Peter was sentenced to four months in jail, and Judith was fined $21, 500. Her lawyer then fought to have the fine lowered due to her unemployment. She won and the fine was lowered to $15, 000. Another example is Jordan Lucas, a twenty-nine year old man from Vancouver, who was convicted of abusing several cats and a mouse, which he filmed on video. In total, 36 videos of torture were found. He was originally charged after he sold his phone to a woman, she later found a fifty-minute video of the torture he committed on the device. Lucas was sentenced to merely seventeen months in jail and a twoyear ban on owning animals. Calgary’s Nicolino Camardi, who had already been convicted of animal abuse which included a lifetime ban on owning pets, took in his neighbour’s animals. An investigation led by the Human Rights Watch Organization released a statement calling Israel out for multiple military violations, such as leading airstrikes on United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in Near East (UNWRA) schools on three separate incidents: Israeli militants were also allegedly told to regard everyone and everything that occupied Gaza as a threat. Recently, on February 9, 2016, the Israeli Labour Party premier, Isaac Herzog released a statement regarding his diplomatic plan that involves the total separation between Israelis and Palestinians, a plan that does not signify Israeli withdrawal from Palestine, but rather acts to further expand their colonial agenda onto Palestinian territory. Herzog reported that he “wish[es] to separate from as many Palestinians as possible......” and further explained, “we’ll erect a big wall between us. That is the kind of co-existence that is possible right now....We want to finish it, to complete the barrier that separates us.” Herzog further justifies his plan by acknowledging Palestinian residents in territory claimed by Israel, and plans to cut off Palestinian villages from Jerusalem (a city claimed by both Israel and Palestine) completely. He explains: “Terrorists won’t have access to Jews. Those who want to work and make a living rather than stabbing people – we’ll leave those for consideration of the defence establishment.” The statement implies fate of Palestinians convicted of committing crimes will be determined by the Israeli military. Herzog’s generality completely dismisses the unequal number of casualties between Israel and Palestine (Approximately 6,371 Palestinians and 1,083 Israelis have been killed since the year 2000). Despite Israel’s claim to promote a healthy co-existence between the two states, their actions have yet to match their speech. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during the UN General Assembly in fall 2015 confirmed he “remain[s] committed to a vision of questioned about the two states for two peoples.” resume to control the entirety of what is the West Bank. When questioned about the Palestinian rebel group Hamas, the party’s leader concluded that “They will have no immunity and for every attack they’ll pay a heavy price. This won’t mean dummy bombings of areas.” Bombings in Palestine are consistently justified by Hamas, yet everyone fails to realize that more often than not, more civilians are killed than members of Hamas. Feeding terrorism with terrorism is a tactic used by far too many countries under the pretense of “defense” and is a practice that should be abolished completely. Western donors, the United States especially, claim to contribute to a vision of co-existence between Palestine and Israel and promote a peace process between the two states; however, the very contradiction is that these same Western donors continue to subsidize costs for the Israeli army, thus supporting apartheid rules in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. The plight of Palestine is looking extremely bleak, and without foreign aid to Gaza and West Bank directly, the future of the state will inevitably be disastrous. ProPalestine protests have took place in numerous nations all around the world, including countless ones in Canada, yet western countries have yet to respond to the crisis. Lema Nazeeh, a Palestinian student living in Ramallah, West Bank says, “Palestinians from all over need to be united in resisting the occupation – demonstrating in Gaza City, Jerusalem, Haifa, Ramallah, Bethlehem, Yaffa, and Hebron. As long as the occupation continues, we must keep resisting for a life of freedom and dignity.” The message from Palestinian youth is that Palestine will be free, and they are determined to end the occupation and settler terrorism in Gaza and the West Bank. Sadly, the fight is evidently unequal and the world continues to watch in silence. Page 4 -- EDITORIALS -- Scarlett FEVER -- Dr. E. P. Today, the price of oil stands at The Alberta division of the NDP had a great 2015. They made a gigantic breakthrough by defeating the near-unbeatable Progressive Conservatives, ending their 44-year dynasty. Some of the NDP success was due to campaigning to angry Albertans who were disillusioned with the recent prentice budget; the party claimed they would change the way things worked. The NDP delivered on the promise of change handily: by hiking taxes, increasing the deficit, and causing the credit agency Standard and Poor to downgrade Alberta’s credit rating from AAA to AA+. The NDP, specifically Minister of Finance Joe Ceci, reacted to the news that Alberta’s credit rating was downgraded by pointing fingers at Alberta’s over-reliance on oil and gas and the fact that low oil prices have hampered the economy. This, however, is not entirely true. By Misha Mustaqeem On February 19th, 2016, Harper Lee, who wrote the Pulitzer Prize winning book To Kill A Mockingbird back in 1960, died in Monroeville, Alabama from natural causes. She was 89 years old. Harper Lee is best known for her novel To Kill A Mockingbird, which portrays life in Alabama in the 1930s, as seen by a young girl by the name of Scout. The plot centres around her father, Atticus Finch, as he tries to defend Tom Robinson a black man, who was accused of raping the white Mayella Ewell. Despite overwhelming evidence of Tom Robinson’s innocence, he is found guilty. The novel went through a troubled development cycle: the manuscript was once thrown out the window, and the publishing company foolishly thought the entire novel would not sell well. Initially, not all reviews of the book were enthusiastic. Granville Hicks, a American Marxist writer, called it “melodramatic and contrived” and some lambasted the novel for it`s one-dimensional look at poor white Southerners and a stereotypical look at black victims. The novel however sold millions, has never been out of print, and has been translated into more than ten languages around the world, and has since been reappraised as a “classic,” so much so that some literary critics have posted this novel above the Holy Bible in greatness. The book was eventually adopted in 1964 to a film called To Kill A Mockingbird, which received critical acclaim comparative to the original novel, and was nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture. Despite losing the best picture award to Lawrence of Arabia, the film received the Best Actor Oscar for Gregory Peck, for his criticallyacclaimed performance of Atticus Finch. Lee eventually wrote what was initially marketed as a sequel, Go Set A Watchman. The recent publication of the novel was met with controversy, with some publications such as the Wall Street Cheat Sheet calling people to boycott the work. They cited Harper Lee’s declining health, and being taken advantage by her lawyers and the fact that her closest advisor and sister Alice Lee (who prevented the novel from being published) passed away shortly before its publication. Go Set A Watchman also received polarizing reviews from literary critics, with most of them decrying the characterization of Atticus Finch, who compared to his earlier appearance is more bigoted than equal. Later, Go Set A Watchman was found to have been a earlier draft of To Kill A Mockingbird, discovered during a late appraisal of Lee’s assets in 2011, but not released as Go Set A Watchman until 2014. Lee also helped Truman Capote, a long-time friend of hers, write In Cold Blood, a novel about the 1959 murders of the Herbert Clutter farm family in Holcomb, Kansas. The novel itself was adapted into a film by Richard Brooks. The events surrounding the publication of the novel was illustrated in Capote, starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Truman Capote, and Catherine Keener as Harper Lee. Lee was buried in Monroeville after a private funeral as per her request. Youtuber pair attempts to trademark the word “React” By Callum Serieska What happens when a group of Youtube stars try to trademark a word, narrow a genre, and earn more money from this word? They get stomped on by the Internet, and lose roughly 300,000 followers. Popular Youtube sensation, The Fine Brothers who are known for creating reaction videos, have recently tried to do something that many have tried before, often with no success: they tried to trademark a word. The trademarking idea began sometime in 2015 when the Fine Brothers filed for the trademark to accompany their new video platform designed to help content producers make “React” content in the form of videos, using the same setup that the Fine Brothers use. When word of the trademark, and new platform arose early February 2016, Internet users saw that this may in turn affect content creators in a way that nobody had predicted. If the Fine Brothers were allowed to follow through with the “React” trademark, they could have the option to remove any content from Youtube that resembles a react video or, if they wanted to, they could leach Photo by Callum Serieska The idea of trademarking the word “react” recieved many different opinions from others profits from the video, giving the creator less profit for their own original content. In typical Internet fashion, people outraged by the trademark, and the possible downsides that followed it, took to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media in order to vent their feelings, and express their anger in a calm and controlled manner. Soon after the extreme amount of venting, parody react videos, and even threats, the Fine Brothers opted to end their bid for the trademark, remove the video platform that never saw the light of day, and even dropped a few other trademarks that they had previously owned, as they too could also be used to control media in a way that they had not intended. The Fine Brothers even made a short apology video citing that the trademark could have been used wrongfully, and the amount of power that they would have had if they owned it; however, they stated during the apology that the plans for the trademark came with good intentions not bad. The plan that they had was to start a website called React World. In React World people would be allowed to borrow the trademark, and produce content similar to the style of content that the Fine Brothers have become famous for. People would be allowed to make their own custom react projects, and post them on their own channel under the React World logo; however, anybody using this platform in turn would have to give a percentage of any, and all earning to the Fine Brothers. Youtube content is designed to be unique and get the point of the video across whether it be a comedy performance, or a dramatic monologue, or even an action scene. Youtube is designed to share content in a way that people just are not able to in a normal environment. It is meant to be unique; however, when people trademark a word, or try to narrow down how videos are presented, users of the Internet often take it sourly. Whenever a person or group tries to control an entire genre it often will not work. In this case trademarking the word “React” was a bad call on the part of the Fine Brothers, and this was demonstrated by the uproar that followed the doomed project. This type of trademarking is no longer uncommon, however. In fact it is beginning to become quite popular. March 2016 -- Scarlett FEVER -- Dr. E. P. Scarlett High School -- NEWS -- Page 7 The Zika virus is a real threat to Canadians South America into North Ameri By Callum Serieska The main difference between the republican race this year and the previous race is also another difference: this Republican primary had more candidates running for president. While 2012 had twelve candidates running, there are nineteen candidates this year. 2016 has also seen more candidates dropping out than any other primary. The first to drop out was former Governor of Texas, Rick Perry, who received notoriety for his 2012 campaign due to ill-timed ads, horrid debate performances, and his now infamous gaffe about eliminating three government agencies, in which he could not name the Department of Energy. His campaign never stood a chance, as he polled very low (eleventh) and also due to several financial problems caused by the campaign, spending four times as much as it raised. He suspended his campaign and endorsed fellow Texan Ted Cruz. The next to drop out was Wisconsin Governor (and survivor of a recall election) Scott Walker, who surprised many political observers by announcing he would run. Initially, he was polled as the front-runner and many funds were directed into his campaign; however, a decline in both polling and funding contributed to him dropping out on September 21, 2015. Others who dropped out before the primaries include: Bobby Jindal, former Louisiana governor; Lindsey Graham, senator from South Carolina; and George Pataki, former US Senator from New York. None of them made any considerable political impact in polling. The biggest story so far in this race is not whether or not candidates have dropped out; instead it belongs to one man: Donald Trump. Trump, who has already became infamous with his TV show The Apprentice, and an unsuccessful third-party candidate run for president in 2000 (on the Reform Party ticket), propelled this infamy to new heights with his Republican presidential race. From stating that he will build a wall to end illegal immigration, to announcing that as president, he will put a halt to any Muslim im- migration, until in his words, “we can figure out what is going on with ISIS,” he has angered more people than even Mitt Romney did back in 2012 with his condescending comments about women and the disrespect towards those who did not support him. Trump’s plan seems to be resonating with voters however, a recent poll showed Trump in the lead with 49% of Republican primary support, higher than any of his rivals combined. In general election polls, he has been shown to beat Hillary Clinton numerous times. The primary season began on February 1, 2016 in Iowa. Ted Cruz won there with 27.6% of the vote, with Trump winning 24.3% of the vote. Later, accusations that Cruz sent letters that Ben Carson was going to drop out soon emerged, and his campaign was mired in scandal. U.S. Senator Rand Paul, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, and former US Senator Rick Santorum, all withdrew after the primary, citing disappointing results. The next state to hold a primary was New Hampshire on February 9. There, Trump secured his first win. He would go on to win South Carolina and Nevada, on February 20 and 23 respectively. After these wins, the GOP establishment began to panic. Many candidates, such as Carly Fiorina and Jeb Bush dropped out in order to support either Cruz or Marco Rubio in an attempt to overthrow the front-runner Trump from his near wipeout of the Republican primaries; however, it may be impossible to “stump” the Trump, if the recent polling is of any indication. On Super Tuesday, Trump won the majority of the states up for grabs. Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Vermont and Virginia all went to Trump, securing 203 delegates. Cruz meanwhile won Alaska, Oklahoma, and Texas, securing 144 delegates, while Rubio won Minnesota, securing 71 delegates. John Kasich and Ben Carson did not win any states and secured 19 and 3 delegates, respec- tively; this has put their campaigns into disarray, with many analysts predicting they will drop out sooner or later. Meanwhile, on the Democratic primary side, there were six candidates: former US Senator Jim Webb of Virginia; former Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee; Lawrence Lessig; former governor Martin O’Malley; former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and US Senator Bernie Sanders. Three out of six Democratic primary contenders dropped out even before the primaries began, and Martin O’ Malley dropped out after a disappointing result in Iowa. Therefore, the battle has devolved into a battle between Sanders and Clinton.Clinton has the advantage, with more primaries won and more superdelegates than Sanders, while Sanders has a grassroots movement consisting of democratic socialists. Some questions have been raised about Clinton, with many of her opponents pointing to her disastrous handling of the Libya intervention, and her refusal to testify on Obama’s administration’s cover-up on what happened in Benghazi in 2012. However, many other questions have been raised about Sanders - many decry his economic plan, including many small businesses and several democrats. Others, including Clinton, have questions about his party faith, considering the fact that he considered himself as an “independent” before 2015. There might be a problem with the Democrat party. Many Democrats in Massachusetts have quit the party in favour of Trump, and 20% of Democrats would defect for Trump, according to a poll by The Hill. On Super Tuesday, Clinton swept Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas (where her husband, Bill Clinton served as governor), Texas, while her opponent Bernie Sanders swept Oklahoma, Colorado, Minnesota, and Vermont. Each received 486 and 321 delegates, respectively. The big question now is whether Trump will continue his near-unstoppable momentum. ca, and even Europe. As Zika has been brought back into media attention, this time at a dangerous level, scientists are attempting to develop a vaccine. With the delayed start, the process of creating the vaccine will most likely be a long, and a tough one. Since Zika is so easily spread, The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that it will likely spread to most of the world, and it will be difficult to identify when exactly the virus will be either slowed or stopped. Of the 272 deaths, 81 were located in Calgary, the highest toll of any Albertan city. Compared to fentanyl related deaths in 2014, the provincial overdose rate has spiked dramatically, by 126%, and shows no sign of slowing down in 2016. The rapidly climbing rate of fentanyl abuse poses a threat to individuals of all demographics. Fentanyl misuse has been witnessed in all walks of life, claiming the lives of parents and teenagers, the wealthy and the poor. The death toll of 2016 is predicted to be the same, or higher. The addictive drug, also called “shady eighties” or “green beans,” began to be noticeably abused in 2012 when narcotic pain reliever OxyContin was removed from the market in Canada. As the supply of OxyContin diminished, a strong demand for cheap street opiates arose, and the answer was found in fentanyl. At first, fentanyl was abused through prescriptions and skin patches, prescribed primarily to cancer patients in severe pain. However, as popularity of the drug increased, black market manufactured fen- of these factors make it extremely easy to overdose. Overdoses are more likely to occur when the drug is mixed with other opiates, sleeping pills, or if the user has not built up a suitable tolerance to opiates. An effort is being made by Alberta Health Services to broaden access to fentanyl’s antidote, naloxone. 4000 take-home naloxone kits are being distributed to clinics throughout the province in order to combat rising overdose rates. Naloxone does not cure fentanyl overdoses, but temporarily reverses its effects so that the individual has more time to receive medical attention. In a statement regarding the ongoing fight against fentanyl, Health Minister Sarah Hoffman says “[Government and health officials] are continuously looking at ways we can prevent more deaths, both in the area of harm reduction, but also in the area of addiction prevention and treatment.” The government will continue to try to put an end to the fentanyl crisis, but as of now, a dent has yet to be made in the illegal distribution of the drug. By Quinlan Craig Dr. E. P. Scarlett High School -- March 2016 Author Harper Lee lives on through her timeless novel By Rachel Esser Most authors write books with the intention of sharing an idea or story with the public, and strive to reach success with their publications. For many authors, it is but a hopeful dream to reach the kind of success that stands the test of time and creates a genuine impact on society. One of such brilliant and successful authors is Harper Lee, whose novel To Kill A Mockingbird has been immortalized and remains both a key part of western curriculum and a well-loved story by people of all different ages and upbringings. To Kill A Mockingbird has a lasting impression and teaches many essential lessons on friendship, family, discrimination, truth, patience, judgement, justice, and what she was just a child, she saw a photo of a fourteen-year-old African American boy who was murdered for allegedly whistling at a white woman. The boy, Emmett Till, unwittingly left emotional scars on Gabbin, who she “was traumatized as a child by the whole thought of racism, and the fact that children weren’t safe in this country... [simply] because of the color of their skin.” Gabbin read To Kill A Mockingbird when she was seventeen and found it to be a pivotal novel with characters that she was able to connect to. She found the character of Tom Robinson to be more of a hero than a victim, and reminded her of her own African American father and grandfather who faced adversity to get their families through hard times. Atticus Finch represented hope, in her eyes, that the act of discrimination Photo by Angela Zhao Brandon Liao, Grade 11, learns about US author Harper Lee in a LIFE magazine tribute it really means to have courage and strength. Though it was set in the 1930s in Maycomb Alabama, when the Great Depression was sweeping across the United States with devastating effects, the messages in To Kill A Mockingbird bore great relevance to her audience when it was published on July 11th, 1960. The book came out just in time to be thrust into the controversial fight over school desegregation that was happening in America. As To Kill A Mockingbird sat primly on the top of best-seller lists, in the early 60s, protesters were organizing sit-ins at exclusive white-only dining establishments, and the civil rights movement was rapidly picking up steam. English Professor Joanne Gabbin of James Madison University in Virginia, grew up in the 50s and 60s and was highly impacted by the on-goings of society. When was not endorsed by the whole white race, and that there really were white people who would do the right thing. Gabbin even believes that the novel may have greatly aided that change and made such a hope a reality. “People who were determined to keep black people down ... were not going to be reading this book in the first place and were not going to be influenced,” says Gabbin. “But I think those people who were moderate, who were more liberal, when they got to read To Kill A Mockingbird, they probably wanted to identify with the courageous character of Atticus Finch.” Author Mary McDonagh Murphy was also greatly influenced by this classic novel: “The story of Scout’s initiation and maturing is the story of finding out who you are in the world. And at the same time, the novel is about finding out who we are as a country.” Continued on page 30 March 2016 -- Scarlett FEVER -- Dr. E. P. These trackers monitor a wide range of indicators: heart rates, sleeping patterns, water intake, calories burned and movement. Cybersecurity researchers at the University of Toronto examined the eight trackers in depth, testing how they communicate with mobile apps and upload or store a user’s workout information. Andrew Hilts, the lead researcher, said that “fitness trackers are a fairly new technology and we don’t have many regulations right now. The falling Canadian dollar is weighing heavily on Canada’s biggest airline as they purchase planes and fuel. Air Canada expects seat costs to fall 2-3% and this excludes the discounts caused by decreased fuel expenses. Calin Rovinescu stated, “The transformative changes we’ve made in recent years provide us with a cost structure, fleet and flexibility to respond, as we did in 2015, to competitive market conditions, fluctuations in the Canadian dollar and to economic weakness.” Airlines have been benefiting from a 70% fall in the price of oil since mid-2014, but the fall also is affecting the demand for Canadian airlines. Air Canada’s biggest rival, WestJet, earlier this year reported a lower fourth-quarter profit and stated that their current-quarter revenue per available seat mile is at its steepest decline since 2009. Lower fuel costs helped Air Canada to boost their operating cost by 1.5 percentage points in the fourth quarter. Last month, Air Canada announced its plans to purchase 45 Bombardier CS300 aircraft, with an option to purchase up to 30 additional aircraft. With this, Air Canada is expected to start taking deliveries in 2019. The order is valued at US$3.8 billion based on matching an analyst estimate, according to Thomas Reuters, with the Institutional Brokers’ Estimate System. Bombardier has made sure that the C Series aircraft appeals to customers. Bombardier has created an aircraft that offers 19-inch-wide seats setting a new industry standard, large overhead bins that accommodate a carry-on bag for each passenger, and the largest windows in the single-aisle market. Together, these characteristics create a widebody feel that offers passengers an exceptional level of comfort only available on the C Series. Bombardier has also completed numerous noise tests confirming that the C Series is the quietest aircraft in its class. Regular passengers should expect a very quiet flight, comfortable wide seats and more stowage for carry-on baggage. Having quieter, more comfortable flights will make the flying experience much more enjoyable for that average flier. Most wide-body aircraft used for long haul flights only have 18-inch or even 17-inch wide seats: the CS300 offers 19-inch wide seats. Fliers who like window seats should expect windows measuring 11”x16” which are around the size of the windows that one would find on a Boeing 777. Ms. Ayesha Shaikh says, “I was introduced to the Fit Bit over Family Day in 2015 and have always been interested in fitness. I was given my Fitbit HR as a birthday gift last March, using it every day to set goals for water intake, steps, stairs and exercise, as well as syncing my data every night. By the way, I am part of a challenge group of teachers here at EPS. This Fitbit has continued to about using the tracker.” All in all the news that fitness information might be leaked to the public has gotten mixed opinions. Some people are now considering to stop using their bands while others do not care at all. While it is up to each user to decide whether or not to continue using fitness devices, weighing the potential pros and cons helps the consumers to make well informed decisions. Scarlett High School -- March 2016 Boeing 737 MAX airbus ar- Mass underfunding for FN rives in Canada with style By Wenonah North Peigan By Will Ross-Dushinski The brand new 737 MAX airliner has finally arrived, taking its first flight early this year. The MAX delivers a new flying experience with Boeing’s all-new Sky Interior. The new interior welcomes passengers with flowing curves and fulllength sculpted sidewalls that create a very spacious, comfortable space. ers to their fleet in 2017. Richard Bartrem, Vice-President of Communications and Community Relation at WestJet, says, “We are excited about the increase of fuel efficiency the 737 MAX will bring to our fleet. We’re thrilled about the on-board atmosphere the aircraft will provide for our guest in the future, as well as the network flexibility we will get from this aircraft.” The federal Liberal government is preparing to overhaul the way welfare is delivered on reserves after the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal found that the discriminatory policies of the Indigenous Affairs department have led to chronic underfunding and are damaging the lives of thousands of First Nations children. The whole premise of the ruling this week of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal is bewildering. The idea – and the fact – is that child-welfare services for First Nations children delivered by the federal government, on reserves, are severely underfunded when they are compared with the similar child-welfare services delivered to First Nations by provincial governments. It suggests that child-welfare services to native Canadians on reserves appear to be significantly underfunded – despite the fact that these communities likely need would seek judicial review of this decision,” Ms. Wilson-Raybould said. “We can and must do better, and we will renovate the child-welfare system in this country.” The tribunal found that discriminatory policies embedded by the Indigenous Affairs department into the First Nations Child and Family Services Program, which pays for welfare on reserves, “perpetuate the historical disadvantage and trauma suffered by aboriginal people, in particular as a result of the Residential Schools system.” So far, there is no happy, or at least happier, end in sight. The tribunal says that many natives look upon social workers as part of yet another attempt at child abduction – a “hostile working environment,” as the decision puts it. Up to a point, they may be right. Under the current system, indigenous children in “care” tend not to thrive. The government’s own documents say the underfunding for welfare on reserves runs between 22 per cent and 34 per cent, com- Photo by Will Ross-Dushinski This aircraft, 737-8CT(WL) C-FWIJ was delivered to WestJet on June 18, 2012 The all new MAX delivers 8% lower operating cost than its competitor the A320 NEO. The MAX’s new advanced technology scimitar winglets (an apparatus attached to the end of the plane’s wings) combine rake tip technology with a dual feather winglet concept into one advanced treatment for the wings of the 737 MAX. Using what is called Natural Laminar Flow Technology, the winglets will increase its fuel efficiency by 1.8%. The MAX is equipped with two CFM LEAP-1B engines, combined with the new scimitar winglets, delivers approximately 13% more fuel efficiency than that of the current 737 NG aircraft. Further, the nitrous oxide emissions are 50% below CAEP/6 (Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection) limits. With the CFM LEAP-1B engines there is also a 40% drop in noise, making the flight quiet and more comfortable. Currently the two Canadian airlines that have placed orders for the 737 MAX are WestJet and Air Canada. On August 29, 2013 WestJet announced that they would be adding 65 new 737 MAX airlin- On April 1, 2014 Air Canada finalized their plan to introduce 61 new 737 MAX airliners as a potential replacement to their Embraer E190 fleet. “Our narrowbody fleet renewal with the 737 MAX is expected to yield significant cost savings and is a key element of our ongoing cost transformation program,” said Calin Rovinescu, the President and CEO of Air Canada. “Projected fuel and maintenance cost improvements of more than 20% per seat will generate an estimated CASM [Cost per Available Seat Mile] reduction of approximately 10% compared to our existing narrowbody fleet. The 737 MAX offers improvements to the environment, making this the best choice for Air Canada.” Passengers that have the chance to fly on the 737 MAX should look forward to experiencing Boeing’s spacious Sky Interior. Passengers should also be excited about the minimal effect on the environment. Customers also should look forward to the dramatic noise decrease in the cabin compared to the 737NG aircraft. Photo by Wenonah North Peigan Many First Nations youth face constant underfunding problems everyday at home and school above-average funding. The tribunal also rightly says that child-welfare social work should be carried on, whenever possible, so as to keep children in or near their families, immediate or extended, in their own communities. Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould, a former member of the Assembly of First Nations national executive, told the House of Commons that the government will take some time to review the lengthy ruling. “But understand and recognize that there will likely not be any reason why we pared with provincial rates. It was estimated in 2012 that it would take an additional $109-million a year to close the gap. The Human Rights Tribunal asked for an immediate removal of the most discriminatory aspects of the funding schemes that Indigenous Affairs uses to pay for child welfare on reserves Cindy Blackstock, executive director of the The First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada, said the decision marks a great day for First Nations children and for Canadians who believe in justice. March 2016 -- Scarlett FEVER -- Dr. E. P. Scarlett High School -- NEWS -- Page 12 Distracted driving law updated in Alberta to limit crashes By Devyn Mitchell Distracted driving is considered to be one of the most dangerous factors of driving today. With the accumulation of new technology that has been released over the past few years, it can be difficult for drivers to resist their brand new cell phones during their commute to work or school in the morning. But everyone, whether they have been involved in a distracted-driving related collision or not, knows that avoiding cell phones will greatly reduce their chances of being in a collision. A statistic from Alberta Transportation in 2011, states that distracted drivers are considered three times more likely to be involved in a collision than non-distracted drivers. Effective as of January 1, 2016, distracted drivers in Alberta not only have to pay the $287 fine, but will also receive a total of three demerit points on their license. Activities like eating a snack, drinking a non-alcoholic beverage, using a hands free mobile device, smoking, and holding a conversation with passengers are all permitted, but can still be distracting tasks. Drivers should use caution when engaging in any of these activities. Canadian provinces are really trying to crack down on distracted driving laws, due to the large number of dangers associated with the act. Alberta’s government feels that with the new addition to the law, the numbers of distracted drivers on Alberta roads will be greatly reduced. Avoiding their phones, as well as other distractions that may follow drivers into the vehicle, will play a huge role in making Alberta roads safer. ties. It is no question that Canada’s economy depends on a well-skilled and educated workforce, and it is expected that the introduction of free tuition for certain students will aid in the creation of jobs and thus contributing to a growing economy. The Ontario Student Grant inevitably will reduce quite a large number of financial barriers that can prevent students hailing from lowincome families from pursuing a post-secondary education. Ontario currently has one of the highest tuition rates in the country, averaging approximately $6,160 annually for an arts and science degree in the province. While it is reported that approximately 66% of adults in Ontario hold an undergraduate degree, the majority of these holders often come from wealthier, uppermiddle class families. The Ontario government’s system certainly is attempting to reduce financial barriers on students from lower-class families in order to contribute to a more educated and skilled economic class. Ontario introduces new Student Grant, covering full tuition costs for students in need from low-income families By Tajmee Ali On Thursday, February 25, 2016, the government of Ontario announced free postsecondary tuition for students from low-income families that will be enacted in the upcoming 2017-18 school year. All current student financial programs will be replaced by a single program named the Ontario Student Grant. The single largest transformation of student financial assistance in the province’s history will now allow students from families with an annual income of $50,000 or less to receive large grants under the OSG that will cover the cost of their entire tuition. Students from families with incomes of less than $83, 000 will also be eligible for receiving non-repayable grants, and in compliance with replacing all current grants programs, the Ontario government is abolishing tuition tax credit (credits applying to students, i.e. textbook amounts) in order to reorganize and simplify the process for present university students. All Ontario university and college students are qualified to apply for the program; however, the program will not support students attending American universi- Page 13 -- NEWS -- Scarlett FEVER -- Dr. E. This class is available at the 10, 20, and 30 levels. Business 10 and 20 are combined, grade ten and eleven students stay together in the same class, allowing students to work together and cooperate to make the most successful year possible. Students work together to sell products and form a business. It is also an environment where different students from different grades can socialize and become friends. Business students make products for peers to purchase and enjoy with other friends and family. Socks and coasters were produced by business students in the first semester of the 2015-2016 school year. Products are made by the students and plenty of time is spent producing them; roughly a month and a half is dedicated to production alone. Because of the hard work invested in the products, selling the products is usually a success for business students. There are many benefits to taking Business studies. Starting in the second semester of the 2015/16 school year, Scarlett’s business course will be partnering up with SAIT’s business program. Students will be given the opportunity to be involved in a college level course that they will be credited for as well. It gives students a chance to experience life outside of high school. Because of the high amount of work required for this course, it is common for students to develop new skills as they move out of their comfort zone by taking bigger steps to contribute to the company. In the business course, there are two presidents. Rutu Karvardra, semester one Grade 11 business class president, reveals that: “To select the presidents, [they] go through a proper election. Along with the resume and cover letter, the candidate is asked a few questions, similar to how real life employment would carry out. The business course does something unique as it is one of the few courses in Scarlett in which the teacher, Kitchen, does not play as big of a role as in a class like math or science. In the business class, equality is a very important factor; everyone is considered equal, including the teacher which allows the business course to be a very hands-on course where students guide themselves. In addition to making sure students do not break any CBE or school regulations, Kitchen does his best to support the students in any way he can. Whether it is supportive words or assisting the students with concepts they may not understand, Kitchen remains the backbone of the class. P. Scarlett High School -- FEATURES -- Page 15 Canada’s Syrian refugees: psychology of resettlement By Eima Dafalla Now war torn and uninhabitable, Syria is no longer seen as a safe home to many Syrians. Syria is in a dangerous state, leaving Syrians most likely to flourish anywhere but Syria. According to the Syrian Centre for Policy Research the total number of casualties is approximately 470 000 killed (as of February 2016). Millions of Syrians are continuing to be displaced from their home country because of ongoing conflict. As the number of Syrians finding refuge in different countries increases, it is important to open up a conversation that is not discussed as much as it should be. That is, what exactly happens to refugees after they arrive to their new homes, particularly in countries in North America, such as Canada. It is important to ask how Syrians as refugees in Canada, and if there is more going on in their minds after arriving to safety. There is evidence to suggest that Syrian Refugees face negative psychological effects after arriving to Canada. According to Lipson, author of Afghan Refugees in California: Mental Health Issues, “refugees are a particularly vulnerable population that is at risk for mental health problems for a variety of reasons: traumatic experiences in and escapes from their countries of origin… culture conflict, and adjustment problems in the country of resettlement, and multiple losses [such as] family members, country, and way of life.” When Syrian refugees are examined with the same lens, this is, in fact, true. As of this year, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has released statistics stating that over 3 million Syrians have fled Syria to immediate neighbours: Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan. These three countries would be considered safer in terms of cultural adjustment and psychological well-being since they are also Arab countries. It is important to note, however, that in most cases, Syrians are being put into a position where they do not even consider things like cultural adjustment, but instead just the safety of themselves and their families. Some countries in North America, particularly Canada, have recognized this and are willing to accept Syrian refugees. According to citizenship and immigration Canada, over 18 800 Syrian refuges have arrived in Canada (as of February 2016). Canada is a very new environment to many of the refugees that have one who has lived through war has high chances of being traumatized. Trauma looks different for everyone based on many things like, age and gender. For example, infants tend to cling more to their mothers and display behaviours that are not common for their age. These include, frightened facial expressions, fear of darkness or sleeping alone, and little social interaction. Children from the ages 6 to 11 years old tend to develop more symptoms of anxiousness and depression. Children in this age group are also more likely to Photo by Eima Dafalla Canada greets the Syrian refugees with a new flag and a new way of life arrived, which puts them at a great risk for developing mental health issues. Although it is a statistically small number of refugees currently in Canada, the psychology of Syrian refugees in Canada is especially important to understand. The first step in addressing psychological issues in Syrian resettlement, is acknowledging the psychological issues that Syrians are bringing with them. There are some mental health issues that are more common among refugees. These include post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), related depression symptoms, sleeping difficulties, nightmares, and survival guilt (War Trauma in Refugees: Claudia Maria Vargas, PhD). These issues all seem to be as a result of one source: trauma. Virtually every- develop PTSD because they are still in the early stages of development. Adolescents show effects of trauma for a much longer time. They develop feelings of being frozen in time, and feel as though they will not have a prosperous future. Adults who are traumatized often suffer from hypervigilance, emotional numbing, and flashbacks or re-experiencing the trauma. Both adolescents and adults also often experience suicidal thoughts after becoming traumatized. From this, it is clear that Syrian refugees bring many psychological effects of trauma with them. Once the process of resettlement happens there are other psychological concerns that Syrians will face. By looking at the major differences between the way of life in Canada and the way of life in Syria, it may be easier to figure out how Syrian refugees are psychologically feeling about these differences. The most obvious and important difference is language. The majority of Syrians entering Canada speak Arabic and will have English as their second language. Something like a language barrier creates many chances for psychological distresses. According to a study done by Ellen Eun Kyoo Kim and Anna S. Matilla, at the Pennsylvania State University, “emotional responses that ESL [speakers] experience most frequently [are] anxiety, fear, and embarrassment. It can be hard to have the confidence to speak when you feel like no one will understand. Many times ESL speakers underestimate their abilities to communicate which makes them feel anxious and scared. The embarrassment comes from thoughts like “they think I’m stupid” or “I can’t even understand them.” In many cases a language barrier could lead to serious psychological conditions like depression and anxiety. It could also lead to alienation (the state or experience of being isolated in any form from society). Often times its not the people who alienate newcomers, but instead the newcomers alienate themselves from society. A result of this alienation is loneliness. After arriving in Canada, it is common for refugees to feel as though they are alone even without alienation. In a recent study, researchers showed lonely and non-lonely people images of other people in pleasant and unpleasant settings. They found that when the non-lonely people were shown the pleasant pictures they had more brain activity in the ventral striatum. When lonely people were shown the same pleasant images, they showed less activity in that region compared to the nonlonely people. The ventral striatum plays a large role in learning and is also part of the reward centre of the brain. According to researchers at the University of Chicago, when examining this area of the brain of refugees who feel lonely, their ventral striatum shows lower activity. Because this region of the brain is also important for learning, the ability to adjust faster to a new country could be more difficult for refugees, as it requires critical learning skills. Culture shock is something that refugees will undoubtedly face as they start to adjust to their new environment. Culture shock is usually a process that happens over the course of weeks and even months. It takes time for newcomers to understand that the certain ways of thinking that may or may not have been accepted in their countries, may or may not be accepted in Canada. Once someone is in the state of culture shock, however, it psychologically takes its toll on him or her. Culture shock occurs as the result of anxiety from losing familiar cultural signs and symbols (e.g. words, gestures, facial expressions, customs and norms). There are many cultural differences between Syria and Canada. For example, in Syria it is not appropriate for men and women to shake hands. This is also something true of many other Arab countries. In Canada, however, it is very common for everyone, no matter the gender, to shake hands when greeting each other. Something as simple as this can trigger a person to experience culture shock. There are four major stages of culture shock that all activate psychological changes. The first phase is the honeymoon phase. When the Syrian refugees first arrive to Canada they will more than likely be thrilled to find a safe new home. During this phase the refugees experience feelings of excitement and happiness. This phase tends to last the shortest as after a short time, they will start to miss Continued on Page 23 March 2016 -- Scarlett FEVER -- Dr. E. P. From the famed portraits lining the renowned halls of the Louvre to the inventive masterpieces of modernity at the Centre Pompidou, no aesthetic is left untouched. As fountains, sculptures, and graffiti-covered walls contrast with ancient feats of architecture at every turn, it is arguable that the city itself is a piece of interactive artwork. While walking down the streets of Paris, it is not uncommon to inhale the enticing scent of freshly baked pastries wafting from a nearby bakery, or the floral fragrance of a café covered with flowers. However, these scents are often punctuated with the smokiness of a Parisian cigarette, or with a whiff of sewage. That being said, the scent of Paris is continually shifting, and can morph from repulsive to heavenly in a matter of seconds; this only adds to the illusion that Paris is ever-shifting and holds an unimaginable adventure Nutella: 1. The scent of freshly baked bread wafts from a nearby bakery, tinged with cigarette smoke blown from the mouths of passersby, and the espresso on the table is anything but disappointing. Such is the quintessential Parisian experience, and such an experience should be on the bucket-list of anyone with an interest in European travel. Known as both the “City of Love” and as the “City of Light,” Paris is a destination universally recognized for its beauty, romanticism, and rich history. These traits, combined with the outstanding pastries and incredible coffee, make Paris irresistible to any student with even an ounce of wanderlust running through their veins. Scarlett High School -- FEATURES -- Page 18 The consequences lack of sleep can have on the body By Devyn Mitchell Sleeping issues are becoming increasingly common, especially amongst teens. The recommended amount of sleep in order for teens to function best is between 8-10 hours per night, but the average amount of sleep teens receive per night is between 7-7.5 hours. Repeatedly not getting enough sleep can cause a variety of problems, both mentally and physically. A few of these problems include simply looking tired, in addition to performing poorly, feeling moody, and consuming more sugar, which all have the potential to lead to bigger problems later on in life. Depression is also an incredibly important effect that can stem from a lack of sleep. Many find that by getting more sleep they are able to eat healthier and manage stress more effectively. One of the most common reasons as to why teens do not sleep is the stress that keeps them up at night, which is typically associated with homework. Many are working part-time jobs, and are also involved in sports or other extra-curricular activities, making it incredibly difficult for people to find time during the day to complete homework or other assigned tasks. In many cases, they feel inclined to stay up and finish any work or studying they may have, which, as a result, leaves them feeling tired and moody the following morning. It is likely that this minute, individuals should work on planning ahead, and try to dedicate a small amount of time during their day towards completing any tasks that need to be done. The quality of their work is likely to improve as well, as they are less likely to miss smaller details that they would have if they were half asleep. Small changes like this will leave people feeling more rested and feeling refreshed the next day, which will help them balance the tasks of the day, deal with stressful situations more effectively, and put them in a better mood overall. Photo by Devyn Mitchell Staying up late An exhausted student takes a moment to rest her eyes after a long and day on occasion is definitely not themselves working on into the late hours of a big deal, and aside from making people the night, is that quite often they will choose feel slow and groggy the next morning, is to put work or other assigned tasks off un- not likely to have any adverse effects. Instead of leaving things until the last and physically. On nights when people’s workloads are not very demanding, going to sleep and dealing with their homework or studying in the morning is the best option, and they will be able to focus on individual tasks for longer periods of time after getting a good night’s sleep. A couple of tips for getting more sleep are setting a sleep time and wake time, and trying to stick to it as best as possible, even on the weekend. This will allow people’s bodies to get in sync with their natural sleeping patterns, as well as make it easier for them to fall asleep in the first place. A few foods that are known to help people wind down at night are whole-grain, low sugar, cereals; pretzels; and walnuts or almonds. These are great to eat before bed, as they are low in sugar so will not leave people feeling wired as they are trying to wind down before bed. Studies also show that painting the walls of bedrooms in soft, soothing colours like light grey or beige helps to induce sleep, so if students are looking for a fun do-ityourself project to work on over the weekend with their friends, they should make sure to try it out. This will create a calming environment to come home to. Finally, avoiding electronics, eating, drinking any beverages aside from water, or exercising at least an hour before going to bed, as well as choosing to pick up a book or magazine to read, will all play a huge role in individuals’ efforts to fall asleep. Scarlett High School -- FEATURES -- Page 21 The Paris Conference reaches conclusion to Climate Deal By Grace Stone On December 12, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius confirmed the implementation of the global Climate Deal between 196 of the world’s nations to cut and eliminate greenhouse gas pollution. The conference, which was held in Le Bourget, France, was a negotiation that took place in two weeks of lengthy translations and arguments. The final consensus is that emissions must be reduced to limit global warming to 1.5°C. For over twenty-three years of international attempts under the UN to address the issue of environmental health, the conclusion in December was the first breakthrough. The Climate Deal, as it is known, had been in negotiation for over four years and only the most recent conference had succeeded in its mission. The deal, although not legally binding, required each participating country to submit their greenhouse gas reduction plan to address what changes they will make for a greener future. The annual conference lasts for the duration of two weeks. The first week typically focuses on preparation meetings, technical workshops, and organization. The second week takes place to start the large negotiations. Each negotiation takes place with a senior official or minister of the state hosting the sessions, which was Minister Fabius this year. The host runs over topics planned to discuss the week before and meetings are held. Drafts are created, translations are made, various discussions of details and other consultations are considered, and eventually, an agreement or disapproval is formed. In Canada, Trudeau promised to meet with various premiers within the first 90 days after the agreement was made. The plan Canada decided to implement is to reduce GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions by 30% below the levels that the country produced in 2005 by 2030; the current course of action Canada is taking however will not reach the goal. In 2020 and 2030, Canada is expected to increase emissions by 1% and 8% respectively, and climateactiontracker. org/countries has predicted the country will only follow through with 15% of the emission reduction goal. Policies are being created, such as those regarding the reduction of natural gas-fired electricity, nitrogen fertilizers, and methane emissions from the oil and gas sector to help follow through with the goal, but the website speculates the goal is too ambitious. In the US, the INDC (Intended Nationally Determined Contribution) to the Climate Deal is to reduce GHG emissions to 26-28% below 2005 levels by 2025, and 83% by 2050. The current projection is very plausible as the US has been following the same track since the Clean Power Plan first proposed in 2014. The country has no new goal since changing laws would require the approval from Congress, which would be a lengthy process, and one that is predicted to be disapproved. March 2016 -- Scarlett FEVER Applying winged eyeliner can be a challenge; trying to get the lines straight, getting them not too thick, and making the point sharp is often a difficult task. The following tips should help Lancers achieve that perfect winged eyeliner, with tips for hooded and non-hooded eyes, do’s and do not’s, and product recommendations from drugstore to high-end brands. Make sure to use liquid eyeliner for this look because no matter how sharp the pencil is, a perfectly sharp and straight wing cannot be achieved. Also, a pointy pencil can irritate eyes which will not help in creating this look. Pencil liner is best for lining the waterline and the space under the top lashes and eye. Liquid, felt tip, and gel are best for creating a winged eye look. Recommended drugstore brands include: Revelon Colour Stay Felt Tip Liner, Covergirl ReadySetGorgeous Concealer, and Ecotools Concealer brush. The difference between the two is that hooded eyes are covered by skin when one is looking straight forward. If, when looking straight forward, all or most of the eyelid is showing, the eyes are not hooded. Due to the different eye types, the way one achieves a wing will vary. This would lead the Syrian refugees to phase two. The culture shock phase, or phase two, usually lasts the longest. The feelings of happiness and excitement wear off and are replaced with anger and fear. At this stage refugees realize that they are different than everyone else which causes the fear and anger. Refugees might feel homesick and if they do not speak English, the symptoms of culture shock last even longer. During the culture shock phase, refugees could feel helplessness, fear and boredom. After about a year, we will see refugees go into what is called the adjustment phase, phase three. In this phase, they will start to get used to their new environment. They will start to see life as normal again and develop a routine. The final stage is called the mastery stage. This is the time when refugees will reach a point when they finally feel comfortable with the new culture. During this stage most refugees change their mindset and believe that Canada is their home away from home. Syria has proven to provide no safety and this has caused the displacement of millions of Syrians. More and more Syrian refugees are choosing to settle in very new environments like Canada. People tend to think that once refugees settle in new countries, their issues no longer exist, but often times this is not the case. Settling in a new country as a refugee can have many psychological impacts that have long term effects. On top of already existing war trauma that Syrians bring with them, they face more difficulties once they arrive to Canada. Refugees of all ages face some sort of psychological distress including, alienation due to language barriers, changes in the ventral striatum of the brain, and culture shock. Although settling in Canada can be psychologically difficulty, after a period of time resettled refugees find peace and joy. March 2016 -- Scarlett FEVER -- Dr. E. P. P. Scarlett High School -- March 2016 The 88th Academy Awards 2016: DiCaprio’s first Oscar By Zainab Warraich Anticipation and excitement heightened as entertainment fans around the globe directed their interest towards the annual Oscar awards of 2016. The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, are prestigious awards given to recognize cinematic achievements. The 88th Academy Awards of 2016 had various surprises and setbacks. Academy Awards always begin with an excellent opening monologue. It seems that the global audience’s opinions seem to be in conflict with Chris Rock’s hosting style. Rock, also known as Christopher Juilius “Chris” Rock III, is a popular comedian. Despite this popularity, with Rock as a host, the Academy Awards hit an eight-year low viewer rating and the thirdlowest viewership of the Oscars ever. Rock discussed controversial topics about black nominations throughout the ceremony, which may have been a contributing factor to the Oscars receiving 34.3 million views, 9.4 million views less than 2014. While earning a great amount of criticism, Rock was still able to receive enormous numbers of laughs. His hosting still seemed to live up to the hype of the Oscars as the award ceremony began. The Oscars began at 5:30 pm on February 28, but the nominees for each category were announced a month earlier. The Revenant, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, received the most nominations, with Mad Max: Fury Road, directed by George Miller, coming in second. Although Mad Max: Fury Road had been nominated in fewer categories, they were awarded with six Academy Awards in the following categories: Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Production Design, Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing, surpassing The Revenant in all six of those categories. The Revenant received three awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Directing, and Best Cinematography. Despite the fact that they had won fewer awards, the climax of the award show was the award of Best Actor given to the lead actor of The Revenant. Leonardo DiCaprio, a famous actor and film producer, finally won his longawaited Academy Award. After twenty-five years in the entertainment industry and five previous Academy Award nominations, DiCaprio finally claimed victory on his first Academy Award for Best Actor. When the 41-year old actor was called up to stage, not only did he receive the Oscar, but also a standing ovation. On February 28, many films, and their actors, won many Academy Awards but one of the biggest highlights was when the film Spotlight claimed victory for the Best Picture with The Revenant and The Big Short finishing behind. Other winners in- cluded Brie Larson in Room for Best Actress in a Leading Role, Mark RySpies for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, and Alicia Vikander in The Danish Girl for Best Actress ed Feature Film Category. The other nominations for this category included Anomalisa, Boy and the World, Shaun the Sheep Movie, and When Marnie Was There. The last eight Oscars were awarded to the following: Amy for Best Documentary (Feature), A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness for Best Documentary (Short Subject), Son of Saul for Best Foreign Language Film, The Hateful Eight for Best Music (Original Score), the song “Writing’s On The Wall” from the film Spectre for Best Music (Original Song), Bear Story for Best Short Film (Animated), Edited by Zainab Warraich Stutterer for Best Short Uju (Noah) Ezeaka, Grade 10, wishes she could win an Oscar Film (Live Action), Ex Machina for Best Visual Effects, and The Big Short for Best Writing in a Supporting Role. NYFW: ALEXANDER WANG FALL 2016 - Alexander Wang presented his Fall 2016 collection at the annual New York Fashion Week in mid-February. The stunning display was held at St. Bartholomew Church in NYC. The venue’s modest atmosphere contrasted Wang’s edgy 80s and 90s inspired looks. This collection focused mainly on black and white patterns paired with pink, purple and blue pastels which enticed the audience to await his next piece. The soft, simplistic faces of the models collided nicely with the dark, busy textures of the collection which created eye-catching looks. Dyed hair with messy layers intensified the pieces. Leather skirts, faux fur tops, and oversized sweatshirts with graphics and bold texts such as “tender” and “strict” were this season’s highlights along with bright beanies, sheer tights, and dark footwear. Metallic accessories and accents on the bottom seam of distressed skirts were also added. Wang’s soundtrack arrangement involved hip hop and dj style influences that set a street-wear like tone to the show. DJ Baauer’s new single “Temples” (ft. English rap artist M.I.A, and Korean rap artist GDragon) was featured at the beginning of the show. Paired along with the first few looks, this feature song evoked an edgy streetwear atmosphere which continued throughout the show. LONDON FW: ALEXANDER MCQUEEN AW 2016 - Alexander McQueen’s Autumn / Winter 2016 women’s wear collection was featured during London Fashion Week in late February. The show evoked a dreamy, spellbound theme. The venue’s dark walls and off-white hardwood flooring accentuated fairly feminine pieces which played off subtle masculine notes. Small butterfly, lips, and clock motifs, floral and delicate prints were a constant theme within this collection. The show began with nappa leather gloves and small silver chains paired with silk backed wool coats, bold images of butterflies, clocks and owls maintaining a dreamy, feminine look. As the show progressed, sheer evening wear inspired point d’esprit dresses were revealed. Dreamy, midnight blue and pale, vanity pink butterfly and floral patterns overlapped the sheer black fabric of these dresses. Masculine inspired coordination’s such as black tuxedo coats with strong forties shoulder and deconstructed, overlapped lapel paired with narrow black trousers contrasted against the constant dreamy, feminine theme. Sheer nude dresses and long capes were elaborately embellished with sequins and tiny gold and silver beads. Nappa leather corsets hand painted with night flowers overlapped tiered and ruffled silk skirts. Towards the end of the show, delicate 3D lavender coloured butterflies swarmed nude and pale pink eiderdown coats. The hairstyles of the models were a messy, bedhead look which had been loosely pinned back with several silver and gold hairpins. Long, thin silver chains gently hung from choker necklaces, winged ear cuffs, and jeweled earrings added to the overall theme. The models nude lips and soft complexions accentuated their dramatic, smokey eyes which completed each look. March 2016 -- Scarlett FEVER Finish the Lyric -- Dr. E. P. Somehow however, director Sam Mendes’, arguably most successful film, American Beauty was the most critically lauded film of the year. Since the release of Mendes’ 1999 film, American Beauty the director has seen many highs and lows including the success, Skyfall and the -- Scarlett FEVER box office disaster, Revolutionary Road, but it’s the 2000 Best Picture Oscar winner, American Beauty that has truly stood the test of time. The film stars Kevin Spacey, now famous for the Netflix original series, House of Cards as the 40 year old Lester Burnham, a suburban father and husband who feels he has lost his reason to be alive, without knowing why. His mid-life crisis leads him to developing a crush on his daughter’s best friend, played by Thora Birch and Mena Suvari respectively. As -- Dr. E. P. The film also contains a romantic subplot involving Lester’s daughter and the teenage next door neighbour, Ricky Fitts played by The Hunger Games’ Wes Bentley. At the time of release, American Beauty was released to universal acclaim. It claimed the Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography Oscars at the 2000 Academy Awards. It also had a total box office return of 350 million dollars on a 15 million dollar budget. Due to its’ massive success, critically and money-wise. Although it can be argued that at t imes the Academy of Motion Pic- tures Arts and Science awards mediocre films, proven by the 2006 winner for Best Picture, Paul Haggis’ Crash, American Beauty does not belong in that category. Although there are some considerable flaws in the film, it is the main performance from Spacey that really pushes the film to the next level. Of course it can be argued that a great director is the one who makes performers capable of having a great performance, due to Spacey’s impressive filmography, including an Academy Award for supporting actor in The Usual Suspects. His performance as a depressed middle-aged father is what gives the film its’ heart when things are looking down. It is his subtle acting in scenes where he spots Suvari’s teenage cheerleader the first time that truly capture what a talent Spacey is. Mendes’ skill with actors is abun- -- March 2016 dantly evident in American Beauty. Birch, a former child actress (Patriot Games), glimmers with grownup radiance, while Suvari (American Pie) uncovers the self-loathing that Angela tries to hide. Bentley emerges as a major find, able to hold his own with Spacey, Bening and Cooper, who gives the colonel untapped reserves of passion. As these characters struggle viciously -- and hilariously -- to escape the middle-class doldrums, the film also evinces a real and ever more stirring compassion. As it detects increasingly vital signs of life behind the absurd surfaces that Mendes presents so beautifully, the film takes on a gravity to match its evil zest. There’s a haunting power to Lester’s last narrative note to the viewer: that if they don’t share the film’s piercing vision of what really matters, someday they will. Rihanna’s hard “Work” shows in her eighth studio album by Cleo Williams The long-awaited album of Barbadian songstress Rihanna, titled ANTI, was released on January 28, 2016 and quickly rose to the top of the charts. In the first fifteen hours of its release, it was downloaded 1.4 million times and was streamed more than 14 million times on the music website TIDAL. The high interest in such a short time made ANTI the fastest album to reach platinum status in history. What drew fans old and new to support this album so unapologetically is quite simply the music. Rihanna revealed her life more intimately in this album than any of her seven others before. Although Rihanna does not write her own songs, she did work closely with writers, including Grammy-winning song-writer James Fauntleroy, to make sure the album fit well with her brand and her emotions. The opening track on the album is titled “Consideration” and it features the rising R&B star SZA. With a hypnotic bass beat and insightful lyrics, Rihanna and SZA deliver a song that opens a window into the life of the multimillion dollar singer. Singing “I got to do things my own way darling,” Rihanna takes a jab at those who try to control her and her music, making sure they know they cannot control either. This track is followed by the interlude “James Joint” that focuses on a dysfunctional relationship yet lightens it up with a twinkling beat. The third track, “Kiss it Better,” takes a different approach using guitars in the back for a more epic sound. The song brings attention to the attempt at rekindling a love that is close to ending. Rihanna sings “Are you, you here, here to take me back,” confessing that there is a relationship she is ready to give another shot to. The single of the album comes next and features Drake. The track, titled “Work,” is by far the most probable candidate to be a radio hit. The song can be just as easily played for dancing as for studying, making it a fun jam to listen to anywhere. Rihanna sticks to the same theme of a love that is not quite working out and brings this to life in the lyrics “All that I wanted from you was something that I never had.” She continues onto the chorus repeating the word work emphasising that her work has taken priority over romance in her life. Drake’s cut in the song is an attempt to sway this lifestyle in a different direction. The Torontonative raps “You need to get done at work come over,” in pursuit of being ranked before Rihanna’s career, in the end losing out. Allin-all the song is an exposé on the amount of work that goes into creating an album and being an artist in general. “Desperado” conflicts with the reality of having no time for romance in “Work” by expressing the desire to be a runaway explained in a somewhat old western story. Often new shows appear, while League: The New Frontier; Mean Girls; Scooby-doo and the Goblin King; X-men: Days Of Future Past; The Looney, Looney, Looney Bugs Bunny Movie; How To Train Your Dragon 2; Glee (season 5 )and Transformers: Age Of Extinction. Some other notable films include: Justice mer of 2014. Shomi has quickly gained in popularity. Again there are so many new additions coming out that all of them cannot be listed. The best one coming out in March is the entire series of Ruby Gloom. This show is amazing. It is about a girl named Ruby living in a gothic mansion with her friends. Everyone looks goth and unhappy, but that is not the case. Ruby manages to be okay with anything despite the bad luck she has. Some of the other most notable shows out in March on Shomi are: Little Bear (entire series); Tyrant (season 1); iZombie (season 1); Baby Daddy (seasons 1-3); and Monsters. The most recent of all the TV and movie sites is Crave TV. It is like the other two, just without movies. All of the shows making their way onto Crave TV in March are: Salem (season 1); Intruders (season 1); Third Watch (seasons 1-3); My So-called Life (entire series); Enlightened (entire series) and Parade’s End (season 1). If any of these shows or movies sound appealing, get cozy, make some popcorn, and have a marathon. If nothing sounds watchable, there is a more extensive list on their websites. These three sites have enough for everyone, regardless of their taste. -- Continued from page 9 ENTARTAINMENT -- Page 30 rather than overly lecturing his children and, by extension, the readers. Scarlett for feeder school Junior High students By Matthew Tuckey Jazz on Canterbury is an annual jazz concert hosted by Dr. E.P. Scarlett and Jonathan Bell in the school theatre. The concert is an opportunity for junior high students interested in playing band in high school to watch Scarlett bands perform. “Jazz on Canterbury is pretty much a night where Scarlett shows off to all the Junior High bands to make them want to join our program,” says Owen Guo, Grade 11, fourth trumpet in Jazz 1. Jazz 3 was followed by Nickle, Fairview 2, and Fairview 1. Fairview 1 was missing their drummer, and their teacher Phil Rounding sat in and played the drums to an attentive crowd. All bands learned that playing on the Scarlett stage is very hot, due to the lack of air-conditioning. The first part of the night was concluded by Jazz Combo, who played “Blue Ronda a la Turk.” Jazz Combo is made up of Maxime Perron, Grade 11, on the stones,” and “Swing Low Sweet Chariot.” Panabaker, Robert Warren, and Louis Riel played after Jazz 2. All feeder schools to Scarlett are also invited to participate and play their songs that night. The junior high schools who participated this year were: Panabaker, Nickle, Fairview’s two bands, Louis Riel, and Robert Warren. The bands performing from Scarlett were as follows: Jazz 1, Jazz 2, Jazz 3, and Jazz Combo. All Scarlett bands meet twice before or after school every week. The night began with Jazz 3 performing “Cool Cat Carl,” and “Buffalo Wings.” Jazz 3 is the newest band at Scarlett, and is comprised of Grade 10 students who are new to Scarlett. Scarlett High School -- March 2016 Scarlett wins gold at Alberta International Band Festival By Matthew Tuckey As the Alberta International Band Festival came to a close on Monday February 23, the bands from Scarlett left the week of performances dates with gold awards. Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band all brought back a gold plaque. The Symphonic Band rocked the performance, earning the award for the “Best Brass Section” in Calgary. The Alberta International Band Festival is an annual competition held in Calgary and Edmonton. Many bands in the province play during this festival, and it is mainly a way for bands to compare themselves with others to judge how well they can play their songs, as well as get help from professional musicians. There are two bands at Scarlett: Wind Ensemble and Symphonic. Symphonic is the largest band, made up of all the grade eleven and twelve band students in the class. The other is Wind Ensemble, which is a smaller, audition-based band. The students in Wind Ensemble also play in Symphonic. At the Alberta International Band Festival, the Wind Ensemble played grade 5 music, whereas Symphonic played a step lower in grade four. Wind Ensemble left for the festival on the morning of February 22, missing the first two periods and lunch. The band arrived at the Rozsa Centre at the University of Calgary. For over forty years, Choralfest has provided the community with knowledgeable mentors and in-depth programs. The annual event features choirs of all levels and abilities, its main purpose is to foster learning and provide assistance and advice to the participating choirs. Each choir is able to receive helpful feedback, and encouragement from renowned evaluators. This year, Dr. Laurier Fagnan and Dr. Jerry McCoy were the evaluators of the E.P Scarlett Choir. Fagnan, director of the Vocal Acoustics Lab of U of A, has won numerous national prizes for choir singing in both Canada and the US. From Vancouver to Paris, Fagnan has spoken in over 400 workshops around the world. McCoy, Music Director for Schola Cantorum in Texas, has been a guest conductor in thirty nine states in the US. The first performance was the song, “Muie Rendera.” This Portuguese song is quite popular in Brazil. For a week, Page 35 -- SPORTS The Flames were quite the busy team on and leading up to the NHL Trade Deadline. The Flames made a total of four trades in the week leading up to the February 29, 3pm Eastern Time Deadline. Flames general manager Brad Treliving did an excellent job in assessing the return prices on his players while still keeping in mind the long term picture. The first trade was on February 22 when the Calgary Flames dealt centre Markus Granlund to the Vancouver Canucks for winger Hunter Shinkaruk. It is rare that two division rivals such as Calgary and Vancouver complete a transaction, but when two general managers find a fit they like that benefits their team, they will do it. The trade sort of came out of nowhere as Granlund was contributing some solid ice-time in the diploma exam preparation -- Scarlett FEVER bottom six for Calgary, and Shinkaruk was lighting up the American Hockey League (AHL) for Vancouver’s farm team, the Utica Comets. This trade was simply a matter of organizational depth. Vancouver clearly felt they were lacking a young centreman that could develop into a third line centre with stellar two-way abilities. The Flames did not feel like they had enough scoring wingers flowing through their system and Treliving addressed that issue acquiring the Calgary native, Shinkaruk. This deal can benefit both sides moving forward, but Shinkaruk looks like he has the skill to develop into a game-changer; therefore, Calgary might get the slight edge if one is asking who won the deal. The second half of the game consisted of the team effortlessly playing without even breaking a sweat. McClimans and Haubrich performed constant passes and assists to each other, dominating the court. The third quarter ended with Beaverbrook being twenty-five points behind Scarlett, and the team tried their best to catch up. In encouragement, Beaverbrook began repeatedly chanting “Defense!” Our opponents cheered hopefully for their team. Their crowd’s voices eventually overpowered ours; however, Scarlett’s confidence and skills were unwavering, and we stayed ahead throughout the game. The game ended with Scarlett winning with eighty points and Beaverbrook losing with thirty-seven points. “We are starting to work better together and I hope this momentum will continue on for the next few games,” said Amjad. Despite their formidable win, the players have managed to stay humble throughout all of it. In an interview with the FEVER, Amjad, mentions that it could not have happened without the hard work and dedication everyone, including the coaches, has put in. While the game was competitive, it was also friendly since the two Junior Boys teams were well acquainted and many are friends with their opponents from Lord Beaverbrook. Many of the players even went to the same junior high, so it was a fun game for both sides despite the outcome of the game. This is Scarlett’s second win of the season, with the first being against Bishop Carrol High School. Unfortunately, Scarlett has lost four of its other games, which were against Bishop O’Byrne, Western Canada, Centennial, and St. Mary’s. In Calgary, Scarlett’s Junior Boys team is in the first division, proving their tremendous skill. With only a few points below their opponents, they are ranked fifth south of the city. Scarlett faced Ernest Manning on February 18 for their seventh game, two days after their game with Beaverbrook. It was an extremely intense game, as Scarlett would have lost if it were not for a last minute three-pointer. This marks Scarlett’s third win of the season; however, they suffered an unfortunate loss with their game against Centennial the following week. On February 29, Scarlett left victorious against Western Canada with a close one-point win. Playoffs will be occurring in the beginning of March; however, it is uncertain which teams will be making it that far. All in all, it has been a very triumphant season and the FEVER wishes the team good luck. Keeping up with Scarlett’s Junior Girls Basketball team By Devyn Mitchell Dr. E.P. Scarlett’s Junior Girls basketball team is nearing the end of another incredible basketball season. This season has been full of ups and downs, but the Junior Girls have managed to stay humble throughout it all. They are currently sitting in sixth place, following William Aberhart, Western Canada, St. Francis, Bishop Carroll, and Centennial, who is currently in first place. With City Championships on March 11, there is no telling who will win this title. Scarlett’s Junior Girls team consists of 11 players: Liv Lopez, #4; Anastasia Morrison, #5; Katie Noble, #6; Hailey Prosser, #7; Bronwyn Terrant, #8; Katie Demyon, #10; Kaylee Redelback, #11; Valeria Acosta, #12; Kinsley Lowen, #13; Chloe Roy, #14; all Grade 10’s, and Jayme Allard, #23, Grade 11. The Lancers played against Western Canada’s Junior Girls team on Tuesday, February 23, but ended up losing with a final score of 49-34. It was a close game, but Western’s Junior Girls pulled through in the end. Scarlett’s girls put in a valiant effort, and finished the game only 15 points behind their opponents. Lopez, Grade 10, explained their season, “A lot of our games were ‘could have’ games. We ‘could have’ passed more, we ‘could have’ worked more as a team, or we ‘could have’ played harder in general. I would say that this was one of the things that made our losses so disappointing.” In a recent interview with Lopez, she told The FEVER that the Junior girls have really bonded over the course of the season. “We’ve come a long way. Since we’re 90% Grade 10’s, with one Grade 11 [student], we’ve really gotten to know each other and how we play. We’ve become bet- ter in almost all areas, for example, shooting, defence, and other things like that.” When asked whether she When asked who their biggest competition was, Lopez immediately answered with Aberhart. “William Aberhart was probably our biggest competition, because they’re on the same level as us as far as skills go. We’ve lost to Aberhart twice now, both times by only nine points. We’ve always been so close, and then it’s just gone away, Photo by Devyn Mitchell which is why I’d say they were definitely Demyon #10, Allard #23, and Noble #6 run up court our biggest competition.” This season, the Junior planned on trying out for the team next year, Lopez said she was un- Girls have lost six of their games, sure. “I’m thinking about whether and won three. Their third win was against Bishop O’Byrne’s Junior Girls team, and the final score of that game was 47-37, on February 19, 2016. They also had the opportunity to travel to Edmonton for a tournament in February. “It was three days, from Thursday to Saturday, and it was just so much fun. We got to know each-other a lot better, and we spent a lot of time together. We really played as a team during that trip, and did well in all of our games.” The City Championship game took place at Bishop O’Byrne on Friday, March 11, at five O’clock. Sadly, Scarlett’s Junior Girls did not end up making it to City Finals. That being said, they had a great season, and we hope to see them on the court again next year. Page 37 -- SPORTS -- Scarlett FEVER -- Dr. E. P. Scarlett High School -- March 2016 John Scott and the NHL ASG: a tribute to a dying breed By Matthew Tuckey John Scott is an enforcer. At a height of 6’8”, weighing 260 lbs, he towers over most players on the ice. In his total of 285 games played in the NHL, he has scored only five goals, and assisted six. On the other hand, he has had 43 total fights in the NHL, with three suspensions and 542 penalty minutes. “This guy is a predator, he was set out there to seek and destroy…” said Mike Milbury, the hockey analyst best known for his time playing for the Boston Bruins, where he once climbed into the stands and beat a fan with a shoe; “I believe that players in this league should be able to skate and pass, not simply ignite a fight.” Scott and the entire hockey world were taken by surprise when in January 2016 he was voted as the All-Star captain for the Pacific Division. Scott went on to help win the All-Star Game for the Pacific Division winning $1 000 000 for his teammates, and winning a Honda Prelude by being voted MVP. Scott’s road to becoming captain began on the Internet, on the podcast Marek vs. Wyshynski, when Jeff Marek and Greg Wyshynski were talking about the recent format changes for the upcoming NHL AllStar Game. Players from the Pacific Division and the Central Division would play in a 3-on-3 format to face the winner of the Metropolitan vs. Atlantic Divisions game. The winning division would receive $1 000 000. A total of four players could be voted in by fans as the captains of their divisions. While talking about players they would like to see in the All-Star Game, Wyshynski mentioned Scott’s name. He joked about how funny it would be to see Scott try to keep up with the star players. The idea then got picked up by the Steve Dangle Podcast, and then a campaign was started on Reddit on the subreddit r/hockey. It spread to social media, using #voteforscott by fans to gain publicity. On January 15, after Scott won the All-Star vote as Pacific captain, he was suspiciously traded from the Pacific Division’s Arizona Coyotes to the Atlantic Division’s Montreal Canadiens, and then dropped down to the AHL to play for the St. John’s Ice Caps. “Enforcers don’t get traded midseason when their team is winning. If you know the league, you know that it just doesn’t happen,” said Scott in a Players’ Tribune article he wrote. He said that the NHL pressured him to drop out of the All-Star Game, commenting that the All-Star Game was not for him. The NHL also apparently asked him “Do you think this is something your kids would be proud of?” Scott was traded across the continent while he and his wife were expecting twins. What followed was a massive backlash from fans, including the spamming of NHL social media with #freejohnscott. On January 19, the NHL officially recognized Scott for the first time, even though he had won the vote days earlier. They released a statement saying that Scott would captain the Pacific Division. There was confusion about what jersey Scott would wear during All-Star weekend. Since he was not playing for the Coyotes anymore, he could not wear their jersey. He was also playing for the St. Johns for my hockey team, so that factors in to it and makes it hard to be competitive in games like this. It is what it is.” Sidney Crosby, arguably the best hockey player in the world, has not ever attended an All-Star Game. Scott’s campaign is not the first of its kind. In 2007 there was an online campaign to vote in defenseman Rory Fitzpatrick into the All-Star Game. Fitzpatrick did not win the vote; however, many believe that the NHL rigged the vote to make sure he would not make it to the All-Star Game. Rory was a player like Scott: not very skilled but beloved by his teammates. In 2015, fans from Latvia voted in a Latvian named Zemgus Gerginsons, though Gerginsons is not considered a skilled player by any means. In 2009 Mike Komisarek was voted in because Montreal Canadiens’ fans stuffed the ballot box with his name simply because he played for the Montreal Canadiens. In both cases nothing suspicious ever took place, and the NHL seemed to embrace them in the game. The treatment of John Scott by the NHL is one which is becoming ever more common to enforcers like Scott. Enforcers have played a large part in the game of hockey for decades. Despite a couple of close games, the team did not win any of their ten matches. The girls are in the first division for Calgary, consisting only of the top high schools. The games were definitely challenging, and the team consistently tried their best at every game. Undeterred by the results of their games, the girls continue keep a positive and upbeat attitude. Despite the results, the Senior Girls Basketball team showed great sportsmanship and effort this season. Andrew Rasmussen, a physics teacher at Scar- lett, coaches for the team and is extremely proud of them all. We, the FEVER, also agree with him. The girls played their first game of the season on December 8 against St. Mary’s. Even though it ended in a lost, the game was one of the most memorable as everyone was excited for the upcoming basketball season and more tournaments to come. Scarlett then faced Bishop Carroll, unfortunately losing by 35 points. The following game against Sir Winston Churchill was extremely close, with Scarlet losing merely over a few points. The game ended with 59 points for Bishop O’Byrne and only 38 for the girls. The Lancers showed perseverance throughout the game but ultimately lost. Their game against Bishop Grandin on February 18 was brutal, leaving Scarlett with a score of 38 and Grandin with 68 points. It was another crushing defeat against Western Canada on February 23, with Scarlett losing by 35 points, a low blow compared to their opponent’s 88 points. The team’s most recent game was also against Western Canada, making this their second time facing against the school, with Scarlett losing by more than half the score of their opponents. This basketball season has been rough for the Senior Girls. The team tried their best and showed areas of both strength and weaknesses. Although they have not won any of their games, a lot of courage, skill and determination was shown in every game by the girls. Jackson Howe, also MVP of the game, scored the first basket with an impressive dunk and set the mood of the crowd with wild anticipation. The audience was left on the edges of their seats, hoping that this point was only one of the many to come later that period. Throughout the first period, Howe scored the majority of baskets made, rewarding the team greatly and contributing to the team’s existing sportsmanship. By this time, the Lancers had immense momentum that rapidly got stronger throughout the rest of the game. As third period rolled in, it was clear Scarlett’s excellent performance was soon going reward them with the win of the night, placing far ahead against Beaverbrook, with a score of 79 for the home and 69 for guests. The Lancers commenced fourth period with a foul but soon scored the first point of the period, and concluded the game with the last basket. The game ended with a win for the Lancers, with a score of 101 for Scarlett and 84 for Beaverbrook. Scarlett is currently in fifth place for Senior Boys basketball in Southern Calgary, and the team looks forward to improving their current rankings after their next game with rival school Earnest Manning in late February. Coach McCilimans “hope[s] to have high levels of intensity [at Scarlett’s next game] as Earnest Manning is very competitive and plays very well.” As of now, this is Scarlett’s fifth win of the season, and The Scarlett FEVER has no doubt that there are more wins to come. Senior Boys Basketball team get their head in the game By Eima Dafalla and Tajmee Ali On Tuesday, February 16, Dr. E.P. Scarlett’s Senior Boys’ Basketball team reiterated their exceptional athletic abilities in their sixth game of the season, against the Lord Beaverbrook Lords. With a combination of the team’s remarkable athletic capabilities and good sportsmanship, it is no surprise that Scarlett’s Senior Boys’ team defeated Lord Beaverbrook by 17 points, the final score amounting to 101-84. Initially, the game held at Dr. E.P. Scarlett, had the audience watching with immense anticipation, as Beaverbrook was leading the game by a few points. As first period drew to a close, Beaverbrook was in the lead by a single point. The teams maintained a steady pace, with relatively close scores to each other throughout period two and the start of period three. By the third period, Scarlett reached their highest peak of the game, playing tremendously well. “This was achieved by immensely improving their defense,” says Scarlett’s coach, Sean McClimans.
