BMIHMS is a preferred destination Being French, it would have been a lot easier to attend a hotel school in Switzerland. I spoke to the principal of the Brisbane school where I spent time as an exchange student about my future; he told me about a very good hotel school in the Blue Mountains, and suggested that if I liked Australia, I should check it out. Well, I did like Australia so I looked into BMIHMS and spoke to my parents about it. I’m very lucky to have such understanding parents because they felt that I should go for it, and if it didn’t work out, then at least I would have spent a year in Australia and improved my English. So I did go for it, and I’ve never looked back! Be adaptable and seize opportunities Studying at BMIHMS definitely gave me a solid background in hospitality. You learn on-site, first hand, what it’s like to run a hotel, as you go through the different divisions. The industry placements are key to a student’s success because you learn how to get a job and conduct an interview, as well as gain a comprehensive overview of the industry. The internship I did during my time at BMIHMS certainly helped me secure my first job because people would say: “Oh, you worked at the Four Seasons in Sydney” and of course would recognise the name. Potential employers are not so much interested in what you did while working for a company like that, but rather the culture that you’ve inherited and that you’ve proven yourself in a respected hotel management company. BMIHMS is a preferred destination The main reason, when I applied for the school was it was located in Australia. I think Australia has always been a dream country to visit therefore and opportunity to study and work in so that was the number one reason. I did compared Blue Mountains to the Swiss Hotel School. At that point in time they said the quality and the standard of the Blue Mountains school was similar to the Swiss school and that it was upcoming so the choice was quite easy then to choose between Switzerland and Australia. Were you always interested in studying hotel management or hospitality? It was actually my passion after when I finish high school. I used to play golf but I was always into the hotel the food industry as a hobby or interest. It was suitable for me with the obviously attraction of Australia. For me it was almost a bonus that I received an education and a fantastic one at that! Have you relied on the networks you made at BMIHMS? I have used the network, yes. When I landed my job as the General Manager for the golf resort in Thailand, I got that job through a student who was in the same year as I was at the school. His best friend was the son of the owner of the golf resort so he actually contacted me in Vietnam when I was working there and hired me to be their General Manager in Thailand.
