As the only school selected in Washington state, the eighth grade U.S. History students at SCS were overjoyed with the news of having been chosen to design and create ornaments for Washington state’s tree for the 2011 National Christmas Tree display located in President’s Park in Washington, D.C. Students created twenty-three ornaments that adorn the state tree in President’s Park while one chosen ornament decorates the White House Visitor Center Christmas tree, which showcases one ornament from each of the 56 states, territories and the District of Columbia. As one of America’s oldest holiday traditions beginning in 1923, the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony has become a month-long event presented by the National Park Foundation and National Park Service. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is - His good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2 Time Valued Mail “It is an honor to be selected, as I take a group of students almost every year to Washington, D.C. to visit our nation’s capital,” said Karla Tripoli, eighth grade U.S. History teacher. “We discuss the National Christmas Tree ceremony and visit its location. Now we actually get to participate in this historic event by making the decorations for our state’s tree and it is such an honor.” Students developed their design strategies to represent Washington state by including things that represented the entire state—not just the Seattle area. Some students drew various landmarks such as the Space Needle or Pike Place Market. Others chose various state symbols such as the Hemlock, apple, or Goldfinch to name a few. Materials came from a variety of sources such as foam, clay and construction paper. Our Mission Please correct your label, check the appropriate box and return to SCS. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is - His good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2 As this time of year often brings hectic schedules and extra demands, let us always remember the true reason for the season, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. It is in Him that we find our true joy and peace. I marvel at how God continues to provide for our every need. The giving hearts of our community allow SCS to carry on God’s wonderful ministry of equipping our students for Christ. This year’s theme, RENEWED, from Romans 12:2, has been an inspiration to all at SCS who selflessly serve our students, modeling Christ in all aspects of the classroom, on the athletic field, through fine & performing arts and in school activities. God’s continued faithfulness in providing a 65 year legacy of quality Christian education for students is a true gift to be reminded of this holiday season. Fall highlights and updates to share: Annual Fund - Your contributions thus far have been so appreciated! We trust in the Lord’s provision to reach our $100,000 goal, and I am deeply grateful that His abundant blessings often come through the generosity of parents, grandparents, alumni, friends and business partners. It’s your continuous gifts that allow us to provide an exemplary education for students. Parents are utilizing Employer Gift Match opportunities, which continue to be a significant blessing. Page 2 Student Crafted Ornaments Displayed in Washington D.C.– As mentioned on the front page, our eighth grade U.S. History students enjoyed designing ornaments for Washington D.C’s National Christmas Tree Display. What an exceptional honor for our students as Seattle Christian was the only school selected from our state. Elementary Enhancements – Many parents are talking about the exciting program enhancements at our school. The new Science & Art Lab and Robotics Club offerings are allowing for more active learning opportunities and inspiration of innovative thinking for young learners. The Robotics article and photos on page 10 showcase these impressive programs, providing more hands-on learning. Board Members – SCS welcomed new board members, Jack Childress and Mike Shimasaki. Jack joins us with extensive marketing and sales experience while Mike‘s professional background is in business and finance. Both look forward to their five year term alongside elementary parent, Chris Glynn, who works on the leadership team at World Vision. Chris joined the Board of Trustees in March. What a privilege it is to serve students and families at Seattle Christian. My prayer is that each of you would enjoy treasured time with family and friends during the holidays, reflecting on our Savior’s birth. Our mission to Educate Minds, Nurture Hearts and Honor Christ is strengthened through your valued partnership and commitment to Christian Education. May you be richly blessed! We thought we had been tested before, but we were wrong. This test took everything in us to just want to take in another breath…our hearts were broken. “I think I heard HIM knocking right here,” said young Caiden when I asked how he decided to receive Jesus as his Lord and Savior. There is something very special about spending a week at summer camp. GOD has our family serving at www.SAMBICA.com (Camp and Retreat/Event Property) and I absolutely love hearing these types of comments! Now that I have experienced summer camp firsthand, I believe going to camp is more important than ever before. It unplugs kids and creates opportunities for new friendships, new challenges we maybe didn’t think were possible, and most importantly, time with The Creator of the universe. On July 2, 2011 our two daughters were burned in a horrible accident. Our two year old, Brooklyn, was released from Harborview the next day with first and second degree burns to her hands and face, but our sweet little four year old, Addison, had a long road and a tough fight ahead of her. Addison was burned over 20% of her body. While her burns were not life threatening, she almost lost her life due to her lungs getting sick. She was on a ventilator for 35 of her 48 day hospital stay. Addison had third degree burns (full thickness burns) on her hands and face that required three grafting surgeries. From the beginning of this story, Dave and I asked, “why?” Maybe not out loud or in a “why me?” fashion but a “why, Lord” would you allow us to go through yet another trial? “Why, Lord” was Addison burned so badly when I (Sarah) was sitting two feet away? “Why, Lord” can she not breathe on her own? During this horrible time in our lives, our “foster” son (16 months at the time and had been with us since he was three days) was also taken and placed in another home due to protocol. At this point in the story, it felt as if the wind had been knocked out of me, as if whatever I had in me that was keeping me standing was ripped out of my soul. I cried out for restoration for my family. And that is what I received. One request at a time, our prayers were answered. We had people praying around the world for our precious children. People who had never prayed before were on their knees praying healing for Addison and praying that our little boy could return home. My faith never wavered. I had the choice to blame God. Quite frankly, He can be easy to blame when things go wrong. Or I could thank Him in His wisdom and discernment that He spared Addie’s life and He healed her. He intervened in our situation to bring our little guy home much sooner than the state had told us. That little boy will be adopted on December 15 and will forever be a Strode. Page 8 A “Can’t Miss” Future ALUMNI NEWS Prayers for Restoration The lessons I have learned over the past several months are just too great in number for me to write. But I will tell you this, never allow your faith to waiver. Sometimes the only thing you can do is rely on the Lord. Do it. Rely on Him. He will make your path straight. He will hold you up when you have nothing in you. He will send wisdom when you cannot think straight. We welcome readers to follow our story at http://www.caringbridge.org/ visit/addisonstrode. I pray you are encouraged through our story. I pray that you too can seek the Lord in all trials. Seattle Christian has and always will be held near and dear to my heart. They were family to me when I had none. I met my husband there! My most cherished friendships were built during my years there. I learned valuable lessons there and I was taught to love the Lord with all my heart, soul, mind and with all my strength…He hasn’t failed me yet. He never will. My first experience of “summer camp” was actually my senior year at Seattle Christian. Our ASB officers planned an all-school retreat. Of course, as I look back, I don’t feel like I did much of the actual work but was fortunate to serve with some outstanding classmates with a strong work ethic. I still remember that all-school retreat. The delicious meals served by the Linmans, a giant soap war, singing around the campfire, and getting to know my friends and teachers on a deeper level. Proverbs 19:21 says, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.” Never in my life has this been so clear. As I look back on my spiritual journey, I am so thankful for my school years at Seattle Christian. They provided the key ingredient to becoming the best husband, father, and leader I can be: God’s word. At Seattle Christian, the teachers care and in a world that continues to beat us down, this is so critical. The Bible is the core of the curriculum and in a world that seems to follow anything but GOD, I learned if I follow HIM, I really do have a “can’t miss” future (Jeremiah 29:11-13). 10 Year Class Reunion The Seattle Christian class of 2001 held our 10 year reunion on June 24th and 25th. On Friday evening, we ventured to Capitol Hill to The Garage for some bowling and billiards, however we mostly just visited and reminisced. We had a great turnout as 26 of our classmates attended. We are proud of our attendance and so glad that many in our class have remained friends. On Saturday, we met at SCS for a BBQ lunch. We were thankful for good weather! Twenty-nine from our class were there, many with spouses and kids. We ate good food and reflected with each other on all that can change in 10 years. We are so thankful for those that attended the reunion! A special thanks to those that travelled from out of town. For those that were unable to make it, we sure missed you! We look forward to seeing you at the 20 year reunion! For the Japanese and for our family, March 2011 will never be forgotten. We were in Tokyo when the earthquake hit. Our lives were in the palm of God’s hand and yet we felt His awesome power as well. By Kelee (Wall) Kjack, Class of ‘00 Spouse: Patrick Children: Parker (Two years old) and Landon (Four months) Occupation: Kelee (English teacher) and Patrick (Math teacher), both at Golden Valley High School, Bakersfield, CA Church: Living Grace Recently, I have found myself using the phrase “time is flying” when speaking with family and friends. This concept of time and the lack of it have been hitting me pretty hard, especially since the arrival of my second son, Landon. Like many of you, I find myself wondering where the days go and often just “holding on” rather than really embracing each moment. Since 1996, my husband Richard and I have been missionaries in Japan along with our five children who are now ages 4-17. Japan is a difficult mission field, but the Lord is working one by one. We have been so privileged to be part of a movement among Japanese Christians, making disciples through relationship and house churches. Renewed relationships with the Father, and with each other, are bringing about transformation, and the good news of Jesus is spreading. Two years ago, a lady approached us and asked, “Does your God heal?” We invited her to our home where we prayed over her. By the second visit, she received Christ and began experiencing His healing. Today she is thriving and sharing Jesus with her family and friends. After living in a spiritually dark nation for many years, I have come to deeply appreciate my Christian education and how it pointed me to Christ. I am so grateful! Knowing Jesus is everything. It is sad that many of my friends do not have this hope. He has been my Light in darkness, my Joy in the journey, my Deliverer in disaster. Following God’s Heart By Breanne (Colby) Orndorff, Class of ‘06 My love for missions started at age five. One day, while walking down the hallway at church, a poster grabbed my attention. The poster was of missionaries carrying kids out of the sewers in Romania. I knew at that moment, and later confirmed through prayer, that God was calling me into vocational missions. Page 6 Merry Christmas, Fellow Alumni! ALUMNI NEWS Never Forget the “One” When it came time for high school graduation, I thought I had everything figured out: where I was going to graduate college from, what my degree would be in, even down to the job I was going to have. My first year of college went as planned, but then God once again reminded me that His plan is always better than my own. After transferring from Northwest University to the University of Washington, I graduated with a degree in General Studies and a minor in Asian Studies. I decided to go to grad school and pursue a masters in teaching. I had always wanted to work with children and I thought that teaching could be something I could use on the mission field some day. While sitting in lectures, I began to realize that God didn't want the mission field to be a someday dream, but He wanted me to go now! This word from God scared me. I had worked so hard to get to where I was. I took tests, I filled out forms, and I paid the money. It didn't matter… God was calling me at that moment. (continued on page 7) Time continues to taunt me with its quickness when I recently turned the big 30. For my birthday, my dad got me a book, which I wasn’t sure I would actually read, being as my reading has been slim with two boys under two! Yet I did begin reading it and found myself rocked to the core. The title obviously gives evidence to the crux of the book- it is titled Counterfeit Gods ….fake, or false gods. I feel like I couldn’t be reading this book at a better time. In the book, the author, Timothy Keller, references the economic downfall of our time and how counterfeit gods surface as a result of hardship. He states, “The only way to free ourselves from the destructive influence of counterfeit gods is to turn back to the true one. The living God, who revealed himself both at Mount Sinai and on the Cross, is the only Lord who, if you find him, can truly fulfill you, and, if you fail him, can truly forgive you” (Keller xxiv). Although some of us may or may not have felt the extent of the economic crisis, we still have reason to ask ourselves what false gods are prominent in our life. It may or may not be hardship that draws us to see the counterfeit gods before us, but for me it is seen most by the lack of fulfillment in that which is NOT God. In the busyness of life: my husband, children, family, students, success, social standing, worrying…just to name a few, I must “turn back to the true one,” God Himself. We can all attest to the many gods we make and worship. I encourage all of us, myself first and foremost, to look to Him, Christ alone, for the one who brings true fulfillment. (continued from page 6) Although my husband and I were scared about what the future looked like, we decided to go. I went on leave from grad school, Jesse quit his job and began his own website development company, and with God's never ending provision, we were off. First to Mexico for sixth months of training and now we are currently living in Phnom Penh Cambodia. We work at a day shelter for street kids called Sparrow's Nest. After conducting research and surveys with the street people in our community, the results showed that the parents wanted something for their children to do during the days. They wanted their children to learn manners, hygiene, English, Khmer, and a trade of some sort. The most important job we have is to share the love of Jesus with these people. This country and these people are so lost, but I remind myself they are not all that different from you and me. I do not know what our future holds, and I do not know how long God has us in Cambodia, but I do know that God has us here now to fulfill His calling on our lives. I do not know what our future holds, and I do not know how long God has us in Cambodia, but I do know that God has us here now to fulfill His calling on our lives. For more information on how to help, please visit goforlove.org. Jesse and I would love your prayers and support while we are on this journey. Page 7 ALUMNI NEWS By Sarah (Edwards) Strode, Class of ‘00 By Matt Wimmer, Class of ‘89 Recently, my husband David Strode (class of 2000) and I had a true test of faith.
