I’d like to open by talking a bit about technology, which has become a bit of an overused
word these days. I’ve seen T.V. ads that espouse technology in everything from breakfast food to children’s toys! But where motorcycles are concerned, it really does apply.
This year I sold my beloved 2003 Tiger 955i and bought a new Tiger Explorer 1200.
Why? Well, here’s that word again, technology. The build quality, ride quality and just
plain rideability is so vastly improved. Don’t get me wrong, my 955 could keep up with the best of them, but it’s
the way in which the new bike rides that’s so different. Everything is so much more solid, stable and controllable.
Things like “fly by wire” throttle, electronic cruise control, tire pressure monitoring systems, on board trip computers, anti-lock brakes, traction control and adjustable…..well, everything! Gas mileage in the 50’s while making 40
more horsepower than my old bike. It doesn’t burn oil and the bags don’t leak!!! So many things have changed in
just 12 years that it boggles the mind. If you haven’t looked at the new Triumphs for a few years, check them out.
It’s all pretty amazing! Frankly, with all the improvement, I can’t imagine what the future holds for our sport. But I
know I want to be a part of it just as long as my body will let me. Besides, the older I get the younger everyone
around me gets and spending time with you all, well, it just keeps me young at heart and moving forward. What’s
not to like about that!
Now let’s talk a bit about what’s coming in the New Year for us all. As you read this, Christmas is over and some
of you may be nursing a bit of a hangover after ringing in the New Year. But if you were on a Triumph, 2015 was
a year worth celebrating for sure. The Triumph Tiger Troop completed its first full year of rides as published in our
ride booklet. TRAP hosted several events and three very successful multi-day rides, including a new location for
the Summer Scorcher that saw its largest attendance ever! I think that the successes of 2015 gives promise for
what’s to come in 2016 for us all. And so many things are already on the schedule! Soren is hard at work setting
up events, starting as early as this winter. He has a movie night scheduled at Cascade Triumph and some go-cart
races for us just to keep our “need for speed” in tune while the rain falls all around us.
Not to be left out, the Tiger Troop has the 2016 ride booklet completed and will start riding rain or shine this
month! So many events are planned for us already this year. There will be a charity poker run next summer, day
rides, multi-day overnight rides, barbeques, campouts, seminars and tech sessions. If you can’t find something to
do in either T.R.A.P or T3 this year, there’s just no hope for you! But to speak seriously about this for a minute, I
really do hope you take part in our events. I’ve been riding street motorcycles for 35+ years and I can tell you that
the most fun I have had while doing so, is in the company of friends. I never tell stories about what a great time I
had someplace on my bike by myself. Nope, my stories always involve shared experiences. In fact, motorcycling
has truly been my life. Every friend I have, save one couple, either ride a motorcycle now, or have done so in the
past. Almost all of them I have met through our club, the Triumph Riders of Portland. So if you’re considering
coming to an event, or going on a ride, but are unsure of who you’ll
meet or what type of people you’ll interact with, I can assure you that
they will be happy fun loving people who will welcome you. Kate
Stoller, our Tiger Troop leader, Soren Winslow, our TRAP leader,
and I would like nothing more than for you to approach us and introduce yourself. We’d love to meet you and give you the nickel tour.

The end of 2015 and the start of 2016 are here. My hope is that everyone has had a better motorcycle year in 2015 than they did in 2014 and will have an even better year in 2016!
The TRAP calendar for 2016 is pretty much firmed up. We have some exciting events going on
over the next couple months while we wait for the rain and cold to subside and riding becomes
enjoyable again.
On January 16th at 5:30 PM, we have our Annual TRAP Night at the Movies as we watch the motorcycle
adventure of John Doe and Adam Horovitz as they run across a whole bunch of other characters in Roadside Prophets.
I know you can ride motorcycles, but how well and how fast can you navigate a tight and twisty quarter mile track on four
small wheels with speeds up to 40mph? February 21st at 11:00 AM, you’ll get a chance to find out at Sykart Indoor Racing
Center in Tigard, Oregon. The cost per race is $15 per person. Plan on racing three times. Not only will we be
having fun racing against each other, but we will also have a few awards to give out.

details on upcoming events. Speaking of Rat-Pack.com, when was the last time you updated your profile? Now is a good

Over the next 10 months, while you are out and about on your Triumph, take pictures! We will be putting together a TRAP
calendar for 2017. In October we will decide on the best photos to include in the calendar. The rules are simple; it needs to
be a photo that features your Triumph motorcycle and be a photo taken in 2016. Stay tuned for details on how to submit your
photos.

It’s an honor to practice my craft on Triumphs and other bikes where

TIGER TROOP QUARTERLY TIDBITS
FOURTH QUARTER OF 2015
This last quarter of the year rode by quickly. That, however, did not stop us from
enjoying our rides thoroughly! It also served as a milestone for our group; it was in this quarter that
we completed our first planned ride booklet. Reminiscing over the past year- we travelled some
amazing roads, had lots of opportunity
for gaining and/or honing skills, and
learned more about other individual
riders (which community to us is the lifeblood).
T3 HEADS TO DETROIT LAKE
October: This month's ride lead us North into Washington and out
on Highway 14. Our destination - Trout Lake. Rain was forecasted,
however, we were fortunate enough to catch a break and even get
into some sunny patches. Between Carson and White Salmon we
headed up a valley that was a direct route to the City of Trout Lake.
We made a jaunt out to the ice caves (but couldn't locate the turn)
and we were all okay with that as it was lunch time. We rode back
towards the Columbia River and ate lunch at a fantastic pub house
and brewery. Heading back into the metro area we were greeted by
some rain, but upon arrival were already dry. This route offered
amazing views of the fall season leaves and Mount Adams. It is well
worth a "redo"!!
November: Listed as our "backyard ride" this route is one of our
shorter rides that takes us into some small communities outside of
the urban growth boundary. We cautiously watched the forecast, as
the weather had been a mix of cold and rain. As riders, on all
makes arrived, we determined that Bald Peak Road was clear and
headed out and over. We broke for a meal at the Outpost
Restaurant in Yamhill then headed North on Hwy 47 into Forest
Grove. Once back at the shop we gathered with other riders, told
stories, enjoyed some coffee, and may have had a warm cookie (or
two).
T3 GROUP
December: This ride was deliberately left
off so we could attend the Holiday Open
House at the shop. Santa was too much
fun!
January not only marked the new year, but
also the start of a new ride booklet. Messages will continue to be emailed, texted, and routed via

Falloon’s book The Complete Book of Classic and Modern Triumph Motorcycles:
1937-Today. Falloon has compiled an impressive collection of pictures and information. “The pictures are what make the book,” according to reviewer Clement
Salvadori, including over 500 illustrations that will “make any Trumpet fan’s heart
beat a little faster.”
If you watch Travel Channel’s Expedition Unknown, you may
have noticed a pristine 1968 Triumph Bonneville featured in
the recent “The Real Robin Hood” episode. Host Josh Gates
rides the vintage Bonnie from London to Nottingham to investigate the legend of Robin Hood. “My sweet ride through the
English countryside is older than I am,” notes Gates. “This is a
1968 Triumph Bonneville – 650 cc’s – this is the bike that I
dream about when I go to sleep at night!”
Fans of the hit AMC television show, “The Walking
Dead,” may already know about star Norman
Reedus’ affinity for Triumph motorcycles. His character in the zombie-themed drama rides a custom Triumph chopper, and Reedus often rides his own Triumph Scrambler to the set during filming. Now
NYDailyNews.com is reporting Reedus will host a
new series on AMC, Riding With Norman Reedus,
that will feature the actor traveling the country on his
bike and interviewing collectors, mechanics, and motorcycle craftsmen. The series is set to premiere this
year.
If you’ve seen the latest issue of Motorcyclist magazine, we’re sure you
noticed the beautiful new Triumph Thruxton R featured prominently on the cover! In the December/January 2016 issue’s cover story, entitled “A Classic Reborn,” Motorcyclist Editor-In-Chief Marc Cook takes a close look at the new
Bonneville models and speaks with Triumph engineers about their extensive development. Says Cook, “We’re more than eager to get our hands on the new
Bonneville, especially the up-spec Thruxton R…Cool looking and
potentially a hoot to ride: Where do we sign up?”

Triumph’s much anticipated unveiling of the allnew Speed Triple S and Speed Triple R models
was extensively covered in numerous motorcycle
publications, including Cycle World, Canada MotoGuide, Roadracing World and Cycle News. While
Canada MotoGuide likes the new model’s sophistication achieved through a host of “electronic wizardry,” Cycle World praises the Speed Triple’s updated styling saying, “the entire machine simply
looks more refined, a little more Daniel-Craigmenacing-in-a-bespoke-suit rather than JasonStratham-brutal-in-a-T-shirt.”
Gear Patrol has released their GP100 list, an annual salute to
“the hundred best products on earth.” The 2015 Triumph Tiger
800 XCx was named to the exclusive list, one of only three motorcycles to make the cut. They laud the Triumph for superseding BMW at the top of the highly competitive adventure bike
category, saying “Triumph not only hits the Bavarians’ mark, it
pushes the standard to a whole other level.” They also cite the
Tiger’s improved off-road prowess now matching its already
“impeccable on-road manners” to create “a true dual-sport
identity that all but conquers what physics shouldn’t allow.”
Triumph’s announcement of an all-new Tiger Explorer made waves in the moto-world,
garnering global press attention from such outlets as Motorcyclist, MCN, Sport Rider, MotoUSA.com and Roadracing World. Featuring the
most powerful engine in the adventure class and
a
host
of
advanced,
rider-focused
technology including electronically adjustable
semi-active suspension and cornering-optimized
ABS and Traction Control, the new Tiger Explorer models allow “riders to tailor their desired adventure,
to
go
anywhere
and
everywhere from the daily commute to the corners of the earth.” The new 2016 Explorers will
arrive at Triumph retailers in June.
