Barber Concerts
Hello!
T
he spring term has so much to offer by way of concerts and
events that it is difficult to know where to start. We have a
multitude of professional and student performances taking
place in both the Bramall Music Building and The Barber
Institute of Fine Arts – with the inaugural Birmingham
International Piano Festival (6-8 March) making the most of these
contrasting venues, by presenting concerts in both the Elgar Concert Hall
and Barber Concert Hall.
The piano takes centre stage, with the festival in early March, and two piano
concerto performances with our student orchestras. We welcome David
Quigley on 22nd March as he performs Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F with
the Philharmonic Orchestra, and on Friday 13 March the winner of the Music
Society Concerto Competition, Steven Teo performs Tchaikovsky’s Piano
Concerto No. 1 with the Symphony Orchestra to kick off the University Arts and
Science Festival (13-22 March).
The Barber Evening Concert Series features University Ensembles in Residence,
internationally acclaimed vocal ensemble, VOCES8, the Dante Quartet, plus a
performance from the Nash Ensemble, in this, their 50th anniversary year.
We open up the Dome room in the Bramall Music Building for a variety of
performances and events, including special ‘Evensong’ deep listening sessions
from BEAST on 19 March for the Arts and Science Festival, and two evenings
of music on the BEASTdome system in January. The Dome is also home to our
free Monday lunchtime student recital series this term, where we present a
variety of ensembles and soloists, including early music groups and University
Camerata.
We hope you enjoy many of the concerts on offer and support the Arts and
Science Festival and the Birmingham International Piano Festival alongside our
regular series of student performances and lunchtime and evening concerts.

Harnessing a combination of sound worlds, The Nave to the

harmonies of Rachmaninov, through to the brilliance of the
Rat Pack and musicals. Created with repertoire taken from
VOCES8’s debut No. 1 selling album on Decca Classics, this
programme aims to exploit the acoustic capacities of the Barber
Concert Hall. The result is a stunning concert presentation
unique to this wonderful classical vocal ensemble. VOCES8 are
joined by Birmingham University Singers in a performance of
Mendelssohn’s Denn er hat seinen Englen befohlen über dir and
Tippett’s evocative arrangement of Steal Away.

Concert pianist Kenneth Hamilton returns to the
Barber with an intriguing tour of some of the most
imaginative and capricious 19th-century pieces for
piano, starting with Beethoven’s impatiently eccentric
Op. 77 Fantasy, moving through Mendelssohn,
Chopin and Liszt, and coming full circle with
Schumann’s glorious Fantasy Op. 17, dedicated to
Liszt, but secretly brimming with hidden references
to Beethoven himself.
BEAST and SOUNDkitchen join forces to present two
evenings of delicious electronic music, with artists from
Birmingham, the UK, Portugal, Italy, Iceland and the US.
Thor Magnusson brings BEASTdome to life with
his Threnoscope, a live generative piece of immersive
spectral music, and eclectic American composer Sam
Pluta returns to Birmingham from New York with
members of his Wet Ink Ensemble to present a new
extended piece for instruments and electronics.
Meanwhile, SOUNDkitchen brings artists from their
successful 2014 series back to the table: Sarah Hughes,
Kostis Kilymis and Samuel Rodgers combine piano,
electronics and field recordings, and Chris Herbert
and Nicholas Bullen exchange found sound to create
beautiful textures for extended listening. Completing our
well-rounded meal, Turkish music specialist Eliot Bates
cooks up sound for traditional Turkish string instrument,
the oud, and the BEASTdome system. Manfredi Clemente
plays a short work based on improvised piano and ‘noinput’ mixing sounds, and Portuguese composer Angela
Da Ponte premieres a piece made from the sorrowful
chants of her homeland, the Azores.

In this concert three of the University’s choir join forces
to present a concert giving a brief history of choral
chamber music with Simon Halsey and two talented
student conductors. The Music Society’s female voices
chamber choir perform a programme from the Baroque
period (c.1600 - c.1750) before passing the baton to
the mixed voices chamber choir as they take us into the
Classical and Romantic eras (c.1750 - c.1900). Bringing
the programme to modern day will be the award-winning
University Women’s Choir who will perform choral
works from the 20th century, written entirely
by female composers.
