JANUARY – FEBRUARY 2005
STARTING OUR 15TH YEAR
OUR 84TH
NEW FROM THE DIRECTOR.
MEMBERS BY STATE AND COUNTRY
As we close out another successful year it’s time to look ahead and
build up our membership and also support our Newsletter with additional
ads. We need you to make an exerted effort to get an ad for the
Newsletter. We need ads to help finance the Newsletters. Talk to the
vendors who you have done business with in obtaining parts for your ‘58s.
In 2002 we picked up 34 new members but we also dropped 5
members: 2 left the club because they sold their 58s and 3 passed away.

I have recently invested quite a bit to get the car in adequate
working condition. I bought the car on Ebay (having never seen the
car) from the original owner and it was shipped to my home in
Geneva, Illinois from Saskatewan, Canada. The area is known to
be relatively dry, so the exterior and chrome are in excellent
condition. However, the car drove a little rough when I brought it
home for the first time and I was worried about serious mechanical
problems. I figure the original owner of the vehicle to be an elderly
man who was simply unable to keep up with the constant rigor of
vehicle maintenance. I'm confident I got the car, considering its
condition, for a very reasonable price, but I have already invested
almost $2,000 in the car, as the tune-up proved to be a little
more complicated than I had hoped. Assuming that the car has
spent the last several years of its life sitting in a garage, there was
significant buildup in the carburetor that was hindering the car's
overall performance. I brought the Cadillac to a reputable garage in
the area and they performed a general safety check on the vehicle
and helped me to determine what needed to be done to get the car
in working order. To make a long story short, the carburetor was
completely rebuilt by an 87-year-old man in the Chicago area and I
just had a new set of whitewalls put on, as the old set was dryrotted and consisted of mismatched tires. This weekend, I hope to
have the exhaust system replaced by a different local garage that
specializes in custom exhausts and has the machinery necessary to
bend pipes, etc. If you have any suggestions or collector advice
about exhaust or interior refurbishment, I would very much
appreciate it. Well, I probably told you more than you wanted to
know about the Caddy, but I just thought you would be interested
in hearing its most recent history. Enjoy the picture!
Sincerely,
Anthony Johnson - Geneva, IL

Ozone Cure for Stinky Cars
Do you have a car that smells? I had a 1972 Eldorado Convertible that
had sat outside for many years, acquiring a powerful stink from mold,
mildew, mice and old age. When I wanted to clean it up, I closed all the
windows to make it reasonably airtight, then set my Quantum Pure Aire

ozone generator on the passenger side floor, blowing under the seat to
maximize air circulation. (After a few minutes I saw two mice run away.)
Twenty-four hours later, I couldn’t believe the fresh clean smell. I opened
the windows again to ventilate the car before I set to with my brushes and
professional carpet shampoo to brighten up the upholstery and carpets and
remove the actual dirt. Mission accomplished!
(One should always do the ozone treatment before attempting to
remove mildew, according to the International Fabricare Institute. And
always ventilate before working in a treated area, as high concentrations
of ozone will irritate eyes, nose and lungs.)
How does it work? The ozone molecule (O3) has three loosely boundhence unstable- oxygen atoms. When ozone comes in contact with mold,
mildew, smoke or airborne bacteria, the third atom oxidizes the pollutant
and leaves behind just oxygen (O2) and water vapor. It also acts to
precipitate floating contaminants such as pollen, dust and dust mites,
viruses, smoke, animal dander, odors and toxic chemical fumes out of the
air. (According to the USDA, ionizing a room leads to 52% less dust in the
air and 95% less bacteria in the air, since many pollutants reside on
floating dust particles.)
As a carpet cleaning equipment supplier, I first saw the powers of
ozone generators thirty years ago when they were introduced to fire and
smoke restoration professionals. Twenty years ago my brother-in law
(always on the cutting edge of electronics) loaned me his small Panda unit
to freshen up my boat. That introduced me to buy a Panda of my own,
which I use not only for the cars and boat, but also in the damp cellar, the
bathroom before painting the ceiling, in musty closets-and anywhere else
my wife wrinkles up her nose! Over the years I have called on the
Quantum Pure Aire (formerly Panda) Corporation’s Barry Newman for
help and advice and found him to be more than helpful. He faxed me a
letter from Iskip Motors, (Mercedes, Porsche, Audi, BMW, Rolls Royce,
Lexus and Infiniti) highly recommending the Quantum machine to get rid
of “literally any odor, pet odors, mold, mildew, etc,” If you think you
might need your own ozone generator (I now have two), Barry or Jeff
Ramos, can be reached at: Quantum Pure Aire Corporation, 2642
Warwick Ave., Warwick, RI 02889 (401) 732-6770 Ext. 104 or 800 9665575. www.quantumpureaire.com. Just mention this article and Quantum

Chet Barrows – Cranston, RI
The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the
table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling
the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.
"Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, "I want you
to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the
important things - your God, family, your children, your health,
your friends, and your favorite passions, things that if everything
else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.
The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your
house, and your car. The sand is everything else - the small stuff.
"If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no
room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If
you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will
never have room for the things that are important. Pay attention to
the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your
children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your
wife/husband/kids out to dinner. Maybe even play another 18.
There's always time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take
care of the golf balls first, the things that really matter. Set your
priorities. The rest is just sand."
One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the
coffee represented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It
just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem,
there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."

Remember the mayonnaise jar
When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours
in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar ... and the coffee.
A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in
front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large
and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then
asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. So the
professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He
shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the
golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed
it was.
The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.
Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar
was full. The students responded with a unanimous "Yes."

Dave,
I have been a member of the club for 3 years without owning a '58 but
have always admired your dedication and contribution to the members.
It pleases me to report that I have purchased my dream car, a gorgeous
convertible, from fellow club member George Rienzo. I have known
George and the car for the past 2 1/2 years since he purchased it and
showed up at our local Caddy club.
Keep up the good work; you're one in a million!
Have a great day!

Cadillac Ranch, Amarillo, Texas
This was a four door sedan in sky blue that was rescued from a junkyard,
possibly in Dumas or maybe Milford, Texas. The tires were flat, so they
had to be pumped up, but then amazingly with the aid of a can of
carburetor cleaner it started. It cost $120.00. The interior was real dusty.
It was no fun driving the car fifty miles back to Amarillo; since it had been
exhumed from it’s grave and still gave off smells of death. Cadillacs
durable V-8 was developing 310 horsepower by 1958, but this one barely
made it to Cadillac Ranch. All 1958 models were available with a signal seeking radio with two speakers and automatic parking brake release, none
of which worked on this particular car. It was previously owned by a small
town Banker, or the owner of an insurance agency.

Do you remember a time when...
Decisions were made by going "eeny-meeny-miney-moe"?
Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming, "Do Over!"?
"Race issue" meant arguing about who ran the fastest? Catching
the fireflies (lightning bugs) could happily occupy an entire
evening? It wasn't odd to have two or three "Best Friends"? The
worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was
"cooties"? Having a weapon in school meant being caught with a
slingshot? A foot of snow was a dream come true? Saturday
morning cartoons weren't 30-minute commercials for action
figures? "Oly-oly-oxen-free" made perfect sense? Spinning
around, getting dizzy, and falling down was cause for giggles?
The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team?
War was a card game? Baseball cards in the spokes transformed
any bike into a motorcycle? Taking drugs meant orange-flavored
chewable aspirin? Water balloons were the ultimate weapon?
If you can remember all of these, then you have lived!!!!!!!
The cheapest gas around!

November 15, 2004
Hi Dave,
I always look forward to your Newsletters. In the July-August
’04 Newsletter there was a picture of a custom low rider Cadillac
of ‘58. Well, that car was modified here in London, Ontario,
Canada and I bought it a year ago. I call Ron Box the King of
Custom. He is 70 now and a former body shop owner. He has been
building and designing for decades and his customs win awards all
over North America. I’ve seen the stacks of plaques and trophies
for all the cars he has done. He has a great talent for creating
design modifications that are tasteful, not excessive. Ron’s
mechanical abilities are excellent for building and modifying
suspensions and every other aspect of a hot rod.
Out of the 34 Cadillacs I have 5 are ‘58s. All are restored to
original but I needed just one custom to throw everyone off.
This custom is a 1958 Coupe DeVille extended deck on a ’86
Fleetwood drive train and chassis. Even the entire ’86 dash is fitted
to the curved windshield. The rear window is still full size,
however the metal roof has been chopped and brought down to
cover the upper half. The stainless trim has been perfectly installed
around the smaller window openings.
Some of the numerous mods are the grille, which is original,
however Harley Davidson valve stem caps were installed over
each bullet. The stainless moldings on top of the front fenders were
reversed pointing upwards, welded in and painted the same as the
body.
Ron told me he broke 3 windshields cutting it to size. The
frenched or inset headlights are like devils eyes. The frosting on
the back of each headlight has been polished clear, then painted
red. When lit it gives a red background. There are so many suttle
alterations that even I had to be shown everything. All the features
of an ‘86 Cad were transferred over, air, outside temp, auto
dimming, twilight sentinel, etc.
It’s nice to drive, with the ’86 engine and overdrive
transmission and believe me, there’s no shortage of looks with this
one.

Dave,
I apologize for the mix-up in email addresses.
Shortly, I will send you some pictures of the car. The engine,
tranny, exhaust, and body are finally complete. All that is left is the
interior, which will be sweet when done. The entire car will be
completely correct and original, with the exception of the interior.
This is where we're going to get a bit creative. I've procured a set
of seats from a '65 Fleetwood, complete with the footrests and fold
down service trays in the back seat. They will be recovered in '58
material and pattern, but thought it would be a nice touch for this
cavernous cabin. It should be complete and on the road when the
snow melts in the spring.
Now that the exterior is done, my club sticker is proudly
displayed on the vehicle. I'm very proud of my affiliation with the
club.
It was good to hear from you. Thanks for everything you do.

Dave,
Thank you so much for replying. Just so you might know, my project was in a body shop when vandals broke in and set the shop
on fire. Neither I, nor the shop had insurance. It just seemed too much to try to salvage the entire project. However, thanks to a
couple of friends who said " It can be done and we will help you", we are now resurrecting my 1958 Convertible.

D'Agostino, John (USA) custom 1958 Eldorado Brougham, Emerald Mist. John D'Agostino's Kustom Kars have earned him a fine
reputation over the past 40 years and his creations have won many prizes at over 750 shows. Many are on display in the Petersen
Automobile Museum in LA. This car was exhibited at the Seattle Roadster Show in 2003. An advertising flyer tells us that 400 of these
1958 Broughams were built (in fact, only 304) and that they were built in Italy (the writer may have been referring to the models of 1959
and 1960, assembled there by Pininfarina). The custom body work was commissioned from Oz's Kustoms of Oroville, CA; it incorporates
a modified front end, resembling the regular Cadillac front clip for 1958. Doors are electrically activated by remote control. Gene
Winfield applied the Mint Pearl and Platinum Pearl paint job blended with Candy Emerald and highlighted in Ice Pearl. Bob Devine of

12/3/04 email - Hello Dave,
We recently purchased a triplex in Seattle "as is" including all of the contents; it was owned by an older neighbor of ours for the last 50
years. In the garage we found a 58 Cadillac that has apparently been there for at least 20 years. It was purchased by this gentlemen in
1963 and driven by him for an undetermined number of years prior to his starting to take it apart and restore it and then garaging it. I
have the title issued in 63 and original purchase receipt--the last registration tabs I can find for it are from 1986. It does not run and all of
the parts seem to be there but it's hard to say. Here's the info we pulled off of the metal plate in the engine compartment: Style# 58-6239,
Body# FW2879, Trim# 36 S, Paint# 29, ACC EH. We are located in the Fremont neighborhood of the city of Seattle. $200. or best offer.
Thanks Dave--appreciate the help!

I’d like to see a member near Seattle purchase this car and sell the parts
to other members at reasonable prices if it is not worth restoring. Dave
My sincere best wishes for good health and happiness in the New Year to all our members and friends. Dave B.
