SERVING WINNIPEG
SINCE 1935
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
BY
NORBERT TOUCHETTE
As we move into the month of
February we may think our car
hobby is pretty idle but I don’t see it
that way. The executive has met
early January. In no time we were
all full force in putting together a
calendar of events for 2015. There
appears to be a consensus that
members really appreciate driving
tours and open road events. The
event chairman is putting a lot of effort in planning such things
for the members. You will notice as the months go on, the
calendar of events will grow.
I encourage each and every member to take pride in our
great Club. I was really proud when I read that our Club made
it as one of the “100 Reasons to love Winnipeg” in the
Winnipegmag.com Magazine winter 2014 edition on page 33,
along with the Park Theatre, the Winnipeg Railway Museum
and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. We are being
recognised and that is due to our membership’s great passion
for automobiles.
Phil Hoffer our Club project officer has a good list of items
that you may acquire to identify yourself as a proud MCAAC
member. It’s our 55th anniversary this year, let’s show our pride
and promote the club by being more visible.
I wish to thank Vice President Ray Olson for filling in for my
1st General Meeting. I had to go to Scottsdale for a week to
check-up on some of our lost members out there. If they are
wearing some of our Club Gear, I will find them for sure. Now
let’s heat up the garage and get our wheels ready for a fun
season.
At the February meeting we will be celebrating our 55th
Anniversary with cake, special guest speakers, and a special
surprise craft for the ladies. I challenge all of the guys out
there to make sure they bring out their better halves to the
meeting. Ladies there will be something at the meeting for
you, make sure you come out and meet the other ladies.
NEXT GENERAL MEETING • Sunday, Feb. 08 @ 2:00 p.m • Headingley Community Centre at 5353 Portage Ave.
EDITOR’S
NOTES
BY
PAUL HORCH
My, how time flies. This is my 5th
edition of the Sidemount. I’m really
enjoying being editor, and I hope
everyone is satisfied with my efforts
so far. If not, come and visit me and
I’ll show you the complaint
department, a couple of hundred feet
East of my house. This is a learning process for me, and I
hope every issue is a bit better than the last. Being editor gives
me a reason to get up on these cold mornings..
As I write this, it’s mid January, and it’s been COLD !!!
Fortunately, up to this point, we haven’t had a large amount of
snow.......yet. I’ve only had to use the snow blower twice so far,
and believe me, that’s enough, as I have a total of 700 feet of
driveways to clear.
In this issue, the Car of the Month is my 1965 Chrysler New
Yorker. I’m featuring this car because February 2015 is the 50th
anniversary of my Father purchasing the car. Read all about it
in this issue. I’d rather feature other members’ cars in upcoming
issues. Therefore I’m asking......not begging...... you to write
up something on your old car for inclusion in future issues. It’s
not hard to do, just follow what you see written up in the average
Car Of The Month articles in the Sidemount, how you got the
car, why you got the car, what you have done to it, and any
other interesting facts. We have literally hundreds of great cars
in this club, and I have pictures of most of them, so get busy
and write up something for me, or we can get together and
collaborate on an article.
Also in this issue is an article on Wolf Fuhr’s first car, a 1942
Pontiac, dressed up as only Wolf could have. The photo page
of the old Princess Auto wrecking yard was provided by George
Rogers from pictures he took over 30 years ago on a cold winter
day. If any of you have similar pictures and memories, why not

Fall
1949
This coming year is going to see a lot of MCAAC activities.
I’m going to start listing them in the Sidemount well in advance,
as I find out what’s happening, so there is no excuse to miss
any of them. It’s your club and can only be successful if YOU
participate. None of us is getting any younger, so do what you
can, while you can, and make some good memories for
yourselves and others. Above all, get out and use your cars.
LETTER
TO THE
EDITOR
Thank You to Gary Lambert for doing an appraisal on our club’s
1918 Ford Bus as required for insurance purposes. Thanks
Gary!

CAR
OF THE
MONTH
1965 CHRYSLER NEW YORKER
OWNED
BY
PAUL HORCH
Not too many people have had a car in their family for 50 years.
Well, my Father brought home this 1965 Chrysler New Yorker exactly
50 years ago this month, when it was brand new, and I still have it.
My Dad only ever had 4 brand new cars between 1953 and 1980.
Whenever he bought a new car he would usually not tell anyone
about it, including my Mom. It was always a pleasant surprise when
he’d show up with a new car, and Mom always approved of his
purchases.....eventually.
By late in 1964 Dad had piled about 92,000 on our reliable old
1959 Dodge Viscount and it was starting to show its age. In
November of 1964 he went to Penner Dodge, Chrysler on Pembina
Highway in Winnipeg and ordered a brand new 1965 Chrysler New
Yorker 4 door hardtop. It was equipped with a great 413 cubic inch
engine, automatic, AM/FM radio with rear speaker, rear defrost,
power brakes, and power steering. Most of that stuff was included
in the car. I think the only option was the FM radio which was a step
above the standard equipment AM radio. He didn’t want power
windows (thank Heaven, because they probably wouldn’t work by
now) and air conditioning was a very rare item in those days so it
doesn’t have that either. I have never seen a ‘65 Chrysler in Canada
that had air conditioning. The full purchase price was $6,000. There
were no sales taxes or “dealer fees” then. Somehow I think I
remember they gave him a trade in value of about $1700 on the ‘59
Dodge. What a great time to have a bit of money and buy a great
car. Even though he ordered the car in November, he had to wait
until February of 1965 to actually receive it. I never really got to drive
the Chrysler unless he was with me. I was only 17 at the time and I
wouldn’t have trusted me alone in that car either. I did, however, get
to drive it for my older sister’s wedding on May 8. 1965.
Dad was selling real estate in those days in addition to his
Winnipeg Symphony duties. He did very well selling houses and
put a lot of miles on the car in the first few years he owned it. About
1967 when the car had 49,000 miles on it, he noticed some antifreeze on the driveway and took it to Penner’s to check it out. It
turned out that the engine block had an external crack and had to
be replaced. Chrysler at that time had a 5 year or 50,000 mile
warranty so they installed a brand new 413 “crate engine”, or at
least a new short block, I can’t recall anymore. He was very fortunate
to get that engine, and the car ran as new again. My Dad loved that
car and maintained it in perfect working order. I remember when
the car was new, it had some fit and finish issues. One piece of
stainless steel roof molding was not mounted properly so Penner’s
fixed it but had to repaint the roof. As I recall, by the time they got it
perfect, they had painted the roof about three times. Penner’s was
very good to deal with in those days and some of the mechanics
that worked on that car became life-long friends. Dad put a lot of
miles on the car and it always performed great with no major
mechanical issues. I think he had to replace the windshield seven
times with stone chip damage, and one or two of the headlight
covers also suffered from cracks. At that time a windshield
replacement was around $100, and those very rare headlight covers
were an astounding $7. One time around 1965 the car ran out of
gas just as Dad arrived at a gas station. The cost to fill it with 20
Imperial gallons of leaded premium gas was $10. That was one
day’s wages for me working at the Eaton’s warehouse on Alexander
Ave for $1.25 per hour.. Comparable to about $110 at today’s
minimum wage.
Around 1973 Dad noticed that the original paint was getting tired,
and there were a couple of little rust issues which needed addressing,
so he had it repaired and repainted. It looked as good as new again.
The car has never been in a serious accident. One time someone
just tapped the trunk lid, unfortunately right where the Penner’s logo
was located, but the trunk was repaired as good as new, minus the
logo. Another time the car rolled out of the garage for some reason
and gently bumped into a tree. The bumper got a bit of a dent, but
at that time they had a way of fixing bumpers without removing
them from the car, and were able to fix it and spot-chrome it. I haven’t
thought about that process in years. Dad just kept driving the car
and he loved it.
In 1980 he surprised us again when he showed up with a brand
new 1980 Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Avenue Limited Edition. That
was a gorgeous car, with a custom stainless steel roof and many
features not found on “ordinary” New Yorkers. They apparently
only made about 375 of those. I should have kept that one.
Anyway, he decided to keep the ‘65 because he liked it so much.
A year or so later he gave me the ‘65. By that time it had a few more
rust issues which I had repaired by a body shop. I had to find new
fender skirts for it because they had a tendency to rust out. I found
lots of fender skirts, usually attached to parts cars. I bought a parts
car for $150 and ended up driving it for 14 years. It was a loaded up
New Yorker, white in colour, with troublesome power windows,
console with vacuum gauge, floor shift automatic, bucket seats etc.
It was a great ride and a fairly rare car. It eventually ended up being
totally stripped for parts as it had major rust issues. I also bought
another almost identical New Yorker in black, another in a horrible
red repaint, a ‘65 Windsor, and any ‘65 parts I could get. One day I
happened to be at the old North Star Plating, I think they were on
Church Ave at the time. I asked how much to get that back bumper
re-chromed. The fellow smiled and said he happened to have a rechromed one in stock and it was $90. I grabbed that and it’s still on
the car. Somewhere in the ‘80’s I had the heads done with some
new valves, lifters etc. and the car ran really smooth again. In 1991
my Nephew in North Carolina was getting married, and seeing that
his Mother got to use the car for her wedding, we decided to let him
use it for his. My Dad and younger sister and I drove down to North
Carolina in September of 1991. My Mom and my Aunts wisely flew
down there. I had put a set of Yokohama radials on it, the first
radials it ever had, and boy did it ride great ! We did the 4,000 mile
round trip with no difficulty at all. I think the car went through 18 US
quarts of oil, but still got over 20 miles per gallon on the highway. I
guess I should have done the rings too.
As Dad got older he really couldn’t relate to his ‘65 New Yorker. I
did have the privilege of taking him out for his 80th birthday in it and
he enjoyed that. By the time he was in his late 80’s his recollection
of the car was hazy at best. When I had the car on display at The
Waverley and Rosewood car show, Dad was residing there in
assisted living. The picture of him with the car was probably the last
time he saw it, and even then it didn’t mean much to him. He just
didn’t remember it. He passed away in March of 2011 at the age of
93. Every time I look at my Chrysler I think of all the good family
memories associated with it. It’s still a great running car with almost
200,000 miles on it. As far as I know the transmission has never had
any work done on it and still performs as well as it ever did. The
engine is somewhat tired and burns a bit of oil, but it’s fine for the
amount I drive it, and still has lots of get up and go. That 413 Chrysler
engine was one of Chrysler’s best, with 340 horsepower and a 4
barrel carburetor. 1965 was the last year the 413 was used in cars.
Over the years the Chrysler has taken part in friends’ weddings
and car club events and shows. I will never sell the car. Someday
it will be going to a friend who loves it. What’s even more important
is that his wife loves it, so I know it will be well taken care of when I
let it go. Thanks Dad.

INTERESTING STUFF...
HALOGEN HEADLIGHTS &
HEADLIGHT RELAYS
SUBMITTED BY
PAUL HORCH
I recently found out from MCAAC member Bruce Freeman, that
6 volt sealed beam halogen headlights are readily available
locally. The ones I have seen are manufactured by Wagner
and the part number is H6006. I bought a set at Phil’s
Auto on Main Street in Winnipeg. They are also
available at Piston Ring. The cost is around
$13 each, and last time I checked, Piston
Ring had lots of them in stock.
I put the halogens in my 1947
Chrysler and they produce a nice bright
light. HOWEVER they draw quite a bit
more current than an incandescent
sealed beam. The extra current draw
can be a bit too much for an old
headlight switch. The solution is to
install a headlight relay. The relay is wired
directly to the battery with a 10 gauge wire. I
wired mine to the hot side of the starter solenoid
which comes right off the battery. With the relay
wired correctly, all the headlight switch does is turn
on the relay which takes very little current. With your lights on,
all the headlight current comes right from the battery. This give
you a brighter light than running all the current through the old
headlight switch. I have seen 6 volt headlight relays on eBay
and I know that one of our MCAAC members has some for
sale. Just make sure you get a 6 volt relay for a 6 volt car. For
use with high and low beams you need a double relay. For a 6
volt car with a generator system, it will keep up with its charging
as long as the car is in motion. At idle the generator may not
keep up the charge on the battery. A newer car
with an alternator should have no such
problem. Lately I hardly ever drive at night
especially in an old car, but for the few times
I might, I think the halogen lights would
prove very helpful. A headlight relay
would also prove helpful even if you are
using original incandescent bulbs or
sealed beams.
Halogen seal beams are also
available for all configurations of 12 volt
headlights. I put a set on my 1956 Fargo
a few years ago and they produce really
good light. I haven’t yet put in a relay
because the current draw on a 12 volt
vehicle is much less than on a 6 volt system,
but I will consider it in the future. I have also
used them in my ‘65 Chrysler New Yorker, and my
1979 Lincoln with no relays, and have had no problems.
This is just for information. Your results may vary.

New Business
Miami Museum Day
- The request to participate at the Miami Museum Day will celebrate
the town’s 2 museums. Dawn Bird had indicated that they would
like MCAAC to be the major participant for a car show because we
have a wide range of club cars, but other clubs would also be
contacted to participate. The town of Miami is approximately 100
km south west of Winnipeg on Hwy 23. Ray asked the attending
members if there was interest in participating. A show of hands
indicated approval to proceed with additional inquiries.
Advertising
- Wayne Pruden informed the Executive and General membership
that 2015 is his last year to manage the advertisers for the Side
Mount Reporter. He has been involved in this activity for the past 6
to 7 years and wishes to pass this function on to another member.
Wayne reported the revenue received from companies advertising
in the SMR help to fund the newsletter and other activities. Most of
the advertising comes from companies with an interest in the car
club. Ray thanked Wayne for his dedication to this important function.
- Ray asked the Members to consider this coming vacancy and
anyone interested can reach out to Ray, Norbert, or Wayne.
