2016 Runner`s Guide - Baytown Bud Heat Wave 5 Mile Run
2016
Runner’s
Guide
Welcome
On behalf of our host venue,
M.L. Wismer Distributing, the City
of Baytown, the Baytown Tourism
Office, our sponsors, volunteers –
coordinated by The Bridge Over
Troubled Waters, Inc. -- and race
beneficiary, the Baytown Special
Rodeo Association, welcome to the
27th annual Baytown Bud Heat Wave.
We’re excited that you’re coming
to Baytown from at least six states
outside of Texas, over 60 Texas cities
or towns and as a member of more
than 40 different running or triathlon
clubs and training groups to take
part in an event that’s part of the
City’s Independence Day celebration.
Running
Alliance
Sport
is
indebted to Jim Ferris of M.L. Wismer
Distributing and On The Run coowner Jay Lee for working with us to
bring this iconic Texas road race back
five years ago after a long absence.
The greater Houston area is
blessed with great events and event
producers, but we’re glad that you’ve
chosen to spend a part of your
Fourth of July with us – and help us
support the Baytown Special Rodeo
Association as they create a special
day each September for a group of
special needs children in our local
communities.
We want you to run hard and well
– with a smile, of course, but we’ll be
waiting at the finish with beverages
from M.L. Wismer Distributing, cold
watermelon, sausage on a stick
prepared by White Water Cowboy
BBQ Company – courtesy of Ditta
Meat, a free post-race massage from
Premier Sports Chiropractic, a cold
towel and another snazzy, functional
medal -- just like last year’s!
Running Alliance Sport and M.L.
Wismer Distributing hopes that you’ll
use your very functional medal to
pop open a nice cold Budweiser
sometime in your future.
We’ll celebrate your finish with
professional finish line recognition
and photographs by RaceShots.Net
before moving to the Distributorship
for our awards ceremony, which
kicks-off with our annual Patriotic
Costume Contest, presented by RAS
and The Bridge.
Back for a second year is the On
The Run Six Pack Abs Contest and it’s
all punctuated with our third annual
Sausage Eating Contest -- presented
by M.L. Wismer, White Water Cowboy
BBQ Company and Ditta Meat -where two-time defending champion
Gordon Christie of Katy will take on
eight challengers, including four who
will come from the four running clubs
or training groups that registered the
most participants.
Thank you again for joining us. And
thanks for making us Texas’ largest
Independence Day-themed race at a
single distance last year.
Don’t forget to like all of our races
on Facebook, follow us on Twitter @
BudHeatwave or rate us on BibRave.
com, but most importantly, tell a
friend about your experience with us
here today.
We hope to see you this fall for one
or more of the three races that make
up the sixth annual Texas Bridge
Series and next March’s 14th annual
Seabrook Lucky Trail Marathon, Half
Marathon, Quarter Marathon, 5Ks
and Relays.

A familiar voice to many of our Running Alliance Sport and Baytown Bud Heat Wave runners
will be singing our National Anthem today, 21-year-old Waverly Walk from Spring.
And for the second straight year, “Waves” will be running with you to the finish line.
You’ve heard the Liberty University senior and elementary education major in year’s past at
our Toughest 10K Kemah and the Seabrook Lucky Trail Marathon as well as many other races
throughout the greater Houston area.
AID STATIONS
One thing’s for sure about Texas on the Fourth of July, it will be either hot, humid or likely both! That’s why we’ve got great
folks helping us out in each mile along the course.
Mile 1/3 - Tee Time For Austin (led by Brian Ellis) and
Bay Area Running Club - Captain: David Stockton
Mile 2 - Bay Area Fit - Captain: Diana Bartula
Mile 4 - Baytown Special Rodeo Association (led by J.R. Miller)
Handing out cold, wet towels between the mile three and mile four markers will be Jana Landry and Carrie Godfrey, race
directors of this December’s Run Girl 13.1 Women’s Only Half Marathon, 2-Person Relay and 5K.
We’d like to welcome to a Running Alliance Sport event for the very first time, Ainsley’s Angels.
Led at today’s event by Tracey Finch and directed by Southeast Texas ambassador Paula Haas, Ainsley’s Angels of America is
an organization that provides the opportunity for those otherwise unable to participate in events such as 5Ks, 10Ks and such
by being their legs and they are our heart and inspiration.
Aiming to build awareness about America’s special needs community through inclusion in all aspects of life and armed with
the belief that everyone deserves to be included, Ainsley’s Angels serves as advocates by providing education and participating
as active members in local communities, including endurance events.
Ainsley’s mission is to promote inclusion, spread awareness, and give the gift of mobility and is run completely on donations
and everyone involved is a volunteer.

The Race
Contingency plans for bad weather
Rain- The event will NOT be cancelled due to rain alone unless the downpour is such that athletes, police, and volunteers lose visibility making situations unsafe. If this occurs we will wait until the rain subsides and follow
the same procedure listed for lightning conditions (minus the 30 minute
rule). Athletes will be informed of such a change via announcements on
race morning.
Lightning - In the event of lightning the race will be postponed by 30 minutes every time lightning is spotted and thunder is heard within 6 miles
of the event. Please note that every time lightning strikes and thunder is
heard within 6 miles of the race site we must delay the start by 30 minutes.
Tornado Warning - If at anytime before (race morning close to start time)
or during the event, a tornado warning is issued, the race will be cancelled.
On Course Cancellation - If the race is canceled due to storms (lightning
and/or excessive rain) or tornado warnings while it is in progress we will
do everything in our power to alert everyone on the course. All police,
SAG, and medical personnel will be made aware and do all they can to
warn and SAG in all participants. We will also do everything in our power
to assist those that are still on course. Those that are on course without
means of rescue should seek immediate shelter via open stores, buildings,
garages, homes and/or any other means of protection from the dangerous
conditions. If it gets bad and we are not there to help you off the course
please do everything you can to keep yourself safe and take shelter.
Because of agreements with the Texas Department of Transportation and
various municipalities regarding a fixed amount of time to have roads
closed or in use or the time of public safety or law enforcement officials,
Running Alliance Sport, at any time, reserves the right to shorten the distance of any of its races to comply, especially in dealing with inclement
weather conditions that may make any course unavailable or unsuitable
for runner participation.
Disclaimer
Do not run this race if you are unprepared.
The combined heat and humidity on the 4th
of July in Baytown makes the Baytown Bud
Heat Wave a very strenuous and taxing race.
Entrants should only seek participation in
this event if they are well conditioned and
cautious in their race strategy.

The Race
Course
The Baytown Heat Wave is run mostly on flat, concrete /
asphalt-surfaced streets through the southwestern section
of Baytown. The course encompasses Bicentennial Park, the
City Hall Complex and residential areas
of this section.
Railroad Crossings
Runners, our course crosses railroad tracks twice during the
race. This year will be the first year that the railroads said that
they will not guarantee that trains will stop between 7:00 a.m.
and 8:30 a.m. They said if there is a train, it will move at a
slower speed and use more whistle, but they can make no
guarantees that there will be no trains. Please be alert at all
times when crossing the two railroad tracks on the Baytown
Bud Heat Wave course.
Course Markers
Visible mile markers will be positioned along the course.
Volunteer course monitors will be positioned to
provide help and directions along the course.
Water Stations
There will be aid stations approximately every mile along the
race course. These will offer water and/or sponges/towels,
and/or water hoses. Medical aid will be available at the finish
line and a sag wagon will monitor the race.
Sponges/Towels
Sponges or towels will be available before the water station
starting at mile two.
Photography
Official race photographer will be on the course and at the
finish.
Bibs
All participants must wear their bib on the front in a way so
that course officials can see it. The bib is non-transferable.
No official finishing time will be awarded if someone else is
wearing your bib.
Race Etiquette
Line up at the starting line according to how fast you plan
to run or walk the event. Slower runners and walkers should
move to the back of the race pack. Run or walk no more than
two abreast.
Race Time Limit
90 minutes
Finish line
Keep moving after you cross the finish line. Results will be
posted onsite and also at the official website at
http://www.budheatwave.org.

FAQ
Q. Can I pick up my friend’s packet?
A. Yes you can. You only need their name to do
so.
Q. Is there race day packet pick-up?
A. Official packet pickup schedule when
announced is on the Info page . We highly
recommend packet pickup be completed
on one of the designated days. However, we
realize it may be impossible for a few people
to pickup their packet at the official times. We
will have limited packet pickup the morning of
the race. You do not need to notify the Race
Director if you need to pick up your packet on
race day.
Q. What if I forget my chip or bib at home?
A. If you loose your bib, chip or you forget
them at home there will be a $10 charge to
reissue you a new bib or chip.
Q. The shirt in my packet doesn’t fit, can I
exchange it for a different size?
A. We post deadlines for both bib name
and shirt size selection, and order shirts in
advance according to what you selected if you
register by those deadlines. We estimate the
remainder. If we have any extras after the race
you are welcome to exchange, but if the race
fills, extras for exchange are unlikely.
Q. Where does the race start?
A. Check out the Info page for those details.
Q. When does the race start?
A. Check out the Info page for those details.
Q. Where do I park?
A. There is ample parking at the starting point.
Click here for the Parking Directions section of
our Info page.
Q. Will there be some type of shuttle back to
the park after the finish for those of us that
participate alone and will need a ride back to
their vehicle?
A. Start and finish are about 1/2 a mile apart.
No shuttle, you can park close to the finish and
walk to the start, or the other way around.
Q. Can I park at the finish, and walk to the start?
A. Parking is very limited at the finish, however,
we think you can park on Main St. and other
side streets as well - at your own risk! Make
sure you don’t park in a Tow Away Zone.
Q. Will there be a place to leave a drop bag for
the race?
A. Yes. You can leave a drop bag before the
race and pick it up after the race.
Q. I registered but now I can’t make it, can I get
a refund or defer my registration to next year?
A. There is NO RAINCHECK for this event.
Your entry fee for this year’s event CANNOT
be transferred to next year’s event, and there
are NO REFUNDS, no exceptions. This policy
stays in effect whether you are injured, have
an unexpected business or family emergency,
pregnancy, etc. There are NO exceptions.
Seriously.
You CAN donate your entry to charity, you will
get a cash donation receipt. Just let us know!
You can transfer your entry to another person
for a $15 administrative fee, contact us to do
so.
PLEASE NOTE that there is an immediate
disqualification for anyone who runs under
another person’s bib other than the person of
record.
Q. Okay, but can you mail my race packet to
me or can I pickup my packet after the race,
even though I’m not going to run?
A. No. All unclaimed race packets will be given
to late registrants at the race.
Q. I left early, but it looks like I won an award.
Can you mail it to me?
A. No, we do not mail out awards after the
race. You may be able to pick up your award
at a designated location, usually one of the
packet pick-up spots. Check with us via the
Contact form.
Q. My mom would like to participate but
would like to know if walkers are allowed?
A. Due to the distance of the course and the
heat, we discourage all those that are slower
and are not trained to be in the heat for
Bud Heat Wave - July 4, 2016 - BudHeatWave.org
extended periods of time. That said, I have
seen walkers that can out perform runners all
the time. So the answer is (it all depends on
your mom’s pace) if she is at a 13-15 min pace,
I would say she will be fine, however, if she is
at a 20 min pace, I would say maybe a shorter
distance race for her would be better.
Q. Are baby joggers/strollers allowed?
A. Yes, please be aware and stay clear of other
runners.
Q. Will there be Port-a-potties on the course?
A. Yes, every Aid Station will have Port-apotties.
Q: Can I have my favorite pet/dog run with
me?
A: No. The only exception is for service dogs for
those who need them.
Q. Can I wear my headphones?
A. The RRCA (our insurance provider) has a
written guideline against the use of personal
music devices in running events, as such we
strongly discourage the use of headphones in
our races.
Q. I’m running, can my spouse/family
volunteer?
A. Yes, we can use all the help we can get. They
can sign up for the volunteer schedule here.
Q. Will there be showers at the finish?
A. Yes, just as in the past.
Q. Will there be an after party, with food and
drinks?
A. Definitely!
Q. Do I need to pay extra if my family/
supporters attend the after party?
A. Definitely not!
Q. What beer will be served?
A. All depends on our sponsor! We think this
year it will be Budweiser and Michelob Ultra.
Q. Will you run out of food?
A. No way!

Running Alliance Sport (RAS) Increases Cash Prize Purse by 40% for 2016;
Age Group Winners Will Receive RAS Perk Points
FRIENDSWOOD, TX (June 15, 2016) –
Running Alliance Sport is pleased to announce
an increase in prize money for the upcoming
27th annual Baytown Bud Heatwave and all
three races of this year’s sixth annual Texas
Bridge Series.
Twelve runners, instead of eight, to include
six men and six women, will now be eligible to
win $1,000 total in prize money, an increase of
$400 from 2015.
Additionally, the top three finishers in each
male and female age group who do not win
cash will be awarded RAS Perk Points, which
can be used to discount future entries to all
Running Alliance Sport races.
“Some of us might not be able to win any
money running,” said Running Alliance Sport
race director Robby Sabban. “This is our way of
rewarding those talented runners that might
never make it into one of our race’s prize pool.”
The 27th annual Baytown Bud Heat Wave
five-mile race will be held on Monday, July 4.
Online registration, with entries running
five percent ahead of a record-setting 2015, is
in full swing at www.budheatwave.org.
The three races of the Texas Bridge Series
include the Toughest 10K Kemah (Sunday,
September 20), the Toughest 10K Galveston
(Saturday, October 15) and the La Porte By The
Bay Half Marathon (Sunday, November 20).
Each race’s overall winner, male and female,
will earn $150 instead of $125.
Runners-up will win $100 – up from $75 -while the third-place overall finisher and the
top masters runner (40 and over) will now take
home $75 versus $50 last year.
The top male and female grandmaster (50
and over) and senior grandmaster (60 and
over) finishers will receive $50 for their efforts.
These additional cash prizes are being
added in alignment with the recognition
given at Road Runners Club of America (RRCA)
state, regional and national championship
races, which Running Alliance Sport hosts two
of this year.
RAS Perk Points, Running Alliance Sport’s
brand-new runner loyalty program, are earned
when a runner registers online as an RAS
Bud Heat Wave - July 4, 2016 - BudHeatWave.org
member as opposed to doing so as a guest.
Each dollar spent earns a point and when
cashed in, results in a seven (7) percent
discount.
All first-place age group winners will have
250 RAS Perk Points added to their account
manually after the race. Second-place and
third-place age group winners will earn 200
and 150 RAS Perk Points, respectively.
With 17 available age groups each race,
this equates to a potential benefit of just over
$1,400 off future registrations at each of the
four races.
All Perk Points will be awarded after results
are declared official or a week after the race
has concluded, whichever comes later.
Since 2011, through its five races, including
the Seabrook Lucky Trail Marathon, Half
Marathon and Relays, Running Alliance Sport
has donated more than $515,000 to local
charities.

With the support of On The Run and our primary

in the six years since Running Alliance Sport
brought the Baytown Bud Heatwave back to
life, our proceeds will go to the Baytown Special
Rodeo Association.
With your generous support the last four years
of our race, we’ve in turn been able to share
that generosity with president JR Miller and his
volunteer team to the tune of just over $24,000
- with $10,000 of that coming from last year’s
race alone.

give more than just part of your entry fee to
