Dear Members,
This issue of Member News features our annual report on Museum
of New Mexico Foundation membership, development and retail
activities for fiscal year 2013–14, which ended June 30. Our focus
here is on the meaningful and vitally important impact that
our trustees, donors and members have on the Museum of New
Mexico system.
On the following pages, you will see this impact detailed for each
state museum in Santa Fe, the statewide New Mexico Historic
Sites and the Office of Archeological Studies. As always, we
honor the tremendous accomplishments made by our trustees
and development teams in securing support for our cultural
institutions through our Director’s Leadership and Exhibitions
Development funds.
You will also read about our Fund for Museum Education, which
represents a block grant in support of the outstanding educational
programming offered by the Museum of New Mexico divisions.
These programs reach 325,000 visitors to our cultural and historical
institutions annually, plus more than 40,000 K–12 students and
teachers in all 33 New Mexico counties.
We are delighted to report on strong sales this fiscal year in the five
museum shops operated by the Foundation. In addition to generating earned revenue that supports our state-run museums, these
shops enhance the visitor experience with beautiful selections of
exhibition-inspired items.
Finally, we recognize the wonderful donors, individuals and
businesses that have provided support for our institutions during
the fiscal year. Your impact on the art, culture and history of
New Mexico is without parallel, and we are deeply honored by
your generosity.

The
2013 14
Year in
Review

The Museum of New Mexico Foundation acknowledges and thanks
the thousands of generous donors and members who contributed
$5.5 million to support our four museums in Santa Fe, seven statewide historic sites and the Office of Archaeological Studies during the
2013–14 fiscal year.
Your critical funding enabled our cultural institutions to present lively exhibitions and hundreds of
award-winning educational initiatives and public
outreach programs to more than 325,000 visitors and
more than 40,000 schoolchildren statewide.

“Private support is imperative to the success of our
cultural institutions,” says Museum of New Mexico
Foundation President/CEO Jamie Clements, noting
that state monies support only building operations and staff salaries. “Funding for the heart of
the museums, including exhibitions and public
programming, is paid for by private supporters.”
Following is a summary of how your generous
membership contributions and gifts to museum
education programs and exhibitions helped fulfill
the missions of our world-class institutions between
July 1, 2013, and June 30, 2014.
New Mexico Museum of Art
The New Mexico Museum of Art had a stellar year,
thanks to the numerous donors who together contributed $165,000 to fund a dynamic schedule of thoughtprovoking exhibitions and related programming.
Renaissance to Goya: Prints and Drawings from
Spain made its only North American showing at
the museum. On loan from the esteemed British
Museum, the exhibition presented 132 prints and
drawings, offering visitors a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity to gain insight into four centuries of
Spain’s visual history and culture. The museum
welcomed 33,000 visitors during the show’s run,
tripling average monthly attendance and increasing
sales in the museum shop.

The museum also honored its mission to showcase
the art of the Southwest and its extensive permanent
collection. Other exhibition highlights included
Spotlight on Gustave Baumann; Southwestern Allure:
The Art of the Santa Fe Art Colony; Shiprock to Mont St.
Michel: Photographs by William Clift; and Local Color:
Judy Chicago in New Mexico 1984–2014.
Looking ahead, the museum is planning for its
centennial anniversary in 2017. Working with the
consulting firm Lord Cultural Resources, museum
leaders are planning a community-wide celebration
and envisioning the next 100 years at the museum.
“Private donations are paramount to the vitality
and longevity of the museum,” says director Mary
Kershaw. “I look forward to seeing our members
and donors as they experience the exhibitions and
Museum of Indian Arts and Culture
Under the leadership of director Della Warrior,
the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture also had a
tremendous year. Private donations increased, most
notably through the $50,000 Hutson-Wiley and
Echevarria Foundation challenge grant, which
supports museum education and exhibition-related
programs. The grant, which has been renewed for the
2014–15 fiscal year, inspired many to give to the Exhibitions Development Fund, with donations matching
the full $50,000.
The museum’s annual marquee fundraiser, Native
Treasures: Indian Arts Festival, reached $500,000 in
sales. Seventy-five percent of proceeds benefitted the
200 participating Native artists, with the remaining
25 percent supporting the museum.
“These fundraising accomplishments have created
a buzz,” says Warrior. “Private funds allow us to
provide additional public programming and a more
robust exhibition schedule. We could not have realized these activities without our invaluable donors.”

Museum education programs and interactives
provided enriching learning experiences for children
and adults. Notable examples include New Mexico
Art Tells New Mexico History, a free online resource;
Family Fun Days that encourage parents and children to explore the museum together; and the
beloved annual holiday performances of the Gustave
Baumann Marionettes.
participate in the educational programs they so
generously support.”
The museum’s featured exhibitions this year included
Heartbeat: Music of the Native Southwest; They Wove
for Horses: Diné Saddle Blankets; Native American
Portraits: Point of Inquiry; and the blockbuster
Turquoise, Water, Sky: The Stone and Its Meaning.
Outstanding strides were also made in education and
outreach programs as students created exhibitioninspired short films and conducted research using
the museum archives. Native students also engaged
with staff to learn about museum careers.
Looking ahead, an interpretive master plan is under
way at the museum. Led by the acclaimed firm Gallagher & Associates, the plan will address comprehensive updates to the permanent exhibition Here, Now
and Always.
“We have so much to look forward to in the
coming year,” adds Warrior. “I am very proud of
our accomplishments and I thank our donors for
helping advance and promote Native arts, culture
and history.”
Museum of International Folk Art
Donors this year contributed $107,000 to the
museum’s Exhibitions Development and Director’s
Leadership funds. These directly supported a range
of engaging and popular exhibitions, including Tako
Kichi: Kite Crazy in Japan; Brasil & Arte Popular;
Wooden Menagerie: Made in New Mexico; and
Between Two Worlds: Folk Artists Reflect on the Immigrant Experience.
The exhibition-inspired programming of the museum’s award-winning educational programs reached
thousands of schoolchildren through Folk Art to
Go!, now in its 25th year, and the Ames After-School
Program, funded by the Ames Family Foundation. The museum’s play area was transformed to
a colorful and whimsical Tree of Life activity area,
partially funded by the Friends of Folk Art and the
International Folk Art Foundation.

Programs and Funds

Along with the state of New Mexico, the Foundation plays a vital role in the funding of the Museum of New
Mexico system. Donor contributions during the 2013–14 fiscal year impacted the museums, historic sites
and Office of Archaeological Studies through the following funds and programs:
•Membership Programs $1.4 million
•General membership $689,564
•The Circles $655,013
•Business Council $67,131
•Exhibitions Development Fund $345,840
•Director’s Leadership Fund $347,221
•Legacy Society $2.58 million (promised
and realized)
•Endowments $21 million
•Fund for Museum Education $215,933
•Museum Gifts $1.5 million
•Museum Shops and Licensing $393,000
museumfoundation.org5
Expansion of the museum’s collections storage
space also got under way and is expected to increase
the museum’s holding capacity by 18 percent by
spring 2015. Other long-term goals for the museum,
including the development of a strategic plan for a
museum textile center, also gained steam.
“I appreciate our donors’ support, which allows us
to encourage visitors to interact with folk art and
to promote cultural understanding,” says director
Marsha Bol. “We have much to celebrate from 2014
and a lot to look forward to in 2015.”
New Mexico History Museum/
Palace of the Governors
While the museum celebrated its fifth birthday in
May 2014, donors this year provided nearly $250,000
to support exhibitions, public programs and educational initiatives.
“Donor support means a lot to the New Mexico
History Museum, our residents and visitors,”
says interim director Jon Hunner. “Private donations make it possible for us to set a 21st-century
museum standard.”
The museum opened exhibitions that illustrate the
diverse history and influences that intersect in New
Mexico, including Donald Woodman: Transformed
by New Mexico; Poetics of Light: Pinhole Photography;
Toys and Games: A New Mexico Childhood; and
Painting the Divine: Images of Mary in the New World.
A series of education programs, primarily funded
by the Foundation’s Fund for Museum Education,
were an invaluable resource to students and teachers
alike. These programs act as an extension of the
classroom, particularly for large numbers of underserved youth from rural areas of the state.
Various other museum accomplishments earned
well-deserved accolades. Los Compadres del Palacio,
the museum’s support group, received the New
Mexico Heritage Preservation Award for leading the
Palace of the Governors’ window restoration project.
Palace Press Director Tom Leech will be honored
with the Santa Fe Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the
Arts in 2015.
“We look forward to achieving much more together,”
says Hunner.
New Mexico Historic Sites
As hubs of living history, the seven New Mexico
Historic Sites commemorate important New Mexico
moments and events.
Donors understood the importance of preserving
these sites this year, contributing more than $40,000
through the Exhibitions Development and Director’s
Leadership funds.
“The preservation of these sites is vital to telling
the history of our state.” says sites director Richard
Sims. “I hope our donors will continue to step up to
support them.”
Currently drawing more than 80,000 visitors each
year, the historic sites and their public outreach
initiatives reach nearly every corner of New Mexico.
Sims says the sites are uniquely positioned for
building additional support through innovative exhibitions, live demonstrations and public programs,
and engaging educational activities.
With additional funding, for example, a number of
popular programs can be continued. Among these
are the pueblo art project at Jemez Historic Site,
which showcases Native art and features evolving
Shops and Licensing
The Foundation’s five museum
shops and two online stores
generated more than $2.73 million
in sales, marking a five-year high.
The Foundation’s licensing
program received $199,000 in
royalties and earned $58,000 in
net revenue.

exhibitions; Fiesta of Cultures, an annual celebration
of local traditions and craft demonstrations at Coronado Historic Site; and Frontier Days, which feature
historical reenactments.

Working with the Foundation, Sims is currently
hosting events at each site to inspire advocacy
among legislators and community members that
will lead to increased funding support. Another
priority is to grow support for educational offerings at the sites through the Foundation’s Fund for
Museum Education.
“The greatest strength of our historic sites is the deep
heritage of our multicultural state,” Sims explains.
“The true heritage keepers are the people of New
Mexico. It is up to our supporters to keep the sites
and their histories alive.”
Office of Archaeological Studies
The Office of Archaeological Studies (OAS) and
Museum of New Mexico Conservation Department
received the largest single gift to the Foundation
from Dr. Don Pierce, who bequeathed the majority
of his estate, estimated in excess of $1.7 million, for
the purpose of increasing the analytic capacity of the
two organizations.
OAS also enjoyed more than $68,000 in support from
Friends of Archaeology (FOA) donors, grants and
events. FOA provides opportunities for Foundation
members to connect in meaningful ways to the state’s
diverse history through archaeology. More than 60
educational outreach programs supported by the
Foundation touched 19 New Mexico counties and
more than 12,000 people, among them 5,000 children.
“OAS is a not-for-profit archaeological enterprise that
has attracted some of the best archaeologists in New
Mexico who work from project to project, contract to
contract,” says director Eric Blinman. “All research
that can’t be embedded within our clients’ projects
has to be supported by outside funding, most of
which is provided by or through the Foundation. This
private support is the single most important mechanism for putting the knowledge and expertise of the
OAS staff to work for education and for synthesis of
the unique record of New Mexico’s past.”

The Legacy Society
As of June 30, 2014
The Legacy Society recognizes forward-thinking
donors who have made an estate gift to sustain our
cultural institutions in the future. An estate gift can
be in the form of a living will or living trust, an IRA,
gift annuity, charitable trust or other arrangement.
Collectively, 191 donors have established over $43
million in promised and realized gifts.
Leaving Your Legacy
Planned gifts are designed to unite your
personal philanthropic and financial goals.
Some planned gifts, such as bequests, require
no current outlay of funds. Other planned
gifts, including the charitable gift annuity,
make it possible to support our work, enjoy a
tax deduction and receive a lifetime income.
Regardless of the type of planned gift you
choose, your support will make a difference for
years to come.
Please let us know if you have designated a
Museum of New Mexico division or the Museum
of New Mexico Foundation in your planned gift.
We want to honor your foresight and generosity
during your lifetime and provide the recognition
you deserve.

Learning about New Mexico’s
Art, History and Culture
Fund for Museum Education
This year, more than 325,000 children and adults will
visit our four museums in Santa Fe and seven historic
sites statewide to learn more about New Mexico’s rich
history and multicultural peoples and to experience
our world-renowned art.
The Fund for Museum Education, an annual Foundation initiative, ensures that every visitor to our
cultural institutions will benefit from dynamic
educational programs and initiatives that accompany division exhibitions and public programming.
Gifts to the Fund ensure that more than 40,000
schoolchildren from across New Mexico benefit from
engaging outreach initiatives, museum visits and
complementary curriculum — all at no cost.
As centers of lifelong learning, the service of
providing visitors with unique, thought-provoking,
and comprehensive educational experiences is a
top priority for our division directors, curators and
education specialists.
“The educator is the bridge between the exhibitions
and the public,” says New Mexico Museum of Art
Curator of Education Ellen Zieselman. “It is our job
to provide the means for visitors to enjoy, understand
and experience the thoughts behind the artworks
and exhibitions.”
From exhibition label text to docent tour experiences,
lectures, in-gallery videos and printed gallery guides,
Zieselman says, “Every tool in our toolbox is planned
to enhance the visitor’s experience of the galleries
and the museum. The impact of every private gift to
the Fund for Museum Education is far-reaching and
long-lasting.”
Make your gift to the Fund for Museum
Education one of the following three ways:

and magnificent culture, one which endures to the
present day. Nowhere is this more colorful than
in the incomparable arts, crafts and textiles of the
Chiapas region. Handcrafted by cooperatives in this
fertile valley surrounded by mountains, women in
this area use recycled materials to create charming
