WEST COAST AREA
ANNUAL REPORT
2012
Commissioner’s Message
We must be doing something right! Thanks to our Guiders, who provide an interesng and engaging
program for the girls, our membership is up over 10%. Keep up the good work.
Some things change….
Belinda was a terrific Area Commissioner unl her career took her to Malawi in the summer. For the
la(er part of the year, the West Coast Area Commissioner role was vacant. Thank you to everyone
who stepped up to handle porons of the role so we could connue to funcon.
Welcome to Caroline, our Administrave Assistant, who handles most of the day to day email, gives
us our weekly Whisper and helps in so many ways! Thanks also to those DCs and Advisers who
completed their terms in 2012 and welcome to our new members on Council.
The Hillcrest District was split and amalgamated with Southridge and Mackenzie Heights. We had a
few units close and new ones open. West Coast Area now has two TREX units.
Good things get beer….
In 2012 Holidaze went Undercover. We had 225 girls and adults agree it was the best year ever. In
addion to the usual cra5s, archery, karaoke and swim sessions there were special acvies including
a session with the RCMP, a scavenger hunt and pool swim in Sechelt, a carnival with a ‘whodonit’
mystery to solve and a life size Clue Game where the patrols had to solve a daily mystery by finding
clues all around camp.
West Coast Area’s Iron Chef Compeon was in late October with a Halloween theme. Girls in groups
of 4-6 were asked to prepare a three course meal on camp cooking equipment using the secret
ingredients provided. One of the guest judges, Mijune Pak (of FollowMeFoodie blogging fame!)
posted about the event, and included plenty of pictures. What great PR!
This year, West Coast Area chose to host an Area event for Brownies & Guides. The Science World
Sleepover was so popular we had to host a second one.
Once again our Camping and Training commi(ees were acve and their efforts are very much
appreciated. They hosted or helped with Safe Guide, OAL, QM, Training Day, Iron Chef, canoeing,
kayaking, Mardi Gras, Rainbucket,, Amazing Arts and More Seaside Fun – just to name a few.
Our strong foundaon connues….
Our Districts and Units were busy with camps, sleepovers and day events. Some of the themes and
locaons included Galaxy Adventure, Save our Planet, Animal Ancs, Hands Across the Border, Night
of the Mummy, Farm, Ice cream for Breakfast, Britannia Mines, Eco excursion, Great Salmon Send-off,
Burnaby Village Museum, Surf camp, tree planng and many more.
Community events and community service connue to be a big part of Guiding. Many of our members parcipated in Remembrance Day ceremonies, Community events and supported a variety of
projects to benefit those less fortunate.
The 9th Vancouver Brownies spent an evening at the Vancouver Aquarium as extras for a filming of
The Cupcake Girls TV show.
2012 saw the 1st New Westminster Rangers visit Pax Lodge and Europe, the 2nd Burnaby Pathfinders
and Rangers travel to Our Cabana in Mexico, the 6th Vancouver Pathfinders a(end the NW Centennial
Girl Scout Roundup in Oregon and the River’s Edge Rangers go to Europe.
Many of our members were selected for Provincial, Naonal or WAGGGS sponsored events. Belinda
Li a(ended the WAGGGS Leadership Development Project, Nadia Lee was selected for the 12 week
Community Volunteer programme in Sangham, India and Chelsea Koepke volunteered for a 12 week
Community Programme at the World Centre at Sangham in Pune, India.
Jacquie Roy went to the Costa Rica Adventure, Imogen Gay represented Girl Guides of Canada at
Change the World – Internaonal Camporee in Conneccut, USA, Kayla Seto and Kate Hall a(ended
Colours of the World, Laura Do(o and Tamara Connor a(ended the Alberta Girls Parliament and
Siena Wood-Hu(on a(ended the Scots Odyssey.
2013 is shaping up to be another great year.

CAMP OLAVE MANAGEMENT COMMITTTEE
Joanne Stregger, COMC Chair
We had another successful year at Camp Olave, with many, many girls and women enjoying all we have to offer! A second Amazing Arts Camp
saw 89 girls and 31 staff parcipang in all sorts of arsc endeavours, including zumba sessions, jewelry making, ribbon dancing, yarn arts,
storytelling, theatre, culinary arts, drawing & painng, percussion, cartooning, Maori scks, games, cra5s, and of course, the harmonica lessons
- every girl went home with a harmonica & the ability to play it! They also enjoyed the usual camp acvies - archery, swimming and campfires.
At our annual "More Seaside Fun" camp, 100 girls from around the province plus staff parcipated in a varied program that included photography, Lost in the Woods, knoOng, big gadgets (ra5s & catapults), geo-caching, an amazing race, movie night, talent night, Karaoke night,
cra5s, swimming and archery. The 13-14 year old girls had the opportunity to go out in Voyageur canoes, provided by the local paddle club,
and were accompanied by Fred Stark who sang Indian chants. Their picture appeared in the Coast Reporter, the Williams Lake News and the
Prince George paper.
We held the annual joint meeng of the COMC and the Site Managers at camp in January. Our guest speaker, Ed Hill, one of the original organizers of the Vision Quest Journey, spoke of opportunies available for our campers - voyageur canoeing and Nave culture, which as you have
already read, we were able to take advantage of at camp.
Camp Olave turned 85 this year, and we celebrated with a big party at camp in May, a(ended by over 80 people from the community as well as
many Guiding members and their families. A me capsule was buried near the flag poles to commemorate Guiding's 100th Anniversary. It is to
be opened in 2037.
Three new stoves were purchased for Brock, Ranger and Hideaway, and plans are underway to renovate the kitchen in Gingerbread, winterize
Tipi Waken and to replace Rose Co(age with a storage shed. We have a new roof on Nawilak and the boat house. As the year drew to a close,
we had to close Nawilak due to plumbing issues, but have every assurance that it will be back to renng condion before the spring camping
season begins.
COMC received tax exempon for 2013/14 from the Sechelt municipal council; many thanks to them for connuing to support our camp.
We have moved towards making Camp Olave self sustaining in the 2013 camping season. To that end, we have raised the per night fees and no
longer receive the assessment per girl from the areas. We are always grateful for donaons - we have a wish list prepared by the site managers
if you would like to help the camp.
This year we said goodbye to several members of the commi(ee who have finished their terms, Ann Barbour, Angela Sles-Bodkin, Bev Sloan,
Elaine Lake, Pauline Quick and Tracy Clark. Sydney Ma(u and Belinda Li resigned due to scheduling conflicts; Belinda moved to Africa! Diane
Alsop, CA, now semi-rered, no longer does our year end review. Thank you all for your commitment to our campsite.
New to the COMC this year - Kim Schweighardt - booking agent, Cynthia Clarke - crest co-ordinator, Lisa de Lange - secretary, Mary Gates - WCA
rep, and myself - Joanne Stregger as chair.
As usual, we have held two work pares; many thanks to all the volunteers and their families and friends who work so hard to keep our
campsites in such excellent shape.
Thank you to Girl Guides of Canada - BC Council for connuing to support Camp Olave with capital grants; it would be much harder to make
ends meet without them!
The Camp Olave Management Commi(ee wishes to sincerely thank the following Guiding Areas, Districts, Units and individuals for their
generous donaons to Camp Olave in 2012.

Hollyburn Chalet
Joanne Stregger, Hollyburn Chalet Chair
We had a very good winter with lots of campers and lots of snow.
There were 22 weekend camps, plus we had another very successful
Guider Getaway in January with lots of hints and ps for Guiders new
and returning to the mountain. Thanks to all the Guiders who a(end
every year to make sure the new Guiders are well prepared for this
unique camp experience.
We rent Snowshoes and backpacks to assist units. Thank you to our
Booking agent, Renata Triveri for managing the rentals and the
equipment. We purchased more snowshoes for adult Guiders this
season. The snowshoes were well used this year and our new crest has
been well received.
Campers connue to be very pleased with the well supplied and welltended cabin; thanks to Shelley & Jim Reid for being an integral part of
maintaining what is the proudest and best loved chalet on Hollyburn
Woodwards Landing
Gail Rawle, Woodwards Landing Chair
Woodwards Landing connues to be booked throughout the year. We have a group that likes to
winter camp, even though the water is turned off in the campsite. Of course the washrooms are
available during this me. The campsite is a popular place for local groups as it is near enough to
shopping, but far enough away to enjoy hiking along the dyke. Many outside groups enjoy this
site as well, Scoung and other community groups. There caretaker has been on this site for
many years and takes care of it and our Guiding groups very well.
Guide House
Gail Rawle, Guide House Chair
Our Guide House has been booked year round for sleep-overs for one night and and other mes for full weekends. We have entertained
Internaonal groups this past year for somemes two visits on their way to other desnaons in the Province. The House has regular District and
Trefoil meengs booked each month. The back yard is available for tenng for those who wish to have the inside facilies for cooking and showering. It has been self sufficient again this past year. We are always upgrading and painng to keep it in good repair.
