Neighborhood Association (PNA), offers endless classes, events, and activities

Neighborhood Business Directory, produced in conjunction with Pacific Publishing
Company. This directory brings our amazing neighborhood into closer focus,
gathering in one place all the impressive resources available to us.

New Mural a Reality
It can be a magical thing when determined Phinney Ridge neighbors
get together to accomplish something. You can literally see evidence of
this when you pass by the N 63rd Street underpass located under Aurora
Avenue close to Green Lake. The underpass walls came to life at the end
of July with all kinds of animals, including humans, against a bright and
fanciful backdrop of blue and greens.

Over 1,360 votes decided the
winning design—the work of Queen
Anne artist Michiko Tanaka. Ms.
Tanaka outlined the mural and over a
hundred volunteers came together to
paint it and provide additional support.
So how did all this happen? Originally, Phinney Ridge neighbors Kerry
Fowler, Mary Lou Dickerson, Syd Phillips, Mike Veitenhans, and Ron Lewis
got together to plan for a new mural and apply to the City’s Neighborhood
Matching Grants Program. The Phinney Neighborhood Association agreed
to act as the group’s fiscal agent and the City approved the grant. Soon,
the committee expanded with additional neighbors and friends including
Pamela Jaynes, Jim Sykes, Jessica Rae Williams, and Katherine Chilcote.
The Phinney Ridge business community provided strong financial
assistance. Phinney Ridge Painting and Mallory Paint Store contributed
generously with paint and painting equipment, as well as the application of
the anti-graffiti coating. Greenwood Hardware, A-1 Piano, Phinney Market
Pub and Eatery, Starbucks, Red Mill Burgers, Ken’s Market, Sip and Ship,
Umpqua Bank, Naked City Brewery, and Top Ten Toys collected donations
and provided matching grants up to $250 each.

It’s a welcome sight. For the
past two years, the underpass has
been institutional gray after an earlier
mural became too defaced with
graffiti. The new mural comes with
an anti-graffiti coating and a 5-year
maintenance contract to quickly
handle any graffiti that should
appear.

for the power produced, customers receive
credits on monthly electric bills, lowering

Holidays in the
hood
PhinneyWood knows how to celebrate the holidays in style. Take
the Woodland Park Zoo’s WildLights Celebration. Each year, the
Zoo decks out the grounds surrounding the North Meadow with
approximately 575,000 energy-efficient LED lights to recreate wild
animals and wild places in two and three dimensions. This year, the rest of the neighborhood is swinging into action with
Monkey Business, a “parade” of 150 lighted metal-frame monkeys
that will hang from awnings, windows, trees, and poles up and down
Phinney and Greenwood Avenues.
Some of these monkeys will also
“climb” the old air raid tower at 67th and
Phinney as part of the new tower lighting
event that will kick off the holidays on
November 29.
And if all this sparkle isn’t enough, you
can check out the Winter Festival and
Crafts Fair the first weekend in December
at the Phinney Neighborhood Association.

and dancers, and live

that between 1919 and 1934, the corner
of Phinney Avenue North and North 55th
Street was home to an amusement center
that was a citywide attraction?
In June 1919 George and Lucy Vincent
open a carousel, ferris wheel, and
dancehall directly across the street from
Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo. The business
operated under the name Woodland Park
Pavilion, Woodland Amusement Park,
and (in at least 1929 and 1930) New
Carousselle.
On the evening of August 26, 1934, the
carousel and its pipe organ and the ferris
wheel were destroyed in a three-alarm
fire. The fire drew thousands of curious
spectators, many of them attracted by the
horrific sight of the enormous ferris wheel
ablaze. The cause of the fire was never
identified.
