Please send any news items suitable for mention in the COS Bulletin as well as performance information to The Editor, Central Opera Service Bulletin, Metropolitan Opera, Lincoln Center, New York, NY 10023. Copies this issue: $3.00 ISSN 0008-9508 ENGLISH CAPTIONS IN PROJECTION Rights to use projected captions for these works must be secured from the rentor, the translator, and/or the publisher, depending on the individual case, and credit lines in programs and press releases, etc., must be worded accordingly. The name "Surtitle" is a trademark of the Canadian Opera Company, which developed the process, and credit must be given COC whenever the name "Surtitle" is used. Slides are front-projected onto a four or six foot high screen suspended from the top of the proscenium and running the full width of the opening. Two or three xenon carousel projectors equipped with a disolve are used. The video/computer method uses a character generator, a computer, and a projector and fader, providing a smoother appearance and disappearance of the script, but the equipment is much more expensive. The numbers following the semi-colon indicate the month/year when the material becomes available, the name in parentheses is that of the translator/scriptwriter. Numbers appearing in parentheses are the number of text slides <5c blank slides. The average full-length opera uses about 350-500 slides. Care must be taken when renting slides, since some deviations from the original text and/or stage direction may be inherent in the English captions.
