It also means back to business for the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce’s Business Education Partnership Committee. By creating and supporting partnerships between local businesses and schools, BEP helps enhance the quality of education throughout the Lowcountry. Ann Piercy’s class at Hilton Head Island Elementary School were happy to receive Project Connect donations of classroom games. Students aren’t the only ones prepping for another successful school year. The chamber heads back to school as well as we kick off Project Connect, helping connect teachers in need of classroom supplies with local businesses that want to support education in a tangible way. Teachers spend hundreds of dollars each year of their “As educators, we appreciate our chamber’s involvement because they provide a vital link to the community. The support of the business community partnership with education is more vital than ever and the chamber consistently keeps this need in the forefront.” - Todd Bornscheuer, Principal McCracken Middle School own funds for classroom supplies. Project Connect is a community-wide program that helps lessen that burden. By connecting community businesses and individuals with teacher’s wish lists for classroom supplies, the program gives everyone an opportunity to support education. Teacher lists are published weekly in the Island Packet, along with “wishes granted.” Students and teachers benefit every day thanks to the generosity of Project Connect contributors. Since its inception over $35,000 has been used to purchase needed school supplies, from dictionaries to art supplies, digital media and more. “Project Connect has a real impact in our schools. One reader saw that McCracken students were on a wish list for study session snacks,” said Hannah Horne, director of public policy and small business. “She dropped off her donation at the chamber the next morning.” From individual donors to member businesses such as Hilton Head Hospital that donated sanitary wipes and a school informational visit from one of their nurses to Hargray Communications, which filled backpacks with school supplies for Hilton Head Middle School, the Lowcountry business community is making a real difference and so can you. 4 August 2015 | CHAMBER BUSINESS MONTHLY | hiltonheadisland.org Bluffton Elementary School welcomed Project Connect’s donation of snacks and classroom supplies for its tutoring program and Young Men of Bluffton boy’s leadership group. BEP’s popular Golden Apple program offers area teachers and staff access to perks generously donated by member businesses. Help our local teachers by offering a GAP discount at your business. Over 70 chamber businesses participated last year, allowing teachers to use benefit cards for services from dining to automotive, retail and more. Submit your GAP offer at HiltonHeadBlufftonChamber.org. Why we participate in Project Connect: “At Hilton Head Hospital, we are committed to serving our community. Our mission is to help improve the quality of life and the overall well-being of the people we serve. As a local business, investing in education is important because when we invest in education, we invest in our future.” - Diana Magnan, Director of Education, Hilton Head Hospital REALITY STORE School is where we prepare our students for life’s opportunities. One of our most successful programs, the Reality Store does just that. Last year, over 600 local students participated in the chamber’s financial literacy program hosted in partnership with Hilton Head High School and member businesses. Students are given a pseudo “career” bank balance and challenged to pay for all expenses with one month’s income based on their grade point average. From paying a mortgage to making car payments, the students visit designated stations, facing the “reality” of what it’s like to pay taxes and buy groceries for their assigned Reality Store “family.” It gives local high schoolers a dose of reality on how education is tied to their success later in life. Participating chamber Hilton Head Island High School students participate in last year’s Reality Store program. businesses include banking, insurance, housing, utilities, grocery, automotive and other industries. GROUNDHOG DAY The chamber’s “Groundhog Day” job shadow program offers local students a chance to experience their dream jobs for a day, with professions ranging from banking and automotive to hospitality. Recognizing the fact that today’s students are tomorrow’s workforce, the BEP program is a joint-initiative with area businesses that’s really taken off. Sign your business up to take part. Your chamber is a great place to get connected to education in the Lowcountry. Celebrating 40 Years: Hilton Head Hospital Q&A: President & CEO Jeremy Clark Hilton Head Hospital is celebrating 40 years on Hilton Head Island. The hospital is thriving and in great hands with new Market President and CEO Jeremy Clark at the helm of a facility that has grown in our community in more ways than one. What began as a 40-bed facility has grown in size and stature to encompass not only its main campus, but a Bluffton/Okatie facility and Coastal Carolina Hospital. Looking forward, Clark shares his views on the expanding role of healthcare in the Lowcountry. CBM: How has Hilton Head Regional Healthcare developed to meet the demands of our growing community? CLARK: As we proudly celebrate the 40th anniversary of Hilton Head Hospital, we can’t think of any other words that better define our mission than quality and commitment. We have an outstanding medical staff that’s incredibly well trained and has excellent clinical outcomes. They’re also very committed to our community and our hospital. We continue to expand services to meet the communities’ need. It’s been more than a year since we opened the Bluffton Medical Campus and we are receiving overwhelming positive response from our patients about the center and the outpatient services. Coastal Carolina Hospital continues to grow, allowing us to invest in new technology such as robotic surgery and state of the art imaging. We are also reaching out into Beaufort with needed primary and specialty care. CBM: Recently coming from the Memphis and Dallas markets, what key factors that proved effective there that may be beneficial in our area? CLARK: Like any area, it’s important to learn about the community and its needs, and build relationships with the physicians and the staff. It’s the staff and the physicians that really should get all the credit for the positive things that happen at our hospitals. CBM: As you look forward, how do you see the healthcare industry’s positive impact strengthening the Lowcountry community? CLARK: For us, it’s an exciting time to be involved in healthcare here in the Lowcountry. We take pride in helping so many citizens who not that long ago had to travel elsewhere for certain healthcare services. For example, take a look at what we’re doing in cardiology — we have some great physicians, state-of-the-art technology and an excellent cardiac surgery program and a certified stroke program at Coastal. It’s really impressive. We also do a lot of advanced orthopedic and spine surgery. We have great physicians and one of the best programs in the country. We will continue to move forward and exceed the levels of quality and safety standards that are established by many national organizations. We’re very proud that we’re able to deliver this quality care in the community. hiltonheadisland.org | CHAMBER BUSINESS MONTHLY | August 2015 11 Who’s Who and Who’s Where To submit information, please email Anne Feldman at [email protected] Joseph George Pam Flasch Michael Danyov New Position: Promoted to lieutenant, patrol division at Bluffton Police Department Old Position: Sergeant, patrol division at Bluffton Police Department New Position: Communications manager at Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer Authority Old Position: Director of communications & tourism marketing at Luray-Page Chamber, Luray, VA New Position: Promoted to Sergeant, emergency management / training division at Bluffton Police Department Old Position: Detective, investigations division at Bluffton Police Department Barrett Gilham Ariel Brewer New Position: Account manager at group46 Old Position: Director of athletic media relations at Georgia Southern University, Statesboro, GA New Position: Massage therapist at Le Spa of Sea Pines Old Position: Massage therapist at Lava 24 Fitness Brenda Dooley New Position: Assistant executive director at Hilton Head Regional Habitat for Humanity Old Position: Executive director at LowCountry Habitat for Humanity, Beaufort, SC Amy Brinson Kathleen Foley New Position: Promoted to general manager at FACES DaySpa Old Position: Lash stylist and team leader at FACES Lash Studio and currently licensed esthetician at FACES DaySpa New Position: Sales coordinator at The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa Old Position: Research assistant at USCB Lowcountry and Resort Island Tourism institute Joe Pepitone New Position: Director of sales at Covenant Security Surveillance Old Position: Wholesale sales manager at Sea Eagle Josh Goodpaster New Position: Spa manager at FACES DaySpa Old Position: Lead massage therapist and currently licensed massage therapist at FACES DaySpa Lauren Heldreth New Position: Group sales manager at The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa Old Position: Director of sales & marketing at Holiday Inn & Suites Lauren Taylor New Position: Sales coordinator at The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa Old Position: Operations supervisor at White Lodging Services, Greater Chicago, IL Cindy Owens New Position: General manager at Regus Old Position: Director of sales at Comfort Suites Bluffton Taylor Jacobs New Position: Director of marketing at LAVA 24 Fitness Old Position: Personal trainer at Advance Wellness, Quincy, IL Brad Wells New Position: Philanthropy specialist at United Way of the Lowcountry Old Position: Portfolio manager at Property Management Pros Luke Paulick New Position: Bluffton realtor specialist at Collins Group Realty Old Position: Sales associate at Pulte Homes Lori Padgett New Position: Administrative operations manager at Pino Gelato Old Position: Quality assurance specialist at Micro Measurements Laboratories, Chicago, IL Lindsay Blackmon New Position: Catering & Social Sales Coordinator at The Beach House Old Position: Banquet manager at The Beach House Jenna Linder New Position: Assistant Manager at Le Spa of Sea Pines Old Position: Banquet Manager at Richmond Hill Senior Center, Richmond Hill, GA THANK YOU: WE COULDN’T HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT YOU...
