shape that doesn't share a single dimension or proportion with the original
Shelby Cobra."
Inside, the Shelby Cobra concept is
trimmed mostly in aluminum, with
electric blue splashed on the seat trim
and steering column. A full-width
aluminum instrument panel spans the cockpit in one unbroken swath. Key design details include a predominant grille opening, vertical bumper bars, the side air intake, a powerful bulge
over each wheel and stacked lamps in the front and rear. Because the engine sits rearward of the
front wheels, the concept's front overhang is short. An equally short rear overhang gives the
Shelby Cobra concept a short 100-inch wheelbase. These proportions instantly communicate
rear-wheel-drive power and serious performance. The stance of the car on the road is unmistakably powerful and sure-footed. More subtle design touches include no windshield wipers, no
side windows and no convertible top.

Presidents Report
President Dan Jones brought the ceremonies to order at 7:15 P.M. Dan asked that our
club Secretary Paul Blanchard along with Ann Clack count the ballots and prepare a
list of the winners to be announced later this evening. Dan introduced a special guest
for tonight, a Mr. Phil Henney who was a member of the Fillipinetti Racing Team in the
era of the 60’s.
Secretary’s Report
Those wishing fair-weather, fast driving on open roads need only apply.
"When you're setting out to tell a story about an automobile in a fresh, contemporary way,
you're not actually looking to create beauty – you're looking to create meaning," says J Mays,
Ford Motor Company group vice president, design. "We have interpreted that ass-kicking
Cobra attitude in a very modern way."
Paul Blanchard and Ann Clack counted the ballots and gave a list to Dan Jones for the
formal presentation of the new officers for 2004.
Included with the ballot was a survey for members to fill out listing their interests as to
what they would like to see in the New Year. They will be turned over to our Newsletter
editor for compilation.
The Shelby Cobra concept was built in just five months at a relatively low cost by a select
group of Ford enthusiasts in Dearborn, Mich. It's a fully developed and engineered racing
roadster that represents the best modern racing technology Ford has to offer today. When
parked next to the all-new Ford GT supercar and the redesigned 2005 Mustang coupe, the
Shelby Cobra concept completes a trilogy of legendary Ford performance vehicles and signals
what might be a next step for the blue oval.

Club Christmas Dinner. Bob wanted to mention that we have enough money to fund
some of our annual charities that we give to each year.

club members in the coming year, ones that can be added in the monthly newsletter.
Brent Soo Hoo discussed the Club inventory of T-shirts asked members for their input

A motion was made by Fred Gehring and seconded to donate $500.00 to the Oregon
Food Bank this year. In addition we have chosen to donate money to the Ronald
McDonald House through the purchase of stuffed Kitty Cats through the Multnomah
Hot Rod Council.
"We were planning to use the Ford GT suspension systems, and we asked ourselves how much
more of the Ford GT could we borrow," says Manfred Rumpel, manager, advanced product
development.

Quite a lot, they discovered.
Key design details include a predominant grille opening. The Shelby Cobra team worked
closely with John Coletti, head of engineering for Ford's Special Vehicle Team, to maximize
commonality with the Ford GT supercar. The bulk rear structure of the Shelby Cobra concept
is made from slightly modified Ford GT components, including the massive cast-aluminum
suspension nodes, the rear rails and bumper beam, a major cross member and the brackets used
to mount the transmission to the car. The center portion of the space frame also has a high level
of commonality with the Ford GT, as its major aluminum extrusions are based heavily on
existing pieces.
Even though it shares many parts with the Ford GT, the Shelby Cobra concept is more than two
feet shorter with a wheelbase that is nearly seven inches shorter. Comparatively small proportions like this gave designers the chance to create a body that is tightly wrapped around its
engine and chassis.

"We let the powertrain, the space frame and the suspension dictate the architecture for the
body," says Richard Hutting, chief designer. "And the result was a very modern and desirable
"In many ways, it's not very exotic," says Graham Hoare, director for Ford research and advanced engineering. "It uses the same basic castings and assembly techniques as our production
modular engine family. The output, though, is phenomenal."
The Shelby Cobra concept's engine has 10 cylinders and is bored and stroked for a 6.4-liter
displacement. With a front-mounted engine and a rear-mounted transmission, the Shelby Cobra
concept has nearly perfect 50/50 weight distribution and a surprisingly roomy cockpit. Because
the transmission is rear-mounted, there is no large center tunnel between the seats. This allows
the driver and passenger to sit relatively close to one another, and there is as much front legroom
as in a Crown Victoria. Instruments include a 220-mph speedometer, a 10,000rpm tachometer and critical temperature
and pressure readouts.

I sincerely hope everyone had a good time at Heidi’s; the restaurant was beautifully decorated
inside and outdoors for the Holidays.
After dinner, Dan Jones gave awards, and presented the new officers and staff for 2004. He
then introduced a special quest speaker, Mr. Phil Henny who worked for Carroll Shelby during
the 60’s and still does. (He sees Carroll every month.) His presentation was very informative
and quite entertaining.

Congratulations to our door prize winners John & Doris Clarenbach, Larry Cockerham, Steve &

We had the usual “ no holds barred “ fun raffle followed up by Bob Parker’s excellent slide
program and witty commentary.
Ray and Ann Clack won the Bent LeMans Award for having two cars broken at the July Historic
Races.
I want to thank all of you who donated a childrens gift; 36 items were collected – games, books,
stuffed animals, puzzles, dolls, Legos, Batman toys, a fleece blanket, robots, and of course,
lots of die cast and model cars! These were given to M.O.M.S. ( Mothers of Military Support) at
the American Legion Post 122 in Canby, Oregon. The toys and gifts will go to service families
whose father or mother is serving over seas and are just too strapped to afford the extras at
Christmas. This organization collects year around for military families, and accepts cash

Rarest 1967 Shelbys (Part 2)

1967 GT 500 Shelby Mustang 427 Shelby “Super Snake” V.I.N. 67402F4A00544
1 of 1 - 26,304 miles. Special model built at Shelby American for Mel Burns Ford. Intended to
be the first of 50 but no other Super Snake was built due to the retail price was $7,500 and a
427 Cobra could be bought for roughly the same amount. Driven by Carroll Shelby and Fred
Goodell at Goodyear test track in Texas for tire promotion film production. Carroll recorded
lap speeds over 150 mph and top speed of 170 mph! The Snake has been carefully detailed and
would do great in any show but its uniqueness will always set it apart no matter were it goes.
Appeared on the Nashville Network “My Classic Car Video Magazine” 1/21/96. Listed in the
Shelby American World Registry-1997 and the subject of so many articles that Jeff Ford (editor
of Mustang Monthly) said “that the car has staple holes in its belly button”. Add one more hole
due to the extensive article and cover page in Mustang Monthly in August of 1997. It was the
subject of a three and a half page article in August of 1967 issue of Drag Strip Magazine. This
one of a kind Shelby was factory equipped with a unique blue narrow-wide-narrow Lemans
Stripes; powered by a lightweight 427 medium-riser engine with aluminum heads, tuned
“bundle of snakes GT40-style” headers, 780 CFM Holley 4V carb, aluminum intake, oil cooler,
remote filter, 4 speed trans backed up by a 4.11 Detroit locker rear end.

DETROIT – Huge engine, tiny car.
Those are the two founding principles of the Ford Shelby Cobra concept on display in
Detroit at the 2004 North American International Auto Show.
It's the foundation motor racing legend Carroll Shelby used when he built the legendary
Cobra with a 427-cubic-inch V-8 engine under the hood of a tiny British roadster in 1964.
And it’s the formula Ford is using today to build a powerful, fully developed, productionfeasible concept car.
Shorter than a Mazda Miata and weighing just more than 3,000 pounds, the Shelby Cobra
concept has a 605-horsepower, all-aluminum V-10 engine mounted at the front of an advanced Ford GT-based aluminum chassis.

There is no roof, no side glass and no radio.
"That's the formula," says Shelby. "It's a massive motor in a tiny, lightweight car."
Loosely based on the 4.6-liter, 32-valve V-8 used in the 2004 Mustang Mach I, the Ford
Shelby Cobra concept engine has 10 cylinders and is bored and stroked for a 6.4-liter
displacement.

The car was returned to Shelby American, in Los Angeles, and Goodell started looking for a
buyer. He turned to Don McCain, a former Shelby American Field Sales Representative (who
had also been responsible for the GT350 drag program). By 1967, McCain had left Shelby
American to become the High Performance Sales Manager for Mel Burns Ford, a Shelby dealer
in Long Beach, California with a reputation for performance car involvement. McCain envisioned having Shelby American build 50 Super Snakes which would be sold exclusively
through his dealership as a Shelby alternative to the 427-powered Camaros and Chevelles and
426 Mopars which were in a league above standard Shelbys. However, when he tallied up the
cost of everything--even using a slightly detuned and therefore less expensive 427 engine--the
bottom line was a cool $7,500. That sticker price was just too high. There was no question that
the Super Snake was a real stormer but when prospective buyers realized it was about the same
price as a 427 Cobra, they usually bought the Cobra. The Super Snake was eventually purchased by a pair of airline pilots who drag raced it on weekends.
While three 1967 GT500s received 427 engines by special order at Shelby American, only one
was a special model called the Super Snake. (From page 615 of 1997 Shelby American World

There are videos of Carroll driving this car on a track that you can see as well! This car recently sold for $200,000+ on Ebay. This ain’t no clone “Eleanor” GT500E, this car is well
worth the investment dollars. As we saw a non-original motored 427 1967 GT500 go at BarrettJackson this year, you have to wonder what those bidders are thinking. One like this is the real
deal; original and documented. And documentation is everything.

As I look ahead at the upcoming year I see a year filled with a wide variety of activities and
opportunities for all car enthusiasts to participate in. From the Portland Roadster Show to the
High Desert Swap Meet & Barbeque there should be plenty for all to enjoy. We are looking at a
possibility of 3 open track days which should give all who have a "need for speed" plenty of
track time. This club survives on the hard work and dedication of it's members so let's all work
together and make this a great year. Thanks for the opportunity to serve as your president in
2004.

As I sit here working on the events calendar for 2004 I get more and more excited looking forward to all the activities available to us in the coming months. If I'm able to make 25% of them
I'll be very happy. We already have 7-8 people for Kool April Nites and welcome any others.

FOR SALE: Wheels for sale: TWO sets of (4) 15 X 7 /4 lug wheels used on GT Mustangs and other cars 85
up to 93. Set 1 very nice, polished clean and straight with 4 polished caps: $200. Set 2 is used, scratches, all 4

One set of 16 X 7 / 4.5 x 5 lugs. Mustang GT wheels, 94 up also used on Sport Package V6 Mustangs, came off
our 98 V6 Mustang at 13,000 miles. Straight nice five spoke wheel. Painted. $400
One set of tires: 225/50 16 VR Michelin Pilots. One tire never used the other three have one trip of 800 miles.

FOR SALE: SAAC license plates. I (Fred Gehring) purchased one of these at SAAC 5 in Dearborn, Michigan
twenty three years ago. The guy that had them manufactured has moved to Vancouver, Washington and still has
a pile of them left. Dan Jones bought two from him at our last Open Track day. They're really cool. Both '66'
GT-350s sport one at our place now. I was told at the DMV 'ordeal' last Saturday we only need to display one
license plate under the 'SP' (one time registration) deal. The cops will not write you up for not displaying a set
front and back. Good news for those who wish to display this club logo plate. It's 12" x 6" standard plate size
with mounting holes in the same locations. The classic Cobra round logo in red and blue, text in blue (“Shelby
American Automobile Club”) with plate background in white. His asking price is $5.00 each. Here's how you

SAAC Northwest
SAAC Northwest (Shelby American Automobile Club Northwest Region) is a regional club
formed in 1978 for the purpose of preserving and enjoying Shelby and other Ford and Mercury
performance cars.
Club meetings are scheduled for the 3rd Sunday of each month, 6 p.m. Denny’s Restaurant
of Wilsonville, OR. From I-5 take Exit 283 Turn east; turn right on SW Parkway. Guests and
visitors are always welcome!
Dues are $20 per year (pro-rated quarterly for new members joining throughout the year).
