Foreword
A
rena Animation Andheri (W)’s Anivolution is back, this time with our sixth issue.
What makes it all the more grand and special, is that this time around, we’ve had
decided to work on a special theme than an event. But “what could that possibly
be?”, was a question that kept haunting us for days together. With no breakthrough in
sight, we decided to ponder upon our achievements so far. But nothing could beat the joy
of publishing a magazine for half a year. So what better theme than Animation; afterall,
that’s what we’ve named our magazine around!
To take a quick recap on last month’s issue: it was sheer fun and learns about
gaming with our successful event ‘The Ultimate Knockdown’. We featured interviews of
Arjun’s CG artist and illustrator Mr. Pavan Buragohain; yet another feather in our hat.
Being a gaming issue; the issue was completely dedicated to video games. This month to
make it an animation special was a daunting task. And not just us, even TASI celebrated
their annual festival ANIFEST2012 this time around!
‘An animator needs to be spontaneous and humorous’ reads a line in the book
‘The Illusions of Life by Disney Animation’. While forming the structure of the magazine
we followed the same procedure, where each member came up with ideas. The one that
made it through from this pool was ‘a tool-kit for animators’. The team, charged on with
passion and enthusiasm to work on the theme.
Our featured interview this month is with one of the Rango’s animator, Mr. Peter
Tan from Lucasfilm Animation Singapore. Plus there is exclusive coverage of events which
were conducted in the center to enhance the quality student work. This month has also
seen some innovations from two camera manufacturing giants and we have reviewed their
flagship products. Also the confusion of a concept and story has to be solved by giving
detailed information on the art of pre-production.
For those who like to delve deeper, this issue also covers the history of animation
which started from cave drawings and now on to computers. An animation special cannot
go without having the punch of principles of animation. To incorporate principles of
animation most of the pages in this issue are designed according to the 12 principles.
The month ended with a blink of an eye and we hereby present you little information
about animation compiled with passion and joy called ‘Anivolution’.
Happy Reading

HISTORY OF ANIMATION
THE HISTORY OF ANIMATION
The Chronicles of Frames
A
nimation is the rapid display of a sequence of images
to create an illusion of movement. It is mostly achieved
with popular media like a camera, projector or a
computer screen. It is simple enough to hear this, but to
understand it is an entirely different prospect. The type of
animation seen today is a result of trial and error, research
and perseverance done by many generations. It is not as
if a genius had a brainstorm and the process of animation
developed. It started during the times of the Stone Age
Man!!!!! Yes, the stone age man and is still being developed
relentlessly. From simple cave paintings of those times to the
present day high end software produced animations, it has
come a long way and has more to achieve.
Lets learn about the milestone achievements in the
field of animation and try to understand this long process of
evolution of techniques.
SUCCESSIVE ATTEMPTS AT ANIMATION
THE MAGIC LANTERN
EARLIEST ATTEMPTS AT ANIMATION
It is a generally accepted fact that the primitive
man was a pretty observant species. They were very much
interested in the happenings around them. They were
inquisitive and always wanted to know the reason behind
what they saw. They were awed by nature, and what else is
more interesting than another living thing roamng around.
They saw the animals moving about and were anxious enough
to investigate how they could move on four legs while they
themselves could manage on two. Thus, to get a permanent
impression of what they saw, they drew the various positions
in which they found them. Of course, the story is assumed
but the outcome is true.
The Magic Lanten
The Magic Lantern is also known as the predecessor
of the modern day projector. It was an apparatus with a
concave mirror in front of a light source that gathered the
light along with the image and projected on a sceen placed in
front of it. The light source was initially an oil lamp and thus,
the projection quality was poor. As the light source changed,
the output improved.
THAUMATROPE
Earlier attempts at animation
The very first cave paintings related to animation
were those which depicted natural components like animals
or birds in action. Some of the examples proving this are
stated below:
1)A 5200 year old vase found in IRAN had 5 pictures depicting
a goat jumping to nip at a tree.
2)a wall painting, 4000 years ago from the egyptian era had
hand drawn images of soldiers in various positions of fighting.
These paintings definitely lacked fine finishing,
since they were hand-drawn, but the effort surely spurred
the future generations to improvise on it.
Thaumatrope
Thaumatrope is a toy from the Victorian era. It is
nothing but a piece of cardboard or paper attached with a
piece of string at two ends. An image is drawn at both sides
of the paper and is rotated with speed. Due to ‘persistence

of vision’, it seems as if both images are merged. The limit
is only upto two frames but the effect is pretty good. The
most popular thaumatrope is a bird on one side and a cage
on the other.
is cylindrical in shape. Thus, a mirror is not required and
several people can view it at the same time. Instead of two
circles, two cylinders are used. Rest, the concept is same.
FLIP BOOK
PHENAKISTOSCOPE
Flip Book
Phenakistoscope
Phenakistoscope is a circular object. There are
two circles evenly divided into equal parts. Both have same
centres but different radii. Frames are drawn on the inner
circle in each part. The outer circle is cut on its parts’ edge,
but only till it is excess than the smaller circle. The circles
are rotated and the reflection is seen in a mirror placed in
front. The viewer can see the frames only when it passes a
slit.
Flipbook is perhaps the most tedious and the easiest
to understand. Here, every frame of the desired animation
is drawn on a seperate page of a book n the ascending order,
starting with the first frame on the last page. When the
drawings are complete, the book is flipped and he viewer
gets a feel as if the images are moving. The best example
one can take is the flipbook of ‘Ishaan Avasthi’ from ‘Taare
Zameen Par’.
PRAXINOSCOPE
ZOETROPE
Praxinoscope
Zoetrope
Zoetrope is similar to a phenakistoscope, but
Praxinoscope is a mixture of a phenakistoscope and
a zoetrope. The apparatus itself includes a mirror in the
centre of its cylindrical build, thus enabling the viewer to
get a better output.

M
r. Peter Tan, an animator with passion and profession.
Graduate of Nanyang Polytechnic in 1999 with Diploma
in Digital Design specializing in Animation. He is
currently working with Lucas Films from last 5 years.
His first job was with Silicon Illusions as lighting artist, and
then as motion editor. He was also based in New Zealand for
a year-and-a-half, working at Weta Productions as compositor
for a TV program Jane and the Dragon. When he returned to
Singapore, he became a part-time tutor to a course on ‘Intro
to 3D’ at Nanyang Polytechnic before joining Lucas Films.
At Lucas Films, he worked on seasons 1 and 2 of the hit CG
Animated TV series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and on visual
effects for Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Transformers: The
Ride and The Avengers.
In 2009 he was transferred to ILM Singapore to work on Rango.
How challenging was your journey so far?
I was initially hired only for six months as a temporary
replacement, so I thought that since I am hired, I will work
for six months and then will go study. On seeing my work, my
seniors at ILM felt that I am doing well and it was then they
hired me permanently. So you know it is all about working
hard. Just work hard, do your shots well and give your best
efforts, is what I believe in. When the opportunity came to
work on Rango, I got selected to work in the team, as they
liked my work. It was not much of a struggle to get to where
I am now but it was more like dedicated hard work. Never
complain, always face the challenges that come by you.
How was your journey so far working with the animation
industry? Did you wanted to be an animator from the
beginning.
I always wanted to be an animator. When I was studying I was
not really good at drawing, but I gradually became pretty good
at 3D animation. I only did well in the final year of my school
where we were taught 3D animation. From there I knew that
I want to make a career in animation. We used to do a lot
of practice in our software and do some animations. Me and
some of my friends, we just did a spoof clip of Godzilla, which
was not that great but still we got a good feedback. It is such
a good feeling to get a response, even if your work is not that
good. That is what inspires you.
How was the experience of working in Rango?
It was really great. I thought we probably will be working on
backgrounds, props and all, but no we got some good shots, all
the characters that you can think of using, we got such shots.
So, I was surprised with it and I really enjoyed the work. The
work was based on lot of performance in characters; thick
work on their acting is what I enjoyed. I even got a chance
to go to San Francisco to meet the team, their team lead and
learn from them. Everyone over there is very talented and
it was great to have that opportunity to go there and learn.
Is there any specific process of animation that u follow or you
do it according to the best of your knowledge?
Animation process I follow, not really. I don’t have a fixed rule
that I always have to go different. It depends on the kind of
shot that you are doing. When it is an acting shot or a more
reality shot, it changes the way you work. The bottom line is
I just try to make the shot look good.
How loyally do you obey the principles of animation?
When you talk about animation in today’s terms, some
principles which may not apply as much when compared to
previous times. For example staging, staging is obviously
covered by the layout department, but you have to keep
that in mind while you are doing animation, but it is not that
important. When we talk about squash and stretch, when you
work for a realistic environment then you really don’t add
those cartoony squash and stretch. I do follow the principles
as it is essential. Knowing the principles is important rather
than using all of them. For example a character is scrunching
down or crouching down so it may not be squashing. So it all
depends on how you apply and where you apply is important.
Do you go out of your way to come out with something
new and different?
We try to; we always try to come up with something fresh
for the audience as much as we can. Director has a vision,
obviously we have that boundary. We always try to work
within that boundary to see what we can get. But we always
try new thing and show it to the director, he might have an
idea seeing that. Keep trying.
What is an ideal show-reel according to you, and what
would suggest the students?
Have your performance shot, have a physicality shot. It again
depends on where you are applying to, if you are applying to
a place like ILM, it is more of realistic stuff, so have realistic
animation. If applying for places like DreamWorks or Pixar,
they have more of a cartoonish animation. So when you know
where you are applying to try to have a show-reel which is
accepted by that particular studio. But the most important
is to polish your work, do it to your best and polish it until
you find no mistake, because if you don’t give out the best
of your ability, then what is the point in making a show
reel. If you do your best and it is still not enough, then
ask for feedback and improve it accordingly. That is how
you learn. I would only say keep working hard, continue
doing what you love to do. As a student deliver the
best of your work, make use of all the props and
possibilities to make your animation good. Whatever
you are doing do it to the best of your ability. You
never know when someone will look at your work
and give you a chance.

PRINCIPLES OF ANIMATION
PRINCIPLES OF ANIMATION
- Rules to obey like religion
E
ven before laws of gravity were defined or our
ancestors discovered fire they were well worked
with the art of animation. Cave drawings, Egyptian
inscriptions, Roman drawings, Carvings and others had images
of animals or humans in actions. Back then there was no
instrument or technique to play such paintings in motion, they
were not considered to be animation but they did form the
basics of animations. Yes, animations refer to sequence of
drawings when played in motion gives a sense of life to the
object. Now, we can animate an object or a person.
‘The adventures of TinTin’ is the most recent
movie which gave me a feel that I am watching a real life
movie. The reasons behind such a smooth animated movie
are principles of animation that are incorporated into the
making of it. The principles of animation are some real life
research and studies developed over the period of decades.
‘Creativity knows no bounds’ but it does have basics which
are supposed to be known or followed before proving another
statement true that is ‘Rules are meant to be broken’. The 12
Principles of animation is one such collective law that if they
are broken it leads to a disastrous result. These 12 principles
have thousands of examples to it and can be linked with one
another in comparisons with the laws of physics or math. We
will be discussing each of these 12 principles in a span of 3
issues so as to explain each principle with minute details with
as many examples as possible.
Rule #01: Straight Ahead, Pose to Pose –
What the law states, “there are two approaches to
do an animation sequence, i.e. Straight ahead and Pose to
Pose. In straight ahead the animator literally works straight
ahead, from his first drawing till the last. Pose to Pose
animation, the animator plans his actions called key frames
for each scene. The animator spends more time in designing
the key position and later on inbetween poses can be drawn
by him or his fellow animators.”
method has a combined method of execution. Rough drawings
of the characters are done to depict the movement, attitude,
position and relationship with the background. Straight Ahead
gives a chance to the animators to be spontaneous and go
wild with their knowledge about animations. Only problem
with this method is, it will very rarely work if there is strong
perspective or thought has gone in the layout and background,
which must be matched with the animation being used.
Example: Consider figure (1.A), our regular character,
the boy goes to punch.
Action: The action is very simple; the boy walks up
and punches the wall. The whole process has no key-frames. It
just has one sequence or rather one pose and last pose.
Observation: The same sequence can be animated in
a very normal manner. The simplest way it could be executed
that the character walks till the wall and then blows a punch
but it would not be effective or a slapstick comedy shot. Now
out here the animator had a chance to experiment with the
character. So what she did was made the character filled with
energy and the boy suddenly behaves like a dart and flies and
punches the wall. This could have been only possible by this
method of animation rather than Pose to Pose in which the
animator has to stick with the guidelines given to animate that
particular scene.
Both of these animation processes are still being
followed in the industry. Each of them has their own advantages
to work on.
What animation explains about Pose to Pose: -This
method uses the technique of first designing of the key frames
carefully. Later on, to make the animation smooth inbetween
What animation explains about Straight Ahead: - This poses were sketched. Pose to Pose animation has clarity
and strength to it. This method involves precision
in drawing, timing, stronger poses and a smooth
fig (1.B)
animation, only then it becomes a good shot.
Example: Look at the figure (1.B), it is a
simple walk cycle of the boy.
Action: The character is walking in one
direction without any secondary animation to it.
Observation: Walk cycle has 5 different poses

PRINCIPLES OF ANIMATION
fig (2)
to make it smooth. To make it smoother inbetween frames are
drawn. This type of animation looks boring and if there are
more inbetween then it looks more smooth and realistic.
Example: Consider figur (2), the figure
describes a boy playing lawn tennis or to be more precise he
is serving the opponent.
Conclusion for both: Both of the animation techniques
have their own set of advantages and disadvantage. In Straight
Ahead method the animator needs to add surprise elements
and has a chance or giving a smooth and interesting output and
Pose to Pose method has to be neat and clear. It needs to have
bold expressions and proper inbetweens to make it look lifelike if not real.
Action: The boy is getting ready to hit the ball, so he
tosses the ball in air and at the same time he leans back. Once
the boy is completely stretched back, he recoils in forward
direction to hit the ball. After the impact of the ball with the
racquet the ball moves in forward direction and the boy bends
in front. The ball when it comes into the contact with the
racquet, it goes in forward direction. In this whole action laws
of arcs can be prominently seen.
Rule #02: Arcs –
This Law states that, “Our body is the best to study
the principle of ARCS. It has joints for movements such that it
will move only in arcs or in circular paths. Same law is applied
to non-living objects but for them gravity force or mechanical
force plays the role of the movements in arcs.”
What animation explains: - In human body a joint is
nothing but a contact point of 2 bones. This helps in giving
movements and supports the human body for mechanical
functions. The functional joints define the degree and
smoothness in the movements. These functional joints are
constructed in circular shapes for one simple reason of smooth
movements. Not only human body but all the living things or
non-living things follow this law of movements in arcs.
Observations: The boy leans back is in the form of
an arc due the joints of bones. His front leg also bends in the
same proportionate arc while his back leg also shows the same
behaviour. When he is completely stretched back he follows
the arcs made by his hip joint and spinal cord. The circular
joints help the body to move flexibly and with agility. When
the boy recoils to his original position with full force, the
racquet contacts the balls. In this position, one more principle
is observed which is squash and stretch. But let’s focus on arcs.
Now due to gravity force acting on the ball the ball also moves
ahead in the shape of an arc.
Conclusion: The principle of ARC is not only observed
in human bodies but also in non-living things. Almost everything
moving in a particular direction follows the rule of arcs for
smooth movements. The use of this principle reduced the
rigidity of animation and proved of great help to improve the
animation.

ARENA ANIMATION, ANDHERI(W)
PRINCIPLES OF ANIMATION
Rule #03: Slow In and Slow Out–
This law states that, “If any object and is at rest, is applied
with an external force that drives the object to change it
position from one point to another. This whole process of
starting and stopping will take some time as per the law of
inertia.”
What animation explains: - Consider any action
happening, either a stone falling from a height or train leaving
the platform. It never runs with full pace or always starts
slowly. To make animation real this law is also observed and
is followed thoroughly to replicate real world actions. It can
be easily done; you just have to consider the key positions
and then fill inbetweens frames. First design the key position
of the actions or the movements of an object. Then play the
particular sequence and observe. Now an object which starts
slowly will have more key frames than the object moving
with pace. Same is the case while stopping. Stopping of an
object will have more inbetween frames rather than coming
for a halt as it will be in pace.
Example: - Consider fig. (3), let us make it our
characters car. The car is picking up pace, achieves speed
and suddenly it brakes.
Action: - When the car is at halt it has no movement
to it and is completely at rest. When it starts moving and
picking up speed the car is slow. For a simple reason ‘Laws of
Physics’. When suddenly brakes are applied the car reduces
the speed and slows down gradually.
Observation: - The gradual movement of car picking
up speed is called Slow In or Ease In. When It reaches to its
pace so the factor of slow in has diminished. While showing
this in animation, the key frames will have more inbetweens.
When it has reached its pace and slow in has diminished
completely then inbetween frames can be omitted to show
in pace. The same procedure is repeated while the car
is stopping and it is called Slow Out or Ease Out. For the
car to halt completely, it takes some time. To show this in
animation there will be more in inbetween frames between
the key frames of the car stopping
Conclusion: This principle is used in
our regular day to day life. While
animating any shot or sequence this needs
to be considered. Now deciding whether to use
this principle leniently or sparing is to be decided by the
animators or in the pre-production stage. Working with this
principle can create wonders with the animations but again
this is one principle which cannot be exaggerated as it can
spoil the timing of the shot.
Rule #04: Squash and Stretch –
This law states that, “when an object is in motion
for example falling from a particular height the law of gravity
takes over it and deforms its shape. However, this law is used
to define the weight of the object drawn. Now the object
can be as simple as a ball or as complicated as muscles of
human faces. This law affects only the shape of the object
and not the volume. When this law is applied proportionally
then it gives a realistic feel to it, but if over done can give a
comical effect or animations gone wrong feels to it.”
What animation explains: -This is one of the most
important laws to define weight of the object drawn on
paper. The sole purpose of this law is to give the object a
feeling of weight. In real life only the most rigid objects
like chair, stone, iron ball, etc do not show this particular
principle. Rest anything with flesh and bones no matter how
skinny they show this principle on a remarkable extent. If
the character is fleshy or fat it follows this principle the
best and watching this is all the more fun. If there is are
shape transitions from one drawing to another then this law
is observed and makes the transitions very smooth.

ARENA ANIMATION, ANDHERI(W)
PRINCIPLES OF ANIMATION
To give life to the objects this law
should be shown but if overdone can make the
animation look unreal.
Example:- Consider fig. (4), the figure describes a
boy swinging from a rope and suddenly the rope slips from his
hand in the mid-way eventually having a fall.
Observation: -To scrutinize it by the laws of
animation then this illustration obey laws of squash and
stretch, ease in and ease out and arcs. Let’s concentrate on
Squash and Stretch principle. Till the time the character is
in the air, the laws of stretching are observed on the rope
as well as on the character. As soon as the rope slips from
character’s hand, the character continues to fall towards
the ground but the rope recoils back and shows the law of
squashing. The character which continues to fall towards the
ground keeps getting stretched. The moment he touches the
ground the character starts getting squashed.
Conclusion: -This law adds up life in the character.
The major factor to take under consideration is the character’s
shape changes but not its volume. This law should be obeyed
frequently to show the weight of an object and bring life to
the drawing. fig (4)

650D
C
anon’s latest entrant to its EOS DSLR
family and a successor to its previous
EOS600D is 650D. Canon EOS digital
SLR 650D is a subsequent step to innovation
rather than invention by introduction of new
touch screen LCD and a hybrid APS-C sensor.
This camera is perfect for novice buyers or
enthusiast who want to upgrade from their
point and shoot. The only new eye-popping upgrade to the
camera is the capacitive multi-touch responsive screen.
Being capacitive screen it is contact sensitive rather than
resistive screen making it pressure screen. It takes multiinput gestures as well.
DESIGN AND BUILT
Being the successor of EOS 600D, 650D has to have a
swivel screen. There are no other changes noticeable changes
in the body of the camera. The look and feel of 600D and
650D are similar. However, the material used for the making
of the camera is stainless steel, polycarbonate and glass
fibre making it a very sturdy yet lightweight. It is for the
first time canon has given a dedicated mode with the on/
off switch to the video mode. The play and delete button’s
placement and design is not user-friendly if the user has a fat
thumb like me or probably people will get used to it , after
viewing and deleting images over time. It was very hard to
let it go unnoticed that there are 2 grills on the in-built flash
assembly. That is where speakers reside inside the camera.
The mic- input slot, mini HDMI out, remote shutter in and USB
connection slot has been segregated and are placed apart
from each other. This layout gives some breathable space to
the user to reach out to any one of the input slots. The touch
screen integration isn’t a bad idea to reach out to functions
quickly is good and there is no airs left between the glass
and the screen ensuring no glares are seen . The casing in
which the screen is housed looks rugged and ready to be
adventurous. I would still not suggest to go crazy with the
touch panel of the screen. Besides these small touch-ups and
makes there is no major cosmetic change in the camera.
FEATURES
What lies inside a camera is always that I am
fascinated from. Canon EOS 650D has proved it this time by
introducing much needed processing power. Yes the Digic V
power, which has not only improved the camera’s performance
but also has increased the burst mode capture from usual
3.4 fps to 5fps. The sensor is first of its kind 18mp hybrid
APS-C senor which ensures fast focusing speed. The technique
used by this hybrid sensor is that it now not only based on
contrast but also phases of pixels. It was pretty astonishing
to see the performance of both, especially in video mode this
has proved to be boon for all the auto-focus frenzies. The
AF mode with the help of phase detection tracks the objects
and locks the focus. It records full HD video at 30fps, 25fps
and 24fps with an external mic input for pro video shooters.
Thanks to the new upgraded sensor and digic V processor the
image quality is considerably good. In low light conditions
after pumping the ISO till 6400 there were high amount of
grains in the image but good enough for hobbyists to make it
go unnoticed. The much talked about this camera or anybody,
‘how can touch screen benefit?’ Well to answer that, touch
sensitive screen if required after using it in the live-view
mode. Just like auto-focus smart phones, one touch on
the camera’s screen and that particular area starts getting
focused. This is the only good thing about a touch sensitive
screen and proves very helpful while shooting videos or in live
view. It saves time of dragging the AF box to the required AF
area manually using the navigation buttons. The touch screen
can consume more battery giving less battery life, which
cannot be compromised.
VERDICT
For the pros it cannot make a good spare camera
and for newbie’s or entrants who want to capture images or
maybe even videographers this is a good deal. The processor
and sensor is the only 2 good reasons to buy this camera.
It is indeed a powerful device, delivering excellence but
compromising on the battery life and durability and reliability.
If Canon would have simply upgraded the processor and sensor
it would have been a deal. It is not worth upgrading from a
500D series.
Camera is just a tool to show people what you think?

D3200
30fps, 25fps and 24fps. However the low light performance is
good till 1600ISO after that the image quality starts degrading.
The best feature is the microphone input given which can be
a plus point for all the armature video shooters.
VERDICT
N
ikon has introduced a new camera on its entry level
list, Nikon D3200 represents the latest generation and
boasts an amazing 24.2 megapixels. Within 18 months
of release of Nikon D3100 they launched with D3200 which
I always wonder that there must be some problem with the
D3000 family. They get updated a lot. The features to look out
for in D3200 are the new and totally upgraded senor, which
inturn solves many quality issues including focus lock during
video shooting.
Nikon D3200 is no doubt a very good upgrade and an
amazing update by Nikon. I am just hoping it does not have
an update to it very soon. It is definitely a better upgrade for
those who are thinking to upgrade from D3000 or D3100. It
may even be better than D5100 but there are rumours in the
market about D5200. It is a very powerful entry level camera.
I would suggest considering this a strong option. It comes
with a standard 18-55mm kit lens. Full HD video recording at
30/25/24 fps, a 24.2 megapixel sensor with Expeed 3 Image
processor, a better button lay woth considerable cosmetic
changes and Nikon promise of quality is indeed a choice to
reconsider all the camera buys.
DESIGN AND BUILT
The body of Nikon D3200 is identical to D3100’s body.
D3200 has a plastic body which at such a high price range
is not expected. It does not feel robust but it is very well
justified by the use of classy rubber coating on the grip as
well as on the thumb rest at the back of the camera. It is
little smaller than D3100, D3100 is a DSLR with the size of a
semi-professional cameras. The access to the buttons is made
very easy in comparison with D3100. The hand gets a proper
grip on the D3200 and with one-touch full 1080p HD recording,
quick access Live-View mode and ISO range it is much better.
As far as cosmetic changes are concerned it did get very nice
upgrades.
FEATURES
Inside this camera rests a very powerful sensor
with a superior processor. This update has helped and gave
a new definition to entry level DSLRs. Nikon has integrated
24.2megapixel DX CMOS sensor which delivers 6010x4000
resolution images. To handle such huge file sizes it is supported
by an EXPEED 3 image processor. This combination delivers
power packed performance and improved image quality.

GAME REVIEW

D
arksiders
2
is
the
continuation
of the first part.
In the beginning
there was War
and now you get
to be Death.
The game is
set in a postapocalyptic
world where the demons
rule
and
humans are extinct species. It is
satiated with amazing environment that gives a dark feeling
to the game. The first part was more about slaughtering than
explorations. This instalment allows you to discover the world
as we know it in ruins. The game is a fine balance between
action and adventure. However it seems that the game has
elements taken from various other big games such as God of
War, Prince of Persia etc. It provides a fairly decent gameplay
that seems to grow into to you as you proceed further with it.
STORY AND SCRIPT
The story is a continuation of the first but with a
different protagonist. You are Death one of the four horsemen
of apocalypse. The concept states that when the balance
between good and evil, light and darkness is broken then the
horsemen are called upon to restore balance. In the first part
War comes to intervene the battle between angels and demons.
It is said that he is the one who brought the apocalypse and
doomed all of mankind. At present he is proving his innocence
in the Charred Council and Death is out looking for answers to
save his brother and bring back mankind. He is the kinslayer
and the executioner.
GRAPHICS AND VFX
The graphics in the game is good but not good enough
to compliment the characters and the amazing environment
that it revolves around. The architectures in the game are
pretty good that brings out the essence of apocalyptic world.
The ruins and hidden dungeons are well built. The concept
of heaven as White city is nicely done. They were able to
depict it in their own way which was still very convincing.
The eternal throne is portrayed with huge skeleton statues
and sharp edged buildings. It is a place where the dark lords
rule. It is good that the developers have gone far to keep
the smallest of details in consideration that is best suited to
each locations. When I saw the death planes it was entirely
different from what I expected. It is the place of death, not
exactly an evil place but a place where balance is maintained.
The game contains statues and architectures with great depth
and details. Everything in the environment that you see is built
in a humongous scale so that you feel like you’re in the game.
All in all the game delivers a wide range of nice locations and
cool characters to smash and slash. Visually the game is pretty
appealing with good effects. The elemental effects that
are shown in the game are radical. Weapon slashes, power
strikes, enemy powers etc. all have great effects that add
excitement to the game.

GAME REVIEW
Death facing his opponent
and skills upgrade that will allow your character to reach the
next level. Every level you achieve during the game you get
a skill point. This can be used to get new skills available
in the skill tree. One of the fascinating part in the
game is that when you get a weapon or any kind
of armour, the statistic of the same is displayed.
This helps in customizing your character with
the most efficient armour and weapons suited
for battle. The game is well made but has few
performance issues and glitches. However
the breath taking action seems to keep
one hooked with the game.
VERDICT
GAMEPLAY
It is a combination of God of War and Prince of Persia.
You take control of Death and wield your way to the depths
of darkness. It is all about cutting and slashing with a good
action adventure. It is a third person game which is really
cool, because you get to see Death in action. The world is
big with vast maps and location that can be explored. There
are main quest and side quest. The side quest allows you to
gain rewards and help you level up. You have boss and side
boss fights that are epic. There are different monsters and
creatures to fight with. It keeps you on the edge and gives
you a good gaming experience. There is also an option of fast
travel which allows you to teleport from one place to another.
This is usually done through a vendor called Vulgrim, also a
demon. He provides you with various upgrades and weapons
that is unlocked with your progress. Death has a horse called
Despair. It aids in travelling places, usually in a free ground.
Then there is Dust a Raven that guides you. Death has a
primary weapon, usually a pair of scythes which has a fast and
heavy impact. The secondary weapon can be a hammer or axe
which has slow mobility but massive damage. The movements
of the character are very fluid and flexible. You can swim,
run on walls, and grab ledges. Death can transform into grim
reaper form which makes him more powerful and has more
abilities to damage his opponents. You have weapons upgrade
It is a much better game
than its predecessors but does lack
in execution. A well conceptualised
game with good scope. The game
is a good balance between fights,
narration and adventure. It gives a
little bit of a breathing

between
the

which
is a good thing
rather
than

rampage.
The
developers could
have done better
on
the

aspect of the game
with better details.
One would say
that the game
has not been able
to live up to the
expectations. Well
in my opinion it’s a
fairly decent game to
keep you engaged in a
fierce battle and above
all there is nothing more
awesome than being Death or The Reaper.

MOVIE REVIEW
Did the extinct ice creatures made it large this time?
I
ce Age – Continental Drift is the fourth instalment with
promising adventure extravaganza. Somehow I felt this
one was a better movie than the previous one. The first
Ice Age was the best but then it was all downhill from the
second part. Continental Drift is entertaining enough to
keep ones attention in place. The movie will put you on
the edge, when the gang of three set sail to experience
yet another adventure. It has good humour that will keep
you entertained. The movie is suited for people of all
ages as it provides you with good humour.
The film was co-directed by Steve
Martino (“Robots”) and Michael
Thurmeier (“Ice Age: Dawn of
the Dinosaurs”co-director) from
a screenplay by Michael Berg,
who co-wrote the original “Ice
Age,” and Jason Fuchs, making
his feature debut.
SCRIPT
The story is decent and simple. Mother Nature
takes its course and the continent Pangaea starts tearing
apart. This shift of plates starts causing problem for the
habitants of the continent. During this moment Manny
(Ray Romano) gets separated from his family and he’s
left with Diego (Denis Leary) and Sid (John Leguizamo) to
make their way back home. During their quest they come
across sea creatures, pirates and sirens, with this they
are found battling for their survival. Sirens are basically
creatures that lure you by greed to feed on you. They
come across a band of pirates captained the stud ruthless
chimp ‘Captain Gutt’ (voiced by Peter Dinkage). The entire
movie revolves around the battle between the two groups
as one side tries to loot the other and the other trying to
survive and get back to their home. However Manny and
his gang do not remain calm and plot to retaliate back
with the help of ginny pigs. Shira (Jennifer Lopez) from
Captain Gutts’ crew is found between crossroads and is
compelled to choose between loyalty and love. Sid with
his wise comments is a source of constant amusement but
it is actually granny who turns out to be the centre of
attraction. In all this madness and confusion lies the very
essence of the movie, an epic adventure of full laughter.
VOICE OVERS
Voice over was done well and it really compliment
the expressions of the characters. Ray Romano (Manny),
Denis Leary (Diego) and John Leguizamo (Sid) has been as
usual great in their voice overs. They have really gone

far this time in order to make their characters very lively.
Peter Dinkage has done a great job as Captain Gutt. We
may know him from the series Game of Thrones. He has
been able to deliver the brute nature of a pirate captain.
Jennifer Lopez as Shira has done a fair job. Apart from
them Queen Latifah (As Ellie) and Keke Palmer (As Peaches)
has given a good performance.
ANIMATION, VISUALS AND SOUND
As far as animation is concerned Blue Sky Studio
has done a fantastic work. The movie is attractive with
really good environment. The characters are well animated
and there are no signs of disruptions. The sirens are well
conceptualised with a little hint of Greek mythology,
even though they are not believed to look like that. But
in animal world it’s well suited. The opening scene with
Scrat and his mishap that caused the continental drift
was amazing and humorous. There are stunning visuals
in the movie and it makes full use of 3D.The scene when
the three are fighting their way through the storm in
their so called ice boat is amazing. The giant carb and his
mishap are just hilarious. The use of visuals in the movie
is imaginative and colourful. You would not want to miss
this experience in 3D. I feel that the movie is best watched
in 3D with every scene devouring you into the animated
world of prehistoric creatures. The sound effects are top
notch with some amazing background score. The small
musical scene in between the movie on the pirate ship was
just too good. The soundtracks “Chasing the Sun” Written
by Example and Alex Smith, performed by The Wanted
and “We Are” written by Ester Dean’ and FRESHMEN III’
performed by Keke Palmer are worth hearing. They really
seem to get the feel of the movie.
that is lacking is, character development. However this
should not stop you from experiencing the fun that it has
to offer. The movie might be a little on the childish side
but even grown-ups would enjoy it.
VERDICT
The fourth instalment seemed to be a risk in the
Ice Age series, but it gave us more than what was expected
after the previous part. The movie does not have any
moral lessons but it’s just sheer fun. Movie is energetic
and has frequent amusements that will keep you gripped
with the story. The kids will be delighted to watch this
movie. A very appealing movie and it has a firm footing in
gaining attention. It has a lot to offer in terms of humour,
adventure, visuals and animation, and action sequences.
Overall it is a nice family entertainment.

Showcase your talent
H
ere is a site that caters to the need to display artwork
of creative heads all around in a variety of creative
fields ranging from graphic designing, animation,
photography to music and fashion. The artwork is asked
upon by professionals from the industry and is verified by
them. Appropriate credit and appreciation is given to the
participants by them. All this happens on the site known as
“talenthouse.com”.
Talenthouse.com is like a “medium” site between
the users and the industry. Any person or organization that
wants to organize a competition can contact this website
and host its competition here. Users can simply become a
member of this site and participate in various competitions
posted and hosted.
The competitions itself are pretty interesting.
Well known companies like Nerolac, Clean & Clear,
Pepsi, etc are known to have hosted competitions on
this site. And they are on a variety of topics. It ranges
from animation, music, art, writing to even photography.
Thus, a person with talent in even any one field of art can
participate through this medium. Most of the prizes are
credit based. The participant whose entry wins is used in
the company’s promotional activities. Cash prizes are also
kept, depending on the hosting company.
Talented participants from all over the world
come here to compete, thus the exposure is great. One
can create an account and share the experiences with
Home Page of Talenthouse.com Global
other likeminded artists. One can even follow the account
and know the progress. Since the competitions are held by
industry professionals, the evaluation and results, too, are
conducted on the same level. A participant gains practical
industrial knowledge. One can know how the industry really
works and can prepare himself/herself for it accordingly.
As for the site interface, it is simple, interesting
and complete. All the competitions posted are aligned
in an ascending order. Each dialogue box is given a
mouse rollover effect which displays the status of the
competition. Therefore, the user does not have to open a
new page every time he/she wants to participate. On the
top are the various options given for the various faces of
the site, like its community page, blog page, login page,
information page, etc. at the bottom the user will find its
contact page, terms and conditions page and its copyright.
But the competitions are not regular here. As
and when the site receives clients, they are announced. A
person cannot know when the next competition will come.
He/she has to regularly keep on checking the site. Also,
the genre is not fixed. The next demand a company may
make maybe regarding what the user does not know. They
are totally random.
Yet do not be discouraged to check this site on a
regular basis. Who knows when you field of interest pops
up. Go on, grab the opportunity and show the world what
you can do.

Challenge your talent
Y
ou have a talent for animation and don’t know how
to showcase it? Your work is eating up space on
your hard disk without giving you any satisfaction
of making it? You want to know what can be done using
the same software you use and produce better results? Or
are you simply bored and want to see something new and
entertaining online? The answer is 11secondclub.com.
A cool website to surf and learn. It is a New York
based competition website for character animation. A
sound clip is uploaded every month and all that the user
has to do is make an animation movie according to the
audio. The content and the medium of the video can be
of the choice of the participant. You can make a video
using stop motion, 2D animation or 3Danimation. No bar
on that.
It is a fantastic showcase for your art, as
mentioned earlier, since all the entries are posted, along
with the reviews it has achieved from the jury. This helps
one to know where he/she is lagging and where progress
can be made. Along with the experts view, the normal
members of the site also can post comments regarding
the artwork. It gives both, a critical and a general outlook
of you creation. Also, if your work is good enough and is
appreciated by industry personnel (which surely will be),
there’s a chance that you may get a job opportunity!
The competitions are on a monthly basis. There’s
11secondclub winner
a new sound clip every month and participants have to
work upon the current audio only. The rules and regulations
are simple enough and anyone can participate without any
hitches. The rating is done only on the basis of the quality
of character animation done. Additional rendering done
in 2D or 3D is not given much weightage. All the entries
of the competition are uploaded on the main page in an
ascending order of its rank, and can be viewed freely, just
to take reference or for entertainment, all up to you.
The website has a layout accentuating what it
is meant for. It has graphical animations along with its
mascot at the bottom. The graphics on the site are creative
and grab the user’s attention easily. The effects added to
the site are also catchy. The site is a bit heavy and takes
some time to load up. Thus, users with a slow internet
connection are at a bit of a loss. But seeing that the site
focuses on animation, it becomes sort of necessary.
So, go out there and show your creativity. Get the
best of the professionals behind the scenes. Do not worry
about winning or losing, but learn and enjoy the creative
art of animation in an out of the box, practical and a funky
way.

These are some questions and statements that
have become a filter, reasons for qualification or
disqualification and grounds for discrimination in our
society. In such circumstances, it is important to
highlight the role of ‘Knowledge’ which is perhaps
the greatest leveller – a force which can successfully
overcome all these prejudices.
With “The power of Knowledge” as the
central theme, Sony Entertainment Television
announced yet another path breaking marketing
and communication campaign ‘Sirf Gyaan
Hi Aapko Aapka Haq Dilata Hai’ as the
communication theme for the upcoming
season of ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’2012.
I always
believed
that
for a show like
Kaun
Banega
Crorepati,
which has been
on air since so
long and is so well
established, the campaign needs to
be fresh and electrifying to keep
alive the interest of the viewers in
the show. Mainly because all the
things are more or less the same
in the show, including the host,
so it is really important to have
such kind of advertising.
After
the
previous
seasons’ campaigns ‘Koi

Chhota Nahin Hota’,
Bhikam-Bada Baap commercial clip
SET this year comes up with more interesting point of views
on the various biases that our country is blighted with. The
campaign is conceptualized by Leo Burnett, the creative
agency for Sony Entertainment Television.
The first television commercial I came across was
the one showcasing the life of Bhikam, life of a normal poor
Indian person. The advertisement starts in a very interesting
way with is an annual sports day held in a school, and
narration by Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. The little kid wins the
race but due to the influence of the other kid’s Big Daddy, he
is given the third position. Then after that the ad continues
with Bhikam preparing hard for his exams, but alas! There
also a Big Daddy’s i.e. trustee’s son takes away his 1st
position with the help of the professor writing the exams for
him. Poor Bhikam could not even travel properly in the train
too, as a VIP Daddy’s son takes away his seat. When he goes
for a job interview, the moment he is to get a job again a
Bade Baap’s influence takes away his job. Bhikam deserted by
his fate disheartenedly says that only a Big Daddy’s son wins
in the actual race of life. And then Bhikam is on the hot seat
of KBC and Mr. Amitabh Bachchan announces that he has won
Rs. 50,00,000/-. When asked by Bhikam’s father about his
feelings he says he is proud to be known as the father of his
son. The TVC finally ends with the central theme of the
campaign, quoting “Ek din baap ka

This ad has a fantastic concept and a
wonderful script. The USP of this commercial is
the simple and mind blowing language. Although
there is nothing special about the language but the
way it is being delivered includes both message
and humour in it. The problem showcased in the
above ad is one of the most common problems
which are faced by many common Indian men. The
influence of Big Daddies is present everywhere in
our society as a result of which the common men
have to suffer. The voice of Mr. Amitabh Bachchan
is adding on to the essence of the ad. The actors
have done a commendable job. The dialogue
delivery and expressions are fantastic. In all, the
concept is fantastic and is presented brilliantly.
again could not reply properly. When he went
for the job interview he again had to face
disappointment despite of his brilliant marks.
But then Bhaskar lands on KBC and wins Rs.
50,00,000/-. When Mr. Bachchan announces
his victory he readily adds to his statement
that he won it being a Hindi medium student.
The commercial concludes with Mr. Amithbh
Bachchan giving away the message that “Bhasha
Bhasha me antar jo hai wo chu mantar ho jata
hai, Sirf gyan hi aapko aapka hak dilata hai.”
Again this ad too has a fantastic
concept, wonderful script, amazing and
powerful dialogues, and incredible acting
done by the actors. The concept is one thing
that I liked the most in the commercial. India’s
national language is Hindi but it is given no
importance these days instead English has
become the prime language in today’s India.
The advertisement in all is wonderful.
Both the advertisements have amazing
concepts which reflects the problem of the
Indian society and are very well executed. If the
advertisements are to be rated they both will be
5 on 5.

The next ad that was on the television
featured a college teenager called Bhaskar, who
has poor English speaking skills. The ad starts
with Bhaskar’s first day in the college. In the
class he greets everyone in a very funny way,
due to which he is insulted in the class, but he
innocently thanks them. Thereafter he is teased
by his college mates by calling him Hindi medium,
to which he again moves forward. Even the girls
avoid him as if he has some deadly disease. In
the college play audition also he is not given any
appropriate role. Innocent Bhaskar did not bother
and accepted the role of the flower given to him.

of animations. Then he went on to give some examples
of movies made in such a way and showed how creativity
could be used in it and how to handle it. He gave a brief
introduction of every type of animation; the process involved
in it and explained the process in detail for stop motion.

Then came the most important part of the workshop.
It involved explaining the 12 principles of animation in detail.
He did it in a very humorous way which provided a lot of
information and entertainment to the students. He gave an
example for every principle and explained it on paper as well
as practically. Finally, he made a short stop motion movie
made by cut outs using a web-cam and gave the students an
inspiration to make similar movies using the creativity they
had.

than actual Bollywood feature films. The session was very
helpful to develop the knowledge of film-making.

FILM MAKING
PRE-PRODUCTION
Detailed tour of Pre-production
A
film is remembered in many ways it can be good or can be
bad as devil’s visit to Disney land or it may have the right
cast that pull up a movie from turbulence of bad script. The
movie that does shake our lives or are one of the reasons to think
differently is the movie with a great script or a story. One of my
favorite movies from recent times is Kahaani released in 2012
and directed, co-produced and written by Sujoy Ghosh. The
beauty of the movie was that it gripped the viewers from the
start till the end. That is when the climax is properly timed. The
movie was flawless with brilliant cinematography and editing. It
had appropriate character designing which supported the script
and at the end was a hit. Sujoy Ghosh did have some magic in
his story and he took some serious liberties to twist and turn
the plots and scripts. He knew how to play with the minds of
people and he did that very well.
Before a film or a story gets into production stage it has
to go through 6 rigorous stages of pre-productions, each more
challenging than the previous to get an award winning output.
This article will be discussing on a film’s scripting process or
the pre-production stage, now be it a 5 minutes short film ,
a 30 minutes of well planned documentary or a 30 seconds
advertisement. They all have one thing in common that is a
‘concept’.

Concept does not have a particular definition to it. It
changes as per the context it being used in. Philosophers
define it as concepts formed by different experiences, and
pre-existing ideas that create and abstract which is formerly
done by the operations of brain. Concept in terms of film
making or scripting is called a general idea of the whole
story. A concept should be small and simple; it can be as
short as sad, happy, dark, contrasting or social satire. Some
have a tendency to narrate the whole story under the tag
of concept and probably bore the listener.
HOW TO GET A CONCEPT?
Concept is always developed from an idea. Idea
can also be a dream or real life experience. Our life is
surrounded by beautiful ideas, which we always tend
to neglect it. A concept or a film always evolves from
personal experiences. To get a concept, having a vision
to see things differently is a must and to develop that
particular concept is to watch and learn from more and
more movies.
STORY
A story is always developed from a concept. It has many
facts that need to be considered while making a story. Making
a story is easy but making a good story is difficult. Story always
have 2 characters one who believes in the script or has a positive
attitude, called protagonist, it can be a group of people or an
individual. The other one is called antagonist, they can also be
a group of people opposing or just one character causing a stir
in the protagonist’s life. A protagonist and the antagonist need
not be the same. They can have their own cause to be in the
story. A story can be just an expression of any event that must
have happened, or can also be an imagination which can be
exaggerated. An event will have many experiences now the
questions comes that what would you like to make people see?
While making a story and adding each and every character in
the story, it is very important to have a reason for a character
to be in the plot. Ask the question “why is that character in
the script? And how is that character helping the script?”
HOW TO REFINE A STORY AND ITS
TECHNICALITIES?
A story should have a good concept and a team who
believes in the script while developing it. Having human
emotions is the most important part while telling a story.
A story is not what you tell, a story is how you tell and
make people believe in your story. Keep it simple and
effective, adding twist and turns are part and parcel of a
good showman ship but taking a story to whole new plot
creating characters for no reasons adding twist can be a
recipe for disaster and a blockbuster flop.
Technicalities for an Ideal story: A story with
a good start has an increasing slope till establishments
follows and holds the line. There is a steep drop at the
anti-climax and then again picks up the slope maintaining
the graph line and drops at climax and ends with a smooth
drop.
SCRIPTING AND DIALOGUE
After the story is completed each character
is designed according to the story’s requirements, and
the part of scripting and dialogue comes into effect.
Scripting is the process of breaking the story into shots,
scenes and sequences. It has every minute detail in
the form of a literature. Visuals are not present in this
stage. In this process the shoot locations for live actions
and the backgrounds for animated films is decided. I

would also advice to doodle thumbnail sketching as you
move along the story, so as to clear out the confusion
and to help in the later stages of stoyboarding. While
scripting is known for its details it has a mentioning of
scene, shot and sequence as well as the dialogues. As
far as dialogues are conserned, they need to be smart
and witty. Regular day to day dialogues get boring but if
mixed with a handful of new versions, they indeed are
in a win situation for a movie.
detailed graphical illustrations. Storyboard comprises of
scene details, within that if there are different camera
Scripting has point wise breakdown of the
complete story, with the right amount of details in it.
It is like assembling a story in a very mechanical way
‘part by part’.
SCREENPLAY
Screenplay is a visual representation of how and
what will be the flow of the story on screen. The only
mania is that the whole representation will be drafted
on papers. Yes, it does sound a hectic job but if this
step is executed with keen interest and precision
the movie will no doubt turn out good. Screenplay
defines what will be played on screen. The sole
objective of this step is to save production times
and make necessary changes before the video has
started shooting. This process saves time and cost of
shooting also decreases. It also helps in finalizing the
characters if any cast change is required.
STORY BOARD
Story Board is a process of making detailed
thumbnails with sketches. It is a process of
graphically organizing the screenplay, in the form
of illustrations or images displayed in sequence for
pre-visualizing the story. The art of storyboarding
has developed from comics. It is an essential
part as it helps in pre-visualizing with the help of

angles then they become shots. Storyboard is the most
detailed stage of pre-production and segregated with
minute details. It has to be mentioned in depth that
if there is a dialogue then it has to be mentioned
else if there is an action it has to be mentioned.
SHOT BREAKDOWN
Shot breakdown is a very simple but a
very important process. It is nothing but a small
chart which has details like which scene/shot has
been recorded and what is the footage number. To
make it simple for the director and the director of
photography this process is required. Some also
like to specify the camera angles. Shot-breakdowns
helps production unit to decide whether to shoot
the film linearly or non-linearly.
Make Script and Screenplay so strong
that shooting it becomes just a formality. – Rahul
Sharma.

T
he most tragic and memorable project of
2D in Arena Animations, Andheri is finally
complete and ready to be released. Let us
hear it from the makers of the epic Eklavya trailer
themselves how was the making of the short film.
1.Ram
It was my first project and we had an
amazing experience. I mostly did background
painting and character animation. Rajeev Manial
Sir taught us a lot of a lot. We had one tragic
experience that on the day before our submission
8 files got corrupt, and we did not have a backup.
We all worked for the whole day and night and
managed to somehow complete those files. This
was one very important thing that we learned
that we should always have a backup of our work.
2.Vishal
It was my first project in Arena. In this
short film we have done realistic animation and
drawings. Gained a very good knowledge of
human anatomy, and learned how to
make a short film. My role was of key
animator, sound editing, compositing
and final animation and retouching.
When our files crashed and we made
them again in one night, then that
quality did not come that we had got
in the previous animation sequences.
We all worked as a team and had our
project finished on time. Rajeev Manial
Sir’s contribution was commendable.
If he would not have been there to
support us and guide us we probably
couldn’t have finished it.
4.Richa
Experience was quite good as I was
working for the first time for the short film. There
were many new things, new ways which I have
learnt while doing this project. We know about
tools and ways but actual implementation can be
learnt only when we practically apply it. We went
through many problems. The most important thing
that I have learned is how to work in a group.
My main role was to design backgrounds. Learn
to create background with very short available
material. We went through many difficulties bur
personally which I went went through was the
colour scheme and colour tones.
3.Yanik
We had an amazing experience
working together in our first project. I
had done animation and compositing. The
project was very challenging
and we had lot of fun
working in the project.
Rajeev Manial Sir helped
us a lot in our project
and we are really
grateful to him for
his support.

project is going to release very soon.
1.Junid
It was a nice experience to work on a
project like this. There were many works which we
did not do before but now came to know about them
too. I mainly did rigging, animation and rendering.
Rigging was never done before by me so there were
a lot of problem in the beginning, but with the help
of Shailesh Sir and Bhaskar Sir it became easy. The
biggest problem was with the expressions of the
characters. They had to be done 4 to 5 times to get
the perfect output.
2.Riddhesh
It was our first project and was amazing; we
learned a lot of new things. With work it was also fun
working in a team together. The work that I did were
mainly scripting, rigging and rendering. Scripting was
tough and took time too. We had to write the scenes
of the story and only then could we start our work.
The faculty members helped us a lot.
3.Ganesh
Wonderful experience it was, to work for
a professional level. The time limitation was the
biggest factor, which had to manage. Working in a
group is very important in our profession and that
is one thing we learned and even enjoyed. Rigging,
texturing and animation were done by me. Modeling
was a tough job as the mesh had to be taken special
care of because if it is not proper the animation
becomes difficult. Under the guidance of Shailesh Sir
and Bhaskar sir it became easy for us.
4.Prasad
We were introduced to the level of work
to be done in a professional level. No one knew
The experience was very good to work
in such a large scale project, for the first time. I
was responsible for animation, camera animation
and rendering. While doing animation the major
problem was with the expressions of the characters.
I was doing camera animation for the first time. It
helps in doing animation as well the positions of the
characters are known.
6.Rakesh
I had never worked with so many people
before. It was the first project for all of us. It was
very nice to work with all of the team members. I
had done Character modeling, texturing and video
editing. It was a great experience. Now I have the
confidence to make a character all by myself.
7.Hitesh
We had a very good experience doing this
project. I did Background and character props
modeling, texturing and video editing. Before
modeling the background and character
props their drawings were made hence
modeling became easy. But texturing
was a bit difficult as we had to do
the texturing of them 2-3 times for
getting the quality of work.
8.Bhargava
Had a lot of
fun doing the project
and working with the
group. The quality of
work had to be really
good so we had to
work really hard. I had
to do a walk cycle of a
character for almost 20
time to get that level of
perfection. We are really
greatful and thankful
to Sumit Sir, Bhaskar Sir
and Shailesh Sir for their
help and support. They all
became an integral part
of out team.

ho can forget the world famous Walt Disney for
creating one of the very first cartoons, the Mickey
Mouse. Well in the present sense it means linking the
series of drawings and stimulating their moments together.
It is a rapid display of 2D or 3D images to create an illusion
of motion. It is an art form in which inanimate objects are
brought into life by sequencing the drawn images.
Animation is emerging as a special form of media now
days. Animation is growing into a multi-billion dollar industry
generating a great scope of employment for those who are
ready to try their skills into it. From a simple flip book to the
computer 3D animation of stories, animation involves a lot
of hard work and long hours of thorough planning. This field
being new to the Indian sector has a lot of hidden potential
and talent, which needs to be properly groomed and exploited
according to the international standards.
3D animation and 2D animation is a complete
teamwork and works on the creative ideas. 3D animation itself
is a combination of wide variety of career combinations. The
various steps included in the making of a 3D animation movie
consist of:

As a junior animator or trainee one can get between
Rs.10000- 15000 per month. A three to five year experienced
animator will get 25000 to 50000. And a well-experienced
animator who has a good portfolio of excellent animation
work could easily get 800000- 150000 per month. Now let us
now take a look at some of the career opportunities that are
available in 2D and 3D animation.

INDUSRTY INTERVIEW
AMBASSADOR
OF THE
BRANDS
Chat with a lead brand establisher
M
iss Brakha Dattani, a graphic designer by passion, superb
visualizer by profession and proud owner of Barkha’s
Brand Clinic. Her concept of clinic is different, she
treats and establishes brand and monitors brands’ health with
a well co-ordinated team. Her clinic has served some of the
leading brands from various fields in the industry. She started
her career early but her clinic has completed 5 glorious years
of success. Here she is sharing a few words with us.
About the Company?
We are a brand establishment company and our
expertise is in design logos and making brand strategies. Big
or small we design logos for all the brands. Logo designing
has become our forte but we design brand strategies for
the companies as well. We have a meter in our company to
measure the health of the brand, i.e. Barkha’s Brand Health
Meter, where we measure the brand weekly and monthly
according to the market shares, sales revenue, goodwill and
all of that. We scrutinise the reports and then we design
strategies for that particular brand.
the target group of the brand, what will be the impact of that
brand on the people, and likewise we analyse and scrutinise
the market trend before coming up to a design of a logo.
The research team passes on their report to the visualising
team. They then understand the brand and come up with
sketches of brand’s logo with suitable colour and designs that
is appropriate for the brand. Finally the designers, keeping
in mind the brand and the client’s need, design the logo with
their own creativity.
Message for the students?
The three D’s of life, Dedication, devotion and
discipline towards your work is important, but I believe
that whatever career you take up, be it designing, 2D, 3D,
animation or any other in the field you work, you should enjoy
the work. If you enjoy the work you are doing, you bring the
best in yourself, which will lead to automatic growth in your
career. So keep enjoying your work and flourish.
Thought behind Barkha’s Brand Clinic?
At an early age, in my teens I started my career
with exhibitions. We had done a lot of exhibitions, as our
stall designs were exhibited. Conceptualising and marketing
was also a part of selling the stalls for the exhibition. When
my clients used to decorate their stalls I used to give them
advices for decorating their stalls and highlighting their
logos. My cousin Krunal noticed my keen observing skill and
suggested me that I should do something in brand designing
and from there this idea came up, and so did the Bharkha’s
Brand Clinic. We already had a good database of 14,000 people
from Barkha’s exhibits, we just e-mailed all of them and the
response was phenomenal which is showing till today as our
logos are selling really well.
Work flow of designing a logo?
We have a very precise system that we follow in
designing a logo. We have a questionnaire for our clients
wherein they tell us their requirements and the information
that we need in the process of designing a client’s logo.
There is a very intense research work done by us. We go in
the opposite direction in the flow. First the research team is
activated and that team study’s about the client’s product,

Graff ti Art
i
G
raffiti is a form art, through which graphics or
illustrations are exhibited to vast audience. Graffiti is
no rocket science but a simple typography or graphical
representation of a social message. This message can be
related to viewer’s benefit or a threatening warning. Graffiti
runs deep down in the history. Other meaning of graffiti is
inscriptions, so the cave painting done by our ancestors can
be called graffiti. This particular word describes the vandals’
genre of panting and used widely during Roman times. Well
that was the past, now-a-days graffiti is major medium to
communicate with people as it is done on the walls of streets
and put to good use.
Graffiti had a bold use during World-WarII and one
illustration with a saying ‘Kilroy was here’ was widespread
throughout the world. This illustration was used by American
troops to spread fear in rivals and security among fellow
militants. Modern style graffiti had a strong resemblance
with hip-hop culture of dance form. Graffiti spread across
through the world was because of music and dance forms. The
bands of hip-hop culture used graffiti in their music videos
and promotions while they were on tour across the country
and later across the globe. Gradually this art started to get
showcased in full length feature films representing of what
is going in young hip-hop culture. Graffiti is done or rather
painted by using different colour combinations of aerosol cans
filled with paint and high-pressure. As the art spread and took
a mainstream to get showcased in maximum movies, which in
turn evolved in making stencil graffiti.
Commercialization with the help of graffiti was
considered as vandalism and was fined back then. IBM was
one such company which was fined for their advertisement
campaign which showcased people making some illustrations.
If a particular advertisement campaign or any art-work
involving graffiti work for public displays would require proper
legal permission and notices from the law as implied. With the
rise of gaming era, many games were designed having graffiti
as the game plots. There were couple of games which were
only based on graffiti. Their game stories would involve either
clean the city streets or catch the thieves or be the thief
and spoil the city streets. These particular games were a hit
amongst the young mind as it gave them a platform and an
opportunity to get up close and personal to graffiti as an art.
Graffiti can be used for many reasons despite of marking the
territories or spreading awareness. Graffiti designs in Brazil
is considered to be one of the creative centres for graffiti.
Apparently, the streets boast a unique and particularly rich
graffiti scene. Use of graffiti art should be done to enlighten
the good and bring out the best rather than using it for radical
and political comments. Advertising with this art is waste of
energy and wall, wonder can be created but blunders should
be avoided. In 2012, Tata Memorial held a wall painting
advertisement campaign where the artists were none other
than students and hobbyists, exploring and expanding
their creativity. I liked one thing about it that they
GRAFFITI
Vandalism or an art?
gave freedom and liberty to do whatever
possible and not restrict to making a
particular mascot with an idea.
Only 2 types of graffiti appeal to me the
most, one having text and written in some
jazzy or funk style and other with some
illustration which requires brains
to decode the concept or story
behind it. Graffiti for desigers are
a boon to learn the fundamental
of playing with colours. The
graffiti artist start with bold
lines and then spray bold
bright colours. If you stand
close to the wall you will
see only colours but once you
start getting far from the wall
that the part where a true viewer
would get goosebumps and wonder
how did he do that. It take practise
with dedication and imagination.
The way graffiti is treated as a
vandalism crime is correct. If
it is not given limitations by
law it can be misused. But
law should not pose
any problem if the
persmissions are
been
taken
for making
graffiti
art if being
used
for
betterment.

Magazine design workshop
Arena Andheri organized a magazine design workshop which was
conducted by Miss. Tanvi Vasani. The workshop was held to make the students
understand what goes into making the magazine right from its layout to the final
designing and compiling. Miss. Tanvi concentrated primarily on making the students
know the basics of magazine layout, placement of text and making the appropriate
and appealing design. After the session, the students who attended were made to
design a magazine of their own with proper layouts. The magazines made by the
students were later checked by Tanvi mam and also the doubts of the students
were resolved.
Cartoonics workshop
A cartoonics workshop was held in Arena Andheri which was conducted
by Mr.Rajiv Maniar. The sole purpose of this workshop was conducted to encourage
the students to draw characters and depict any social message through them.
In the workshop, Rajiv sir made the students understand the basics of drawing
characters from basic shapes. Sir also showed the students difference between
human, fantasy and cartoonic characters. Sir himself sketched out different
