Virginia in Her Late Teens
Virginia (Ashton) Stubbs was born in
Knoxville, TN, July of 1926. When she
was young they moved to Texas but
as a teenager, she moved to New
York City to live with a family as their
nanny and also finish high school. Her
first job was as a secretary at NYC’s
famous Macy’s 5th Ave. Not long
after graduating, she moved to
Washington D.C. to work at a
doctor’s office. Her friend there told
her one day that she had a really
handsome brother that would be
home from the war soon and she
wanted to introduce him to Virginia.
Lewis came home from WWII, fell in
love with Virginia, married her and
began their family (5 children in all)
that first year.
They lived in Maryland, Nebraska
and Massachusetts as Lewis finished
his pharmacy schooling and
acquired his first job. When their 5
children were young they moved to
Florida. Virginia taught piano lessons,

was involved in running Lewis’
pharmacy, helped out in their church
and was very devoted to the lives of
her children. Years later they sold their
business, moved to South Carolina and
raised acres of blueberries and
strawberries, planted a large garden,
enjoyed frequent visits from all their
children and 13 grandchildren and
started up a new church and
community center in a rural area.

The Whole Family
They sold their farm, moved to a
retirement community in Clemson, SC
and started up yet another church.
The last 3 years they lived with their
youngest son until Lewis died just
shortly after their 69th anniversary.
Virginia moved into The Lantern in
May and retains her sweet spirit,
precious smile and love for God.
