Making a Difference
It was a cold, snowy Friday in January and schools were
dismissing early because of the snow that had begun to fall.
The buses were loaded and the cars in line were anxiously
awaiting to pick up their children to get home. All of a sudden
one of the bus doors flew open and out stepped a frantic looking child. My thoughts were that they were sick or could not
find their siblings on the bus. He quickly turned to me and advised that he had forgotten his food bag in the classroom and
off he ran!
Your food pantry enables me to also buy
medicine and make payments on my heat
bill.
Pantry client
It is so nice to be able to come to a place
that is non-judgmental. Y’all are very welcoming and accommodating and our family
really appreciates what you do for us.
God Bless You.
Pantry client
We do not hold the buses on snowy days for many things,
A copy of a note sent to Wilkesboro

Elementary School Counselor blankets to SKW’s Project : JOY Christmas box. “A counselor reported today
that a young boy was continually being afflicted with asthma. He mentioned to the
counselor shortly before Christmas that
he was cold when he slept. Ever since he
received your wonderful blanket with his
Project: JOY Christmas box of food, he
has not had another asthma attack!
Praise the Lord!”
I have had a student ask if he could take
his sister's bag to her because he noticed
that she had not picked it up yet and he
was afraid she would forget.
I frequently have students who ask if
they can take two bags instead of just
their one bag.
As you know, high school is the age where
every kind of help from an adult is embarrassing, but we do have a few students
Project: Joy Recipient:
that truly appreciate the service and need
From a pantry client - Dear Mrs. Smith, Thank you so
much for all the good food you have sent to me [someone it more than ever. One of my students on
else picks up for her]. It really helps and I appreciate it so Monday said "If it wasn't for that food
(food we gave her from the backpack promuch.
May God Bless you this Easter and always keep you in gram) I would have had nothing to eat at
His Loving Care. Love & Prayers, Edna
all this weekend."

Please keep us in mind when you go shopping.
Spring and summer are our slowest times of year for donations. Our clients’ needs greatly increase when school is out
and children are not receiving free meals. Also, please
consider holding a food drive to help stock the shelves!

HUNGER FACTS:
The truth is hard to swallow.
The facts, though distasteful, speak for themselves. One in five North Carolina kids under 18
is hungry. For children younger than five, the
number jumps to 24 percent — the littlest ones
easily fall through the cracks without school food
programs to help sustain them. In North Carolina, where unemployment is high, the number of
hungry people is increasing drastically; ongoing
economic hardships have forced many families
to choose between grocery shopping, paying
mortgages and utility bills, buying gasoline or
going to the doctor.
Additional facts are below. Read as many as
you can stomach, then consider helping to make
childhood hunger a thing of the past.
28% of food pantries in NC have had to turn clients away for lack of food
42% of needy families have had to choose between buying food and paying for heat
35% of hungry families have had to choose between paying for food and paying for their rent/
mortgage
25% of Americans personally know someone who
was forced to choose between food and paying
bills
In 33% of hungry families in NC, at least one adult
is employed.
170,000 people in North Carolina receive emergency food assistance every week

Our Annual Statistics
Fiscal Year
July 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012
Mission
The mission of Samaritan Kitchen of Wilkes, Inc.
(SKW) is to “feed the hungry in Wilkes County”.
Methods used in accomplishing this are the Client
Choice Pantry, Project: BackPack and Project:
J.O.Y. (our Christmas meal-in-a-box program).
Who We Serve
We service all of Wilkes County.
Our Programs
Client Choice Pantry Program: The client
choice pantry opened officially in November 2006.
The pantry is open every Monday, Wednesday and
Friday by appointment. Clients are able to shop for
themselves with the guiding hand of one of our volunteers. Thus providing our clients with a sense of
dignity in asking for help. In the last fiscal year our
pantry assisted 5,631 families with by providing
288,163 pounds of food. The value of the food that
was given away equaled $478,350.58.
Project: Backpack: The BackPack program
started in December 2005. Each week children receive 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners and snacks
(and jarred peanut butter approx every 6 weeks) at a
cost per child of approximately $7.80. The School
Coordinator meets one-on-one with them and packs
the food into their backpacks for them to carry home.
During the 2011-2012 school year we were able to
assist weekly approximately 708 children who are at
-risk of going home to little or no food in the house.
We packed over 20,000 bags at a cost of $158,137.
Our goal each year is to serve at least 10% of the
children receiving free and reduced lunch at school.
We met our goal this past year.
Project: JOY (Christmas Box Program): This program started in 2004. Project: JOY enables us to provide a “meal in a box” for Christmas. This enables our
clients to easily prepare a meal for themselves and/or
their families. We started out by providing 650 boxes
to families. In the last fiscal year SKW packed over
1,000 boxes to assist families with a meal for
Christmas Day. The value per box is approximately
$12.00. Total cost of this program was $12,000.00.
Management and Staff
The Board of Directors for Samaritan Kitchen of
Wilkes is served by ten to twelve volunteer members.
SKW has 1 salaried position, 6 hourly positions, plus
a network of volunteers. The combined paid positions are the equivalent of 3.25 full-time employees.
Payroll expenses are just 7.1% of our functional expenses.
Volunteers
Last fiscal year, our priceless volunteers clocked over
7,800 hours.
Funding
Our budget was $208,857. This budget only supported 19% of our total Ministry costs which included
In-Kind values in excess of $735,000.00 resulting in a
total Ministry budget of $943,593.00.
Financial Statement
Our Form 990 financial statement is available for review by appointment and will also be on our website
in the near future.
The Wilkes County library will hold their
annual fine amnesty program from
April 15 - 20, 2013. Return your overdue
library books and pay your fine with canned
goods / non-perishable food items.
