Dave’s Garden (www.davesgarden.com - $15) and GardenWeb (www.gardenweb.
com - free) are two very fine Internet sites with tons of information and scores of
forums to connect you with gardeners from all over the world including central
Ohio. Highly recommended.
IN ONE YEAR AND OUT THE OTHER
2013 was a pretty good year, personally speaking. Hope yours was also. Here’s a
few interesting tidbits from the last twelve months.
In the obituary column, we are sad to report that Chuck Foley, the inventor of the
popular game, Twister, passed away at age 82. It was his dying wish that the handles
of his coffin be painted different colors and the pallbearers had to spin to see which
handle to grab, resulting in many strange and precarious positions. That crazy Chuck!
Have you noticed lately that a lot of women, especially morning TV personalities,
have been wearing dresses with large blocks of black and another solid color? Is it just
me, or do they look like they just stepped off the bridge of the Starship Enterprise?
There’s been a lot of talk this past year about the Canadian Tarzans. Apparently
a lot of people are upset about this and I don’t blame them. Everyone knows that
all the Tarzans have been American, from Johnny
Weismüller to Ron Ely. Okay, maybe there was that
Frenchman Christopher Lambert later on, but definitely
no Canadians. I tried to talk about the Tarzans with my
kids but they just tell me it’s time to get a hearing aid.
Kids, what do they know?! And don’t get me started on all
the school problems caused by the Gum Lobby. Have you
looked under those desks?
The recent Winter Olympics were pretty exciting and
featured the oldest Gold Medal winner ever in skiing,
Bodie Miller, at age thirty-eight. Ooh, thirty-eight, that’s
really old. I have socks older than that.
Speaking of the Olympics, poor Bob Costas was
stricken with a raging case of conjunctivitis. A similar
thing once happened to Frank Sinatra. For about a three
week period in 1962, he was known as Ol’ Pink Eyes.
Justin Bieber (a Canadian, no less) was in the news again for making a fool of
himself, as was singer Miley Cyrus. There is much speculation by show biz insiders
that they are indeed the same person. They are both about the same size, same age,
same nut job personality, have basically the same face, and no one can ever remember
seeing them in the same room together. At least that’s what I heard on Abscess
Hollywood.
In a weird carjacking incident in South Africa, three gun-toting men jumped into
a car driven by a young woman who then panicked and drove her car backwards,
smashing into a brick wall, which just happened to be filled with bees’ nests. This did
not amuse the bees, who then proceeded to fly into the car and attack the bad guys.
They were last seen running down the road screaming and waving their arms wildly
about their heads. All the bees were given little tiny Certificates of Commendation.
This year’s new plants are pretty darn cool, if I do say so myself. Perennials include
a true perennial everblooming Digitalis called ‘Polka Dot Princess’. The flowers are
sterile which results in a very long blooming season and no pesky seedlings. There are
two new Dianthus, the sweet smelling ‘Scent First Sugar Plum’ and ‘Scent First Coral
Reef’. Again, all summer bloom. For new annuals we have a couple dwarf kangaroo
paws, Anigozanthos ‘JoeJoe Orange’ and ‘JoeJoe Yellow’. There is a wonderfully
named Caladium, ‘Frog in a Blender’ and much buzz about the annual foxglove,
Digiplexis ‘Illumination Rose’. New veggies feature the grafted tomatoes - heirloom
varieties grafted on a very hardy, disease resistant root stock.
This winter has been a nasty one for sure but it has to end sometime and spring will
arrive sooner or later. We’ll be ready for you when it does, count on that.

Last year’s elections resulted in copious amounts of gaseous emissions but it was
nowhere near the output from our big yellow dog. Please, someone help us!

Our radio ads, our email newsletter, this catalog, and even our greenhouse music are
all filled with subliminal messages designed to force you to submit to our will. You
will buy plants until your car is full. You will tell all your friends about us. You will
think we look like movie stars. Just kidding! We really don’t do that……..or do we?
APPARITION STATEMENT
Apparition is a fancy word for ghost. That reminds me of the couple who had a ‘Sixth
Sense’ open marriage. They were both free to see dead people.

WHAT IS THIS?
What is this thing you’re reading right now? We’ve struggled for years for the right
term for our catalog. It’s not actually a catalog, having no prices and no descriptions.
It’s too large for a pamphlet. Would that make it a pamph? Is it a brochure...not
sure. We could call it a roster but that could foster a sports allusion. If we called it a
list we would miss the gist of what it’s all about. Printed matter sounds strange and
horticultural compendium is way too stuffy. A booklet implies that it’s almost a book
which in turn implies literature, which this certainly is not. I guess we’ll just have to
call this ‘The Papery Thing with the Words and Stuff’. That’s got a nice ring to it.

Hey, wait a minute. These two lists are almost the same. The big difference is you
guys get the best parking spaces.
PRICES
There are no prices in this catalog. That’s because we don’t know what they are yet.
Too many factors are yet to be determined in our price making process, not the least
of which is the price of oil. How does that affect flowers? Most of our pots and flats
are made of plastic, which is made from oil. Many of our starter plants are shipped
from points across the nation requiring jet fuel, diesel and gasoline, although we make
every effort to buy locally or regionally. With the price of oil high and going up and
down, it’s just too hard to set a price at printing time (late February/early March). We
will make every effort to keep things within reason and you can be assured that our
prices will be very fair while our quality will remain high. We certainly are not out
to gouge anyone but we do need to make a profit to stay in business. Otherwise we’d
have to go out and get real jobs.

all depends on whether Dave’s allergies
are acting up. If they are, then another

‘FEED ME, SEYMOUR’
In April, May and June we get really
hungry and none of us have time to bake
so we’re willing to trade food for flowers.
Oddly enough, we call this the ‘Food For
Flowers’ program. We will gladly issue
you $10 in Baker Bucks for one of the
following: a cake, a pie, 3 dozen cookies,
or a coffee cake. Additionally, food that is
actually healthful and non-fattening will
be accepted if it doesn’t require heat or
cold to keep it that way. Finger food would
be helpful. All items must be homemade
and you must call for a sign-up date.
Please limit your offerings to no more than
twice per month to be fair to all. Also,
if possible, we would love to have the
recipe. We can’t tell you how much joy
this brings us even though we have to go
through withdrawal in July.

crazy little black dog who
used to love greeting everyone. Now
she’s ancient - going on 15 - and she’s
very creaky, sleeps a lot, and refuses to
eat the dry crap. She still loves to get in
the car and ride to the greenhouse where
she spends most of her time napping in
the office. She had to have her spleen
removed last fall and we
thought we would lose her,
but she recovered nicely.
And then there’s the golden
retriever/hound dog mix by
the name of Daisy. She’s 11. She doesn’t
see very well so she barks at moving
shapes, but once she realizes you’re not
here to do great harm, she’s just fine.
She is very gentle but somewhat leery of
strange men. Then again, who isn’t.

Wilfred would stike again. Try as he

in the house. Thelma would yell at him
like crazy, but it saved a lot in new boot
costs, so it was worth it. Mort would just

Dave Morris is responsible for our
enormous collection of Begonias. Years
ago, he started collecting begonias,
and because he’s incapable of making a
decision, he just kept every one he came
across. As a result, we have way too many,
but it’s a collection admired by many a
begonia afficianado. We’ve tried thinning
it out a bit, and yet new ones keep

THOSE WACKY COLEUS
Coleus are the Hawaiian shirts of the
plant world. They are those gaudy little
plants with the multicolored leaves
that you remember from visiting your
grandmother’s house and they seem to
come in and out of favor. Currently they
are popular, mostly because they can be
used just about anywhere and provide an
anchor of color and/or texture in beds
and containers. They shine as either
the stars or the supporting players in
garden combos. Several years ago they
changed the name to Solenostemon, and
just recently to Plectranthus, but in a
blatant act of taxonomic defiance, we
refuse to call them anything but Coleus.
Our collection of named varieties is far
beyond the bounds of sanity at about 150,
give or take 20 or 30. The sad thing is,
people keep bringing us new ones. Even
sadder is the fact that we keep coming
up with new ones of our own. Recently,
a fun new flower brand, Hort Couture,
picked several of our varieties to feature
in their new line of coleus distributed
nationally. This year, Stained Glassworks,
another national brand, chose our ‘Stu
Jr.’ to add to its line. They have renamed
it ‘Raspberry Tart’. And if ya think that’s
somethin’, how about this. Baker’s Acres
is featured in the book by Ray Rogers,
‘Coleus - Rainbow Foliage for Containers
and Gardens’, available at fine bookstores
everywhere. We think we’re pretty hotsytotsy now.

It is always spectacularly amusing. Since
most of our customers are of the fairer
sex, the bathroom designs have always
been geared that way. This time, however,
we decided to give the guys a little love.
Hence, ‘The Man Cave’, a celebration
of guy paraphernalia. But don’t just

time it was located behind Bill Lorimer’s
garage under his huge pile of old tires
and, although he claims innocence, it
is well known that Bill and Roger had a
particularly strong dislike for each other.
Roger’s widow, Bertha, is relieved to have
the bench back in its proper place.

Nick Baker has taken a real liking to the
succulents. These are the different families
of plants that are mostly native to the
drier regions of the world. They have very
fleshy foliage that comes in a variety of
colors and interesting shapes, sometimes
with thorns, sometimes with gorgeous
flowers. As a toddler, Nick fell into a bowl
of cactus...kinda like Peter Parker getting
bitten by a radioactive spider, but as far as
we know, Nick has no superpowers.

RADIO ADS
We advertise on 610 WTVN’s “In the Garden with Ron Wilson”, a two-hour callin gardening program that airs Saturdays at 10 am. Ron is very entertaining and
dispenses a great amount of sound horticultural advice. Our ads can also be heard at
various other times on WODC 93.3 (FM). We also do TV spots on WCMH NBC4 and,
new this year, on WBNS Channel 10. Be sure to look for them. The radio spots are
‘oddly different’, much like the pair that appears in them: Chris Baker as himself and
buddy Chris Calvin as ‘Cal, The Voice of Baker’s Acres’. The theme song was written
and produced by Mr. Baker and performed by his musical cronies, aka The Baker’s
Acres Orchestra and Chorus. For the sake of their professional careers they have
asked not to be identified. If you were unfortunate enough to hear the theme song
previously, it is probably still playing over and over in your head until, desperate for
relief, you’ve resorted to self-medication.
WEB SITE, NEWSLETTER & FACEBOOK
Many of you web-surfer-type folks have asked if we have a website. As they say in
technological Internet jargon…yes, we do. The site has received a brand new facelift
and went live in March of 2014. Many thanks to the good folks at Ipso Web Design in
Akron for all their hard work in the redesign. The new site is much easier to navigate
and has a lot more information. In fact, if you want to download this catalog in PDF
form, there is a button to click. We will also announce any special events, write a blog,
share special information and, hopefully, offer a live inventory of plants. Since we
have discontinued mailing catalogs and sale postcards due to the high cost of postage,
we have started an Email Newsletter, to be sent seven or eight times a year to keep
you abreast of the latest happenings here at the Acres. To sign up, go to the contact

We like to reward our frequent flower buyers. If you’re here a lot, we have a program
for you. Here’s the deal: you can purchase a 10% off, non-transferable card from us for
$50. This may be used all of 2014 for any purchase. Simply present it to the cashier
when checking out. It should be a simple way to save some money if you spend a lot of
it here at the Acres.
SUMMER BREAK
Last year, in an effort to make sense out of the S-L-O-W summer garden center
business in July and August, we closed during the week from the end of July until the
end of August, but remained open on weekends. This year, we’re staying open all the
time - probably. It just gets too confusing to switch hours every month. Your best bet
is to check the website or the Facebook page in case we make any changes. Or you can
call us. We’ll also post summer hours in the Email newsletter.
END OF SEASON
We usually end our season on the first Sunday in October, but we play it by ear and
sometimes stay open longer, depending on the weather. The first Sunday was always
our potluck but we have changed it to charity Sunday. A portion of your purchase goes
to your choice of several different organizations.

BUS TOURS
We seem to have become a destination for garden clubs, horticulture classes, Master
Gardener groups and other various gardening gangs. If your group would like a tour,
just call us to set up a time (please, no weekends in May). There are several good
restaurants in nearby Granville if you’re looking to add lunch to the trip. We can
handle anything from a van full to a busload or two so bring ‘em on.
OUR GUARANTEE
In a perfect world everything that you buy here would be …well…perfect, but we all
know imperfection is part of our normal lives. Around here we strive for perfection,
but if that less than perfect thing happens, here are our guarantees and conditions.
• All plants and all hardgoods are guaranteed and may be returned in resaleable
condition, for store credit, exchange, or cash refund, for up to five days. Resaleable
condition is defined as growing in the original healthy state, in the original container,
and with the original tags or packaging.
• Perennials are guaranteed from time of purchase until October 15th, with receipt,
for store credit only. Winter wetness is usually the culprit in perennial failure and is
beyond our control.
• Outdoor trees and shrubs are guaranteed for one year from time of purchase, with
receipt, for store credit only. This tree and shrub guarantee may be waived at the time
of purchase by the customer in exchange for 10% off the purchase price.
• Any plant that leaves our greenhouse with a disease, insect problem or an incorrect
tag may be returned with no questions asked. Unconditionally.
• This guarantee does not cover death or damage caused by Mother Nature such as
flooding, winds, frost, drought, rabbit and deer browsing, locusts, stampedes, or giant
armadillos. We reserve the right to void any guarantee due to CUSTOMER NEGLECT
or ABUSE. How can we logically be held responsible for something over which we
have no control? Replacement plants are not guaranteed. All sale items are final for
anything 50 percent off or more and are not guaranteed.

SMALL WORLD
Fairy Gardens, Terrariums and Garden Railways are very popular right now and we
offer many smaller plants and accessories for these fun ways to garden.
ORGANICS
You want organic? We’ve got organic. We now offer organic lawn, flower and
vegetable fertilizers exclusively. We will try to offer beneficial ladybugs and praying
mantis eggs, but these are sometimes hard to obtain. Check with us. New this year,
all our vegetables and herbs will be fed with organic fertilizer. They are never sprayed
with chemicals. We can’t say that they are Certified Organic - that certification is very
costly and hard to obtain - but we do make every effort to grow them in a responsible
and organic way.

NOTES
These ‘Notes’ pages are common sights in catalogs because of the way catalogs are
constructed - in units of four pages. If you don’t have enough material to fill exactly
four pages, people label the empty pages as ‘Notes’ pages. We’ve never been clear on
what kind of notes they mean. Are we supposed to take notes on a lecture or slide
presentation (who can see, the lights are so low)? Are we supposed to rip the pages
out and send them as thank you notes or put notes on the refrigerator (Wendell,
we’re out of beer again. And get some milk and bread while you’re out). Perhaps it’s
