ènes diffusion is the first Selection Company to have developed a genomic evaluation
future
of the “Hoof Health” characteristics. Its economic impact in the farms cannot be
avoided. This evaluation is the result of a 3 year project driven by the Dutch University
of Wageningen.
2 new Hoof Health predictors have since seen the light: Resistance to Lesions and Hoof
Robustness. In the meantime, a new index called GD Merit has been
developed and includes Hoof Health in its genetic selection.

Resistance to Lesio
The predictor entitled «Resistance to Hoof lesions» (RL)
combines genetic evaluation of various diseases and injuries that
could impact the Hoof of dairy cows. This is an index which includes
the synthesis of resistance to sole ulcers (50%), interdigital dermatitis
(25%), sole haemorrhages (20%), and interdigital hyperplasia (5%).
The rating of this criterion is between 0 and 10. A number higher than
5 indicates the animal will be more resistant to lesions.

Genes Diffusion has also implemented an evaluation of the
GD Merit is a new synthetic index that, like the ISU, gathers major traits for Production, functional Type and Health traits as well as the new
Hoof Health predictors. It is marked out by the weight given to traits with an important economic
«Robustness of the Hoof» (RP). It characterizes
the genetic robustness of animals in relation to their need
impact in dairy farms.
