2011 GOPHER FOOTBALL
MINNESOTA at USC
GOPHER GRID-BITS
u Minnesota is 89-32-6 all-time in season-openers for a winning percentage of .724.
u The Golden Gophers have outscored their last seven season-opening opponents by an average score
of 37.6-17.1 That includes a 23-20 overtime win in 2009 and a 24-17 victory last year.
u Minnesota has played 127 seasons of college football, coming into 2011. Only three other schools -Rutgers (141), Michigan (131) and Navy (130) have played more.
u The Gophers are 25-27 all-time vs. current members of the Pac-12. Minnesota had a winning record
vs. the league prior to this year. But an 0-3 mark vs. Colorado pushed the Gophers under .500.
u Minnesota came from behind in all six of its victories in 2009 and all three in 2010. The last time the
Gophers won a game without trailing was a 17-6 win at Purdue on Oct. 25, 2008.
GOING BACK TO CALI
The University of Minnesota doesn’t have a ton of experience playing on the west coast or in the State
of California. The Gophers are 2-8-1 all-time in California. The two victories both came in the 1960s
-- 21-3 over UCLA in the 1962 Rose Bowl and 26-20 over California in the 1964 season. Included in the
2-8-1 record in California is an 0-2-1 record at USC. Minnesota’s last trip to the Golden State was in
2006, when the Gophers fell to California 42-17.
LAST TIME
Minnesota and USC faced off last season at TCF Bank Stadium, with the Trojans taking a 32-21 victory.
Minnesota struck first and led 7-0 in the first quarter. But the Trojans came back to take a 13-7 lead
at halftime. The Gophers grabbed a 14-13 lead late in the third quarter when Da’Jon McKnight made a
beautiful catch of an Adam Weber aerial for a 31-yard touchdown. But Robert Woods took the ensuing
kickoff back 97 yards for a score for the Trojans, who went on to take a 32-14 lead, before the Gophers
got in the end zone in the final seconds of the game.
USC held the Gophers to just 83 yards on the ground in the contest and out-gained Minnesota 408-307
in total offense. MarQueis Gray tallied four receptions for 98 yards and a touchdown, while McKnight
added three catches for 53 yards and a score. Gary Tinsley led the Minnesota defense with 10 tackles,
while Keanon Cooper chipped in with eight stops.
LAST TIME OUT
(Nov. 27, 2010 - TCF Bank Stadium) -- The University of Minnesota football team ended its 2010 season
with a 27-24 win over Iowa. The Golden Gophers claimed the Floyd of Rosedale trophy, leading for a
majority of the game and making several key plays late in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
With 7:36 remaining and Minnesota trailing 24-20, Adam Weber led the Gophers on a six-play, 77-yard
scoring drive that featured a 19-yard completion to Gray and a 40-yard connection with Da’Jon McKnight. The game-winning drive was capped off by a six-yard touchdown run by Duane Bennett.
Troy Stoudermire helped ice the victory as he forced a Marcus Coker fumble that was recovered by Ryan
Collado with 4:14 remaining. The Gophers picked up a pair of first downs to run out the clock.
Offensively, Minnesota outgained Iowa 382 to 218 and held the ball for 36:06 compared to 23:54. On
the ground, the Gophers were able to rush for a total of 216 yards, the most the Hawkeyes gave up all
season.
Weber, in his 50th-consecutive and final career start for the Gophers, threw for 164 yards on 13-of-25
passing. The game began with the Gophers pulling out all the stops. After an Eric Ellestad 26-yard field
goal on their opening possession, interim head coach Jeff Horton got aggressive. Ellestad recovered his
own onside kick. The Minnesota offense once again made its way down the field, but this time punched
it into the end zone on a 14-yard run by Gray.

HEAD COACH JERRY KILL
Jerry Kill was named head coach of the University of Minnesota football
program on December 7, 2010.
Kill came to Minnesota after spending three seasons on the sidelines at
Northern Illinois University. Kill led the Huskies to three consecutive bowl
games during his tenure. He also coached NIU to a berth the Mid-American
Conference Championship game in 2010. Kill put together a 23-16 record in
his three seasons with the Huskies.
In three seasons, Kill coached two winners of the Mid-American Conference Vern Smith Leadership Award, given annually to the conference’s top
football player. Defensive end Larry English won the award in 2008, Kill’s
first season with the Huskies. Running back Chad Spann was honored as
the conference’s top player in 2010. English went on to be the No. 16 overall choice in the 2009 NFL Draft
and currently plays for the San Diego Chargers.
During the 2010 season, Kill mentored six first-team All-MAC selections. In his three seasons, the Huskies earned 10 first-team all-MAC honors. His 2010 squad ranked No. 7 in the nation in rushing offense,
No. 12 in scoring offense, No. 19 in total offense, No. 14 in scoring defense, No. 26 in total defense, No.
24 in rushing defense and No. 44 in passing defense.
Following the 2010 season, Kill was named the National Coach of the Year by the Fellowship of Christian
Athletes. In 2009, Kill was presented with the National Football Foundation Courage Award by the Chicago Metro Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame.
Kill’s overall collegiate head coaching record stands at 127-73 in 17 seasons. In four stops as a head
coach, he has never left a school with a sub-.500 record. In three of his previous four head coaching
positions, he took over a team with a losing record and turned in a winning season in three years or less.
Prior to serving as the head coach at Northern Illinois, Kill was head coach at Southern Illinois University, an FCS program in Carbondale, Ill. He spent seven years on the Saluki sideline and compiled a
55-32 record. Kill’s record over his final five seasons with Southern Illinois was 50-14 and included five
consecutive NCAA FCS Playoff appearances. Kill was the head coach at Emporia (Kan.) State for two
seasons in 1999-2000. He went 11-11 with the Hornets, who play at the NCAA Division II level. Prior to
coaching at Emporia State, Kill was the head coach at NCAA Division II member Saginaw Valley State
from 1994-1998. He compiled a 38-14 record with the Cardinals.

nine full-time assistants and
head strength and conditioning
coach, the staff has a total of 94
combined consecutive years of

There are only six NCAA Football
Bowl Subdivision head coaches
with more combined consecutive years of service among their assistant coaches.
Perhaps the most impressive statistic when comparing Kill’s staff to the five ranked ahead of it is the
number of different head coaching positions held by the respective coaches on the list. Kill has made
five different head coaching stops -- Saginaw Valley State (Mich.), Emporia (Kan.) State, Southern Illinois, Northern Illinois and Minnesota. Of the other five, two of the head coaches have been at one school
for their entire careers. The other three have only made two head coaching stops.
The following is a look at each of Minnesota’s assistant coaches and their years of service under Jerry
Kill (not including this season): Eric Klein - 17; Tracy Claeys - 16; Rob Reeves - 15; Matt Limegrover - 12;
Brian Anderson - 10; Pat Poore - 10; Jay Sawvel - 10; Jeff Phelps - 3; Jim Zebrowski - 1; Bill Miller - 0.
JERRY’S KIDS
While the Gophers currently only have the NCAA-allotted 105 student-athletes in camp, they have 119 on
their roster, as the other 14 are expected to join the program once the school year begins. Of those 119
players, 78 of them (65.5 percent) are either true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen or sophomores.
The Gophers are only carrying 41 upperclassmen on the roster.
Here’s the full breakdown of each class for the Gophers: Freshmen - 53; Sophomores - 25; Juniors - 21;
Seniors - 20.
128 YEARS AND COUNTING ...
There’s little doubt that the University of Minnesota is one of the most historically significant programs
in all of college football. The Golden Gophers are in their 128th season of collegiate football in 2010.
The Golden Gophers enter the 2010 campaign with an all-time record of 643-452-44 (.583 winning percentage). Minnesota has played the fourth-most seasons in the history of college football. Only Rutgers
(139), Michigan (129) and Navy (128) have played more.
In addition, Minnesota and Wisconsin also take part in the most-played rivalry in college football. The
Gophers and Badgers will square off for the 121st time this fall.
GOPHER CHAMPIONSHIPS
Minnesota has won six national championships and 18 Big Ten titles in the 126-year history of the
Gopher football program.
Bernie Bierman led Minnesota to national titles in 1934, 1935, 1936, 1940 and 1941. The Gophers also
won a national title in 1960 under Murray Warmath.
Minnesota won its first-ever Big Ten title in 1900. The Gophers have a total of 18 Big Ten Championships
in their history: 1900, 1903, 1904, 1906, 1909, 1910, 1911, 1915, 1927, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1937, 1938,

GRAY MATTERS
u Former Gopher quarterback Adam Weber entered the 2010 season as one of the most experienced
quarterbacks in the nation. He ended up his career by starting every game for four years straight and set
a Big Ten record for starts and consecutive starts by a QB with 50. In 2011, enter MarQueis Gray. Gray is
the only signal-caller on the Minnesota roster who has ever taken a snap at quarterback in a collegiate
football game. He has six starts in his career, but all were as a wide receiver. He has not been a starting
quarterback since his senior year in high school.
QUARTERBACK NOTEBOOK
u Gray hauled in 42 receptions for 587 yards and five touchdowns last season as a wide receiver. He
also saw some action as a Wildcat quarterback, rushing 23 times for 110 yards and a TD.
u For his career, Gray has thrown just 23 passes, with eight completions for 86 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
u Gray came to Minnesota as one of the most highly-touted members of the 2008 recruiting class.
However, he didn’t enroll at Minnesota until the January 2009. He was ranked as the No. 3 dual-threat
quarterback in the 2008 recruiting class by Rivals.com and was a U.S. Army High School All-American.
u The only other quarterback on the roster to see game action is Adam Lueck. However, the junior has
only been on the field as a holder for point-after-touchdown and field goal attempts.
u The Gophers also list four other QBs on the roster -- sophomore Moses Alipate, red-shirt freshman
Tom Parish and true freshmen Max Shortell and Dexter Foreman.
u Minnesota is one of just 22 NCAA FBS teams who will have a quarterback making his first start during the 2011 season.
BENNETT’S BACK
u After sharing carries with now-departed DeLeon Eskridge last season, it looks as though Duane Bennett could be the Gophers’ featured back in 2011. Bennett led the team in rushing in the 2009 season
after coming off an ACL injury in 2008. He was second on the team with 529 rushing yards and three
touchdowns last season.
RUNNING BACK NOTEBOOK
u Bennett topped the century mark in a pair of games last season, giving him three total for his career.
He rushed for a career-best 187 in the 2010 season-opener at Middle Tennessee State.
u Bennett also has two 100-yard receiving games (121, Oct. 31, 2009 vs. Michigan State and 100,
Sept. 6, 2008 at Bowling Green). That contest against Bowling Green was where he suffered the ACL
tear. Bennett received a medical hardship waiver for the 2008 season, after playing in just two games.
u Red-shirt freshman Donnell Kirkwood is the only other Gopher to have carried the ball in a collegiate
football game. He saw action in four games last season, before going down with a leg injury and being
granted a medical hardship waiver. He rushed for 107 yards on 27 carries before the injury.
u Three other freshmen -- Lamonte Edwards, David Cobb and Devon Wright -- are also on the roster.
Cobb is a true freshman while the other two are red-shirt frosh.
u Mike Henry is the leading candidate to see time in a fullback/H-Back role for the Gophers in 2011.
McKNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR
u Senior Da’Jon McKnight is the most accomplished wide receiver returning for the Gophers. McKnight
is on the Biletnikoff Award watch list. He hauled in 10 receiving touchdowns last season, nearly tying
the school record of 11 for that category. McKnight was No. 75 in the nation and No. 9 in the Big Ten last
season, averaging 62.5 receiving yards per game. He turned in career-best marks of eight receptions
and three touchdowns vs. Penn State last season.

2011 GOPHER FOOTBALL
RECEIVER NOTEBOOK
GOPHER RADIO NETWORK
u McKnight has three 100-yard receiving games to his credit. Two of those three games were back-toback last season, when he had 123 yards at Purdue and 103 yards vs. Penn State on Oct. 16 and Oct.
23, respectively.
u McKnight’s other century-mark-topping output came in the 2009 Insight Bowl, when he turned in a
seven-reception, career-best 124-yard outing vs. Iowa State.
u Junior wide receiver Brandon Green is the only other wide receiver on the Gopher roster with more than
one reception. He has caught 42 passes (21 each in 2008 and 2009) for 599 yards and two touchdowns in
his career.
u Senior converted cornerback Troy Stoudermire has more career receptions (35) than all the other
Gopher wideouts combined.
u Tight end Eric Lair is is on the watch list for the Mackey Award as the nation’s top tight end. He was
No. 2 among all tight ends in the Big Ten last season in receptions per game with 3.25.
u Lair caught 39 balls for 526 yards and two scores last season. Three of his career-best marks (94
yards, seven receptions, long of 44 yards) all came against Jerry Kill’s Northern Illinois squad last year.
u Senior tight end Collin McGarry and junior-college transfer John Rabe should also see plenty of time.
The Gopher Sports Network presented by AlarmForce distributes
its digital quality audio stream via
satellite to affiliates across the
state of Minnesota. KFAN (100.3
FM) in the Twin Cities will serve as
the flagship station.
EXPERIENCE UP FRONT
u Four of Minnesota’s probable starting five on the offensive line have a good deal of experience. Three
of those linemen are fifth-year seniors -- left guard Chris Bunders, right guard Ryan Orton and center
Ryan Wynn. Left tackle Ed Olson started eight games at that position in 2010. Bunders is by far the
most experienced with 28 career starts coming into the season.
OFFENSIVE LINE NOTEBOOK
u Minnesota returns a combined 47 starts among all its offensive linemen returning from the 2010
season. All of those starts come from the three aforementioned players. Wynn has 14 career starts, while
Orton has been in the starting lineup 10 times.
u Wynn started 13 straight games as a red-shirt freshman. He missed all of 2009 with a back injury
and saw limited action last season.
u Orton has made 10 starts, but only three of those came last season. Six of his starts came when he
was a red-shirt freshman in 2008.
u Red-shirt freshman Jimmy Gjere has the inside track to be the starter at right tackle.
u Head coach Jerry Kill has been very complimentary of true freshman linemen Tommy Olson (brother of
Ed Olson) and Foster Bush. Both may see significant playing time in 2011.
PAPER OR PLASTIC?
u The truthful answer? The Gopher defensive line doesn’t care, just so long as they get some sacks.
Minnesota ranked dead last (No. 120 out of 120 FBS schools) in sacks for the 2010 season, tallying just
nine. Current Gopher defensive linemen have combined for just 9.5 career sacks with 4.5 coming from
senior defensive tackle Anthony Jacobs and 4.0 belonging to junior defensive end D.L. Wilhite. The other
sack belongs to sophomore defensive end Kendall Gregory-McGhee.
DEFENSIVE LINE NOTEBOOK
u While the Gopher defensive line may be short on sacks, it is not light on experience. Minnesota has
nine defensive linemen who have seen action in at least one game. Six of them have played in 12 or
more. They combine for 133 games played and 41 starts.
u Jacobs was the top tackler among the defensive linemen last season, tallying 41 stops. His 6.5
tackles for loss ranked third on the team.
u More than 20 percent of tackles by senior DT Brandon Kirksey are for loss (10.5 of 52).
u Wilhite was named a Freshman All-Big Ten selection by The Sporting News following the 2009 season. He finished the year with three sacks, three tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries (including one
for a score) and one forced fumble.

GOPHERS’ 2011 SCHEDULE
AMONG NATION’S BEST
Minnesota’s 2011 schedule has been ranked by numerous experts as
one of the tougher schedules in the nation. According to Phil Steele,
Minnesota has the No. 21 toughest schedule among all 120 FBS teams.
• Seven of Minnesota’s 11 FBS opponents are either ranked or receiving
votes in either the Associated Press Top 25 or the USA Today Top 25.
Four of those opponents are in the Top 25 in one or both of those polls.
• Eight of Minnesota’s 11 FBS opponents played in bowl games last
season.
• Five of Minnesota’s six FBS opponents that will visit TCF Bank
Stadium played in a bowl game last season.
• Four teams (Miami, Nebraska, Michigan State, Wisconsin) on Minnesota’s 2011 schedule are coming off seasons with 10 wins or more. Two
of those teams (Michigan State and Wisconsin) had 11-win seasons.
• Minnesota’s 2011 opponents averaged nearly eight victories in 2010.

PG. 8
MINNESOTA at USC
GT = HIGH PERFORMANCE
u In the automotive world, GT stands for grand tourer or gran turismo in Italian. They are high-performance luxury automobiles. On the Gopher defense, GT stands for senior linebacker Gary Tinsley, who
plays with a fast motor and often turns in high-performance results. Tinsley led the Minnesota defense
with 90 total tackles in 2010, while starting all 12 games. He recorded career-bests for tackles (14 vs.
Wisconsin) and solo tackles (7 vs. Northwestern) last season. Tinsley had five games with double-digit
tackle numbers last season to give him six for his career.
LINEBACKER NOTEBOOK
u Linebacker may be the deepest position on the Gopher squad. Minnesota had eight linebackers record
tackles during 2010 and all eight return to the team.
u Senior Keanon Cooper tallied 68 stops to rank No. 3 on the team last season.
u Junior Mike Rallis has been bitten by the injury bug throughout his career. Despite playing in just
nine 2010 games, Rallis ranked fourth on the team in TFL (6.0) and led the team in interceptions (3).
u Sophomore Brendan Beal had to sit out last year after transferring from Florida. Beal was a Parade
All-American coming out of Liberty High in Bangor, Pa.
u Junior Ryan Grant has a good football bloodline. His grandfather Bud was a legendary Gopher athlete
and long-time Vikings head coach. His father Mike has coached six state championship teams at Eden
Prairie High School.
STOUDERMIRE’S SWITCH
u Senior cornerback Troy Stoudermire made a successful transition from wide receiver to cornerback
in mid-season last year. He was suspended for the Northern Illinois game (Game 4). When he returned
to the team, he was moved to the secondary. By the end of the season, he ranked No. 6 on the team in
tackles (37), first in pass break-ups (5) and added two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
SECONDARY NOTEBOOK
u Senior safety Kim Royston is finally healthy. After missing the 2010 season with a broken leg suffered
in the spring of 2010, it looked like Royston’s career might be over. But he was granted a sixth year of
eligibility by the NCAA. Royston ranked No. 3 on the team with 86 stops in 2009.
u Senior safety Shady Salamon is also a conversion project from the offensive side of the ball. He came
to Minnesota as a running back and started two games as a true freshman. He moved to safety prior to
the 2009 Insight Bowl. Salamon has never started a game on defense, but should be in the mix in 2011.
u Sophomore Brock Vereen made his first career start vs. USC as a true freshman last season. His
brother Shane played running back for Cal and is now on the roster of the NFL’s New England Patriots.
u Senior cornerback Kyle Henderson started 2 games and tallied 33 tackles last season.
u Junior CB Michael Carter played in just 8 games in 2010, but still had 2 of the Gophers’ 9 INTs.
GETTING HIS KICKS
u Sophomore kicker Chris Hawthorne was the backup at North Carolina State last year. He saw action
in three games for the Wolfpack last season, going 5-of-5 on PATs and adding a field goal against Wake
Forest. He kicked off 17 times with one touchback. Hawthorne was a non-recruited walk-on at NC State
and is therefore, eligible immediately at Minnesota.
SPECIALIST NOTEBOOK
u Sophomore long snapper Jake Filkins saw action in nine games last season, primarily snapping on
punts. He is also a member of the Gopher wrestling squad.
u Junior quarterback Adam Lueck returns after serving as the placekick holder last season.
u Sophomore Dan Orseske returns after holding down the number-one punting spot last season. He
averaged 36.1 yards per punt last season, while dropping 15 punts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line.

TAKE IT TO THE BANK
TCF BANK STADIUM FACTS
When the Gophers hosted the Air
Force Academy on Sept. 12, 2009 it
marked the first time since Nov. 21,
1981 that college football has been
played on campus at Minnesota.
• TCF Bank Stadium was designed as an open-air, horseshoe-shaped
bowl with a collegiate look and feel. The stadium is oriented to take
advantage of the views of downtown Minneapolis.
Minnesota’s 16-13 win over South
Dakota State marked the final game
of the inaugural season at TCF Bank
Stadium. Minnesota put together a
4-3 record in its new home stadium
in the inaugural season.
• The University exceeded its initial fund-raising goal of $86 million.
• The brick façade and arches resemble that of Minnesota’s previous
on-campus football venue, Memorial Stadium, which hosted its final
game on Nov. 21, 1981.
• Construction began on TCF Bank Stadium on July 11, 2007. It took
over 1.3 million work hours to complete the project by July , 2009.
• The main high definition video measures approximately 48 feet high
by 108 feet wide and boasts Daktronics HD-16 technology.
TCF Bank Stadium was the first Big
Ten Stadium built in nearly 50 years.
Beaver Stadium (Penn State) and
Memorial Stadium (Indiana) were
both built in 1960. At the time of
its construction, TCF Bank Stadium
was just the second new stadium built in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) and
the first in a BCS conference since 1998. Akron also christened a brand-new stadium last season.
• The main high definition video board is the third largest in all of
college athletics in terms of square footage. Only Texas and Mississippi
State have larger boards.
• The main video board screen is made up of more than four million
LED lights that if placed end to end would extend for 47.5 miles.
• At the project’s peak, 750 construction workers were working on TCF
Bank Stadium.
• The site of TCF Bank Stadium covers 1,194,645 SF or approximately
27.4 acres.
In May 2006, the Minnesota legislature made the stadium a reality, approving the $288.5 million facility.
The stadium holds 50,805 fans and is an open-air facility. Construction began during the summer of
2007.
• The playing surface is FieldTurf and covers 92,132 SF or approximately 2.1 acres.
TCF Bank Stadium Timeline
• The home locker room at TCF Bank Stadium is 60 yards long by 25
yards wide. It contains 120 cherry wood lockers and is the largest in
both professional and college football.
May, 2006 - Legislature approves new stadium
June, 2007 - Ground broken on TCF Bank Stadium
January, 2008 - First steel rises from ground at stadium site
April 7, 2008 - First brick laid at the stadium site
Spring/Summer, 2009 - Scoreboards and lights in, exterior work finished
Spring/Summer, 2009 - Scoreboards and lights in, exterior work finished
May/June, 2009 - FieldTurf playing surface installed
July, 2009 - University takes occupancy of TCF Bank Stadium
Sept. 12, 2009 - First game at TCF Bank Stadium vs. Air Force.
GOPHER VICTORY WALK
The Golden Gopher football program saw a new tradition take shape in 2007, with the advent of the
“Gopher Victory Walk.”
Prior to each game, the entire Minnesota football team, led by the Minnesota Marching Band, will walk
through the fans on Oak Street and head into TCF Bank Stadium.
Each Gopher Victory Walk will begin two hours and 15 minutes prior to kickoff.
The Minnesota Football program is encouraging fans to participate in the Gopher Victory Walk throughout the season, by lining the entire path from the bus to the stadium and cheering for the players as
they arrive on game day.
• The design of TCF Bank Stadium allows for expansion to 80,000.
• There are approximately 25,000 seats with permanent chairbacks. All
seats between the goal lines have permanent chairbacks.
• TCF Bank Stadium includes 1,000 handicap accessible and
companion seats.
• There are 37 premium suites, 57 loge boxes, 259 seats in the indoor
club and 1,250 seats in the outdoor club at TCF Bank Stadium.
• There are 113 restrooms in TCF Bank Stadium, which include 625
toilets and 268 urinals.
• TCF Bank Stadium has 10 network TV camera positions and seating
for 165 members of the media.
• Populous (formerly HOK Sport) served as the primary architect for the
building, while Mortensen Construction was the general contractor.
• In excess of 8,800 tons of structural steel was used in the project,
with 97 percent recycled steel.
• TCF Bank Stadium contains 24,000 yards of cast-in-place concrete,
which is enough concrete to pour a four-inch thick, five-foot wide
sidewalk from Minneapolis to Rochester, Minn. (74 miles).
• The masonry includes 525,000 units of concrete block and 760,000
units of full and thin brick.
• There is 72,753 SF or approximately 1.7 acres of glass in TCF Bank
Stadium, enough to cover more than 1.25 football fields.
• There are 9,185 Minnesota Block “M”s in TCF Bank Stadium.
• The foundation of TCF Bank Stadium is supported by 2,133 drilled
piles, which is equivalent to 15.5 miles of piles.
