Shanks also serves as Executive Producer of all FOX Sports productions and is responsible for the look, sound, editorial content and superior quality of FOX Sports’ studio and game broadcasts. Named to the position in June 2010 at age 38, he is believed to be the youngest president of a broadcast network sports division ever. Shanks is the third president of FOX Sports since its inception in December 1993, succeeding David Hill and Ed Goren. Initially joining FOX Sports in 1994 as a broadcast associate, Shanks’ appointment is the very definition of the American corporate success story. A six-time Emmy Award-winner and a member of the Sports Business Journal’s prestigious “40 Under 40” Hall of Fame, Shanks assumes the day-to-day responsibilities of the FOX Sports broadcast network. In addition, Shanks spearheads the division’s strategy of pursuing major event programming to ensure FOX Sports’ position as a premier network sports broadcaster. Shanks served as executive vice president for entertainment for DIRECTV from 2004-2010, overseeing business activities related to the development of DIRECTV’s original entertainment, advanced products and advertising sales. In addition, he also was responsible for the DIRECTV Sports Networks business unit comprised of regional sports networks in Seattle, Denver and Pittsburgh. In that role, Shanks developed innovative content and services that were compelling and distinct. His advances include the launch of DIRECTV on DEMAND; The 101 Network, which among other programs, features the Dan Patrick Show; DIRECTV’s exclusive NASCAR package; the creation of the NFL RedZone feature to DIRECTV’s exclusive NFL SUNDAY TICKET package and its recently announced 3D programming initiative; and created the partnership between DIRECTV and Augusta National for the multiscreen coverage of The Masters. Shanks helped develop the FOXTrax “glowing puck” and yellow first-down line that is a staple of today’s televised football coverage. He began his sports television career as a broadcast associate at CBS Sports in 1993. Born Sept. 30, 1971, in Brazil, IN, Shanks lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Brenda, daughter Maisie, and sons, Jack and David. Sports Leadership Award MIKE SLIVE Former Commissioner, Southeastern Conference As the seventh commissioner of the Southeastern Conference, Mike Slive oversaw perhaps the greatest era of success since the league was founded in 1933 while helping shape the landscape of college sports as a national leader in intercollegiate athletics. Slive served as commissioner of the SEC from 2002 until his retirement in 2015. Named to the post on July 2, 2002, the SEC enjoyed unprecedented championship success under Slive’s leadership. He led the adoption of a new and effective league-wide NCAA compliance initiative, engineered landmark television contracts including the launch of a conference network, and guided the conference through expansion, welcoming two new institutions. The hallmark of this golden age of the SEC remains a remarkable seven consecutive Bowl Championship Series national titles in football. In all, the SEC won 81 national championships in 17 of its 21 sponsored sports during Slive’s tenure as SEC Commissioner. His impact was felt far beyond the footprint of the SEC. The founding commissioner of two conferences, he was also the founder of a law firm which assisted NCAA institutions in compliance matters, a Director of Athletics and a member of numerous leadership committees during the course of his career. Slive also helped craft the new College Football Playoff and was a leader in the historic effort to reorganize the NCAA for the purpose of creating a governance structure that provides maximum opportunities for student-athletes. With the SEC in the fifth year of landmark broadcast agreements with CBS and ESPN, the league launched the SEC Network in August 2014, a national network bringing more than 1000 events into the homes and to the mobile devices of college sports fans across the country. These agreements made the league the most widely distributed conference on television in the nation and also secured the financial health of the SEC and its member institutions for years to come. During Slive’s tenure at the SEC, he developed initiatives designed to maintain and improve the SEC’s preeminent position in intercollegiate athletics, both on and off the fields of play. These include: • The SEC Task Force on Compliance and Enforcement which developed policies and procedures to assist league schools in NCAA and SEC matters. The task force issued its first report at the 2004 SEC Spring Meetings. • SEC University (SECU), the conference’s academic initiative. SECU was created in 2005 to increase academic cooperation across the league by linking the resources of the conference’s member institutions. • The SEC Minority Coaches Database, an annual compilation of names and biographical information of every minority head and assistant football coach on the Division I level which is distributed to every SEC school and every conference in Division I. • An SEC Sportsmanship initiative consisting of policies and procedures designed to foster sportsmanship and prevent inappropriate fan behavior. Slive served as coordinator of the Bowl Championship Series (2006-08) and served as chair of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee (2008-09). In 2002-03, Slive served on the Commission of Athletics Opportunity, established by the United States Secretary of Education to review the workings of Title IX. Slive served as chair of the first NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee and was chair of the National Letter of Intent Steering Committee. He served as president of the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) from 2001-03, was also on the NCAA Management Council from 1997-2004 and is the former chair of the Board of Directors of NCAA Football USA. Slive previously was the first commissioner of Conference USA from 1995-2002 and was the first commissioner of the Great Midwest Conference upon its founding in 1991. A native of Utica, N.Y., Slive graduated from Dartmouth College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1962. He earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia Law School in 1965 and an LLM from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1966. Slive and his wife of 47 years, Liz, have a daughter, Anna; son-in-law, Judd Harwood; and granddaughter, Abigail who is three years old. Marc is one of America’s premier figurative sculptors, well known for his bronze figures depicting athletes and dancers, and for his bronze portrait busts, medallions, and commemorative statues. Marc’s iconic works in bronze for the world of sports include the NBA MVP Trophy (The Maurice Podoloff Trophy), the WNBA MVP Trophy, the Dave Rimington Trophy (College Football Center of the Year) and the NCAA Centennial Sculpture. In 2013 Marc created a new annual award for the NBA, the Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award. In 2014 his Tom Seaver sculpture, capturing the former March of Dimes Sports Luncheon Award recipient’ in the “drop and drive” pose, was unveiled on the Boomer and Carton show. Marc has also been busy honoring some of America’s most storied coaches, creating a bronze bust of three time NCAA Men’s Championship Coach Jim Calhoun for UConn, and a bronze bust of Hobie Billingsley, who coached five Olympic Medalists in diving while at Indiana University. Marc spends much of his time creating large-scale public sculptures. Working from life sittings in his New York studio he has sculpted busts of legendary recording artist Tony Bennett, Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel, and most recently iconic writer and journalist Tom Wolfe. The artist’s multiple works in the Smithsonian Institution’s collections include his portrait relief of Barack Obama for the Official 2009 Presidential Inaugural Medal, an over life-sized bust of President George H.W. Bush, and his 2011 bust of major Smithsonian donor Kenneth H. Behring, commissioned by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. The sculptor’s work is primarily done at his Redding, CT studio, where numerous works are in process. Marc is currently exhibiting a retrospective of his dance bronzes at the Walsh Art Gallery at Fairfield University, Fairfield CT. New York Division Board of Directors CHAIRMAN Joseph R.
