HOW TO ORDER
We can accept orders by post, telephone, fax,
email and online through the website as well as
in person at our showroom. Payment may be
made by most credit and debit cards and by
cheque or direct credit transfer. Cheques should
be made payable to Cromartie Hobbycraft Ltd.
BUSINESS ACCOUNTS
We can open Cromartie Business account on
application for customers ordering on a monthly
basis. Credit accounts are negotiable when
history of business has been established
otherwise we require payment in full before
goods are despatched. We will invoice
educational establishments, hospitals,
government institutions etc on a thirty day credit
account on production of an official order.

We reserve the right to make alterations to both
specifications and prices should the need arise.
CARRIAGE CHARGES
Cost of carriage is determined by the size and
weight of the goods and the destination; please
ask for a quote.

BEFORE ORDERING
Check the kiln will fit through
doors and up stairs and that
you have sufficient power to
run the kiln. If there’s a
problem, please call, we
may have a solution.
DELIVERY
Prices quoted in our kiln
brochure
are
for
kilns
delivered to ground level at your door in readily
accessible areas of mainland UK. The kiln will
arrive packed on a wooden pallet, you will need
some assistance with unpacking.
DIFFICULT ACCESS
If access is difficult please call us and we will
discuss all the options. If it is necessary to
dismantle a kiln contact us first to ensure that it
is done safely and within terms of the warranty.
DAMAGE ON DELIVERY
Please check the kiln immediately on delivery, if
not inspected, sign unexamined. If damaged
telephone Cromartie immediately, failure to do
so may invalidate any claims.
AFTER SALES AND TRAINING
If you have any concerns about the operation of
the kiln call our technical department. We also
offer chargeable training at your premises
covering the safe operation and maintenance of
the kiln, programming your controller and advice
on firing cycles, please ask for details.
SPARES
We can supply elements and many spare parts
for Cromartie kilns. When ordering please give
as much information as possible including kiln
model, kW loading and serial number as shown
on the data plate on the kiln.
MAXIMUM FIRING TEMPERATURE
Please note that kilns are not just rated for
temperature but also for heatwork, that is
temperature and time together; hence we quote
cone numbers as well as temperature.
Prolonged soak at high temperature may
increase heatwork beyond the specification and
could invalidate the warranty. If you have any
questions about high temperature firings please
call our technical department.

not 100% compatible with Gare and Duncan glazes, this can sometimes lead to crazing. To minimise the risk of

Making hand (or foot) prints in clay is great fun and easy to do.
With our special Handprint clay the process is straightforward
and the results great, give it a try in your studio and watch the
excitement grow. Before using, clay should be kneaded to
ensure that the moisture content is even and to expel any air

TILE CRANKS
Tile Cranks are used to support tiles in the kiln. The uprights
(legs) slot into a base/cover at either end producing a frame
into which the tiles are placed. Use our refractory cement to

Refractory Cement
Designed for all refractory uses including kiln repairs. This
cement gives a permanent rigid construction to Tile Cranks.
Mix the powder with water to a firm consistency, it hardens on
firing. Fill the hole around the spigot when in place in the
Base/Cover, remove excess with a knife, (not a wet cloth) and
ensure assembly is held square for 24 hours while setting.

CH2009A Batt Wash
Batt wash protects the surface of your kiln shelves, mix with
water to make a liquid the consistency of single cream and
paint it onto the top surface of the kiln shelves only. Repaint
when the batt wash wears away every year or so.

ORTON CONES & MINIBARS
Cones measure the combined effect of temperature and time,
(heatwork). They are sometimes referred to as witness cones.
Minibars are used exclusively in KilnSitter kiln controllers
where the bending action shuts off the kiln. Each cone or
minibar is given a temperature value, e.g. cone 04 is 1070°C,
this will vary depending on the rate of temperature rise. We
show two values, 150°C per hour and 60°C per hour, which
are relevant for the last 1½ or 2 hours of firing.

To make a more accurate assessment of your kiln’s
performance use three cones as illustrated below. The target
cone is 06 in the middle and is down perfectly; the guide cone,
number 07 is the one on the right, it is one cone cooler and is
over fired; the guard cone number 05½, is the one on the left, it
is one cone hotter and is underfired

Pins
Pins are triangular section, (toblerone shaped) and are used to support ware with turned or raised
foot rings that are left unglazed. The ware rests on three or more pins lying flat on the kiln shelf.
They are particularly advised for firing large plates and platters as the piece is kept away from
contact with the kiln shelf which could otherwise cause temperature differences between the base
and rim.
Pins are also used in Tee Cranks where they lie in grooves in the legs of the crank.

Tee Crank
Tee cranks enable plates to be stacked in the kiln saving space.. To prevent the foot of the plates
sticking to the crank, pins (see above) can be placed in slots. For deeper plates you may need to
use the distance spacers which adds height to the crank legs.
