ur local pet shops and breeders are a very important part of the tropical fish hobby. They’re there when you need immediate help -medications, live foods, or a replacement part for a filter. You can check out the fish you’re interested in at the store in person; often the
shops will special order fish for you. Most will do free water checks for you and most all give discounts to our members. They want
you to succeed in the hobby so you remain their customer, and we want them to succeed in their businesses. Whenever you can, buy

ollowing are just a few excerpts from Heiko’s report on
the condition of the Amazon and the fish and wild life
that depend on it.
Heiko Bleher reports on an environmental disaster
in the Amazon region that he says is far worse than we have
been led to believe.
******
There are millions of freshwater fish dead – probably billions. Just a few years back I watched over two billion
catfishes, members of all 10 known Amazon catfish families,
during a spawning migration in the Tefé region, on a river
stretch of less than 25km, which is dried up now.
F
its water level in the last 10 years. The high plateau of Tibet,
and The Pamirs, the Top of the World is turning into desert
land, as has already happened in Central Asia, where the
fourth largest freshwater lake on earth, the Aral with 148
extinct fish species, has dried up completely.
******
With all of these facts, can there be still anyone still
asking why we are having this environmental disaster in the
Amazon? I hope that Man wakes up before it is really too late...
Breed your aquarium fish and take care of them!
Editors note:
We hope that people wake up to these reports also!

At the lower Rio Negro, the largest freshwater river in the world, one can
walk across it. The thousands of recreios, the only transport method to
move people and supplies to the most remote areas, are sitting on dry land.
******
Why are we having this unbelievable disaster, this
dryness? The media claims El Nino, CO2, the continuous
deforestation in the Amazon and other regions. The fact is that global
warming has, from what I have seen during the last decade
while doing research in aquatic habitats around the globe,
increased by at least tenfold and I think that global warming
is 100 times worse than what we are told. And it's not just
the Amazon River...
I just came back from India doing research in 50
larger lakes in the Northwest – not a single one of these had
one drop of water - but on today's Google satellite maps they
do (the photographs date from 2003, I found out...)

THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
I
t’s Happy Holidays time!
Pat Donston of Absolutely Fish did
an outstanding job of bringing the
turkey home! Pat provided a fantastic
lecture and slide presentation on “Reef
Care Conflicts! Who’s Right?” Pat
corrected all the myths and false reports
that marine and reef aquarists had for
years. There are differences between
reef aquariums and marine fish aquariums.
Pat donated a bunch of great chemicals
for both types for our audience (freshwater and marine) to
everyone's delight. Pat also brought livestock donations and
discount coupons for in-attendance members only. So in
addition to the very generous 20% discount to card carrying
members, he also provided extra cash-off coupons. WOW,
what a deal!
Our fresh and marine auction provided many
discounted items for our audience. Not only was there
livestock going at great savings, but there were aquariums,
stands and related equipment at huge savings. Great bargains
were had by all. It was a very enjoyable evening! A special
note of thanks to all individual and businesses that donated
to our event; their names and locations will be published
elsewhere in this Bulletin.
We want to wish all of our members the best for the
holiday season. Our next event is our Holiday Party on
December 10. As you all know by now, everyone brings
food, dessert, soda or seltzers for the party. (Alcoholic
beverages are not allowed.) Attendees must bring something
or pay $10 each at the door. We expect Katz’s Deli to provide their
mouth watering treats. So come and bring family to YOUR
holiday party. Please provide a list of what food, dessert or
beverages you plan to bring, to Marie Licciardello at
718 377 7749.
Our January speaker will be Rit Forcier, the
Chairman of the American Livebearers Association. Rit’s topic
for the evening will be “3 Weeks Collecting Fish in Mexico.”
This will be a great presentation and a wonderful educational
experience, so come on down and bring a friend.
I am asking for your help and support. If you want
to see different speakers or try different things, please let
me know. The elected officials of the Brooklyn Aquarium
Society are here to serve YOU! Please let us know what you
want and why. It would be helpful to everyone.
For more info, please call our new and improved
BAS Hotline at (718) 837-4455, or visit our NEW website at
WWW.BROOKLYNAQUARIUMSOCIETY.ORG.
On a more personal note - This is your club and we
are looking for interested and helpful members to participate. Any member who desires to attend a Board meeting,
which are held at the Education Center of the New York
Aquarium on the 1st Friday of the month, please notify me
at (718) 238-1792 by the Tuesday previous to the meeting.

HOLIDAY PARTY
T
he annual BAS holiday party
is a time-honored tradition
and this year it will be held on
December 10th. At the end of this
year, we’ll be 99 years old and looking
forward to 2011 when we’ll be 100
years old. So this is a very special
holiday get together.
As usual, there’ll be no speakers, no
auctions, just tons of great food and, as
in past years, the BAS supplies a roast
turkey and all the trimmings, baked
hams, desserts, coffee and soda.
Our talented members bring their favorite
dishes and desserts, home baked pies and
cakes, delicious hot dishes ranging from
pasta, baked chicken, sausage and peppers, delicious salads, plus an array of
different ethnic foods, not to forget a fabulous donation of
deli food from New York's most famous deli, Katz’s. Don’t
forget to stop at the front table to let us know what your
name is and what dish you brought.
It’s a sit-down dinner with your family, friends and
significant others. The doors open at 7:30pm and dinner
starts at 8pm. So please wait until we open the serving
tables; we need time to set up all the arriving dishes on the
tables. If you jump the line, you may miss some fantastic
dishes, and for sure you don’t want to do that!
We also play fish bingo with aquarium-related
prizes and we honor members who have served the Society
for the past year with awards and also members who have
written articles for Aquatica with book awards.
If you've ever been to our holiday bashes, you know
what to expect. Great food and fun! If you're new to the
Society, then you have a treat in store. Mark your calendar
now, December 10th, and start thinking of the dish you're
going to donate to the party.
The party is held at the Education Hall of the NY
Aquarium. All food donations are always acknowledged in
the BAS Bulletin. All the family is welcome.

members. If you have an Email address, please send it to Joe
Graffagnino at [email protected]. For those who are not
on line we are will still mail issues to those members. The change
over will start in January 2011. Times are changing and we have to
change with them. The money saved will be used for events, trips
