UNIVERSAL PICTURES invites you to a private downtown screening of IT’S COMPLICATED written and directed by Nancy Meyers starring Meryl Streep Steve Martin Alec Baldwin John Krasinski Lake Bell Hunter Parrish Zoe Kazan Caitlin Fitzgerald Thursday, December 10th, 2009 7:30pm - Screening Chelsea Cinema 9 260 West 23rd Street (between 7th & 8th Avenues) 9:30pm - Party Gramercy Park Hotel - Rooftop 2 Lexington Avenue (between 21st and 22nd Streets) Featuring DJs Cassie Coane and Harley Viera-Newton [email protected] or 212-935-6700 this invitation is non-transferable Season’s Greetings and Garderobes ―It‘s complicated‖ may be this holiday season‘s best catchphrase. It is complicated. With all the questions, lists, parties, and obligations, there are certain events, fortunately, that offer a little respite. Take, for example, the double screenings of the film It’s Complicated. Wednesday night was the uptown version, the world premiere at the Paris Theatre with ladies like Tina Fey and Lake Bell; then, last night, the downtown version, complete with after-party at Gramercy Park Hotel. Of course, though, it wasn‘t that simple. Before heading to the GPH, we had to stop by VBH all the way up on Seventyfourth Street to celebrate Bravura! Lucia Chase and the American Ballet Theatre. The book‘s author, Chase‘s son Alex C. Ewing, came to celebrate with supporters such as Blaine Trump and Frédéric Fekkai and Shirin von Wulffen. Downstairs in the VBH (once a bank vault!) we found not only Valentina dresses that had once belonged to Lucia but also her grandchildren, Caroline and Sandy. ―She lied about her age. No one knew how old she was,‖ said Sandy. Lucia was 43 when she became codirector of the ABT and continued as a principal dancer well into her 60s. Caroline shared another secret: She‘s worn the very same dresses on display—quite the grandmother‘s closet to raid! Then, it was onto the GPH, where It’s Complicated’s Zoe Kazan told us about her own closets. She has five in her new place. ―There were stars in my eyes, and he was like ‗This is it,‘ ‖ she said of her boyfriend‘s reaction to her wardrobe discovery mid–apartment hunt. ―He has four shirts—and the rest is mine.‖ Having to share would be so much more complicated Emily Blunt & Jon Krasinski, You‟re The Cutest Couple! And You Both Screened Your Fab Movies On The Same Night! Emily Blunt and John Krasinski have so much to celebrate! They are engaged to be married, and both have amazing movies hitting theaters! Emily and John‘s flicks were each shown during (separate) special screenings on Dec. 10 in NYC. Universal Pictures screened John‘s It’s Complicated — a hilarious romantic comedy starring Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin — at The Chelsea Cinema 9. And a few blocks away, Grand Marnier & The New Yorker hosted the The Cinema Society screening of Emily‘s Young Victoria — a Queen Victoria biopic — at Regal Cinemas Union Square. Young Victoria producer, Martin Scorsese, came out to support Emily, as did Kelly Bensimon, Michael Stipe, Rachel Roy, Natalie Morales, Olivia Palermo, Chris Noth, Martha Stewart and model Jessica White. And a even though John didn‘t show up to his screening (he and Emily went to his premiere on Dec. 9) a slew of other celebs — including It’s Complicated stars Hunter Parrish, Zoe Kazan, and Caitlin Fitzgerald — came out for the flick. Congrats to you Emily and John. Both movies are a ―Must See!‖ — Corynne Steindler & Chloe Melas Hunter Parrish, You Have TWO Famous On-Screen Moms! Hottie Hunter Parrish has the most famous ―mom‖ in Hollywood! Not only is he Silas, the older son of Mary-Louise Parker‘s character Nancy Botwin, on Showtime hit Weeds … but he‘s Meryl Streep‘s son, too! In It’s Complicated, Hunter plays Luke Adler, the lovable party boy son of Jane & Jake Adler (played by Meryl and Alec Baldwin) and at the Universal Studios screening of the the film at Chelsea Cinema on Dec. 10, Hunter told HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY how he feels about his on-screen moms. ―Jane Adler is a fantastic mother,‖ Hunter gushed of Meryl‘s character. Which is a huge change from Mary-Louise on Weeds! ‖Nancy Botwin forgets to be a mother quite a bit. I don‘t know who I would pick [to be my mom], but if there were an award the majority would pick Jane Adler as the best mom. As for playing a totally new character, Hunter tells us ―Silas and Luke are completely different. One is sort of a rebel, kind of crazy kid in Weeds with a lot of problems and a dysfunctional family. The other is a privileged, sweet kid that lives in Santa Barbara.‖ Well, Hunter, whether you‘re playing a dysfunctional rebel or a sweet privileged child, we hope we keep seeing a lot more of you! GUEST OF A GUEST “It’s Complicated” Private Screening In Chelsea Thursday night saw a private screening of ―It‘s Complicated‖ at the Chelsea Cinema 9 - but where was Jack Donaghy/Alec Baldwin?! [Photo by Scott Morgan for PMc]. Ok ok, so he attended the premiere the night before at the Paris Theater (click here to read our coverage of the event!) but everyone needs more Alec Baldwin in their life. ―It‘s Complicated‖ is a film for the ages. Or, well, at least for those who are middle-aged, fans of Meryl Streep‘s brilliant acting or, more importantly, lovers of Alec Baldwin! And who hasn‘t fallen for this man post-30 Rock reinvention? As the character Jack Donaghy, millions have swooned for the charmingly charismatic yet power-hungry t.v. exec. And it seemed last night that Hollywood agreed as Mark Indelicato, Elisabeth Moss, Dean Winters and Joshua Bell came out to see the film and support the talented cast and crew. The night continued at the afterparty, where Justin Kirk, Lake Bell, Jeff Probst and Lauren Remington Platt braved the cold atop the Gramercy Park Hotel Private Roof Club. Mark Indelicato Lindsay Ellingson Elisabeth Moss Zoe Kazan Dylan Lauren Dean Winters, Kelly Hulbert Kate Schelter Chrishell Stause Catlin Fitzgerald Hunter Parrish Joshua Bell Cameron Richardson Jennifer Missoni Gequeline ?, Carlos Miele Jeff Probst Lake Bell Justin Kirk Doug Porter, Tom Baer, Allison Williams, Mattie Siegal, Peggy Siegal Adrienne Stillman, Jessica Chalkley Kate Furst, Jake Furst Hunter Parrish, Hallie Meyers-Shyer, Kate Brian A Second 'It's Complicated' Night Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin may have taken the night off, but that didn't stop the younger cast members of Nancy Meyers' "It's Complicated" from gathering on the rooftop on the Gramercy Park Hotel on Thursday night to celebrate the film's release for the second night in a row. Lake Bell, Zoe Kazan, Hunter Parrish and Caitlin Fitzgerald sipped Champagne and mingled with other fresh-faced guests while DJs Harley Viera Newton and Cassie Coane manned the turntables. Perhaps not surprisingly, the brains behind the fete was Meyers' 22-year-old daughter, Hallie Meyers-Shyer. "I said 'Mom, I want a downtown screening and, all of a sudden, I was being cc'ed on all of these e-mails," Myers-Shyer said with a laugh. Star Potential Up-and-Coming Actresses Are the Toast of the Town at a Pair of New York Screenings All eyes were on Emily Blunt last night at the Cinema Society screening of The Young Victoria. Her turn as the English monarch may be the, er, crowning achievement in the actress' career to date; if you ask us, she's an Oscar contender. "I don't feel like I had a burning ambition to play the Queen of England," Blunt said at the after-party at Norwood, adding that she did feel a deep sympathy for Victoria and her royal struggles. "She learned not to mistake stubbornness for strength, and I learned about the humanity of that world." Blunt was the only cast member making the rounds, but she found a friend in Michael Stipe when he cozied up to her on the couch. Meanwhile, a youthful crowd flocked to the second kickoff screening of the midlife comedy It's Complicated. (Co-stars Alec Baldwin and Meryl Streep had turned out for the uptown premiere the night before.) "This is the kid's premiere—the cool one," explained actress Lake Bell, who plays the "misunderstood predator" for whom Baldwin has left Streep in the film. Zoe Kazan was quick to point out how much she had learned from her elders during filming. "The goal is not to be Meryl Streep—the goal is to be able to work like Meryl works," theorized Kazan, who plays the couple's middle daughter in the film. "It looks like magic, but it's not." PartyLines Special Screening of „It‟s Complicated‟ Chelsea Cinemas, and Gramercy Park Hotel Rooftop. December 10, 2009. By Mike Vilensky What‟s your reaction to the film getting an R rating? ―I hope that it‘s known that it‘s as soft an R as you can get. To equate us with Saw 4 is odd.‖ —Nancy Meyers, Director Meryl Streep and Steve Martin both smoke weed in the movie. Have you ever seen your mom, Nancy Meyers, do it? ―You know what? I‘ve tried. She won‘t give. She will not smoke weed.‖ —Hallie Meyers-Shyer Is it surprising that the film got an R rating for the one scene involving marijuana? ―Highly surprising. I don‘t think it‘s a mystery that parents are smoking weed all over the country.‖ —Lake Bell Did you have tips for your fellow actors on how to act high? ―No, I actually learned some. You‘d think after five years [on Weeds] I would be the professional.‖ —Hunter Parrish Do you feel pressure when you act with Tina Fey on 30 Rock? ―No, because I play her ex-love interest and literally the world‘s biggest retard.‖ —Dean Winters If there were going to be a Survivor: New York, what would you have the cast do? ―They could build their careers on the backs of others. If you can make it in New York City, as they say, you can probably make it on Survivor.‖ —Jeff Probst Are you and Paul Dano a Brooklyn power couple? ―I really hope not. It‘s a terrible label! I don‘t think anyone wants to be a Brooklyn power couple.‖ —Zoe Kazan Have you ever seen your parents smoke pot? ―Yes. I‘m from Maine. There are a lot of homegrown botanicals up there. I went to Burning Man with my parents— their suggestion, not mine.‖ —Caitlin Fitzgerald Aspirations of a social climber It's Complicated How can I explain last night? It was Complicated. I needed be in two place at the same time and still make the downtown screening of "it's Complicated". This is how the night played out. The first stop was easy, the Le Sportsac holiday shopping event since I work just down the street from their shop in Soho. I love a little discount on my favorite bags and what a Christmas present they make. I waited as long as I could but missed my good friend D'Arcy from Le Sportsac as I had to run to the next event. It was the opening for an exhibit by Pablo Posada. I wasn't sure what I was in for since I am not familiar with his work. When we arrive to the gallery it was the size of a shoebox so I was not worried that I would be late for the screening as it would take just a few minutes to look at his work and enjoy a quick glass of wine. We made it to the screening in plenty of time to get a good seat and look around at who was there before the movie started. I notice some of the cast from Ugly Betty and a handful of socials and the younger stars from the cast as the lights started to dim. It was a nice way to end an evening a running around. „It‟s Complicated‟ creates a Stir. With the actual premiere being this past Wednesday, last night was a special downtown screening of Nancy Meyers‟ latest venture, “It‟s Complicated.” The film was wonderfully comedic accompanied by stellar performances by Alec Baldwin and John Krasinski, as well as the obvious Mrs. Meryl Streep. Nancy Meyers kept her same light toned premise but synched it with new age jokes and a memorable and hilarious ―high times‖ scene with Streep and Steve Martin, who played her love interest. Zoe Kazan stopped to chat on the red carpet with Scallywag sharing that in meeting Paul Dano, her current boyfriend, a couple years back at their Broadway show “Things We Want” she had to choose Dano since Peter Dinklage was taken. Kazan never ceases to present brave performances, perhaps being influenced by one of her favorite authors Vladimir Nabokov. Unfortunately John Krasinski was escorting fiancé Emily Blunt at her screening of “Young Victoria” at the Regal Union Square and was not in attendance, as previously promised. Lake Bell of the Ball Lake Bell is probably one of the most down to earth actresses around. The native New Yorker was on hand last night for the Downtown screening of her latest flick It’s Complicated, in which she stars alongside Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin and Meryl Streep. Bell mixed elegance and edge in a strapless black dress and layered necklaces from Dannijo. The actress was all smiles at the after party, which was held on the Gramercy Park Hotel rooftop. She graciously greeted guests, including Survivor’s Jeff Probst, Ugly Betty’s Mark Indelicato and Michael Urie, Cynthia Rowley, Rachel Dratch and Dylan Lauren, and danced into the morning with friends like designer Lyn Devon. It seems Bell is far from complicated! ~Nola Weinstein It‟s Complicated Private Screening and Reception Universal Pictures hosted a downtown private screening of the new Meryl Streep/Alec Baldwin vehicle “It’s Complicated” last night. Following the screening, we were spirited off by bus to a wonderful fete at the sparkling Gramercy Park Hotel Rooftop (2 Lexington Ave @ 21st) for a party where dinner and Red Bull infused cocktails were served. In attendance for the evening were the movie‘s writer/director Nancy Meyers, cast members Lake Bell, Hunter Parrish, Zoe Kaplan, and Caitlin Fitzgerald, and executive producer Suzanne Farwell. I also spied Survivor host Jeff Probst and the two lovely guys from “Ugly Betty”, Michael Urie and Mark Indelicato. Had a wonderful hoot and a holla with the riotous Rachel Dratch, formerly of SNL she is set to appear in a full slate of comedies in 2010. We were having a juicy dish about the media lunacy surrounding, the formerly reclusive, Tiger Woods. I was particularly flattered that I could crack her up and that she told me I was funny, as she is comic genius! Last Thursday night at the Chelsea Cinema 9, there was a private screening for ―It‘s Complicated,‖ the new film by writer/director/producer Nancy Meyers. Cast members who attended were Lake Bell, Hunter Parrish, Zoe Kazan and Caitlin Fitzgerald along with executive producer Suzanne Farwell. Also attending: including Joshua Bell, Alexis Bledel, Rachel Dratch, Lindsay Ellingson, Mark Indelicato, Justin Kirk, Dylan Lauren, David Lauren and Lauren Bush, Amy Lemons, Hallie Meyers-Shyer, Carlos Miele, Jennifer Missoni, Bonnie Morrison, Elisabeth Moss, Lauren Remington Platt, Jeff Probst, Cameron Richardson, Cynthia Rowley, Kelly Rutherford, Chrishell Stause, Michael Urie, Harley Viera Newton, Dean Winter. Big hit with the audience! There was an after-party at the Gramercy Park Hotel Rooftop featuring DJs Cassie Coane and Harley Viera-Newton. After having been divorced more than a decade, during which time Mr Adler gains a new wife (Lake Bell), the Adler‘s end up having a steamy affair with each other! Add 3 adult children, 1 step child and 1 suitor (Steve Martin) to the mix and you have a recipe for complexity that will surely bring on the guffaws and giggles. Though the comedy of life is central in this movie it is not without a conscience. The story does not shy away or gloss over the cost of this mad affair, by simply ignoring the complications that are bound to occur. Issues are tackled head on with a humor and wit we‘ve all come to recognize in writer/director Nancy Meyer‘s work. Meyer‘s films include: Something‘s Gotta Give, The Holiday and Father of the Bride all of which feature strong female leads and make humor from the oddest circumstances, without resorting to fart jokes and profanity. It‘s Complicated as with most of Meyer‘s films bring issues such as aging body image and infidelity to the forefront with so much realness and compassion its hard not to find yourself among the characters she creates. The all-star cast gave brilliant performances all the way through. Alec Baldwin‘s brazenly sexy and over confident Jake was the perfect match for Meryl‘s insecure and overly cautious Jane. Their scenes together were full of chemistry and provided enough heat to keep the movie going. Steve Martin‘s bumbling suitor brought some good laughs and tenderness to the film. From belly laughs to tender moments there‘s never a dull scene. For the low-brow set there‘s even a joint smoking scene that is sure to get some laughs out of even the most discerning viewer. With it‘s high drama, hilarity and heart, ―It‘s complicated‖ is simply entertaining. IT‟S COMPLICATED opens in theaters on Friday, December 25, 2009. ***Today the film received three Golden Globe nominations, including Best Picture (Comedy/Musical)
