Inland Waterways (IW)
Personal Watercraft (PW)
The RYA Inland Waterway’s Helmsman’s course is for
boaters wanting to cruise the UK’s inland waterways or
Europe’s extensive network of lakes, rivers and canals.
Choose from a variety of different types of training including
Shorebased (SB) and Correspondence (C)
A Personal Watercraft Certificate (PWC) is essential if
you would like to hire, use or launch a jet ski/wetbike
from any UK harbour and will also be required when
going abroad. The RYA’s PWC is available and covers
beginner skills through to experienced rider and coaching
qualifications.

While practical skills are essential for the sailing and
manoeuvring of any boat there is a degree of theory that
has to be covered. Navigation, meteorology, rules and
seamanship are all covered in theory courses for sailing
and motorsailing available through the RYA. The theory
courses are also available on a correspondence basis giving
a student a flexible study programme to suit their needs.
Windsurfing (W)
Fastfwd is the RYA windsurfing coaching and training
system. All ages and abilities can learn to windsurf and
a variety of courses through the RYA Fastfwd scheme
will take you from beginner skills, updating on the latest
windsurfing equipment and getting into freestyle and
competing.

Powerboating (P)
A range of practical onboard sailing and motoring courses
are available through the RYA, from the Start Yachting
Practical and Helmsman’s course right through every level of
boating up to Yachtmaster Ocean certificates. These courses
provide you with everything you will need to know to safely
and effectively get out on the water and enjoy it.
For those who want to enjoy being a little closer to
the water, powerboating offers a range of possibilities
whether using a boat to go waterskiing or wakeboarding
or needing a craft as a safety boat during a regatta. A
range of courses for small, open powerboats are on offer
through the RYA National Powerboating Scheme.

Training with the MLA Professionals
Dinghy and Keelboat sailing is a great way for anyone to
get into the sport of sailing. Various courses within the
RYA National Sailing Scheme cover all aspects of Dinghy
and Keelboat sailing from beginner levels up to race
training and coaching. These courses are also available for
young children with the RYA Young Sailing Scheme.
Race Training (R)
Race training and coaching is available with many of the
MLA training centres in a variety of the watersports fields.
Multihull/Catamaran (MH)
The RYA National Sailing Scheme also cover the multihull
dinghies and for those who would like to add another string
to their bow and have the most amount of fun out on the
water, there are multihull training courses available.

The MLA is the largest group of UK charter and holiday companies that offer a wide
variety of boats in the world’s best cruising areas.

Flotilla (F)
A group of boats under the supervision of a lead boat.
Your individual yacht will accommodate your group.
The itinerary is set and morning briefings are given to
advise for the day’s destination together with any local
hazards to avoid on route. Boat knowledge is essential
for the nominated skipper and ideally the crew. Individual
companies will have certification requirements which can
be obtained.
Our charter companies adhere to current legislation, especially with regards to the Package Travel
Holiday and Package Tour Regulations 1992. All our holiday members are ATOL (Air Travel Organiser
License) bonded. ATOL is government’s licensing and financial protection scheme for air holidays and
flights sold by tour operators and travel organisers in the UK.

Crewed (CW)
You supply the nominated skipper and he/she must be
experienced in all aspects of boat handling, navigation
and have knowledge of the collision regulations. The
skipper takes full liability for the safety of the crew and
the boat. The itinerary and food provisions are normally
your responsibility. You may need to show a copy of your
Day Skipper qualification or equivalent together with a
VHF radio licence.
A boat with a qualified skipper and qualified crew are
hired to take charge and direct responsibility. No previous
experience is necessary, you can just relax or get involved
if you would like to learn. The itinerary is flexible.
A hotel with beach side water activities including
canoeing, kayaking, dingy sailing and others. Giving you
the chance to enjoy as much, or as little, as you’d like. A
flexible option for the family and those new to boating.
Membership Boating and Boat Share (MBBS)
Activities (A)
Membership Boating is an increasingly popular way to get
on the water, offering many of the benefits of ownership
but without the capital commitment, mooring costs and
maintenance issues. Members have flexible access to one
or more boats that they enjoy over a 12 month contract.
Boat share or shared ownership allows you to share the
purchase and running costs of your boat with other like
minded owners. Sharing a boat with others will get you
on the water at a significantly lower cost than outright
ownership.
Sail & Stay (SS)
A holiday combination of dividing your time between
accommodation, like a hotel or villa, and a boat. Your
time on the boat can be a bareboat/skippered or flotilla
option, giving a perfect blend of land and sea options.

A qualified skipper is hired together with the vessel and
they are responsible for your safety and the safety of
the yacht. One other crew member must have previous
knowledge, as assistance with certain boat handling duties
may be required. You or your skipper can choose the
itinerary.
A vast range of things to do from snorkelling, diving,
windsurfing, waterskiing, kayaking, canoeing and dinghy
sailing including others. Individual companies provide a
full list of what is offered.

In the business world, Management Training on the water is becoming increasingly
popular as a method of testing and extending the abilities of leadership, communication,
initiative and team bonding in a new and exciting environment.
Maintenance Scheme (MS)
A wider variety of expert services for boats is available
for routine maintenance, boat repairs including the
unexpected ones, installing and/or removing equipment,
interior cleaning, underwater maintenance, simple wash
downs, winterising, and will result in improved longevity
of a vessel. Giving you the option to just enjoy being out
on the water, and leaving the management of the boats
up to the management company.

regattas and also offer services to help you manage your own corporate boat.

Team Building on the water is used as a method of testing
and extending the abilities of leadership, communication,
initiative and morale in a new and demanding
environment. Whether cruising or racing, Team Building
can be used as a ‘thank you’ to your staff or as a way to
build confidence and team work within the team or as a
reward to your customers.
Planned excursions to specific destinations with set
itineraries for various durations. A selection of different
types and sizes of boats are available. Cruises provide an
opportunity to extend cruising experience, enjoy historical
and geographical tours whilst savouring idyllic scenery.
Advice and assistance on legal requirements tailorded to
the needs of today’s boat buyer and owner whether for
one or more boats. MLA members offer a consultancy
service with regards to Small Commercial Vessel (SCV)
Coding for a boat of 24 metres or less wishing to operate
commercially which is a legal requirement of Maritime
Coastguard Agency (MCA) on behalf of the British
Government.
Experience Days (EXP)

Surprise someone special with an exhilarating water sport
experience or relaxing sailing day from our members’
diverse water activities range. From fast and furious
RIB rides and powerboating to all day swimming and
sunbathing on a yacht – there are many experiences to
suit your personality and budget.
A personally owned boat can be used for Training or
Chartering by a professional company. This can be
achieved with either a brand new or second-hand boat.
Services can be assisting a purchase, coding a boat and
handling bookings. A tailor-made contract will be in place
to cover usage, marketing, earnings etc.
Special Events (SE)
Many events around the world take place as a single
occasion, biannually, annually and biennial events. These
include famous races, regattas such as Cowes Week
and rallies where a boat is chartered as a spectator
or participator. This is a particularly good option for

Llangollen since 1884. We now operate two modern purpose built
boats for both public trips and private charter. We also operate
2 hour motor boat trips over the world famous Pontlysyllte
Aqueduct. Self drive day boat hire is also available.

Depending on your destination, a few fundamental pieces of official paper could be passport, visa, medical
insurance and cancellation insurance. Did you know that you can claim back most of your treatment
and medication costs if you fall ill or have an accident in Europe? That’s as long as you carry a European
Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The EHIC entitles the holder to free or reduced cost, state-provided medical
treatment if you fall ill or have an accident while visiting any country in the European Economic Area (EEA).
Please note that an EHIC is not a substitute for comprehensive travel insurance.
In additional to this paperwork you may be asked to provide your RYA qualifications, but ask the company
you are going with. Remember to also take your log book so you can record your sailing experience.
Your well-being
You are obliged to disclose any complaints or ailments, which are likely to affect your physical welfare
during your course/charter and if applicable, you will need to inform your skipper of any medication you are
taking. You might be asked to complete a declaration regarding your health. All water activities will ideally
require you to be able to swim although non-swimmers can be accommodated and all that is asked is that
you inform your provider. If provisioning is included in your booking, please remember to state if you have
any special dietary requirements.
When you get there
You will be greeted and given a briefing to familiarise yourself with your selected vessel/location regarding
safety and emergency procedures. Information about your destination can be supplied with regards to
local hazards as well as places of interest. Ship papers will be readily available for all vessels together with
contingency plans to cover all events. The skipper’s decision is final as he/she is responsible for your safety
when you are on board. A representative of your chosen MLA member company will be fully contactable for
the duration of your booking. Provisioning your boat (food & drinks supplies) may be included or pre-arranged
with your booking, remember to check with the company you booked with as packages differ considerably.
