There is a general concern over the poor grasp of the English language among our students and this will
adversely affect their future and when it comes to employment. With this in mind the idea of having an Arts
& Creativity Exhibition 2015 was conceived. This first project held by MINDS hoped to encourage students to
be more creative both in writing and drawing and also to improve the English language skills.
The “Write and Illustrate” competition was opened to 3 categories of contestants:
 Primary students
 Secondary students
 Tertiary students (not more than 25 years of age)
Thirty-six entries were exhibited in UMAG from 18 to 23 September 2015. There were about 100 people
(including students) who attended the opening ceremony which was officiated by our Guest of Honour, Yang
Berhormat Tuan P. Kamalanathan, the Deputy Minister of Education I. YB Tuan Kamalanathan in his speech
said that it would be good to continue this competition organised for all the schools in Malaysia. MINDS is
indeed very grateful to YB for his support and encouragement in our first venture into arts and creativity.
Other VIPs present were YBhg Tan Sri Omar Abdul Rahman (the former Science Advisor to YAB Tun Mahathir
Mohamad), YBhg Tan Sri Dato Seri Utama Arshard Ayub (Chairman, Board of Directors, UM), YBhg Prof Datuk
Dr Rohana Yusof (Deputy VC, Student Affairs & Alumni, UM), Dr Nor Edzan Hj Che Nasir (Head of Library, UM)
represented the VC of UM, En Abdul Aziz Rashid (Director of Museum of Asian Art) and YBhg Dato V L Kandan
(Trustee of Yayasan Rekacipta Malaysia).
After the official opening of ACE, there were 2 talks taken by Dr Kalpana Sinha of Crossroads Public Research
Sdn Bhd and Ms Amy Ng of Pikaland. They spoke on Creative Writing and Illustration respectively.
On the second day, there were 3 workshops on Creative writing which ran in parrallel from 9am to 12pm.
The facilitors were Prof Zachary Roland Anthony of UTAR, for secondary school students, Ms Cassandra
Wijesuria of Taylor’s University, for the primary school students and Ms Natasha Mohd Hishamuddin of IACT
College took the workshop for tertiary students.
After lunch 3 more workshops on Illustration were conducted from 1pm to 4pm. The facilitors were Ms Fu
Yen Huei of Taylor’s University, Ms Liong Mei Yin of UTAR and Mr Charles Naidu also from Taylor’s
University.

Congratulations to our President, Tan Sri Augustine Ong on his award as
the Tokoh Akademik Negara on 21 September 2015 at the Anugerah Akademik
Negara (AAN). It was indeed adding another feather to his cap, as Tan Sri
Augustine S H Ong, the then former Dean of the School of Chemical Sciences who
is also a National Science Awardee was awarded the nation’s highest accolade for
academics who excelled in the field of educational development, the prestigious
Tokoh Akademik Negara.

The award, along with seven other awards were presented by the Minister of
Higher Education, YB Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh at the 9th National Academic Award
Ceremony in Putrajaya recently. Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh in his speech said that he
proposed that all academicians, in particular the award-winners, to utilise the
available advantages to become the guide, the drive and the catalyst towards
promoting academic excellence at the higher levels.
The Vice-Chancellor of USM, Professor Dato’ Dr Omar Osman congratulated Tan Sri
Ong and said that he hoped Tan Sri Ong would continue making contributions to
USM and share his vast experiences in the academic field and in the palm oil
industry.

Design Thinking Boot Camp 3.0
UCSI, Kuala Lumpur
Organised for the first time in UCSI by the Malaysian Invention & Design Society
(MINDS), the two-day Boot Camp aimed to train teachers and students on the basics of
design thinking and its application.
The opening ceremony was officiated by Tan Sri Ong. According to Tan Sri Ong –
design thinking is best described as a specific approach to innovation. He also
mentioned that through the Design Thinking Boot Camp, Malaysia will produce more
inventors and innovators.
“There are a lot of problems in this world that need solution and these lead to
inventions and innovations. I am proud of our inventors and innovators and I am
looking forward to seeing more of them. And through this Boot Camp, we hope to
achieve that goal,” he said.
The opening ceremony was also attended by UCSI’s Vice-Chancellor and President,
Senior Prof Dato’ Dr Khalid Yusoff. In his speech, he shared several initiatives by UCSI
to advance innovation and technology among UCSI students. Senior Prof Dato’ Dr
Khalid also added that UCSI is pleased to partner with MINDS as the agents of change.
“This Boot Camp may just be the right answer to combat rote-learning. It will help to
nurture and equip our students with the right mind-set and ability to think clearly,
creatively and innovatively. The sooner we realise what is important in our education,
the sooner we can proceed with change.”
The official facilitator of the two-day Boot Camp was Mr Stephen Poon, a lecturer from
Taylor’s University who is also the EXCO member of MINDS.
“It is very common that people misread design thinking as creative thinking. And this is
why it is very important for them to know the difference and understand the whole
rationale of the topic. It is about creating solutions."
Participants included students from UCSI University; SMK Tengku Ampuan Rahimah,
SMK Bukit Mewah, SMJK Chan Wa, Sekolah Kebangsaan Meru, SJK (C) Lee Min, SM
Teknik KL, and Maz International School.
Besides design thinking, one of the prominent topics presented at the Boot Camp was
on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) by Mr Ong Chui Koon, the Executive Director of
QO Patent Sdn Bhd.
Present at the ceremony was also Dr Tan Teng Hwang, the Advisor of the UCSI-MINDS
student chapter and Ee Kai Shen, the Organising Chairperson and President of the

Lunch Meeting with HKTDC

A lunch meeting was set up by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) to
discuss the possibility of future collaboration between HKTDC and MINDS. HKTDC was
represented by Ms Whitney Poon, Assistant Manager, Service Promotion Department
and Ms Nora Law, Assistant Business Matching Manager and MINDS was represented
by Dr Loo Koi Sang, Honorary Secretary, Ms Christine Ong, Honorary Treasurer, Ms
Kendra Lam and Ms Chrys Tee.
HKTDC will be having the InnoDesignTech Expo from 3-5 December 2015. The HKTDC
InnoDesignTech Expo (IDT Expo) is a unique one-stop platform for creative and
technology professionals to meet with enterprises looking to enhance their
competitiveness and find business partners for new opportunities emerging in Asia.
MINDS took the opportunity to introduce ITEX 2016 to the 2 representatives of HKTDC
and invited them to bring exhibitors from Hong Kong to take part in our next ITEX
which will be held from 12-14 May 2016.

MINDS BRAINSTORMING

Despite our success in the past 26 years of ITEX, we do not rest on our laurels and with
this in mind, a group of MINDS members got together on 15 August 2015 to generate
creative ideas and solutions through freewheeling group discussion on how we can
take ITEX to an even higher level.
The purpose of the brainstorming is how MINDS can help our exhibitors (including the
AYIE/MYIE) commercialise their inventions, in business matching and also to make
ITEX more relevant to our inventors and potential investors.
A total of 12 attended the brainstorming session which was held at the MINDS office.
Ideas no matter how small or ridiculous were thrown in the open for discussion and
for deliberation on.
The topic on commercialisation was discussed in detail andn how we at MINDS can
help our inventors in the area of commercialisation.
ITEX JUDGES’ APPRECIATION LUNCH
15 AUGUST 2015
They are all specialists and experts in their own fields and they are very good and
knowledgeable in what they do, they are the 119 judges who helped judge almost 1000
entries for the recent ITEX. As a token of our appreciation for their hard work, MINDS
hosted an appreciation lunch for them at Nandos, Tropicana City Mall. There was much
laughter and comaraderie as they reminisced on the whole day of judging during ITEX
2015.
MIND would like to express its sincere appreciation to all judges and in particular Chief
Judge, Dr Leo Ann Mean for all of your expertise and time to review and score this
year’s competition. Thank you all for the excellent job done and we hope to see you all
again for ITEX 2016!

MIRI YOUNG INNOVATIONS TECHNOCRATS TALK

MINDS was invited to the Innovation MyIT (Miri Young Innovation Technocrats) talk
on 17 August 2015 (Monday) at UPP Miri. There were 22 teachers and 80 students
from 16 secondary schools attended this talk. The speaker for this motivational talk
was Tan Sri Ong, he introduced MINDS and ITEX to all present. Besides that, he
encouraged the participants to be more creative in problem discovery and problem
solution. In his speech, he also provided a few of the Malaysian success stories
whereby the products have been commercialized.
The Miri Department of Education Director, Dr Hassan Bin Hasbollah took the
opportunity to encourage teachers and students to be more active in the innovation
project and create innovative products. Dr Hassan said that he hoped that this MyIT
Project could be expanded to the whole Miri district and to be able to compete with
other schools.
Students from SKM St Columba who competed and won in the recent MYIE, ITEX was
given due recognition during the talk and students from SM Sains Miri were given a
chance to present their innovative product – E-Oil (Effective Oil). This event stimulated
and encouraged other schools to be more active in this project.
Malaysia Mental Literacy Movement

The Malaysia Mental Literacy Movement (MMLM) together with the Universiti Tunku
Abdul Rahman and the Tunku Abdul Rahman University College jointly organised the
11th Malaysia Festival of the Mind. As with previous years, MINDS was given a booth at
the Sports Complex of the UTARC to promote creativity and inventiveness amongst the
students.

Although it was a hazy weekend, that didn’t stop invited guests and students from
turning up for the opening session of the 11the Malaysian Festival of the Mind. MMLM
Chairman, Tun Ling Liong Sik in his welcome speech expressed his appreciation to all
who have contributed to the success of the event. The festival was officiated by the
Guest of Honour, Mr Jay Yeunh Wee Tiong, Managing Partner of DMP Architects Sdn
Bhd and a Member of the UTAR Council. In his opening speech, he said that our brains
make us curious learners, innovative creators, memory keepers and intelligent
thinkers.

Seminar on Writing IEEE Transaction Papers and
Supervising Research Students

On 16 October 2015, the Young MINDS Chapter co-organised the above seminar with
the Innovation and Research Management Centre (iRMC) of UniTEN and the IEEE
Power Electronics Society of Malaysia. The seminar was held at UniTEN from 9.00am
to 11.00am. The seminar was opened by the Dean of College of Engineering, UniTEN,
Assoc Prof Dr Izham Bin Zainal Abidin.
The objective of the seminar is to provide opportunities for academics, researchers,
and graduate research students to gain knowledge from Professor Hirofumi Akagi.
Prof Hirofumi is from Tokyo Institute of Technology and is an IEEE Fellow, he is also a
leading researcher on power conversion systems and their applications in industry,
utility, and transportation.
Prof Akagi has authored and co-authored some 120 IEEE Transactions papers in the
field of power electronics. The total citations of his papers in Google Scholar had
reached more than 30,000 times.

Prof Akagi shared his knowledge and experiences in the classification and review
process of technical papers. He also provided tips on technical writing and methods to
get a technical paper accepted for publication. He also explained the criteria for
achieving IEEE Transactions Prize Paper Awards. Sharing the rostrum was Dr Nadia
Tan, our Young MINDS Chapter Publicity Officer spoke about her observations of the
operations at the power electronics laboratory in Tokyo Institute of Technology and
the management style of Prof Akagi, who is also her supervisor.
The seminar enjoyed an overwhelming response from UniTEN staff and students,
members of Young MINDS Chapter as well as IEEE PELS Malaysia.

PlaTCOM-MINDS “ITEX GOLD WINNERS” PITCHING SESSION

MINDS meeting with AIM and PlaTCOM on 6 June 2015 proved to be a very productive step to helping our
inventors have their inventions evaluated during a number of pitching sessions (27 sessions over a period of 11
days). The objective of these sessions is to create value to the gold winners of the innovations featured during
the ITEX 2015 event.
27 out of a total of 146 ITEX gold winners from companies, government agencies and public research institutes
attended the pitching session which is also known as IPR census (to conduct stock-take and analysis to identify
the commercial viability of the various intellectual properties rights residing in the universities and research
institutes). All the innovations presented to PlaTCOM Ventures were evaluated based on several criteria:
Science, Team, IP position, State of development, Commercial potential and Route to commercialisation.
MINDS is glad to note that 22 of those who went for the pitching session were selected for the Innovation
Business Opportunity (IBO). The IBO is Malaysia’s national online platform established to turn inventions into
innovations. This platform facilities the connection between technology push and market pull. Another 2 were
selected for the High Impact Programme2 (HIP2). The HIP2 is a programme designed for Malaysian SMEs to
help them move their innovations along the complex stages of the commercialisation process.
With the successful outcome of the pitching sessions, PlaTCOM Ventures Sdn Bhd is looking at a 3-year strategic
alliance with MINDS and the Strategic Alliance Agreement (SAA) will be recognised on 28 October 2015 at the
Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre during the Innovating Malaysia Conference (IMC) 2015.
NASA IS OPENING UP HUNDREDS OF PATENTS TO INVENTORS, FOR FREE
From the memory foam in your mattress to the advanced alloys in your tennis racquet, NASA is behind some of
the biggest technological advances of our time. Now, the space agency is giving other inventors the chance to
build on those by letting them use its patents — for free.
NASA's Technology Transfer Program says it's opening up its patent portfolio and waiving the costs associated
with using the patents for at least the first three years of a company's product development. Once a startup has
brought the product to market, NASA will start collecting a "standard net royalty fee," but otherwise inventors
will be able to use the patents however they like.
Combining NASA technologies, or building on them in new ways, could lead to further advances in materials
science, communications, manufacturing, heath and medicine or robotics, to name a few. NASA maintains a
searchable database of all the eligible patents for licensing under its startup initiative. They cover everything
from an airplane that can fly in low-density atmospheres like Mars to super-accurate lasers that can transfer
data through space at the speed of light to lie-detection technology.
Although we think of NASA as mainly a science and exploration agency, it's easy to forget that it designs some
