Comprises over 650 vascular plant species, some of them are cantabrian
endemic species. Some abundant elements are high mountain crags
meadows, screes and mountain passes, beech wood, oak groves,
eurosiberian willow and poplar forests.

Geology
The main geologic periods are
the Carboniferous and Devonian.
There are significant Devonian
paleontological sites where
marine fossils that inhabited the
seas in that era can be easily
found: sponges, trilobites, corals,
etc.
Sustainable livestock
Cattle raising and transhumance: great
quality pastures are common, they have
been made the most out of tradicional ovine
trashumance, whose origin as an organized
activity started in the XIII Century after the
creacion of the Concejo de la Mesta.
Stockbreeding has coexisted in perfect harmony with
some endemic vegetation taxons, proving the balance
between humans and biological diversity.
