It is of course with great pleasure that we open our issue #22 with the news that the latest CNB 76 is in the water! Even as we write, she is en route for the Mediterranean. We appreciate the fact that CNB teams have pulled out all the stops to meet this deadline, but let us not forget that this has been a year of other equally remarkable events: the emotional launch of the superyacht Grand Bleu Vintage after a seven-month refit, which restored her to her former glory; the spectacle of 22 CNBs on the start line at the CNB Rendez-vous in Porquerolles last June; the commencement of work on Bordeaux 5, a brand new building of nearly 6,000 m² which will be entirely devoted to the shipyards’ composite monohull construction… Lots going on, then, but all with one common goal: to prepare for the future. The CNB 76 is indeed one of CNB’s yachts of the future, the refit of Grand Bleu Vintage marks the beginning of a new activity at the shipyard (who could be better qualified to restore and refurbish the yachts built by CNB?), the port of Porquerolles has announced additional berths for next year... and the Bordeaux 5 workshops will begin building their first boats by April 2014. CNB Newsletter #22, therefore, is encouraging: it promises still more interesting stories to tell you in the next issue! We look forward to seeing you all very soon at one of this new season’s boat show. Olivier Lafourcade, Thomas Gailly Nicolas Claris n 5th CNB Rendez-Vous in Porquerolles Kismet won, but I especially remember another victory. This mirage that wasn’t a mirage at all: these beautiful boats handled by men, intimate with the sea. “Draw me a sailboat” - like the Little Prince, they make their dreams a reality. I was told that, on a fine day, a Lebanese client, on a visit to the shipyard, requested “a boat the colour of today’s sky”. In the first sunlight of this RendezVous in Porquerolles, there she was, the same colour as the sky. The CNB Yachts are a dream come true. n That of the star hunters… Nicolas Claris With the first summer sun, twenty-two sailing yachts, enormous birds alighting on the pontoons of an island which seems to have always belonged to them: Porquerolles. There were 19 Bordeaux 60s and 3 Superyachts spraying a perfume of simple joy on to the evening air. They came, as they do every year, for their rally, the word “race” having been outlawed. With their children, their wives, their fellow mariners, these yatchsmen come from all over the world. From Spain and Russia, Switzerland, Holland and Lebanon, England and France… From Phoenicia. From Australia they came out of simple curiosity, and they left completely converted. But they have a kindred spirit. As the sun sets, you can perceive in the depth of their eyes a shared connection: their yacht. A yacht that they have dreamt of, probed, reinvented, with the help of CNB’s craftsmen. Some have known each other for years, others have come for the first time. One has opted for 3D sails, and carbon masts… the stuff of teenage dreams. Women and children are all part of the sailing world, at CNB. Saturday morning, is D Day: 22 yachts line up, half-beast, half-gazelle, hyperglamorous. Capricious winds make tactics essential, as if to give the leading role to the elegance of the manoeuvre, in all the languages of Babel – my head was spinning, we rubbed our eyes as we might standing before a mirage: here a Russian Tiger named Macha, painted on a 280 m2 spinnaker, and there, a Gulliver-sized disco dancer… All of them floating below the island’s breathtaking cliffs. On this CNB design, each yacht has taken on the shape of her owner’s dream. Each rig, each interior is different. Combining performance and the elegance of her lines with the comfort of a home. In one of the Bordeaux 60s, a boy plays trains as the yacht rounds a buoy. On deck his family drops the spinnaker and cuts inside l’Imaginaire, the boy’s small level crossing hardly wobbles. These may be the right words for these CNB yachts: they cut inside like a dream. In the church square, there is fresh fish on the dinner menu, and in the cockpits sometimes there were two of us, sometimes twelve. On Sunday morning, little Noé woke up with a heartfelt cry: “my boat is beautiful!”. Anchored in Carribeanlike waters, we picnicked on sweet peaches, tangy goat’s cheese and wine the colour of gold. Dolce Vita between sea and sky, the water sparkles with their laughter. And the tour of the island starts, dreamlike. A gentle breeze propels the CNB yachts. The manoeuvres are earnest, but at the same time everything is luxury, peace and pleasure. Nicolas Claris Julie Bourgois is a journalist who frequently contributes to Voiles & Voiliers magazine. She joined us in Porquerolles last June and shares her impressions with us here… in her own special style! nCNB 76 #1: What a programme! From June 2013 through to February 2014, CNB has commissioned a professional crew to test the first CNB76. Meeting with Marc Renwick, skipper of this new generation of CNB yachts. Why 6 months sailing on this number 1? Marc Renwick - The aim is to review all aspects of the boat, be it in terms of sailing, equipment or life on board... basically a 6000 mile trial! premiere the CNB 76 at the Cannes boat show, then we will be in Porquerolles for the photo and video shoots essential to good communication and a comprehensive brochure. At the end of September, we will sail to St Tropez, for potential clients and the nautical press to try out the yacht, and needless to say for the first three owners to test her out! During the autumn, we will carry out two other sea trials series: one in Palma de Mallorca and the other in Istanbul. discussions with the technicians and the R&D engineers. We also had to equip the boat with safety equipment and all life on board equipment… The next step will be the actual sailing. We will have a technical team on board who will be there to refine the boat’s settings during the first delivery legs. Then, the R&D managers will join us to see the result of their work “in situ”. How can we follow the CNB 76 during this period? What is your schedule? What will the main phases of these sea trials be? M. R. - The yacht will be launched in Bordeaux during the month of August. We will then sail around Spain to world M. R. - The preparation of the boat in Bordeaux was an important first step: we were able to meet with suppliers, hold M. R. - There will be regular updates on the website www.cnb76. You can also follow us on our blog www.cnb76experience.fr. We will post the different stages of our sailing, along with beautiful video footage! n n The shipyard The Bordeaux 5 building, adjoining CNB’s historic Bordeaux 1 building is undergoing great change! After the on-going demolition of the roof and facades is finished, CNB will reconfigure this site straight from the slab and Eiffel-design steelwork to equip a new 6000 m² workshop dedicated to the construction of CNB’s composite monohulls. Bordeaux 5 will consist of a moulding surface and a mounting surface with a partial mezzanine. The yachts will be put together on a single assembly line with 3 stations plus a deck station. This new production tool should quickly allow us to build about ten boats per year. Road works are scheduled to be completed by late October, at the same time as the roof of the building. Interior layout and installation of equipment are scheduled for between November 2013 and March 2014, which means the site could start operating n as early as April 2014. Nicolas Claris Bordeaux 5: a new workshop for the CNB monohulls nNews May 2013: Elizabeth D, a Bordeaux 60, wins the Silver Bollard Regatta (Mallorca) A benchmark in the Balearic Islands for its nautical events, Port Adriano hosted the Silver Bollard Regatta from 17 to May 19 this year. Despite a blocked Genoa furler which incurred a significant handicap during the second leg, the Bordeaux 60 Elisabeth D made a great impression by finishing first in the general ranking. As stated by her owner at the end of the race: “we pushed Elizabeth D to her limits, and in return she gave us a beautiful n victory”. March 2013: the other “guest of honour” at the opening of the new Chaban Delmas Bridge in Bordeaux. The Bordeaux 60 accompanied the threemasted ship Belém during her inaugural sail under the new Chaban Delmas Bridge, on Saturday, March 16th, 2013 in Bordeaux. The bridge was lifted for the first time at 9:30 to let pass the twenty-boat nautical parade which came to take part in the event. A wonderful show that delighted the thousands of spectators lining the banks of n the River Garonne. Modular building: R&D and systems to enhance the “custombuild”. our technicians’ expertise with a more efficient assembly process. Whether it’s the owner’s fore cabin, the engine room or the aft part of the yacht, all are designed in 3D, carefully pre-assembled outside the yacht and then installed in the hull with a much lower margin for error than that of conventional fitting. The virtual design adds to the efficiency of the operators while maintaining CNB’s uncompromising levels n of quality. Jesus Renedo Photography Nicolas Claris July 2013: Will Chrisco be the most beautiful, in the eyes of Boote Exclusiv readers? The famous CNB 100’ Chrisco, whose elegance and performance have created such a buzz, has received numerous awards* since she was launched in 2009. And last July, Chrisco was selected as one of the 25 most beautiful superyachts in the world, including the 6 most beautiful sailing yachts, by the German magazine Boote Exclusiv. The readers must now decide which superyacht will be awarded their prize. The results will be given at Düsseldorf’s next boat show in January n 2014… *2009: International Superyacht Design Award (Best Sail 24m to 40m) - Wetzels Brown Partners (International Superyacht Design Award) - Best Interior (Power and Sail Award) - 2010: Wetzels Brown Partners (ShowBoats Newcomer interior design Award). CNB nConstruction For several years, the know-how accumulated by CNB over the past 25 years has been available on our technicians’ computer screens. Our yachts are entirely developed with the help of CAD. The decision to use modules for the CNB 76’s inside layout is an interesting example of this approach: it allows us to combine nKnow-how With more than 90 superyachts built since 1987, many owners have approached CNB about a “refurbishment” of their yacht. Indeed, which shipyard could be more qualified than CNB for such work? Our first project was Grand Bleu Vintage, which spent more than 6 months in Bordeaux undergoing a comprehensive makeover… and what a makeover! Between the arrival in Bordeaux of the CNB 95 on October 1st, 2012, and the delivery to her owner 6 months later, one thing is for sure, the CNB teams were very busy: checks and standards updates of course, but also full painting of the hull and superstructures, a new teak deck and new ceilings in all the cabins… The greatest reward for CNB technicians, after the job was completed? Probably these words from the owner: “Grand Bleu Vintage just celebrated her 10th anniversary and I wanted to provide her with a refit, which I entrusted to CNB, where she was born. Six months in the workshops last winter for a new teak deck with light grey seals, flush deck hatches, all of the painting and of course the complete technical overhaul including the fitting of the latest navigational instruments. Subsequently, 10 years on, the Briand design Grand Bleu Vintage has stood the test of time! I especially appreciated the work done by CNB: the attention to detail, keeping within budget and meeting the completion date, as well as the invaluable coordination with my skipper who was present throughout the refit. n Congratulations to the entire team.” Nicolas Claris Refitting Grand Bleu Vintage nCNB 2013 Calendar Grand Bleu Vintage, (CNB 95’) and SPIIP (CNB 86’) are expected in early December at the Antigua Charter Show, the hotspot for the presentation of charter yachts to international brokers in the beautiful English Harbor, marking the beginning of the winter season between the BVI and Grenada. Grand Bleu Vintage’s cook hopes to win the Boat Show’s cooking contest, thanks to the annual training courses he has been taking at Paul Bocuse’s catering school in recent years. Evolution, a CNB 60’, will join them a • little later after a transatlantic crossing with the ARC. “Classic” cruise or “active” cruise, these sailing yachts can be booked to follow the St Barth’s Bucket, the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta in Virgin Gorda or the Voiles de St Barth; or simply for the pleasure of a winter sailing in warm turquoise waters, guided by an ever-present light breeze.
