army aviators prepared for their last hoorah aboard this unique Army aviation asset. Col. Adam Hinsdale, commander, and Chief Warrant Officer 4 Eric Ray, standardizations officer, both assigned to 116th Military Intelligence Brigade, parent unit to the 204th Military Intelligence Battalion here, are retiring. They began their last flight by conducting the familiar routine of a preflight check prior to departing Biggs Army Air- field, Texas, for their last military flight, Aug. 4. Hinsdale’s career spanned more than three decades, and Ray’s more than 26 years. Their careers included experience in multiple rotary and fixed wing aircraft. “Typically the last flight is kind of a big deal in the Army. The water cannons, the Order of St. Michael, (was) a little bit unexpected. They kept it well hidden from us, but usually they do something like this as a good send off,” Ray said. A water cannon salute from Fort Bliss Fire Department firetrucks awaited their arrival as they taxied onto the tarmac. Also, they received a champagne soaking by staff members upon exiting the bird. The two aviators received the honor of being inducted into the Order of St. Michael for being outstanding Army aviators. Hinsdale and Ray commented on what they will miss the most. “The camaraderie and Soldiers,” Ray said. “Soldiers, most definitely Soldiers,” Hinsdale said. Their Soldiers replied in kind with many well wishes, congratulations and a final farewell salute. FORT BLISS BUGLE • August 18, 2016 • 15A 16A • August 18, 2016 • FORT BLISS BUGLE
