Toronto FC (April 4, 1:00pm
on Fox Soccer Channel)
Founded: 2006
Home Stadium: BMO Field
Record Since 2000: 16-31-17
All Time Scorer in MLS: Danny Dichio (11)
All Time Cups/Shields: 0
2008 Record: 9-13-8, 35 pts, 7th in Eastern
Conference
2008 Leading Scorer: Danny Dichio (5)
2008 Keeper: Greg Sutton (1.46 GAA, 6
Clean Sheets)
Capsule: While this will be a beautiful game to
watch due to the huge amount of life in the
stands with the Red Patch Boys, U-Sector, and
others, TFC will likely for its first time actually
have an offense that matters. They brought
back hometown boy Dwayne de Rosario, one of
the best players in MLS history. De-Ro has
multiple championships and will be featured
as a center attacking midfielder in one of the
league’s best midfields. Rookie Sam Cronin
joins former Barnsley player Rohann Ricketts
and Honduran national Amado Guevara in an
attacking offense that has more players than
slots. After Marvell Wynne, the Reds will
struggle on defense and Sutton will likely continue to face a rain of shots.
Chivas USA (April 18,
7:30pm on KING 5)
Founded: 2004
16 • SOCCER SEATTLE • VOL. 1 NO. 1
Home Stadium: Home Depot Center, Carson,
CA
Record Since 2000: 41-49-34
All Time Scorer in MLS: Ante Razov (30)
All Time Cups/Shields: 0
2008 Record: 12-11-7, 43 pts, 2nd in Western
Conference
2008 Leading Scorer: Sacha Kljestan, Alecko
Eskandarian, Ante Razov (5)
2008 Keeper: Brad Guzan (1.33 GAA, 4 Clean
Sheets)
Capsule: Chivas USA once tried to maintain its
parent brand, Chivas Guadalajara of Mexico,
and be a team full of players of Mexican descent.
Now they just focus on winning over fans by
winning games. This has led to a deeply talented
team that played without former Seattle Sounder
Maykel Galindo for most of their games in 2008.
Galindo scored 12 goals in 2007. The club is
known as the Goats and are in transition—
they’ve lost their Keeper to Aston Villa of England and Sacha Kljestan appears to be on the
verge of a transfer to Europe. The goalkeeping
duo is the aging Zach Thornton and youngster
Dan Kennedy. Neither would appear to have the
starting place automatically. Chivas USA is the
most successful of the modern expansion clubs.
Chicago Fire (May 2, 5:30pm
on KONG 6/16)
Founded: 1997
Home Stadium: Toyota Park, Bridgeview, IL
Record Since 2000: 108-92-61
All Time Scorer in MLS: Ante Razov (76)
All Time Cups/Shields: 1 MLS Cup, 1 Supporters’ Shield, 4 US Open Cups
2008 Record: 13-10-7, 46 pts, 2nd in Eastern
Conference
2008 Leading Scorer: Chris Rolfe (9)
2008 Keeper: Jon Busch (1.10 GAA, 10 Clean
Sheets)
Capsule: The Fire will depend on 30+ yearolds to lead the team on offense with Brian
McBride and Cuauhtémoc Blanco joining Rolfe
FC Dallas (May 16, 5:30pm
on KONG 6/16)
Founded: 1996 as Dallas Burn
Home Stadium: Pizza Hut Park, Frisco, TX
Record Since 2000: 102-111-45
All Time Scorer in MLS: Jason Kreis (91)
All Time Cups/Shields: 1 US Open Cup
2008 Record: 8-10-12, 36 pts, 5th in Western
Conference
2008 Leading Scorer: Kenny Cooper (18)
2008 Keeper: Dario Sala (1.32 GAA, 7 Clean
Sheets)
Capsule: Dallas looks to put a poor 2008 behind them and take advantage of the scoring
duo of Cooper and Cunningham in a 4-4-2 diamond with team captain Pablo Richetti as
the holding midfielder. Dave van der Bergh left
Red Bull to come to the Dallas left wing where
he will look to add more to the potent offense.
There are still questions in the Dallas defense,
as there are for almost every team that didn’t
make the playoffs. Former Husky George John
provides cover in Center Defense, which gives
you another reason to watch this match.
Sounders fans may feel they have a score to
settle with this side after a tempestuous US
Open Cup Semi-Final game in 2007, which
10,000 Sounders fans attended.
2008 Keeper: Bouna Coundoul (1.24 GAA, 5
Clean Sheets)
Capsule: The Rapids are a team that rides its
ability to win at home in the thin air of the
Mile High City. Bringing in first-year head
coach Gary Smith from the Arsenal coaching
system will likely provide long-term gains,
but the Rapids will have to gel in the midfield
to succeed in 2009. They dealt away underperforming Christian Gomez and brought in
Ivan Guerrero from DC United and look to the
young Federal Way native to step up into his
role as an attacking midfielder in front of captain Pablo Mastroeni. Former Sounders keeper
Preston Burpo got nearly half the starts in between the pipes for Colorado last year, and as
Coundoul continues to lead Senegal in their
quest for the World Cup, Burpo should share
the duties again.
KEY OPPONENTS TO WATCH
Our resident MLS expert has selected one key player
to watch on each of the Sounders early-season road
opponents.
By Dave Clark
TORONTO FC: Dwayne de Rosario — if MLS
had a Hall of Fame, this Center Mid would be a
lock.
CHIVAS USA: Sacha Kljestan — The National
Team winger won’t be in MLS long.
CHICAGO: Cuauhtemoc Blanco and Brian
McBride — bitter rivals in National Colors lead a
potent offense.
FC DALLAS: Kenny Cooper — on a quest for 20
this year
Colorado Rapids (May 23,
6:30pm on KONG 6/16)
COLORADO: Pablo Mastoeni — has over 200
MLS games and 60 US Caps
Founded: 1996
Home Stadium: Dick’s Sporting
Goods Park, Commerce City, CO
Record Since 2000: 98-113-61
All Time Scorer in MLS: Paul Bravo (39)
All Time Cups/Shields: 0
2008 Record: 11-14-5, 38 pts, 4th in Western
Conference
2008 Leading Scorer: Conor Casey (11)

on the 3-man attack. They lack proven depth,
so their success will entirely depend on the
health of the club. But if Marco Pappa, Patrick
Nyarko, or Justin Mapp makes the step forward, the offense will be quite potent. The
backline is solid if unspectacular, allowing
155 shots on goal last season, but with Busch
standing on his head as the best keeper in the
league last year.
SOCCER 101
By Jon Wells
Many of you attending today’s Sounders
match will be longtime soccer diehards. You’ve
followed soccer since you were old enough to
walk, you’ve waited patiently (or not so patiently) for Seattle to finally get an MLS team. You
know all the rules of soccer, all the unique soccer terms, and all the ins and outs that make soccer the world’s number one spectator sport.
If you’re one of those types, this column is not
for you.
This column is for those who haven’t been lifelong soccer fans, but who are eager to learn more
about the game. While I won’t be able to explain
the entire sport in one page, I’ll do my best to
give you a better understanding of what you’re
watching out there today.
First of all, you need to know a few basic
rules. The most basic rule is that the players, except the goalkeeper, can’t touch the ball with
their hands. And the goalkeeper can only touch
the ball if it’s inside the 18-yard box surrounding the goal. Once the goalkeeper leaves this
area, he must play the ball like any other player
on the field—with his feet, body, or head.
Then there’s the offside rule, which dates back
to the 1800s and which some of you will know
from ice hockey. A player cannot gain an unfair
advantage by waiting for the ball near the opposing goal when there are fewer than two members of the opposing team between him and the
goal. Offside can only occur in the attacking half
of the field and no player can be offside when
first playing a throw in, goal kick, or corner kick.
Soccer’s out of bounds rules differ from those
you may be familiar with from other sports. In
soccer, the ball is considered out of bounds if it
completely crosses one of the boundaries of the
field. If any portion of the ball is on the line, the
ball is still in play. The position of the ball, not
the player, determines if the ball is in bounds.
Soccer has two forms of punishment. The first,
known as a “yellow card,” is a warning and is at
the discretion of the referee. Yellow cards are
18 • SOCCER SEATTLE • VOL. 1 NO. 1
typically issued for hard fouls, bad sportsmanship, or other deliberate rule violations. If a player
gets two yellow cards in one game, he will be
ejected and his team has to play one player short.
A “red card,” which also results in an ejection, can
be issued to a player without a warning and is
typically given for excessively dirty fouls, throwing
a punch at an opposing player, or any other serious rules violation. It is also given for a tackle
that prevents a clear goal scoring opportunity.
Each game of soccer consists of two halves
lasting 45 minutes each. The clock does not stop
when the ball leaves the field of play.
Now that you’re familiar with some of the basic rules, here are some terms you should know:
Corner kick—a direct free kick that is awarded
when the defending team puts the ball over the
end line. A corner kick is taken by the offensive
team from next to the corner flag.
Goal Kick—a type of restart that is awarded
when the attacking team puts the ball over the end
line. The ball is kicked from anywhere inside the
goal area away from the goal to restart play.
Throw-in—a way to restart play when the ball
goes out over the sidelines. The team that did
not touch the ball last is allowed an overhead
throw. The ball must be released before the
thrower’s feet cross the line.
Penalty kick—A kick taken from 12 yards in
front of the goal as a result of a contact foul or hand
ball that takes place inside the penalty area.
Injury time—Time added by the referee to the
end of a period to make up for playing time lost
due to player injuries or intentional stalling by
one team.
Creating space—When a player from the attacking team moves without the ball to draw defenders away from the ball carrier and give him space.
Striker—A team’s most powerful and bestscoring forward, who typically plays towards the
center of the field.
Pitch—This term, which is used to describe
the field that soccer is played on, originated in
England and is roughly the equivalent of the
American usage of “field.”
Ljungberg, perhaps best known for being a Calvin Klein underwear model from 2003 to 2007, came in sixth in Sweden’s most handsome man contest in
1998. His nickname back home is Sid, due to his love of punk rock and for the fact that he looks somewhat like the late Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols. If you
run into Freddie at one of Seattle’s fine bars, don’t try to buy him a glass of red wine—he says he’s allergic...

Hanauer, who owned the Sounders USL-1 franchise, says that the original Seattle Sounders, members
of the North American Soccer League (NASL) from 1974 to 1983, were an important part of his
childhood. He recently told Soccer America,“I went to all those games at Memorial Stadium, and went
to the parties after the game and got the autographs, and went to the camps and got to see the
players. The buzz that existed in the city and going to the games with my family—that really got me.”

Sounders FC was understandably delighted when
Schmid, indisputably one of the top three coaches
in MLS history, signed on to coach Seattle’s expansion franchise in December, leaving the team he’d
just led to the 2008 MLS Cup, the Columbus Crew.
Over the course of a 33-year career in the game, the
56-year-old Schmid has enjoyed enormous success
at the collegiate, professional, and international
levels. Born in Tübingen, Germany, Sigi’s family
emigrated to the US in 1962, when he was 9.

Owner of the USL Sounders since 2002, Hanauer
was the point man in charge of putting together
Sounders FC’s ownership group. If the Sounders
have immediate success in the MLS, Hanauer will
likely garner much of the credit. Like Billy Beane,
GM of baseball’s Oakland Athletics, Hanauer has
the rare ability to find great talent with limited
resources. Adrian is seen by most as the true soccer man among the team’s shareholders and he
still plays regularly in a local soccer league.
