Orange and Black paint immediately identify this
one as a factory custom, but a whole host of FatBook bolt-ons complete the job Harley-Davidson
started. Those are the new S&S 4-inch Race Tour
mufflers peeking out under the saddlebags.
EAGLE PLUS!
TAKING HARLEY’S FACTORY-CUSTOM
TO THE NEXT LEVEL
Drag Specialties central region manager
Rob Bluma knows what’s available to make a cool,
coordinated ride, including Performance Machine’s
Dixon wheels and the Machine Tech fork sliders
and legs dramatically changed the look up front.
W
ell, the FatBook has come through again by
helping make a cool bike a whole lot cooler.
No surprise, really. This project involved a
factory custom as the starting point, a CVO
Screamin’ Eagle Road Glide. Sure, this 2009 Glide is still
wearing its signature orange and black paint job; it’s still
unmistakably a CVO. But this one’s better looking, better
running and better riding than ever.
Nothing complicated or overly priced here. It’s just a Klock Werks
12-inch windshield and Paul Yaffe’s Scoowl fairing extension,
two more easy bolt-ons that up the custom appeal.
Rob Bluma, Drag Specialties’ Central Region Sales Manager,
took that factory custom to the next level. He turned that
bike into a head turner in its own right, a standout anywhere. And it all happened with FatBook bolt-ons. “I bought
the bike a year ago,” Rob says. “I got a great deal on it and
was up for the challenge. No one has spent much time
customizing a CVO Screamin’ Eagle, but I just knew I could
make one better than it originally was.”

This one goes as well as it shows. Revolution Performance went
through the engine top-to-bottom. It’s got a 113-inch package,
the complete Feuling timing chest upgrade, Feuling injectors,
cylinder head work and S&S Powertune Duals.
Carl Brouhard Designs Elite Driver
floorboards and the matching heeltoe shift levers now take care of the
left-side controls. All that’s matched
with the Brouhard pieces for the
brakes and the passenger pegs.
That’s certainly a tall order. This is a pretty well customized
bike straight from the factory. Which isn’t to say that has to
be the end of things, and for Rob it was just a beginning. A
guy with an obvious eye for what works, he spent 15 years at
Suburban Motors Harley-Davidson prior to joining the Drag
Specialties team five years ago. That Suburban name should
ring a bell, the dealership is responsible for quite a few
FatBook project bikes and Rob got to see first-hand what’s
involved, start to finish, in a successful makeover. Most
times, he says, it happens right at the start with a solid plan.
“When I began this one,” Rob adds, “my thought was to try
carrying three different finishes throughout the bike, but
make them blend and flow together.” That wouldn’t be easy.
Most often you’ll see a theme being all black, all chrome,
maybe all paint. But, since this bike left the factory with
Harley’s custom granite-finished motor Rob figured he’d
work off that and mix in some chrome, some black and some
painted finishes — all the while keeping that iconic CVO
paint job. “I was hoping to pull it all together into a clean,
coherent look,” he says, and he did.
As is always the case with a makeover, choosing what to
use and what to leave behind requires some careful FatBook selections. It’s easy to go overboard, and it’s usually
a safe bet to stick with one or two vendors for the biggest,
most prominent bolt-ons. This time, however, things were
a bit different.
“By the time I was through, I couldn’t believe how many
different vendors I’d actually gotten parts from,” he says.
Credit the savvy, and matching, selections to Rob’s decades
of experience at all this. The accompanying Build Sheet has
the particulars outlining Rob’s choices, but a quick rundown
begins with a switch to Performance Machine Dixon wheels,
a 21 up front, Performance Machine fork legs and sliders,
a full selection of floorboards, pegs and levers from Carl
Brouhard Designs, Arlen Ness modular handlebars, a Drag
A custom order Drag Specialties Predator 2-Up
seat and color-matched Arlen Ness Modular
handlebar highlight the new riding position.
Rob upgraded the audio with a full
Biketronics amp/radio/speaker kit.
Those popular Performance Machine Dixon wheels
are matched here with the Dixon rotors, the
company’s 4-piston calipers and Metzeler
ME880 120/70-21 rubber up front.

There’s a Progressive Suspension Monotube fork cartridge kit in the front end, out back it’s now Legend
Suspension’s damping-adjustable REVO-A 12-inch Coil Shocks.
2009 Harley-Davidson CVO Road Glide FLTSER3

PART # QUANTITY DESCRIPTION
Little changes that make a big difference — bolt-ons include Performance
Machine’s Vision Blade mirrors, Roland
Sands Design Tracker grips and a Drag/
Hotop Design fairing pocket liner kit.
Specialties seat and plenty of important bits from Roland Sands
Design, Yaffe, Custom Dynamics, Klock Werks, and Biketronics for
the audio upgrade.
And it wasn’t all just cosmetics for this upgraded CVO. To boost
performance Rob had Revolution Performance go through the
engine top-to-bottom, fitting in one of their 113-inch packages
along with a complete Feuling timing camchest upgrade, Feuling
injectors, S&S Powertune dual headers, and the new 4-inch Race
Tour mufflers with Thruster end caps. To sharpen up the ride and
handling the rear suspension is now Legend’s REVO-A, up front it’s
a Progressive Suspension Monotube fork cartridge kit.
Rob started all this just after Sturgis last year, finishing up just in
time for Sturgis 2015. And showing, once again, what’s possible
with the FatBook — even when you’re starting with a custom. ■
