Below is a list of useful resources for the classroom teacher. Some of them may be available in your
school or public library, or you may be able to consult a copy owned by a colleague. Some classic
books that are out of print are listed nonetheless; you may be able locate a used copy. The
recommended resources are provided in the following categories:
• Demonstration books. How-to books for illustrating concepts.
• Content resources. College or university –level textbooks for General, Organic, Physical,
Inorganic, and Biochemistry. Only a few recent books in each category are provided. There are
many others that can be used as reliable resources.
• Reference books that provide facts about elements, compounds, and formulas.
• Pedagogy books provide guidance for making your teaching most effective.
• Resources on safety and chemical waste disposal
• Resources for digital data collection
• History books can help enliven lessons by reference to the circumstances and personalities that
led to discovery of the concepts you are teaching.
• Periodicals that will help keep your lessons current.
• Sources of electronic media for teaching chemistry.

I. Books on Demonstrations
The user is warned that many of the older sources of directions for demonstrations require materials
with associated hazards or require disposal complications that would not be acceptable in today's
school environment. Teachers should thoroughly understand the principles being illustrated, practice
before student observers are present, and plan for the responsible disposal of waste.
