Dear Ferraristi,
Monterey Auto Week was car nirvana. We shipped a hauler of cars for some members from
New England, and saw many people from our region, all over the country and many parts of
the world during the week. Our activities included Concours on the Avenue in Carmel, the
auctions, Casa Ferrari, new car unveilings, Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance, the Quail, Concorso
Italiano, and of course, Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The Ferrari Club of America
National Meet followed commencing with a lovely Ferrari concourse at the Nicklaus Golf
Club. It was all great fun. Check out my auto blog www.theautoblonde.com for write-ups and
pictures about the week.
We have some terrific events being planned for this fall. Watch the NER-FCA website calendar
and my emails for updates. I look forward to seeing you soon.
Warmest regards,
Suzy

Demystifying the
Ferrari F1 Steering
Wheel: From the
Ferrari Museum in
Maranello
By: Tom and Bob Ducibella
S
ome of us may not be F1 addicts,
but many of us occasionally tune
in to the races on television in
which the F1 steering wheel is
prominently displayed during racing - so
what are all those controls, buttons, and
widgets on the steering wheel? And what
role do they play in the race? And for
that matter, do they bear any resemblance
to features on your street Ferrari (e.g.,
the F430 and subsequent models)? Such
questions crossed our minds as 3 of us
toured the manettino (little lever, in
Italian) exhibit in Maranello last spring.
(FCA members: TD, BD, and Jeff Jones)
The exhibit brought back memories of
our first sports cars, a 1966 MGB (BD)
and 1971 Fiat 124 Spider (TD). Their
steering wheels were widget-less wonders….
probably the only part of those cars you
didn’t have to worry about deteriorating
10 | HorseTales | september 2015
or servicing. For the MG, British Leyland
made it with aluminum spokes and black
Bakelite plastic. Being Italian, the Fiat
wheel had a bit more elegance with a real
wooden rim; at 16 inches in diameter, it
provided steering leverage (for example, the
330 GTC has the same diameter wheel to
reduce steering effort at low speeds). Many
modern cars have 14 inch steering wheels
(given power assist) despite more vehicle
weight and size than the MG and Fiat.
Now, let’s go modern: get into a 430 or 599,
and the steering wheel is a multi-purpose
instrument for driving…..advanced gofast logic from Maranello makes you feel
like one of the Star Trek captains, hitting
the lift off engine Start button and then
using the manettino to set your course to
leave the Romulan ships in the (galactic)
dust. Those of you with newer cars are
familiar with more simplified steering wheel
Green Green Green

controls than the F1 wheel. For example,
lets take the F430 manettino, which is a
rotary switch directly derived from racing.
It controls the electronics governing the
settings of the suspension, allowing the
driver greater choice of controls given his/
her skill level, road conditions, and driving
objectives. There are 4 settings: Low Grip
(stability under various road conditions),
Sport (stiffer suspension), Race (faster
shifting, even stiffer), and CST (on/off
control of stability and traction controls).
Fast forward to a current F1 manettino
steering wheel. The wheel diameter appears
to be smaller even with all of the electronic
assists available. Over 20 different controls
are available including lap timer, tire settings,
and even “Driver drink during race”. Check
out the enlarged Maranello mural photos
for an informative introduction into the
world of F1 steering controls and challenges
faced by the driver to monitor and utilize
these during competition; and throw in
communications as well.
Let’s move on to watching the F1 races
on TV or at Ferrari of NE, or you are at
a museum or event and peering into the
cockpit of an F1 car. Or, like those of
writing this article, you are in Maranello
and surrounded by various years and
models of F1 racers. Looking at the racecars
chronologically, it readily becomes apparent
that the evolution of the steering wheel is
not a trivial matter. Before the advent of
electronic suspension control, drivers had
a large diameter wheel for more steering
leverage in those days without power- or
electronically assisted steering. Imagine
doing 270 degree switchback turns with
no assist! Makes us appreciate the physical
conditioning of slim drivers like Phil Hill
and Denise McCluggage. (for example,
see the photos of the 1955 Ferrari 555 F1
racecar)
One of the huge and often unappreciated
benefits of the chronological street and
race car exhibits is seeing how the different
systems developed over time, providing
more driver inputs. The steering wheel
is only one example, and, as is often the
case, upgrading one system is accompanied
by improvements or changes in other
components. So, museum exhibits are
more than eye candy, but also opportunities
to appreciate how Enzo, his drivers, and
engineers (and the competition) contributed
to technological changes in both race
and street cars. In future Ferraris will the
steering wheels of street cars look more like
the F1 manettino….stay tuned.

Tour of Maineline Exotics By: Suzy Hiniker
Just a sampling of the goods at
Maineline Exotics
I
n July twenty plus members from all
New England states rallied through
the rain to Biddeford, Maine for a
special tour of Maineline Exotics.
NER member Bob Tkacik graciously
showed us his amazing collection that
includes several Toyota 2000GT’s, a BMW
507 roadster, an Elva MK7S, Lotus 30,
a Maserati 3500 Vignale Spyder, Ferrari
330P4 recreation, MB 300SL Gullwing
coupe, Ferrari 246 GTS Dino, a rare (1
of 100) Ferrari 330 GTS, and more auto
delights.
After a spectacular lunch at the Portland
Pie a group of us travelled further north
in Maine to visit Bob Bahre’s collection
of Duesenberg’s, Delahey’s, Packard’s and
more rare vintage classics. Mr. Bahre owned
and developed the NASCAR track New
Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon,
NH and is well known for his classic
collection. It was a car nirvana day for us
in the Pine Tree State. Join us at the Maine
Event in October!

Driving Tour and
Hopkins Inn Luncheon
By: Mike Odierna
FCA-NER enthusiasts chased away dark
clouds and beat the rainy forecast on a
Saturday this past June. It turned out to be
a beautiful day for a caravan of our favorite
Italian cars, which reached the historic
Hopkins Inn, Warren, CT.
Sitting high above the northern shore of
Lake Waramaug, we enjoyed expansive
views of the lake, the Berkshire foothills and
neighboring vineyards at dining al fresco.
The restaurant is renowned for its
contemporary Austrian cuisine, provided
us with a choice of 5 delicious entrees and
deserts. Most importantly, we all enjoyed
seeing and meeting new members from our
club. If you missed the luncheon, more will
be upcoming, so please join us!

Connecticut July 4th Breakfast Run
By Vince Rossi
The Breakfast Club
I
n addition to patriotic festivities
and fireworks, July 4th was also the
backdrop for a FCA-NE Region
breakfast run. Early Saturday morning
FCA members met in Wilton, CT with
a contingent from Cos Cob joining the
group for an impressive 15 car convoy to
Ridgefield, CT for a delicious home-style
breakfast at a local eatery. Ferrari models
ranged from FF to Testarossa to 360 and
others, with even 3 non-Ferrari exotics
joining the group. It was an impressive
gathering given the Holiday weekend and
the ongoing threat of rain.
Excellent food, engaging conversation, old
friendships strengthened, new friendships
formed and a great time had by all!

Concorso Ferrari &

By: Andrew Baldassarre

A
n Italian car feast of Ferrari,
Maserati,
Alfa
Romeo,
Lamborghini, Fiat, and a few
Ducati motorcycles came out
to LaSalle Road in West Hartford, CT
in spite of the rain for the 15th Annual
Ferrari Concorso & Friends to benefit
Connecticut Children’s Medical Center
(CCMC). FCA-NER with the help of
some terrific sponsors like Bozzuto’s Inc,
Harvest Properties, Redline Restoration,
Blackhorse Garage, Valenti, New
Country, Miller Motorcars, Ferrari of
New England, Lamborghini of Boston,
and many other supporters has raised over
$1M for the hospital over the years.
The best part of each Concorso, even
better than the 120+ Italian cars and
supercars that parked in West Hartford
for the show, is the parade of 40 pediatric
patients. Each child is driven in an exotic
car from CCMC through the cheering
crowds to the red carpet on LaSalle Rd.
At the red carpet each young guest is
announced by name and showered with
cheers and gifts. It is a beautiful event to
behold, and very well organized by the
Ferrari & Friends Concorso committee;
Chair Andrew Baldassarre, Suzy Hiniker,
Mike Simonetta, Tim Prete, Charlie and
Diane Vest, Paul and Anna Mancinone,
Peter Karam, Brendan Monstream, Peter
Charest, Elena Arone, Fred Caserta, Frank
Anigbo, Andy Caputo, Joe Capasso, Rosie
DeRobertis, Chair Emeritus
Stanley
Cohen, as well as our friends from
Connecticut Children’s Medical Center,
Robin Vidito, Summer Spellman and
Dorene Tarascio.
An example of some of the special cars on
display this year; Stanley Cohen’s Ferrari
Enzo and La Ferrari both in yellow, an
Enzo in red, a rare 1988 Ferrari 208 GTB
Turbo, an extremely rare 1957 Ferrari
335S, an Alfa Romeo 6C, a 1973 Ferrari
Daytona 365 GTB/4, and a very rare and
special Pagani Huayra (1 of 100). The
Huayra is a hyper-car produced by Pagani
in Italy with the engine supplied by
Mercedes-AMG. Kudos to all involved,
including the kids, the crowd, and the car
owners who brought out their vehicles in
the rain for a worthy cause.
