What a wonderful day of music,
fun, food and fellowship we had
Sunday, December 8th, 2013 with
the No Shame Band once again
returning to the ACH gym for another private concert. Festivities
began at 2pm lasting until 4pm;
pizza, dancing, fun and games
and a fantastic gift from the
band of a professional grade
Karaoke Machine, CD’s and Flatscreen T.V.
Such special friends!
Immediately followed by Russ, Kat and Craig rushing Uptown Lexington to High Rock Outfitters where another concert was preparing to “crank-up”.
Davis Tucker and Shannon Gregg hosted the Premier Benefit Concert in memory of
their son, Joey Tucker, a local musician/ songwriter. The evening included numerous
local musicians taking to the stage and performing tunes and even some of Joey’s
own favorites. The sales from Joey’s newly released CD helped in raising money for
the benefit of ACH and will continue to bring in financial support to ACH in his memory until all CD’s are sold! The entire day truly expressed how special the community
is in support to American Children’s Home!

Letter from the President:
Two of life’s challenges are embracing and managing change. Although often closely related, each of these challenges can sometimes require a very different skill set in order to
reach a resolution. Recently the staff at the American Children’s Home has had to and
continues to embrace and manage a variety of changes within our agency. As many of
you know, the American Children’ Home lost one of its own late last year. Gene Duckworth passed away on September 20, 2013. Gene served in the role of Vice President of
Business Affairs for over 26 years. His dedication and service are now part of the fabric
that has sustained this organization since it opened in 1924. Later in 2013, Joan Wood
retired after 32 years of employment at the Home. Joan was an administrative assistant in
the Development Department and penned countless letters and thank you cards during
her tenure. Gene Duckworth’s legacy and Joan Wood’s work will be missed by all of us.
The reality of these events forced many of us to navigate the complexities of change.
Some of the changes were a result of present staff members moving into different roles.
These changes required those individuals to view the organization from an entirely new
perspective. Some additional changes occurred when folks from other agencies filled vacancies caused by the internal shifts of responsibility. These individuals not only had to
adjust to a new work environment and learn the history of the agency, they also had to
discover and develop their place in the success of our future. As a point of personal perspective, I could not be more proud of these individuals and of their progress.
These and other related changes caused us all to take a closer look at ourselves, our responsibilities and our purpose. The end result of this time of reflection and transformation was a reaffirmation that our mission to serve children is a worthwhile endeavor and
therefore we are more resolved to deliver our services at a higher level. Also, as part of
this process, we were reminded and became very mindful of the great partners that support us in this mission. We gained a deeper appreciation for the partners that were and
are here to help us manage change. We became more cognizant and thankful for the
partners who send messages of encouragement to us. And, we are more indebted to the
partners who give so generously of their resources to ensure that these young people are
given an opportunity to succeed in life. We all realize that change is not always welcomed, but in our latest experience it has been made more manageable by folks like
you. I speak for all of the staff when I say that we are humbled by your support and honored that you would allow us to carry out this most important work.
Russ Gobble, Ed.D

Our Volunteers
Our Volunteers provide activities, events, supplies, and
the funds needed for everyday expenses from clothing,
transportation to utilities. This gives our children a chance
to be children. This helps us provide a safe and loving
home and gives these children stability and trust to pursue
their dreams and goals. Thank you for all you do to help
heal our children every day.

WE NEED FOSTER PARENTS!
The American Children’s Home is actively recruiting
potential foster parents for our traditional foster care
program. We are seeking prospective foster parents
from Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Guilford, Randolph,
and Rowan counties. There is a great need for foster
parents due to the growing number of referrals for
placements in foster care. Referrals for placements in
foster homes come from county Department of Social Services (DSS) agencies across the state and can
be for boys or girls ages birth through eighteen.
Prospective foster parents participate in thirty hours
10
of pre-service training, CPR and First Aid training,
complete background checks, and a Mutual Home
Assessment. Foster Care Social Workers Allan
Bouchard and Julie Evans will host an Informational
Meeting on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 6:00 PM at
American Children’s Home. If you or
someone you know has an interest in
opening your heart and your home
to a child or children in need, please
contact a Foster Care Social Worker
at 336-357-7126.

The American Tour
Bike Ride
5 Years and Counting!
Team ACH Ride Across North Carolina
A fully supported family event to assist
The American Children’s Home, Lexington, NC
“Building a Better American”
Despite the pouring rain, on the morning of August
17th, riders gathered at American Children’s Home to
begin their 10 mile, 30 mile or 55 mile biking route
around High Rock Lake and Southern Davidson
County. Special thanks go to Lexington Council #21 –
JOUAM for hosting rest stops along the course, Don
Juan’s Mexican Restaurant for providing lunch for the
Riders and volunteers. Walmart of Lexington and Walmart #2472 of Winston-Salem were the Rest Stop
Sponsors.
We’re also grateful again for Davidson County Sheriff’s Office for providing traffic control and Southmont
VFD for serving Rest Stops Sites.
For the fifth year, Team ACH rode their bikes across
North Carolina over a seven day period in rain, wind
and sunshine! From the Mountains to the Coast!
Riding approximately 70 miles daily, the team covered over 500 miles, camped in tents overnight while
raising awareness and money for American Children’s
Home. This year the team raised over $12,000 to provide support for capital improvements. Each member
seeks sponsorships from friends, family members, local
businesses and organizations to raise funds which help
with renovations of the cottages that are “Home” to
our kids.
WAYS TO GIVE
Your contributions have provided a safe and loving
home and nurturing care to children for over 85
years. Help ensure that ACH is always here to provide a home for those whose own homes are no
longer safe nor loving. You can mail us a check.
Send it to American Children’s Home, P.O. Box 1288,
Lexington, NC 27293-1288. If you wish to make a
gift in honor or in memory of a loved one, please let
us know whom to notify.
You can gift to us highly appreciated stock through
your Stock Broker. You may find you avoid high capital gains taxes through this type giving.
Many people have paid up life insurance policies
which are no longer needed for the initial beneficiary.
You can list us as a beneficiary to a life insurance policy. List “American Children’s Home” as a charitable
beneficiary.
Make a Legacy Gift – Legacy gifts ensure that the
American Children’s Home will continue for many
years. You don’t need a large estate to make a
legacy gift. Many people of normal means are able
to designate a portion of their estate for a loved
charity. Your Will would name the “American Children’s Home” as the beneficiary.

Congratulations to
Samantha Heard!
Samantha will be graduating
June 14th from Central Davidson
High School. She is our longest
running resident who has seen
quite a few changes happen
here at ACH. Samantha has always been easy to make friends she has made many from school
and right here at American Children’s Home. We are so proud of
the accomplishments Samantha
has made over the past 5 years.
As the time draws near for her
graduation, plans are being
made to continue her education
that will pave the pathway for
success. Samantha’s desire is to
begin her studies in the field of
nursing and then continuing that
journey by studying medicine to
become a family physician.
Well done!

Providing nurturing care for over 85 years
Friends of the Home…
Clean Up Saturday will be held on 4/12/14
Board members,
staff and children invite our friends to
come out and help
spruce up our campus for spring.
From 9:00 am until
1:00 pm, we will be
painting, weeding,
trimming, mulching, etc. Bring your tools and come out
to join in making our children’s ‘Home’ a better place.
The event is being held in conjunction with Touching
Davidson County with Love, a project in which volunteers from area churches spend the day landscaping,
hammering, roofing and delivering smiles to the Davidson County community. We are grateful that TDCWL, in
it’s 7th year, has chosen our project again this year.
Call 357-7126 or email [email protected] for more
information.
