FCP donates to Forest County Association
of Lakes
By Mike Monte
Forest County Potawatomi Vice-Chair Al Milham presented this symbolic check
to Lee Lamers, President of the Forest County Association of Lakes (FCAL). The check in
the amount of $2,000 will be used by FCAL to fund their ongoing operations.
Vice-Chair Milham said that the Potawatomi are always glad to support
environmental causes like the work performed by FCAL and said the tribe wanted to help
the organization and their good works with area lakes.
FCAL has a mission to preserve and improve the quality of area lakes and is a
joint effort of area lake associations. They work to eliminate invasive species and educate
young people on lake quality with an essay contest. There are plans to start a photo
contest for young people in the future.
Community Thanksgiving
Dinners
Arbutus Lutheran holds a
Community Thanksgiving Dinner
A Community Thanksgiving Dinner will be served
in the Pickerel-Pearson area at Arbutus Lutheran Church
on Thanksgiving Day from 11:30-1:00 p.m. Thanksgiving
worship begins at 10:30 a.m. at the church, located just off
Highway 55 near County T, in Pearson. Everyone is
welcome. There is no charge for the meal. Freewill
offerings support the church Local Needs Fund. We are
also collecting non-perishable food items for the Elcho
Food Pantry. Carry-outs are available.
The families of Arbutus Church make this dinner
every year as a service to the community. Head Chef
Herm Wissbroecker roasts twelve turkeys, mashes 100
pounds of hand-peeled, locally-grown potatoes, and
cooks a couple roasters of stuffing. Dinner includes all the
fixings like gravy, cranberry sauce, fresh breads, and
homemade desserts, including pumpkin pie.
"We hope that those who otherwise would be
alone or wouldn't fix a thanksgiving dinner will come and
be part of our Thanksgiving celebration. Singles, families,
couples and hunters are all invited," said Pastor Nancy
Richmond.
For more information, call 715-623-6850.
Crandon Community Thanksgiving
Day Dinner
The Crandon Community Thanksgiving Day
Dinner will be at St. Luke's United Methodist Church on
South Lake Avenue. The dinner is on Thanksgiving Day,
November 22nd from 11:00 till 2:00 p.m. The meal is free
with a free will offering available.
Carryouts are available with a limit of three, and
transportation is available. Call 478-3797 for more info.
The Deer Hunting Tradition
Deer hunting is a tradition in Wisconsin, that for some people, is the highlight of the
year. The old photo above is typical of deer camps of yesteryear. It is a buck pole at Theiler's
camp in 1934. Many loggers know Carl Theiler who served as secretary of the Timber Producers
for years, and these are his relatives.
Good luck to all of you who are pursuing the wily whitetail, even though most "pursue"
from a tree stand over a bait pile. May the hunting gods smile upon you, and be safe.

Crandon's Trifecta Stores
Food Drive Sale
Would you like to do some shopping and receive
a hefty discount and help the Newcap Food Pantry? Well,
Saturday, November 17th is the last day of the annual sale
held by Tricia's Treasures, Flowers From the Heart and
She's All that.
Each store has a different formula for the amount
of non-perishable food items required to get a specific
discount, but you can get up to 30% off for 15 nonperishable items at one of the stores, 25% off for 10 food
items at two of the stores and lesser discounts for smaller
amounts of food items.
Shop and help the food pantry. You can get some
Christmas shopping done locally and help others while
you do!
Vet's Day Dinner
The Up North Area Girl Scouts are having a food
drive for the Townsend Food Pantry. Our girl scouts work
hard this time of year with school and learning how to give
back to our communities. The scouts are gearing up and
practicing to go Christmas caroling at the Nu Roc Nursing
Home in Blackwell on November 30, 2012.
Boxes or bins will be at our local business in
Wabeno, Laona, Townsend & Crandon. Your donations
will be greatly appreciated for this month is about
Thanksgiving.
Humane Society fund raiser in
Armstrong Creek
Submitted by Vern Hollister
Armstrong Creek-Saturday, November 17,
travelers and residents near Armstrong Creek can help the
Forest County Humane Society from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at
The Corner Store in Armstrong Creek. Andrea Millan, an
area resident, volunteered at Humane Societies when she
was a college student. Her work and starting a young family
prevent her from volunteering at the Society in Crandon.
Caring for animals never left her. She contacted the Forest
County Society about raising funds for their needs.
This Saturday, Millan will host a bake sale and a
donation basket with the proceeds going to the FCHS. Their
needs are considerable. Millan said they need dog food, cat
food, blankets, bedding, towels, laundry detergent, and
bleach.
For this high traffic deer hunting weekend, Millan
enlisted family members and other volunteers to bake bars,
cookies, muffins, cakes, and pies. If anyone has not been
contacted and would like to contribute to the sale, stop at
The Corner Store with a dozen cookies or just pause to
contribute. With hunters travelling north and preparing to
spend time in the area, Millan believes they may like some
homemade sweets to carry to the hunting shacks. Hunters
can help out domestic animals while they pursue the wild
ones.
Help victims of Hurricane Sandy with
community rummage sale
Ron Boldt was the guest speaker at the Veteran's Day Dinner
By Boyd Monte
Every year on November 11, the United States
honors veterans of all wars on what is called Veteran's Day.
Veterans Day was originally named Armistice Day and was
the end of the Great War, or World War I. Many people did
not think that we would ever see a war like that again. In
1919, the first Armistice Day was celebrated. It was made
a federal holiday in 1938. After World War II and the
Korean War was fought, the United States had more
veterans, so in 1954, Armistice Day was renamed,
Veteran's Day so that veterans of all the wars were
honored.
Continued on pg 21
A rummage sale is being planned in Forest
County, with all the proceeds from the event, to go to the
victims of Hurricane Sandy.
The sale is scheduled for Friday, December 7 &
Saturday, December 8th at the Crandon Community
Building beginning at 9:00 am both days. There will be a
silent auction and raffles. The Crandon Lions will be
selling food.
People are needed both for help at the event and
to donate items for the sale. So look through your closets
for anything in good shape to donate. How about those
Christmas gifts from last year that you have never used or
the toys your child wanted for all of fifteen minutes and
they are now collecting dust. Any of these items would be
welcome, and in turn may help the people who are buying
at the sale by making their money go further at this holiday
time. If you have donations or are willing to help at the sale,
please call Lana at 715-478-3502.
The set up starts Monday, December 3 at 1:00 pm
at the community building.

Wisconsin Brass Quintet will
perform in Three Lakes
The Three Lakes School/Community Arts
Association is delighted to bring the Wisconsin Brass
Quintet to the Northwoods for a concert on Monday,
December 3rd. Founded in 1972, the Wisconsin Brass
Quintet is a faculty ensemble-in-residence at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Music. With
extensive performances throughout the Midwest and
nationally, including appearances at New York's Carnegie
Recital Hall and Merkin Concert Hall, the quintet's
educational programs and master classes have been
presented in such prestigious settings as The Juilliard
School and the Yale School of Music. They perform
annual live radio broadcast concerts on Wisconsin Public
Radio. Barry Kilpatrick writes for the American Record
Guide: "I've reviewed over 250 brass recordings in the
past five years, and this is one of the very best. The WBQ
is a remarkable ensemble that plays with more reckless
abandon, warmth, stylistic variety and interpretive interest
than almost any quintet in memory."
It is the mission of the Wisconsin Brass Quintet to
perform and record, at the highest level of artistry, a large
and diverse range of repertoire both originally composed
and adapted for brass quintet. This includes works from

those not talented enough to achieve pro status. “It's
easier to make better decisions when you're focused and
in good condition,” said Daniels Sr.
There are boxing clubs around the world known
for helping its young members stay out of trouble.
Boxing builds self-confidence, while fighters develop
self-discipline and learn about responsibility and
sportsmanship. There are many stories about at-risk
youth turning into champions, who may not have had the
same chance if it weren't for boxing.
Coaches Webster and Daniels continue to
inspire young athletes, teaching them skills that can be
applied outside the boxing ring as well. “We love what we
do.” Daniels said. Webster added, “You have to have a
passion for boxing to pursue it. It's also a good way to
give back to our community.”
Club hours for amateurs are 4 to 6 p.m. Adults
work out from 6 8 p.m. Interested boxers from Crandon
also welcome. For more information on the club or about
upcoming bouts call (715) 889-0883.

Senior Chatter
1.) Quickly clear your pet's stuffy nose:
Achoo! It's cold season for cats and dogs, too. If your pet
seems congested, help her breathe easier with saline
nose drops. To do: Fill a dropper with a mixture of 1/2 tsp.
salt, 1/2 tsp. baking soda and 1 cup of distilled water. Hold
the dropper in one hand and tip her head back with the
other, then place a drop or two in each nostril. The saline
solution will thin and flush out mucus to relieve your pet's
symptoms. Repeat twice a day until she's feeling better.
2.) De-puff tired eyes in minutes: The next time
a late night leaves you with under-eye puff, try this quick
a.m. trick: Add 1 tsp. of salt to a cup of warm water. Dip two
cotton balls or pads into the solution, then lie back and
place them over your closed eyes for 5 minutes. The warm
water will open pores around the eyes so the salt can draw
out the retained moisture that causes swelling. You'll look
refreshed and rested - even if you don't feel it!
3.) Mildew-proof a shower curtain: Before you
hang a new plastic shower curtain or liner, try this genius
trick: Fill your tub with 6 inches of water and 2 cups of salt
and submerge the curtain for 1 hour, then hang without
rinsing. The soak will impart an invisible coat of sodium
crystals what will prevent mildew from forming on the
plastic. Repeat up to four times a year.
4.) Keep dark jeans from fading: Score! You
found a pair of jeans that flatters your every curve. To
prevent the dark denim from fading or bleeding onto other
clothing, wash the jeans by themselves twice, adding 1 / 4
cup of salt to the wash cycle each time. Salt helps set dye
pigments, ensuring the color won't bleed. (After two
treatments, wash the jeans as usual.)
5.) Mince garlic with ease: Chopping garlic can
be a hassle when you constantly have to stop and wipe
sticky pieces off the side of your knife. Next time, dampen
your blade with water and sprinkle with salt before getting
started. The abrasive granules will provide just enough
friction to keep the garlic from clinging to the knife so you
can breeze through the task.
6.) Rescue a bitter cup of joe: Stuck with coffee
that has too much bite but don't want extra creamer
calories or chemicals? Just grab a salt packet and add a
pinch to balance the java's acidity. The result: a delicious
morning brew - with no salty taste.
7.) Erase a red wine oops: To save your
tablecloth after a wine spill, blot with paper towels, then
drape the fabric over a bowl, centering the stain inside the
rim. Next, pour cool water over the affected area and
sprinkle on a layer of salt to absorb the wine. Once the
stain has turned pink, pour a few cups of boiling water
over the spot and toss the tablecloth in the wash.
8.) Remove sticky iron residue: If you're
worried that scorch marks on your iron's plate might get
transferred to your clothes and damage the fabric, grab
the saltshaker. Simply lay a sheet of wax paper on your
ironing board, sprinkle a handful of salt on top and run the
hot iron over the paper. The heat will soften the residue,
allowing the coarse salt to scrub it off the metal plate. Then
turn off the iron, let cool and wipe the plate with a damp
cloth.
9.) Clear a clogged pipe for pennies: The only
thing worse than a slow draining sink? The noxious smell
of drain cleaner! Sidestep both problems with this allnatural fix: Mix 2 Tbs. of salt with 2 cups of seltzer and pour
down the drain. Wait 1 minute, then run the hottest tap
water for 10 seconds. The abrasive salt and seltzer will
break down the blockage and the scalding water will wash
it away.
10.) Disinfect a wooden cutting board:
Pomegranates, beets and other colorful foods always
leave stains on your cutting board, but scrubbing with dish
soap or cleaning spray can impart an unpleasant taste the
next time you chop produce. The save: Sprinkle salt all
over the board, wet a sponge with hot water and rub the
salt in until the marks are gone, then wipe with a towel. The
granules will scour away any lingering food particles,
cutting stains, odors and the risk of bacterial growth.

The Forest County Chamber of Commerce would
like to remind all area businesses to get their ads in for the
Official 2013 Forest County Visitors Guide! Advertising
reservations forms have been mailed to all businesses
throughout the County. The form explains how to place an
ad in the upcoming issue of the guide. Ad prices remain
the same as last year, still reduced 20% (thanks to the
Forest County Tourism Commission), and assistance in
producing ads is available free of charge.
This beautiful, full color, full size, high quality
guide showcases all Forest County has to offer. Nearly
22,000 copies of the 2012 guide have been distributed this
year, so far. The guides were supplied to various
businesses, chambers, and libraries throughout the state,
Wisconsin Welcome Centers, as well as mailed to
thousands who requested area information. It was also
featured at four tourism trade shows during the year.
Thousands also accessed the guide on the internet (in
PDF version) from the Chamber's website. Improvements
and additions are made every year, with many for the 2013

Thank You
Words cannot express how thankful I am for a
community like this. I was blind-sided by the
death of my wife, Sjana, as were all of you.
You all grieved with me and shared my tears.
I thank God that He led me here and allowed
Sjana and I to become part of this amazing
community. Jonathan and I thank you for
all your cards, letters, calls, food and
financial help. The pain of losing part of me
is eased by your support and love.
God bless you all.
THANK YOU,
THANK YOU, THANK YOU
Thank you very much

support, I look forward to

November is American Diabetes Month
This month, the Forest County Health
Department along with the American Diabetes
Association hopes to raise the profile of this insidious
disease in the hearts and minds of people here at home,
and around the globe.
Recent estimates project that as many as 1 in 3
American adults will have diabetes in 2050 unless we take
steps to Stop Diabetes®. Today, nearly 26 million adults
and children in the U.S. have diabetes. 10% of adults in
Wisconsin are estimated to have diabetes compared to
13.4% in Forest County. That's 1,240 people who have
diabetes in our community.
Before people develop type 2 diabetes, they
almost always have prediabetes - blood glucose levels
that are high, but not high enough to be diagnosed as
diabetes. Today, nearly 79 million adults and children in
the U.S. have prediabetes. In Forest County, an estimated
2,540 people aged 20 years and older have prediabetes.
These people are at an increased risk of developing type 2
diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
A total of 3,780 people in our community either
have diabetes or prediabetes. Our total population is
9,300 so we are well on our way to 40% of our population
having diabetes unless preventative measures are taken.
The cost of diabetes in Forest County adults is staggering.
In 2009, direct costs were estimated at $10.6 million,
indirect costs were estimated at $5.3 million, totaling an
estimated $15.9 million.
We hope to call attention to this epidemic that is
facing our nation and our community. If you have been
diagnosed with diabetes, it is important that you follow
your doctor's advice to stay healthy and prevent
complications. If you are at risk for type 2 diabetes, it can
be delayed or even prevented. You can take steps to
change your diet, increase your physical activity, and
maintain a healthy weight.
For more information on risk factors, symptoms,
treatment, and preventing complications of diabetes,
please visit www.diabetes.org or call us at the Health
Department at 715-478-3371.

Mark Daniels, Mark Daniels Jr. and Eugene Webster
take a break from training
CRANDON, Wi.--Tucked away in the former
Crandon High School gymnasium, the Forest County
Potawatomi Warriors Boxing Club resembles the gym in the
first Rocky movie, where Balboa spent his days working out
and sparring. Training equipment occupies the space where
trainers coach the fighters one-on-one. A weight room
looms in the distance on the former gymnasium stage. There

he's one of the notable fighters in the boxing club who hopes
to turn professional in early 2013.
Wisconsin Local Boxing Commission, USA
Amateur Boxing Association, and Wisconsin Intertribal
Boxing Association sanction the club, which has been
around since April 2002. There haven't been any prominent
fighters over the last decade but, with Daniels Jr. preparing
for his big opportunity, the FCP Warriors are expecting
things to liven up. The sport may see a huge revival on the
reservation. Things are off to a good start with three
members ready to box: Daniels, C.J. Skenandore, and
William Alloway.

He shared a brief history. “Back in the early 80s,
Lou Boyd came to the rez and got people interested in
starting a boxing club but could not get financial support for
it. He showed us the basics and I knew that I loved it. I tried
to keep people interested. In 2002 I started holding informal
practices in the basement of my home. We didn't have much
equipment to work with-- a few pairs of gloves, some
headgear, and a few punching bags. In 2003 we moved to
the old Tribal Hall gymnasium, and finally in 2005 we moved
to the former Crandon High School gym. It's perfect for what
we wanted to do.”
Webster explained a typical workout that includes
35 cardiovascular drills geared toward boxing. In addition,
“roadwork” consists of running two miles each day on
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. “Two weeks before a fight,
we ask them to run every weeknight and taper off so they can
focus on sparring before the fight.” Fighters are advised to
eat right, get plenty of rest, and do well in school. They are
also required to stay out of trouble.
A member of the club since it opened, Mark Daniels
Jr. showed promise over the last decade. The club rules

January 23rd, 2013, he will have paid his debt to society.
His debut bout will be in February in Lac du
Flambeau. If he does well, another professional contract will
come his way because according to his coach and father,
there are two agents who will be present at the debut match.
He was offered a 3-year contract in October 2011-- before
the legal woes.
Webster oversees his coaching. “Mark Jr. will be
able to travel without restrictions, we hope to see his selfdiscipline pay off,” he said. Four fighters have backed out of
matches with Daniels in recent months.
“It's a significant step that boxers take after
participating in the amateurs- to pursue a professional
boxing career.” says Webster, a former pro boxer whose
record speaks for itself with 399 wins, 78 losses, 52
knockouts, and 20 titles. Webster has boxed since the age

Boxing is a sport dating back to ancient times. In
