The Fairport Packers Position by Marc Feder As our third week of football and cheerleading practices come to an end, we start to look forward towards the first game of our football season. And this seems like a good time to touch on the subject of sportsmanship and game conduct. Youth sports are supposed to be centered on the young athlete’s experience. Focus on learning the fundamentals of a sport, it’s basic techniques, and the strategy is all a part of the training experience for our children. There is also an element of learning how to succeed with grace and learn from mistakes in a positive way that assists in the maturation of our children that is necessary for their positive development. Within this context our football and cheerleading coaches promote strong sportsmanship and fair play to our athletes and the expectation from them and our organization is that all members of our teams, the members of the opposition’s team, and all officials are treated with the highest of respect. It has been with rare exception that I have had to intervene with one of our Fairport Packers athletes on this topic, and it has been even more rare that I have had to broach the subject with one of our families. I will say though that not all families in other towns are of the same mindset. Under these circumstances it is even more important for us to remember that we will only represent ourselves to the highest standard possible. So I ask that if you experience spectators at any venue who for whatever reason have lost perspective, please do not engage these people but find one of the Fairport Packers directors or Executive Board members. Other RYFC directors and presidents have a strong stake in fair play and sportsmanship, and we are able to address concerns regarding spectator behavior directly with them. This picture was sent to me the near the end of this year’s soccer season, and I thought it a good reminder for all of us going forward. I would only add #6: “Enjoy the Game!” Marc Feder is the President of the Fairport Packers and can be reached at [email protected] PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SUPER SPONSORS! “Helping You Create Customized Events with Ease” 585-248-2660 www.burgundybasin.com
