Your letters, emails and calls repeatedly state that you value Vegas PBS as a trusted programming source that is uniquely different from commercial broadcasting, treating audiences as citizens and not simply consumers. As recent ratings results illustrate, that approach continues to create valued programming that Nevadans want to watch. For the 2013-14 television season, PBS had the 5th largest primetime household rating among all broadcast and cable networks, up from 8th the prior year and 11th two years ago. While most over the air broadcast networks are losing audience, PBS is growing audience with significantly larger viewership than commercial cable channels like HBO, Discovery, Disney, CNN, FOX, HGTV or A&E. Locally, Vegas PBS maintained its status as the second most-watched PBS station in the U.S., based on our percentage of whole-day local audience. Programming highlights include Ken Burns’ The Roosevelts: An Intimate History, which reached more than 33.3 million national viewers across the seven nights of the series. An average of 13.2 million viewers tuned in to Season 4 of Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey, reinforcing its status as PBS’ highest-rated drama in history. Viewers also enjoyed new history and science programs about JFK from American Experience, NOVA and Secrets of the Dead. Our sesquicentennial programs last month including Makers: Women in Nevada History, Restoration Neon and The Story of Classic Las Vegas reached more than 100,000 viewers. Local series and specials like Election 2014, Inside Education, Nevada Week in Review and Surviving Sin City covered meaningful issues, while digital productions like Backyard Sessions and Stories of Service presented local musicians and heroic veterans. Our multi-platform vision of public service television reflects how video content is “consumed” in our increasingly mobile world. In addition to our TV services every month, Americans watch more than 415 million PBS videos across web, mobile and connected device platforms. In September, streaming on PBSKIDS.org reached 281 million downloads nationally with more than 1.6 million in Southern Nevada! This educational impact is improving the literacy and STEM preparedness of our local kids. None of these accomplishments would be possible without the continued financial support of our members. As we embark on the last on-air fundraising drive of the calendar year, we are pleased to bring you new episodes of some of your favorite series: Downton Abbey Rediscovered, Antiques Roadshow, American Masters, Nature, NOVA and PBS arts programs. We hope you’ll enjoy these programs and choose to make a donation to support your favorites, as well as the programs you enjoy on Vegas PBS all year long. Have a safe and happy holiday season. From the 1880s through World War II, the United States advanced the science of aeronautics, propulsion, navigation and sound with inventions that were both functional and artistic: locomotives, fighter planes, yachts and the world’s largest pipe organ. Sadly, few of these icons from our past remain. Now, eight national heirlooms are rescued from the junkyard and painstakingly restored to their original glory, offering poignant glimpses of days gone by. Follow the dramatic restorations from coast to coast: the world’s largest pipe organ in Atlantic City; a surviving 1920s fire engine from Kansas City; a Wisconsin “fish car” designed to transport live fish by train; a priceless carrousel; a World War II spy plane; one of the first U.S. yachts to round Cape Horn; and a famous steam locomotive. The sheer scale of these restorations is daunting, especially when combined with budgets, deadlines and dangerous equipment. There are no blueprints, only clues from history, science and the memories of mechanics and veterans. This series will take the place of repeat episodes of This Old House and Ask This Old House, which will return to the schedule in February. December 10 at 8 p.m. Nature: Moment of Impact: Jungle When animals of astounding ability connect with each other and the world around them there is a “moment of impact.” The world is filled with these unique moments created by animals whose abilities and behaviors are incredible to behold, like the violent collision of cheetah with gazelle, the blink-of-an-eye strike of a deadly snake and the amazing dexterity of an elephant’s trunk as it feeds, fights or reaches out with affection. The latest technologies takes us inside the animal to present an innovative and revolutionary look at the bioengineering of “how animals work.” December 10 at 9 p.m. NOVA: 3D Spies of WWII Jeff Palmer and his turkeys in a forest in central Florida Think Wednesday Wednesdays from 8 p.m. - 11 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 December 3 at 8 p.m. Best of Birds Watch a compilation of the most compelling, emotional and even humorous stories about bird behavior, intelligence and flight. This special presentation draws from 16 notable films, including the Emmy-award winning My Life as a Turkey and An Original DUCKumentary. Also represented are sequences from Hummingbirds: Magic in the Air, Birds of the Gods, Raptor Force, Moment of Impact, A Murder of Crows, Love in the Animal Kingdom, Deep Jungle and other programs. 18 VEGAS PBS S O U RC E During World War II, Hitler’s scientists developed terrifying new weapons of mass destruction. Alarmed by rumors about advanced rockets and missiles, Allied intelligence recruited a team of brilliant minds from British universities and Hollywood studios to a country house near London. Here, they secretly pored over millions of air photos shot at great risk over German territory. The photos led to devastating Allied bombing raids that were crucial setbacks to the German rocket program. With 3D graphics that recreate exactly what the photo spies saw, the film tells the suspenseful, previously untold story of air photo intelligence that played a vital role in defeating Hitler. December 10 at 10 p.m. Nazi Mega Weapons: U-Boat Case To create a haven in port for their lethal U-boat submarines, the Nazis built massive, impenetrable concrete submarine pens. Structures too immense to be hidden, they were constructed to withstand WWII pilot Jimmy Taylor with the spitfire world, and reach across Asia for two thousand miles. Their great beauty may appear cold and forbidding, but the Himalayas are actually rich with a surprising array of plants and animals. Snow leopards, red pandas, Asiatic black bears, musk deer, snub-nosed monkeys, Tibetan foxes and high-flying birds live here, as well as enormous goat-like creatures that may have been the source of the original Golden Fleece for which Jason and the Argonauts searched. December 24 at 9 p.m. NOVA: Building the Great Cathedrals Neil Armstrong direct hits from even the biggest Allied bombs. Such was their size and strength that these pens survive today, a testament to their engineering. December 17 at 8 p.m. Nature: Elsa’s Legacy: The Born Free Story This is the story behind Born Free, a book and later a film that forever changed the way we think about wildlife. An orphaned lion cub named Elsa was raised by conservationists Joy and George Adamson, and then released into the wild. The Adamson’s diaries, home movies and detailed records reveal an intimate look into their pioneering work and unique relationship with lions and leave us with a new appreciation for the world of animals we never knew until Elsa opened our eyes. December 17 at 9 p.m. NOVA: Making Stuff Wilder David Pogue explores bold innovations inspired by the Earth’s greatest inventor, life itself. From underwater wi-fi based on dolphin communication, to robotic “mules” and “cheetahs” for the military, to swarms of robotic bees, Pogue travels the world seeing the “wildest” ideas put into action in new inventions and technologies. It is a journey that sees today’s bacteria turned into tomorrow’s metallurgists, viruses building batteries, and even DNA, the Code of Life, put to work in “living” computers. ‘‘ David Pogue trying a Lockheed Martin flight simulator December 17 at 10 p.m. NOVA: Making Stuff Colder Cold. For centuries we’ve fought it, shunned it and huddled against it. Cold has always been the enemy of life, but now it may hold the key to a new generation of science and technology that will improve our lives. David Pogue explores the frontiers of cold science, from saving the lives of trauma patients and cooling a warming planet to ultracold physics, where bizarre new properties of matter are the norm and the basis of new technologies like levitating trains and quantum computers. December 24 at 8 p.m. Nature: The Himalayas Born during the ice ages, the Himalayas form the highest mountain range in the David Pogue explores bold innovations inspired by the earth’s greatest inventor...” Carved from a hundred million pounds of stone, soaring effortlessly atop a spider web of masonry, Gothic cathedrals are marvels of human achievement and artistry. How did medieval builders create such incredible structures? These architectural marvels were crafted from just hand tools and stone, but they consumed the labor of entire towns and sometimes took a hundred years to build. Tragically, many now teeter on the brink of catastrophic collapse. To save them, an international team of engineers, architects, art historians and computer scientists search the naves, bays and bell towers for clues on how the dream of these heavenly temples on earth came true. December 24 at 10 p.m. NOVA: Great Cathedral Mystery The dome that crowns Florence’s great cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore – the Duomo – is a masterpiece of Renaissance ingenuity and an enduring source of mystery. Still the largest masonry dome on earth after more than six centuries, it is taller than the Statue of Liberty and weighs as much as an average cruise ship. Historians and engineers have long debated how its architect, Filippo Brunelleschi, kept the dome perfectly aligned and symmetrical as the sides rose and converged toward the center, 40 stories above the cathedral floor. At this terrifying height, his laborers toiled without safety nets, applying novel, untried methods on a truly monumental scale. More than four million bricks could collapse at any moment and we still do not understand how Brunelleschi prevented it. To test the latest theories, a team of U.S. bricklayers will help build an experimental “mini-Duomo” using period techniques. DECEMBER 2014 19 The Candy Bomber Tuesday, December 2 at 10 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 F or children living in the rubble of Berlin after World War II, it was candy from heaven. To U.S. Air Force pilot Gail “Hal” Halvorsen, who became known worldwide as the “Candy Bomber,” the Berlin airlift was the healing balm for the wounds of war. The touching story of one man’s efforts to bring joy to the children of a defeated enemy are chronicled through first-hand stories from two Berlin children who are now in their 70s, Halvorsen’s friend and fellow airlift pilot, and from the Candy Bomber himself. In 1948, a Soviet blockade left the two million vanquished citizens of Berlin’s Western zone without food and supplies. To 20 VEGAS PBS S O U RC E save them from starvation, the British, American and French air forces flew 277,569 flights to deliver 2.3 million tons of supplies over 16 months. One day, in a simple gesture of goodwill, Halvorsen gave two sticks of Wrigley’s Doublemint gum to a few German children watching the planes. He then returned with additional candy rations, solicited from other pilots, wrapped in handkerchief parachutes and dropped them from the plane into the hands of the children below. When stories began appearing on TV and radio, donations of candy poured in. All told, 20 tons of Gail “Hal” Halvorsen treats were dropped in handkerchief parachutes. A 60-year old man summed up the true meaning of the gift he had received as a 10year-old. “What was important was not the candy bar, but that somebody in America knew I was in trouble and somebody cared. I can live on thin rations,” he said. “But not without hope. Without hope the soul dies.” Bing Crosby Bing Crosby Rediscovered: American Masters Tuesday, December 2 at 8 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 B ing Crosby was one of the most popular and influential multimedia stars of the first half of the 20th century. For more than three decades, through radio, film, television and records, he reigned supreme. Thirty-seven years after his death, Crosby remains the most recorded performer in history with nearly 400 hit singles, an achievement no one – not Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley or the Beatles – has come close to matching. This new documentary explores the life and legend of the iconic performer, revealing a man far more complex than his public persona. With unprecedented access to the enter- tainer’s personal and professional archives, this special includes neverbefore-seen home movies, Dictabelt recordings, photos and more. The film features new interviews with all surviving members of Crosby’s immediate family – wife Kathryn, daughter Mary and sons Harry and Nathaniel. Crosby’s struggles with his first wife, Dixie Lee, and their sons Gary, Dennis, Phillip and Lindsay are revealed. Mary addresses accusations of abuse first published in Gary’s 1983 memoir, which tarnished their father’s legacy. Gary speaks candidly about both his and his mother’s alcoholism as well as his difficulties with his father in a 1987 interview which had not been broadcasted until now. Other new interviews include singers Tony Bennett and Michael Feinstein, record producer Ken Barnes, biographer Gary Giddins, and writers Buz Kohan and Larry Grossman. Kohan and Grossman share the story behind Crosby’s Christmas special duet with David Bowie. The Doc is as boorish as the hamlet of Portwenn is placid. Season 6 brings a fresh array of dreadful misunderstandings, unintended affronts and regrettable conflicts as the gruff Doc makes his rounds. It also heralds the arrival of Doc’s even more tactless mother, played by the inimitable Claire Bloom. As the season opens, Portwenn is buzzing with arrangements for the wedding of Doc Martin and Louisa. Will they finally tie the knot or will the villagers have to put the confetti back in the box again? Admiral Rickover on the USS Nautilus sive country clubs with the promise of steady, guaranteed returns on their invest- ments. He then set his sights on Europe and Latin America, brokering deals with powerful hedge fund managers and feeder funds from Buenos Aires to Geneva. Billions of dollars were channeled to Madoff’s investment firm and his “feeders” became fabulously wealthy. There were allegations that Madoff was “front-running” or operating a Ponzi scheme which the Securities and Exchange Commission investigated several times over two decades. Madoff remained untouched until December 11, 2008, when he finally admitted it was all “one big lie.” This film unravels the story behind the world’s first truly global Ponzi scheme. This deception that lasted longer, reached wider and cut deeper than any other business scandal in history. Bernie Madoff Rickover: The Birth of Nuclear Power Tuesday, December 9 at 8 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 Combative, provocative and blunt, Admiral Hyman G. Rickover was a flamboyant maverick, a unique American hero. When few thought it possible, then-Captain Rickover harnessed the power of the atom to drive the first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus. Its trip under the polar ice pack was one of the great adventure stories of the 1950s. Later, he oversaw the development of the world's first commercial nuclear power plant. Rickover's achievements made him into a national celebrity. Many questioned Rickover’s goal of an all-nuclear navy and others questioned his creation of a technocratic elite – his own navy within the Navy. However, few contested that he had transformed the Navy and changed the course of America's technological development. Today, questions about nuclear power have once more arisen. Also, many wonder whether America can maintain its technological pre-eminence due to global competition. Vienna Philharmonic Great Performances From Vienna: The New Year’s Celebration 2015 Thursday, January 1 at 8 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 Always one of “our favorite things,” the cherished tradition of ringing in the New Year at the opulent Musikverein with the Vienna Philharmonic continues. This year guest conductor Zubin Mehta leads the Philharmonic. The program includes everyone’s favorite Strauss Family waltzes accompanied by the beautiful dancing of the Vienna State Ballet. Vatican City Antiques Roadshow: Manor House Treasures Monday, December 29 at 8 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 This long-running series is taking inspiration from the furnishings and finery of the sprawling estates in popular period dramas such as Downton Abbey and Upstairs Downstairs for its new special.
