Salon conducted under the approved rules of the Photographic Society of America and under the patronage of the Federation Internationale de l’art Photographique (2013/077) Front Page Photograph (Cropped) - Shepherd Life 5340 by Branislav Brkic, Serbia 2013/077 90th SCOTTISH CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE AN HISTORIC RETURN The Scottish Photographic Federation are delighted to bring you the 90th Scottish International Salon of Photography, after an abscence of five years. For 2013, we decided to come back with a ‘Print Only’ Salon to trial the new Salon Website we had built, with the capability of handling online entry and the necessary database capabilities to run the International. For our first year back, we were not quite sure how many entries we would get. In the end the entry exceeded all our expectations with just short of 4,500 prints. We think this is the biggest International Print entry in the UK, in the past year. Our new website made the task of processing it so much easier. To the Mono and Colour Print Sections, we introduced a Nature Print section, and a Wildlife Award after several exhibitors requested it. All three sections exceeded our expectations, with 2015 Colour, 1636 Mono and 822 Nature prints being entered by 638 authors, from 47 Countries. This large entry did however mean a change to the judging weekend. We ended up having to add an extra day’s Judging to accomodate the massive entry. Our arrangements to forward entries to the Edinburgh and Northern Counties Internationals has proved popular, as has the option of sending mounted or un-mounted prints, all of which we will continue for next year. 90th SCOTTISH SALON FOREWORD SALON For 2014 we will also be adding the Digital Sections back on to our Scottish Salon with upload of your files. Please keep an eye on our website for details or sign up for our Scottish Salon Newsletter, the e-Salon, also via the website, for up to date information. This Exhibition sees us return to an ‘historic venue’ for the Scottish Salon in Brechin, 90 years after it was previously hosted here - it is also our 90th Scottish Salon. We are very pleased that we could accept Brechin Photographic Society’s invitation to host the Scottish Salon Exhibition in Brechin in their 125th Anniversary year. To have the great-grandson of W Shaw Adamson, who was the Scottish Salon Chairman and SPF Honourary President 90 years ago to present the Awards this year, is the icing on the cake for us! Libby Smith, MPAGB EFIAP APAGB HonSPF ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Our thanks must firstly go to this year’s Judges who had to change their travel arrangements, to enable us to hold a longer judging weekend. They worked extremely hard over the weekend to select our exhibition from the mountain of prints, but did so with enthusiasm and good humour. The quality and variety of the prints on display is a credit to their endeavours. My sincere thanks also goes to Rachel and Ian Findlay, of Dumfries, for designing our new website for us, and being on call 24/7 to help over the past months, while we got to grips with the new system. Thanks must also go to the team of individuals who came along to help process all of the entries. They had a mammoth task this year. Thanks also to everyone who helped out on our very busy extended three-day Judging weekend. My sincere thanks to every one of them. There has been a long association between the Scottish Photographic Federation and Brechin Photographic Society. “Following an idea first mooted by the Brechin Photographic Association in 1902, the Perth Society of Natural Science Photo Section hosted a meeting to discuss the idea of a photographic organization being formed to which Clubs from all over Scotland could be invited.” - 1st Salon Catalogue Extract In 1903 the Scottish Photographic Federation (SPF) was formed, and in 1904 the SPF decided to hold the 1st Scottish National Photographic Salon, the forerunner of this International Exhibition. “In pursuance of their desire to raise the standard of Pictorial Photography .... an exhibition open to the works of all Photographers resident in Scotland, also to works of Scotsmen residing out of Scotland... workers of eminence in various parts of the world will be specially invited to send selections of their work” - 1st Salon Catalogue Extract. The then Brechin Photographic Association was one of the Societies to take on the organising, running and hosting of the Photographic Salon, and in 1923 the 15th Scottish Salon Exhibition was held in Brechin Mechanic’s Institute. It’s Chairman was W Shaw Adamson DL JP of Careston Castle, which was featured on the 15th Salon Catalogue cover (right). More pages from the 15th Scottish Salon Catalogue are shown below. Thanks to Philip Davies of Swansea International for his help in advertising our Salon, to the Holy Family Church Mossend for the use of their hall for our Judging. Thanks to Dumfries CC for the loan of frames; Brechin Mechanics Institute for the use of their venue; to Angus Council and Hugh Campbell Adamson for their support. That the Scottish Photographic Federation should select Brechin as the venue for the 90th International Scottish Salon of Photography exactly ninety years after it was last held here, is due less to the efforts of those who have worked so untiringly for its success this year, but more to the zeal and enthusiasm of those early members of the Brechin Photographic Association who laid the foundations of both organisations. Formed 125 years ago, in October 1888, the members of Brechin Photographic Association led the way with their eagerness to embrace the art of photography and its associated technology to such an extent that they are credited with initiating the formation of the federation of scottish photographic societies in 1903. So enthusiastic was the support of the Brechin members for the Federation’s Annual Exhibition of Scottish work, that in 1923 the city was selected to host the 15th Scottish National Salon and the Association’s first President, the late William Shaw Adamson of Careston, became the Salon Chairman and Honorary President of the Scottish Federation. Whist both organisations have successfully withstood the challenges of time, varying support and changing technology, their administration of what is now an International Salon has placed the Scottish Photographic Federation amongst the leading photographic organisations in the world and made this year’s event the largest print salon in Britain. We are therefore delighted to welcome back the 90th International Scottish Salon of Photography to our city and Hugh Campbell Adamson, the great grandson of William Shaw Adamson of Careston, to present the awards. Peter B George, President Brechin Photographic Society A special thank you must go to the members of Brechin P S, in particular, their President Peter George for all the hard work and fund raising that has been put in by them, over recent months, on the Salon’s behalf. Many congratulations also on your 125th Anniversary! We hope you will support all of the sponsors and advertisers who have supported us this year, without whom our job would be so much harder. ‘The First Car in Angus’ (circa 1918) taken by W Shaw Adamson, 15th Scottish Salon Chairman & SPF Honourary President Reproduced from the original glass plate for the SPF Centenary Exhibition Finally, a massive thank you to all of you, the entrants. Thank you for supporting the Scottish Salon of Photography. Congratulations to those of you who were successful and we look forward to seeing your work next year - Hopefully another record year for entries! James D Ross, a founder member of both Brechin P A, and the SPF, was also one of the 15th Scottish Salon organisers, as well as being SPF Treasurer (1921-1927). He served on the Committee of the SPF for 25 years. JD Ross was also a prominent Salon Exhibitor for a number of years. Two of his photographs can be seen right. All judging the Scottish Salon. An insightful choice by the Salon Chairman I feel !! It was an honour to be asked to adjudicate at this years salon. We viewed approximately 4,500 entries. Can you imagine the logistics and the massive effort that Libby Smith, aided by husband Neil and their willing team of volunteers have put into this event, a fantastic effort. The organisation on the judging weekend was slick, precise and all dealt with in good humour. Couple that with some good hospitality and two very convivial evenings, allowed the judging to flow smoothly and enjoyably. One of the real plus points was the high calibre of the work submitted both from the UK, but also from abroad, and in particular from China. This added to the variety, but also gives the final selection a truly International flavour. Not only was the subject matter full of interest, but it showed good technical ability and a high level of emotive, atmospheric and creative input by many of the authors. There appears to be a massive move away from the more conventional image, except of course in the Natural History section, towards some innovative, cleverly manipulative work particularly in the colour prints, which sat nicely alongside the softer more delicate traditional images. The Mono section was dominated by some superb portraiture and environmental re-portage style work. The awards in some ways almost chose themselves, and were richly deserved in such a massive number of entries. We made the effort to make our choices as varied in style and content as we could, some of them going to highly emotional images, some given to quiet and contemplative work. It was particularly pleasing to see a significant number of Scottish authors picking up awards and gaining acceptances. I would add that some of the natural history section’s images were at times short of technical quality, but again those selected were of a very high calibre indeed. Our thanks once again go to the organisers for a really pleasurable weekend of judging.
