Mercury Comet Glass
lnterval Selector Windshield Wipers
Gomet's safety glass windshield is laminated
The lnterval Selector Windshield Wipers, optional at
extra cost with washer for all 1965 Comets, are an
exclusive "first" which competitors won't have until
next year, or later.
The coaxial switch for the wipers, which utilize electropneumatic control, has a dwell adjustment at the center for timing intermittent wiper operation and 3position outer control as the selection switch. The
three positions are "off", "constant" and "intermit.
tent", the latter providing the selective period of dwell
between wipers. Here's how the wipers operate:
In heauy rains, the wiper will maintain constant highspeed action of 140 wipes per minute.
For all but heauy rains,Ihe wiper can be adjusted so as
to provide a "pause" or "dwell" between each wiping
cycle of 2 strokes, The pause is adjustable by the
driver at from two to more than 10 seconds so that
the frequency of wiping may be made to match the
precipitation, car speed and traff ic conditions.
For passing, temporary continuous high-speed operation is automatically provided during acceleration, as
the manifold vacuum drops. When the car is no longer
accelerating and manifold pressure stabilizes, the
wiper motor is automatically returned to the pre-set
intermittent operation.
safety glass made with two layers of polished plate
glass and a plastic inner layer.
Comet's side windows are tempered (solid) glass
made with a scientific case-hardening process.
Scientific heat treatment produces glass that resists
inlpact, and, il broken, breaks into small chunks
or powder. Comet's rear windows for both sedans
and station wagons are tempered (solid) glass.
Tinted glass, a factory-installed optlon, is available for windshield alone, or for windshield and all
windows. Tinted glass deflects and filters out
bright glare for safer, more comfortable driving.

1965 Comet 200
The 6-cylinder engine for 1965 Comets, an improved
7-main-bearing version of the 2OO-cubic-inch thin-wall
engine, incorporates many design changes and
refinements affecting performance, reliability and
"6"
smoothness. Among these are the 7-main bearing
crankshaft, new cylinder head with larger intake and
exhaust valves, new camshaft with higher valve lift and
longer valve opening periods, and a new 38-ampere
alternator replacing the 30-ampere generator.
Hiehlights of 1965 lmprovements
7-main-bearing crankshaft-The 7-main-bearing crank-
shaft, held in the cylinder block in seven bearings
instead of four, runs with less deflection for quieter
operation and longer bearing life. Having seven main
bearings permits reducing the number of crankshaft
counterweights from seven to four to affect a signifiThe illustration aboue shous the new cylinder bloch for the 7-main bearing Comet
200 "6" engine. The cylinder bloch is inuerted in the illustration. The neut 7-main
bearing cranhshaft is Shown at the right.
Other Comet 200 "6" lmprovements
Carburetor-Several improvements are
incor-
porated in the carburetor including provision for
water-warming the automatic choke and improved
idle control.
Electrical system-Extensive improvements
cant reduction in crankshaft weight. The crankshaft is
precision-cast nodular iron with an integral rubberfloated vibration damper.
New cylinder block-The block is cast with three additional bearing supports to accommodate the 7-main
bearing crankshaft. The additional weight in the cylinder block practically balances out the weight reduction
of the crankshaft.
The cylinder block is durable, reliable alloy-iron pre.
cision cast for minimum weight. (Front engine cover is
a precision-machined aluminum casting.)
New cylinder head and larger valves-The new cylinder
head provides larger intake and exhaust ports for freer
breathing intake and exhaust. lncreases in valve head
diameter and valve head are shown in this comparison:
are
lntake
incorporated in the electrical system.
New pivotless contact points, designed for more
precise manufacturing, afford more precise point
seating with greater stability and better alignment. Reduced mass of the contact points serves
to reduce point bounce for improved high-speed
Head
operation.
New 38-ampere alternator in place of 30-ampere
generator. New 2-unit regulator.
New 45-ampere-hour battery with l-piece hard
rubber cover and increased electrolyte capacity.
The battery is tailored to the new alternator
system.
Neoprene rubber hose-The neoprene rubber
hose for the radiator connections, being more
resilient than the hose used previously, doesn't
squeeze out from under the clamps and take permanent set. This means some torque is retained
for
each clamp. Post-type clamps are used for
conn ections.
Larger oil pump-The oil pump for the 7-mainbearing.engine is a rotor type with 11ft higher
capacity for the full-pressure lubrication system.
Non-adjustable rocker arms-Adjustment screw
is eliminated from the push-rod end of each rocker
arm to reduce rocker arm weight and for increased
reliability.

Higher compression-The compression ratio is increased
from 8.7:1 to 9.2:1 for higher eff iciency.
Pistons and rings-The spread-strut design slipper-type
pistons, cast with the struts near the ends of the pin
boss, helps the pistons to conform more closely to the
cylinder bores. The pistons are cast aluminum alloy
with steel autothermic expansion control struts. A new
molybdenum-filled top ring replaces the chrome'
platLd ring used previously. The molybdenum wearing
surface minimizes ring and bore wear for longer life.
Larger distributor and pump drive shaft-Diameter of the
hei-shape intermediate shaft for the distributor and
oil pump is increased trom Yq" to s/rs" for durability.
1965 Mercury Comet V-8's
The 1965 Comet V-8's incorporate extensive improve.
ments for better breathing, electrical system performance and basic cylinder block construction, includ-
ing several refinements which were introduced as
1964r/2 ru nning changes. Highlights:
Better breathing-Combustion chamber configuration
and exhaust ports revised and intake valve-head
diameter increaseC from l.67" to 1.78" for all 1965
Comet V-8's for better breathing and ,high-perform'
ance efficiency.
lmproved carburetion-Larger 2-barrel carburetor with
20/6 higher capacity introduced. Vacuum'piston con'
trol for automatic choke for all V-8 carburetors.
lmproved electrical systems-New alternator, regulator,
distributor, ignition cables, spark plugs and batteryall premium quality.
Smoother driveline-Cylinder block casting revised for
6-bolt in place of S-bolt attachment and larger mounting surface for clutch housing or torque converter.
Larger 6-bolt mounting reduces driveline vibration
and affords smoother performance.
lmproved cooling system-New fans, top tank, water
pump impeller, radiator hose and long-life drive belts.
Higher compression ratios for increased performance and
efficiency. Compression ratio of regular-fuel Comet
Cyclone 289 V-8 is 9.3:1 while the compression ratio
of the premium-fuel Comet Cyclone Super 289 V'8 is
10.0:1-the highest, most efficient ever for Comet
engines.
o
The Comet V-8's are well "over-square" with
large 4ttdiameter pistons traveling short strokes.
The short strokes mean lower friction and less
piston travel per car mile.
Valve train has quiet, self-adjusting hydraulic
valve lifters actuated by a precision-molded,
high-lift camshaft. Light-weight rocker arms,
made of precision-molded nodular iron, are
individually mounted on independent ball studs.
This mounting eliminates the usual rocker arm
shaft and retainers to obtain a reduction in reciprocating friction and inertia forces for improved
engine efficiency.
Hydraulic valve lifters are actuated by the hiehlift cams on the precision-cast nodular iron
camshaft. The hydraulic tappets utilize highpressure oil from the engine lubrication system
to keep each lifter continuously in contact with
its cam and valve-lifter body. Plungers in the
hydraulic tappets are chrome-plated for greater
resistance to wear and corrosion.
All Comet engines are built with durable precision-cast alloy-iron cylinder blocks, cylinder
heads, and intake and exhaust manifolds. An outstanding advantage of alloy iron is its versatility.
After casting, it is easy to machine or process, yet
can stand high temperatures. lt has good expansion
and contraction qualities which make it ideal for
cylinder walls and cylinder heads. Free graphite
in the alloy-iron affords natural lubrication . . . also
soaks up and retains oil to provide minute pockets
of oil on the surface.
Aluminum-alloy parts-Precision-cast and precision-machined aluminum-alloy parts are used
where aluminum is advantageous. Among these
parts are pistons, engine front cover, carburetor
body, carburetor spacer block, fuel pump body
and oil pump housing.
Cylinder block-Alloy-iron 90" V-8 cylinder block is

block is revised to provide a larger mounting surface
and 6-bolt attachment of clutch housing or torque
converter for greater rigidity and increased driveline
smooth ness.
Cylinder heads and exhaust manifolds are made with
the same precision-casting techniques as the cylinder
block.
lntake manilold-Made of alloy-iron precision cast by
shell-molding process, the intake manifold has equal
length over-and-under intake passages. Unrestricted
exhaust flow through the manifold between the left
and right cylinder banks provides heating for incoming
fuel-air mixture.
Crankshaft-Made of nodular iron and precision'cast
for high strength with minimum weight, the crankshaft
is a 5-main-bearirig design. Crankshaft has 6 integral
counterweights plus an external counterweight at
each end.
Vibration damper
is installed on the front end of the

Power Transfer rear axle is a new design with a 7'
plate clutch pack. This design incorporates three
bonded plates to provide 5OTo more friction surface
than previous axles of this tYPe.
The Power Transfer rear axle is simply a conventional
axle plus the clutch pack. The conventional differential
case and case cover are machined to provide notches
for the dog-eared steel clutch plates, while a differ'
ential lubricator is added as well as a pair of lubricant
scoups for additional cooling of the clutch pack'
The facing material for the bonded plates is similar
to that used for automatic transmission clutch packs.

Pressure-balanced design means
the hydraulic fluid is
under pressure on both sides of the impeller vanes.
This is accomplished by providing four intake and
exhaust ports instead of two. With the g-vane impeller,
four vanes are always sending hydraulic fluid 'under
indexed pressure to the power cyiinder.
The increased number of vanes and ports for the new
pump contributes to quieter operation and reduces
pulsations in the hydraulic system. The only load on
the hydraulic pump is the belt load.
lntegral hydraulic reservoir wraps around the pump part
of the assembly. Making the reservoir integrai with
the pump results in a more compact assembly, per_
mits.short direct passages from reservoir to-pump
and improves the mounting on the engine.
Other Steering System Features
Comet steering system has recirculating ball-and-nut
type gear. ln this unit, the ball-and-nut assembly that
controls the steering linkage is driven by recirculating
steel balls. The steel balls reduce friction, lessen wear
on gears, and reduce need for adjustment.
16-inch steeringwheel, for both manual and opt. power
steering, affords improved feel with light touch.
Low-friction needle bearings for both the upper and lower
bearings on sector shaft reduce steering efforts.
Permanently lubricated idler arm bushings of new design
have rubber bushing sliding within a steel shell.

Mercury Comet Self-Adjusting Brakes
Comet's hydraulic brakes are duo.servo type with
self-adjusters which can keep the brakes adjusted
mechanically for life of the linings. The self'adjusting
mec'hanism, consisting of a cable, cable guide, ratchet
and adjuster screw assembly, adjusts the brakes'
when applied during reverse braking, more precisely
than it can be done bY hand.
Durable brake linings of molded asbestos up to Yq" thick are
compounded for fade resistance, long service and quiet operation.
Full-cast drums-Comet V-8's larger brakes have full'cast drums
and backs for front wheels for greater smoothness in operation.
Gomet parking brake, actuated by a brake
handle mounted just left of the steering column
applies the rear wheel brakes. The parking'brake
conduit
is nylon lined for smoother operation,
durabil ity and reliabilitY.
Rear wheel brakes are a combination of cast-iron drums and
stamped-steel backs for all models. Labyrinth seal keeps dirt and
water from brake mechanism. Curved edge of brake backing plate
mates with groove in brake drum edge.
Vacuum-Assisted Power Brakes*
Power assistance reduces pedal effort by 4OTo. The
power brakes can be either factory' or dealer'installed.
Comet's power brakes utilize manifold vacuum to assist operation
of the brake pedal . . . to provide easy, gentle stops with less pedal
pressure. Vacuum power assistance is available at all times when
ihe engine is turning over. ln addition, a vacuum reserve will
immedi-ately provide additional power-assisted stops when engine
vacuum is not available. Even with all vacuum reserve depleted'
the brakes will adequately stop the car (but somewhat higher brake

Approximately 7 years of development.work by Ford
fubior Compaiy engineers, aimed toward improvingtire
uniformity,'along with improved appearance and longer
tire life, preceded the introduction of these tires on the
1965 Comet. A special tire uniformity testing machine
was designed at Ford [ngineering for use in the development of these new tires.

Better traction and improved braking.
Cooler running.
Up to l0% or 12% longer tire life'
Better directional stability, handling and ride.
The 1965 Comet tires are the low'silhouette, widetread design with bias'cord construction, similar to
the tires inlroduced on the 1964 Lincoln Continental'
These high-eff iciency tires provide improved handling
and stability and as much as IOVoto t2/slonger tire
life, based on vehicle testing. lmproved ride and
appearance are other advantages. Other features:
Bias-cord angle construction-Cords are set at an angle
to provide the advantages of a low'silhouette tire
without any sacrifice in tire deflection.
tVider tread and larger footprint-Afford tire traction and
better cushioning of irregularities.
Contoured shoulder design-Shoulders on the tread are
reduced to afford better stability, improved handling
on curves and better cooling.
