Unification News
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Please take a few minutes to review the information
and important dates outlined in this Newsletter. A
reminder that our next Newsletter will come out in
May and will be a special edition regarding senior
activities for May and summer information, including
summer school and August registration.
In this Newsletter is information regarding
Supplemental Information Services (SES). As a
program improvement school, year 2, the school is
required to set aside a percentage of Title I funds to
support these services. Please see the section of
Program Improvement for information regarding how
to access this support.
The HUB continues to be an important asset to our
community. Please come by and visit as there are a
variety of community outreach services available to
you and your family. Call Lorree Lewis at 275-8166
for more information.
Upper Lake Unified High School District and
Upper Lake Unified Elementary School
District are jointly exploring the possibility of
unification of the districts. Please join us for
a meeting.

All meetings begin at 6:00 pm and will be
held in the Cafeteria at Upper Lake High.
Keep an eye out on the high school marquee
and the website (www.ulhs.net) for up-todate information.
We want to hear your questions, so if you
have a question on unification, there are
FAQ question boxes at both the Elementary
School and the High School or you can email
Dina McCrea at [email protected]
Come to a meeting and be involved in the
process.
Upper Lake High School is proud to continue to offer families, students and ULHS staff the
NBC Learn K-12 website access. NBC Learn K-12 is an online resource featuring over
15,000 video resources, historic footage, images, mini-documentaries and test resources
designed for use in the K-12 classroom. The videos show students real-world stories
related to all the major subject areas, and they are correlated to all 50 State standards and
the Common Core. There are also innovative special collections, like the award-winning
“Science of the Summer Olympic Games” and “Science of NFL Football”
Students, parents/guardians and staff can access the NBC Learn website through the

PRINCIPLES OF SPORTMANSHIP
The North Coast Section of CIF (California Interscholastic Federation)
has asked that every school review the principles of sportsmanship.
There has been a significant increase in ejections this year, particularly
from sportsmanship issues:
HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS:









Emphasize the proper ideals of sportsmanship, ethical conduct
and fair play
Stress the values taught by the game
Tries to eliminate the problems that destroy the best values of
the game
Show courtesy to visiting teams and officials
Respect the judgment of sports officials
Understand the rules and standards of eligibility
Encourage leadership and use of good judgment
Recognize that athletics should promote physical, mental,
moral, social and emotional well being of athletes
Remembers that athletic contests are only a GAME – not a
matter of life and death for anyone
Athletes DO help opponents when they are in the group, DO compliment
opponents on a good play, and DO shake hands at the conclusion of an
event.
Athletes DO NOT yell at officials for calls, DO NOT use profane and
obscene language in the course of play, DO NOT vandalize opponents
facilities, and DO NOT get involved with fans during the course of play.
ULHS ATHLETICS
Sandy Coatney, Athletic Director
We are in the middle of Winter Sports for athletics
– Basketball started league play after the break,
and wrestling league meets started on January 21.
Mike Smith and Justin Dutcher, our basketball
coaches, are very happy with teams, though there
is always room for improvement. Brandon
Sneathen, our wrestling coach, is very excited
th
about the tournament win on January 12 in
Windsor, the first tournament win since he’s been
the coach. Both sports are very exciting to watch,
no matter what the score, so come down and
support the Cougars! (Schedules are available on
the school website).
Spring sports, including track, softball, and
th
baseball, start on February 9 . Students do not
need to get a new physical unless it has been a
year. However, parents/guardians will need to
sign a new athletics card, recognizing that sports
are a privilege and giving the student permission
to play. All athletes must maintain a 2.0 GPA and
have a current physical and insurance, along with
a concussion notification sheet and ejection policy
notice. Sign-ups for softball have already started.
Contact Kelly Coburn ([email protected]).
Track and baseball will have sign-ups at the
school.
Go Mighty Cougars!

ULHS MOCK TRIAL TEAM
PREPARES FOR COUNTY
COMPETITION
The ULHS 2014-2015 Mock Trial team is preparing for the Lake County
Competition on February 12. This year’s team earned its first points victory
in a scrimmage competition a few weeks ago. The team is lead by standout Defense
Attorney, Mercedes DeLosSantos, who is in her third year of Mock Trial. The
prosecution team is filled out with second year members, Isabel Rorabaugh, Valeria
Robles and freshman, Lyndsay Wade. The witnesses this year are led by Haley
Hunter and Isaiah McBee, with other first year team members.
The trial is focused on an art theft, and the students have done an amazing job of
learning each of their roles and responsibilities. Beyond that, these students must
incorporate personality into each of these roles. Their ability to speak and perform in
front of an actual judge and scorers in a real courtroom is always very impressive.
We look forward to our county competition.

Upper Lake FFA has had some successes and struggles over the past few months. Successes include placing over 160
wreaths on Veteran’s headstones at the Upper Lake Cemetery on December 13 as part of the “Wreaths Across America”
fundraiser. This brought in $815 to our FFA account which will be used to help pay for students to attend the upcoming
State FFA Leadership Conference in April.
We also hosted a very successful food and toy drive which generated close to 2,000 donated items! Missy Hill from
Healthy Start coordinated the toy donations and gave those out during the holidays, and Claudine Pedroncelli will
coordinate the food donations through the Upper Lake Community Food Program which gives out boxes on the third
Tuesday of every month at the Odd Fellows Hall in Upper Lake starting at 4 pm.
Our most recent struggle was the loss of three ewes and one goat, which were killed by predators at the School Farm on
January 1. Our students got a first-hand lesson on the hardships related to agricultural production. The California
Department of Fish and Game and the local Federal Trapper with U.S. Wildlife Services evaluated the scene and
determined it was most likely dogs that killed the animals. This was a big loss for us as these animals were going to be
used as a breeding project to generate funds for our School Farm. We hope to replace these animals in the future.
We are looking forward to the spring and the new planting season. Students are also gearing up for their “Supervised Ag
Experience (SAE)” projects which can include livestock production, gardening projects and a variety of home and
community improvement projects.
If you have any questions or would like to know more about Upper Lake FFA and ways to be involved, please contact
Erica Boomer at [email protected].

PROGRAM IMPROVEMENT &
SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATION SERVICES
Upper Lake Union High School District is in Year 2 of Program Improvement under the federal
No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Supplemental Educational Services (SES) is an available
option for students of Upper Lake High School.
SES: What is SES and how does a parent obtain a provider for their child?
Students from low-income families at continuing PI schools, whose parents did not select a
public school choice option, are eligible for Supplemental Education Services (SES). These
services are classes or tutoring which occur outside the regular school day (after school) with
educational providers approved by the State Board of Education. If the number of eligible
students who apply for the SES program exceeds the financial resources available, the lowest
achieving students from low-income families will receive SES first.
If you are interested in SES, please contact the District Office at 275-2655 by February 18,
2015. Information about program improvement and a list of State-approved vendors are also
available on our website at www.ulhs.net.
Board Policy Update: High School Graduation Requirements.

THE IMPORTANCE OF ATTENDING SCHOOL
Much



of a student’s success is determined by the following:
Good attendance
Appropriate nutrition and physical activity
Time management (school work first and TV, cell phone, iPod, YouTube,
Facebook and all other social networking second)
 Seeking help when you don’t understand.
Students should have a 90-100% attendance rate. This is the first step to success. If
they are attending school on a regular basis, we have more contact with them and
have the time to cover the curriculum. If a student misses school, trying to catch up
in seven classes becomes very difficult.

NUTRITION FACTS: Carbohydrates fall into three categories: sugars, starches and cellulose, or indigestible fiber. Not all
sugars and starches are nutritionally equal. Table sugar or sucrose provides what nutritionists call "empty calories."
People should eat more starches and cellulose, called complex carbohydrates. Whole-grain bread, potatoes, rice, wholewheat pasta, dried peas and beans, fruits and vegetables are all excellent sources of complex carbohydrates.
