One part of The Foundation of LDBC– What does it mean to you?
There have been a lot of questions over the years regarding the camp flag and what it all means. Here
is a summary that one of our alumni found and sent in. May be a little hard to read but we all remember what it all stands for anyway, right?!?!

Log on to www.lakedelawareboyscamp.com and discover a whole new look to
the Camp website. Along with our new camp brochure these revamped tools,
with your help, will boost camper recruitment. So don’t hesitate to refer potential
campers and their parents to our new website and contact Camp Secretary Laurie
Gullow at [email protected] or 607-832-4451 to get new camp brochures to distribute to potential campers from church, school etc. Many thanks to Jim
McQuade ’86 for leading the effort to redesign the website and for generously
funding the project; and to In House Graphic Design for doing the redesign and
for their patience with our many revisions; and to Pete McElligott ’86 for administering our old website for many years! And thank you to Jim Widman’85 for
redesigning the camp brochure which we hope you will also use to spread the
word about LDBC!
Board Profile: Harold Turner
Harold has been an LDAA board member for the
last five years. Together with fellow board member
Dan DeNose, Harold has actively encouraged
younger grads to become active in LDAA and even
rented a van to drive a group of recent grads up to
camp for Work Weekend. Here is what he has to
say about LDBC:
“I remember being a 9 year-old 4th grader at Newark
Boys Chorus School and hearing about this place in
the woods where kids go for 5 weeks, away from
home, TV, and dare I say- civilization. It would be
exciting to go from my home city of Newark, NJ to
the Catskills for this experience. My mother said no. The following year, I pleaded
and pleaded some more. It was successful because 6 years after that, I graduated
captain of the camp’s best company!!
My college summers were spent as a member of the tactical staff where I learned a
great deal about myself, the other side of the company street, and saw how impactful camp could be to kids- just as it had done for me. My summertime love of
working with kids parlayed itself into a career in education. I now live & teach in
Harlem, NY.
Lake Delaware Boys Camp is transformative. It allows kids, from all backgrounds,
to experience community, love, a sense of belonging, and brotherhood. Those sentiments travel with you wherever you go and with whomever you meet. The title of
a song from one of my favorite musicals- The Color Purple-says it perfectly; this
place is, simply put: “Too Beautiful for Words.”

From your President...
A word from your president…
With each visit to Camp, I am amazed at how much LDBC has stood the test of time. 107 years after Robert
L. Gerry purchased a neighboring farm and erected a few simple buildings to start a summer camp, we continue to fulfill our original mission of providing a character building summer for boys from economically challenged families. While our mission has not changed, some of our buildings have. Since reopening in 1999,
with your support, we have built a new colonel’s cottage, perch, shower house and chaplain’s cottage. We’ve
also stabilized St. Joseph’s Chapel with a new floor and roof, as well as restoring the organ. While our field
house is as sturdy as ever, planning for the future requires us to focus on the remaining two buildings that have
received little attention since erected in 1912: the mess hall and armory. Of the two, the mess hall is a key
building at Camp, getting more use than any other building. Over a century of 100+ boys stomping during
meals, as well as constant erosion have taken their toll. The LDBC board has begun the process of exploring
options to address this situation and more information will be forthcoming when decisions are made concerning a course of action.

Camp Nurse– Sue (Arruda) Mook
We want to congratulate Sue (Arruda)
Mook, on her retirement as Camp nurse, a
position she has held since 2005. She came
to LDBC with her three young children
Jocelyn, Joseph and Abby, after having
suffered the loss of her beloved husband
Bill. LDBC was a new adventure for them,
and growing up at LDBC became a wonderful part of their lives.
Sue is a superb health care professional and
she has been the ideal nurse for LDBC.
The New York State Department of Health,
and the American Camp Association, which
both inspect and evaluate camp have told us
how lucky we are to have Sue. She knows
and understands what LDBC is all about,
and cares for each of our campers.
While we wish she had stayed at LDBC as
long as Camp Nurse Morrison, whom many of you remember, Sue recently accepted a full time position and
can no longer commit to being with us the whole summer. Her connection to Camp continues through her son
Joseph, who graduates this year and her daughter Jocelyn who will be a member of the Kitchen Staff. Our new
Camp nurse will be Inger Rothpearl, who like Sue is a school nurse, and also a parishioner of St. Peter’s Church
in Geneva, New York where Colonel Adams is rector.
Stand in the Gap
The LDBC Code of Discipline is based on positive motivation.
A key part of that positive motivation is the “Stand in the Gap”
shirt. This award is based on the Bible verse Ezekiel 22:30: “I
sought a man among them, that would build up the wall, and
stand in the gap before me for the land.”
The award recognizes campers who make a great effort, and
whose actions fill a need to build camp. It may be given to an
older boy who is observed to be kind and helpful to a younger
camper. It may be someone who has been struggling a bit, and
has been making a real effort to succeed. It may be given to
someone who steps up without being asked to do a job which
must be done, or it may be given to a boy who quietly builds
camp by his constant cooperation and cheerful attitude.
A different tac each day selects boys to receive a shirt, and
awards them at dinner in the Mess Hall. Each year the shirt is
a different color. We have 100 campers, and usually award only 25 shirts each year, so they are highly prized
and worn with pride. The Stand in the Gap awards were instituted in 2009, and are one reason for the great
spirit and pride amongst our campers at LDBC these days.
Thank You Ollie!
Every now and then a grad steps forward to make a special donation to Camp…one that spurs donations by others. After Grads Weekend this year, Ollie Nichols ’62 offered a $5,000 donation to be matched with new donors
to camp (those who had not donated in three years) or those who increased their 2014 donations by +25%.
Thank you to all who stepped up and met this match in full…and Thank You Ollie for this generous matching
donation!
Herb McGrail Recognized by the Boys Scouts of America
We are so proud to recognize long-time Scouter Herb McGrail,
who has now approved 1000 young men for the rank of Eagle. In
1980 he approved his first Eagle, his own son Herb (Butch)
McGrail from Troop 52. Yesterday, he approved Yanni A. from
Troop 106 for the rank of Eagle. Thank you, Herb, for your dedication and service to the youth of Suffolk County!
Help Recruit New Campers
Help keep LDBC strong by recruiting campers…we especially welcome all grad kids/grandkids to attend
LDBC…and their friends! Refer any potential camper family to the new camp website where they can find
the camper application www.lakedelawareboyscamp.com. For new camp brochures contact Camp Secretary
Laurie Gullow at [email protected] or (607) 832-4451.
From your General and Colonel
Dear Friends of LDBC,
It gives us pleasure to send greetings to the Lake Delaware Boys Camp family, and to report that 2015 was a
wonderful year at camp. There was great spirit and pride at LDBC last summer. We had an especially experienced and professional minded staff, and our graduating class of campers modeled to our younger boys a
great love of LDBC.
As we go about the work involved in preparing for the 2016 camp season—selecting staff, camper admissions process, State permits and inspections – we are expecting a sparkling upcoming season at LDBC. In
addition to the 2016 grad class of nineteen boys being one of the largest ever, it features boys of outstanding
talent and leadership skills. We are expecting amazing leadership and positive spirit from our battalion officers this summer!
By the way, if you speak to any campers or staff from 2015, you will hear them rave about the food; every
meal was a delight. Chef Eddie Madia will be returning this summer which will bring much happiness to all.
LDBC does no marketing, so we rely on people who know and understand camp to recruit for us. Please
consider boys you know who could benefit from the life changing experience of LDBC. The new LDBC
website provides a great introduction to camp.
We hope to see you at LDBC this summer.!
Warm wishes,
Jim and Sue Adams

Join the Emblem Society
Won’t you consider putting LDBC in your will? Through the efforts of board member Hank Huestis ’42 we
formed the Emblem Society to honor those generous grads who include Camp in their will. If you have made this
commitment and your name does not appear on this list, please contact Camp Secretary Laurie Gullow at 607-8324451 or [email protected] so we can recognize your generosity. Since reopening in 1999, we’ve received two major
bequests. One from Anna Canter whose brother Walter attended Camp in the 1920’s. Her $300,000 bequest built
the Camp pool. In 2008, we received a bequest of $315,000 from Alfred Andersen ‘32 which helped re-build our
endowment. Since then we’ve received over $100,000 in bequests from several people a portion of whose assets
are ensuring Camp’s continuation well into the future.

HELP VEST THE CAMP ACOLYTES
Our camp vestments are fraying and so we’re calling for help to replace cassocks and cottas for the choir and
acolytes. The current vestments are several decades old and are showing their age. Each year they are
stitched and stitched…but there is only so much left to stitch! Cassocks are $60 each and cottas $30 each:
replacing all we need will cost $2,000! Having served recently on Grads weekend and worked tirelessly to
find robes that fit some of our alumni (who shall remain nameless) , I can attest first hand that we are in great
need of a wardrobe upgrade. Please mail your donation to the camp office and help us replace these old and
tattered vestments. Thank you.
Alumni News
Jair Jones, Grad of 2013, currently an Airman in the Navy stationed
in Atsugi, Japan.
“Lake Delaware Boys Camp to me is more than just a camp it’s my
second home. The things I’ve learned & people I have met while my
time at camp are memories I will forever hold near to my heart.
Camp had a huge influence on since my first summer there. Because
I didn’t live up north I made a lot of sacrifices going to camp every
summer. Sacrifices like giving up a month of my summer with
friends to spend a month with people I can now call my family or
leaving camp to catch a flight the same day because the first day of
school was the next day. Looking back at it I wouldn’t take a summer back. LDBC played a major role in me joining the US Navy because the values of both the military and camp are so similar I felt
like I would fit right in. Since joining I am currently stationed in Japan & have visited other countries like Guam & Malaysia. I would
like to thank everybody who supports LDBC & more than anything I
would like to thank the loving General, the kind but stern when needed Colonel and the wise Father D. I feel like they have taken me in as
they do all the other boys who have came & graduated as a son of
their own. LDBC is one of the greatest places on earth and I can’t
wait until I get the opportunity to come back and visit again. Thank
you for all you do and may God be with you all. ~ Jair”

CAMPING WITH THE STARS 2016
Lake Delaware Alumni Association members have supported LDBC through donations of time, treasure, and
talents, especially through the Work Weekends.
Most of the Work Weekend projects occur when the camp is still ‘packed up’.
The tents are down, the Field House, Armory and Chapel are filled with storage.
Even the Mess Hall has Picnic Tables and other items stored for the off season.
These Work Weekends are important in order to get the BIG building projects accomplished.
But, 4 years ago -- “Camping with the Stars” was born!
An extra Work Weekend with Benefits!
A totally different event happening at Lake Delaware Boys Camp.
Those who have attended continue to rave about it.
We hope that you join us this year.
CAMPING WITH THE STARS!
We hope that you will sign up ~ because YOU are the STARS.
Festivities formally begin with Dinner on Friday, June 24th ,
Saturday, June 25th and end the late afternoon of Sunday, June 26th.
The concept for this weekend is to bring Alumni and their families together to participate in some last minute
Camp Craft Projects and also enjoy some of the LDBC experience!
Our staff will have emptied and set up the buildings for the camp season.
The boys tents will be set up. Some of you might choose to sleep in the boys tents 1 – 8….Aco or Bco and
some of you might pitch a tent up in the Parking Lot. We will have a schedule which includes waking up to
the Canon, Meals served in the Mess Hall, (Friday-Dinner, Saturday-Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner and SundayBreakfast & Lunch) Camp Grace said at all meals, Announcements with the Day’s schedule, Camp Craft Projects, Open Swim, Hikes, Evening Games, Sunday morning Chapel with Fr. D, an evening campfire. The evening will become quiet with the playing of Taps.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Suggested donation for the six meals = $30 per single adult or $50 per family.
RESERVATIONS must be made in advance and no later than June 10, 2016.
Email me (Sue Adams) at [email protected]
No one under the age of 18 will be allowed without a parent.
(Alcohol will be restricted to designated times and places throughout the weekend.
Absolutely no underage drinking. Please do not bring pets.)

Founders Medal SilverAwarded to Ann Lamberson on Grads weekend
Congratulations to Ann Lamberson, mother of Kevin G86 and
wife of Ray HG 88, for being awarded the founders medal silver
for her long and loyal dedication to LDBC. Ann has been an integral part of the success of the Grads weekend basket raffle, diligent worker on many work weekends and loyal supporter of
LDBC for over 35 years. Thank you for all you have done and
continue to do for LDBC,
Reflections from our General
Fr. Donahue asked me to share a few words during our Chapel service
I am thinking of the readings that we just heard today about the Ascension of Jesus.
When my husband and I were in Salisbury, England several years ago there was a wonderful painting on the
wall. The theme of this work of art was: Ascension. It had been done almost a thousand years ago. It
showed Jesus ascending -- arising up to heaven. On his right hand he was holding on to Adam and his left
hand he was holding on to Eve and they, Adam and Eve had their hands out and were holding other people
and those others were holding onto others and so on and so on.
This painting was actually a huge wall --- it depicted the very raising of humanity with Jesus Christ …. We
need to know that Christ’s ascension is important because of HIS ascension --- we then can ascend and can
ultimately go to heaven like Christ.
When I think of ldbc --- I think of ASCENSION --- I think of a place that lifts our vision higher
Robert and Cornelia Gerry had this crazy vision probably about 110 years ago to set in motion a dream! A
dream to make a summer camp available to boys who may not be able to have this in their life.
They reached out and then people like Father Whitcomb, the first director they brought in comes and sets in
motion all of the structure and formation we see at camp today! This was all meant to lift us to a greater vision …. Being greater than we would have
Our lives can be more than what they would have been.
Our vision can ascend to higher ideals …. things that matter.
Other camps …. You see their facilities and at first you see they have all these things to entertain their children.. but you realize that yes it is just to entertain ……. At LDBC, rather than having a business ….. we
have a mission. Our business is about building and raising boys to become men. A mission for all of us …
counselors, staff and campers alike to have our whole being raised…..our souls raised by the ideals and values of Lake Delaware Boys Camp.
So now let us reach out
Let us hold on to the person next to us
To the person behind us
To the person in front of us
That all are encouraged to be lifted up into Christ’s love and to share that love and to grab the hand of someone near them always and lift them higher!!!!!!

Grads Picnic Basket Raffle
The basket raffle/silent auction was very successful this year. We raised a total of $1,362 from the sale of
basket raffles, silent auction items, toys and adult and children’s books. Again Ann Lamberson was the largest contributor assembling over 20 baskets. Donors to the silent auction were
Kitty Gerry-painted poolside towel rack
Sue Drummond-silver necklace
Sue’s daughter-picnic basket set
Rich Burdett-2 photos
Bill Holzkamp-cedar planter
Barbara Holzkamp-vintage Dressy Bessy w/clothing
Additionally Chris Burdett donated many cans of coffee to sell and Corethia Oate donated tubes of sunscreen.
The always popular kid’s baskets drew many tickets as did gift certificates.
Please start putting together your basket for this coming grads weekend. As you can see, this is a great fundraiser for LDBC.
Dues and Donations
REMINDER:
Dues Reminder!!! Please help us r each our goal. Remember , you can also
pay your dues online at www.lakedelawareboyscamp.com.
In 2015, there were 150 dues paying alumni. Please take a moment of your time to pay your dues today. Every
contribution helps with the long term success of LDBC.
Please mail your $40 dues TODAY! Thank you!
Interested in giving more to LDBC? Consider sending in a small donation each month when you pay your bills.
$10 each month will have less impact on your budget than giving $100 or more all at once. Just address 12 envelopes to LDAA, insert a check into each envelope in the amount you want to give each month and mail with
your bills you pay each month. Also check to see if your company does a match to charitable organizations.
Sometimes they will match dollar for dollar or more. If you need specific information like the Tax ID number or
type of charity LDBC is, please contact the camp office at [email protected]. Thank you all for your continued
support of LDBC.
8th Annual Golf Outing
Our Grads Weekend Golf Outing is now officially a tradition. Come and join the Gerry Family, (Scottish) tacs and your fellow grads on the Friday before Grads Weekend, July 22, for an afternoon of fun and fellowship. The $85 cost includes pre game lunch, 18 holes of golf at the highly rated College Course, SUNY-Delhi, prizes, and post game hors d'oeurves. It is fitting our annual event
is held at this course, as Mrs. Elbridge T. Gerry, Sr. was a decorated golfer here decades ago. To participate, contact Dr. Cliff Sporn' 71 at [email protected] if you plan to attend. Cliff does an
amazing job organizing everything and all you have to do is show up and you’re guaranteed to have a
great time…even if you don’t have a great game! All are welcome.

2015 WORK WEEKENDS
SPRING WORK WEEKEND
Before the start of camp last year, a new roof was put
on the mess hall. Thanks again for the hard work and
dedication of Tommy Gardella and his crew for their
expertise and backbreaking work. Other projects were
also completed and a good time was had by all.
FALL WORK WEEKEND
Some of us arrived on Fri. afternoon, others on Sat.
morning. We discovered there was no gas to cook
with in the mess hall so KP operations were moved to
Father D’s stove. Menu was carefully thought out, and
cooks Chris and Bobby purchased items that would
work there. Some brought items to share, like new
potatoes, coffee packets, fruit, homemade brownies
and wine. All the table leaves were put in to extend
the table so all nine of us could sit down and enjoy the
great camaraderie that naturally occurs when LDBC
friends gather.
Jobs that had been suggested were all accomplished. The old paths to the unused rifle range and the infirmary
were cleared of fallen trees and overgrown brush, the rifle target area was dismantled, the boards repurposed to
be placed on the cut down and cut up tree to make an elevated walkway over the stream, and the large exhaust
fans in the ends of the mess hall and field house were covered. Chris Burdett had brought a tremendously useful tool that made clearing the brush seem easy. Meanwhile, Fred Holzkamp was carefully restaining the
shower house that he had previously bleached.
Geoff Dunham met with a man in Bovina who had old Gerry related postcards to sell. We were treated to a
look at them when he returned. Chris Burdett visited a barn sale way off Cabin Hill Rd. where he bought a 3
burner commercial coffee machine to donate to camp kitchen. Ron Frigenti and Geoff attended the 8 am service Sun. at "The Hook”, St. James Church where Father D. was providing supply.
For great friends, food, fun and a wonderful sense of accomplishment join us for the spring Work Weekend.

CAMP PRAYER
O God Who hast made and preserved this camp and sent us here to learn Thy Will: accept and sanctify our
prayers by the inspiration of Thy Holy Spirit.
Teach us to live together in comradeship, joy and peace.
In our camp life, give us the spirit of honor, understanding and perseverance; in our prayers, the power to
draw nigh to Thee; and in our games true sportsmanship.
Bless the founders and benefactors of our camp, Robert and Cornelia Gerry, for all that they have given us,
and recompense them with the riches of Thine everlasting Kingdom, for Jesus' sake. Amen.
