The last ice age is a really long time ago, but the ChiemseeAlpenland, the Eggstätt-Hemhofer Seenplatte can thank the
ice age for the largest and oldest national park (conservation
area) in the Chiemsee-Alpenland. 18 lakes, which are north of
the Chiemsee, belong to it. With the retreat of the glaciers huge
blocks of ice were left which later melted. At these points hollows
were formed, and were filled with ground water and became the
lowland plain full of lakes. Today in the national park, providing
