A COMMUNITY OF CONSCIENCE
Call 240-380-2673 and ask us about the NEW IKF Wait List Club!
Years ago, the word “retirement” might have evoked images of white-haired couples sitting in rocking chairs on
their front porches. But with both men and women living longer and enjoying better health into their later years,
retirement has become an extremely active phase of life in which many seniors finally have time to devote to causes
and interests that have previously taken a backseat to careers or family obligations.
Marilyn Leist
Executive Director
Today, there are nearly 52.4 million people age 60 or older in the United States, and by 2030, one in every
five Americans will be age 60 or older. More than 23 percent of people older than age 65 engage in volunteer
activity. In this issue we are very proud to tell the stories of Ingleside at King Farm members and staff for whom
the words “give back” resonate each and every day. From simple acts of kindness and expressions of love and joy
in the Health Center to significant commitments of work and time at Habitat for Humanity, IKF has stepped
up to become a community of conscience. A community of which I am very proud.

Debbie Loube’s desk is considered to be the command center of the community, and she has become a major
resource for all members and staff at Ingleside at King Farm. As Volunteer Coordinator, Debbie manages and
organizes IKF volunteer programs, coordinating and pairing passions, people and projects. Debbie explains,
“The members at Ingleside at King Farm have a well-established history of being active in volunteer work. In
my role as Volunteer Coordinator I work closely with the member’s Volunteer Committee to connect both
resident and staff volunteers in roles they enjoy, enabling them to make a difference with residents in every area
of the community with a special emphasis on the Health Center neighborhoods. We welcome individuals from
outside the community to volunteer as well. Our programs provide people the chance to help out in a variety of
volunteer services, particularly in summer months. Our volunteer programs underscore our dedication to social
accountability. This is a very real measure of Ingleside at King Farm’s commitment to its mission, its stakeholders
and our greater community. It demonstrates fulfillment of the requirements and expectations of a true not-forprofit organization.”
TEAMING UP FOR HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
Ingleside at King Farm staff and friends volunteered with Habitat for Humanity
Metro Maryland (HFHMM) to help finish a new townhouse community in
Gaithersburg. Volunteers from the continuing care retirement community
painted and cleaned newly-constructed homes in July and August in the Maple
Hill Townhome Community.
“Helping give someone a new home is a tremendously rewarding experience,
especially given the lack of affordable housing in this area,” says Diana Cirone,
Ingleside at King Farm’s Director of Life Enrichment who spearheaded the
volunteer effort. “Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity is a great hands-on
experience, so at the end of the day our team really felt a sense of accomplishment.”
The townhouse complex is HFHMM’s first new construction project since 2008.
The community involves 19 townhouses, each with three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. The homes will be sold to applicants earning
less than 60 percent of the Area Median Income.
“There’s a strong spirit among staff and members here of wanting to give back to our community,” says Marilyn Leist, Executive
Director at Ingleside at King Farm. “Ingleside at King Farm is a beautiful community, but we know there are people not far from here
who are not so fortunate.”
A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE, A GREAT PLACE TO GROW.

a life of good work & great causes
Beginning his career as an artist, Ingleside at King Farm member, Rev. Jim
Macdonell used art in his daily life as a pastor, a civil rights activist, and the
head of a non-profit. Having retired several years ago, he continues to devote
his time and talent to sketching out the best of humankind on his cartoon
pad. This Ingleside at King Farm resident has become so popular and prolific
that our community has released his body of work as a book.
Rev. Macdonell is 81, and his latest project is doing a weekly caricature of his
fellow community residents and staff, which was recently highlighted in the
Washington Post. To date, he has sketched over 100 drawings for our internal
member newsletter, the Ingleside Insider.
Rev. Macdonell explains the premise. “In the book, Ingleside Personalities, each caricature is accompanied by a short
biography of the person featured. Everyone here at IKF has a story, our community is full of extraordinarily interesting
people. Ingleside has residents who worked everywhere from the
State Department to the World Bank.”
In the late 1960s, he drew a civil rights editorial cartoon which was
published in the Washington Post. He later organized and served
30 years as a President of the Equal Rights Center, a civil rights
non-profit based in Washington, DC.
Executive Director of Ingleside at King Farm, Marilyn Leist, says
Macdonell’s cartoons and caricatures have brought the community
closer together. “His cartoons are helping us get to know each other
better,” she said.
