THE HANOVERIAN No 05| May 2012 126th Elite-Auction Horses with talent and potential Sport Desperados wins in Dortmund Annual Meeting Perspectives have been created Auction A jumper received the highest bid on the 126th Elite-Auction: Senza Limiti by Stakkato/Don Juan was sold at 150,000 Euros. Photo: Ernst Horses with talent and potential “We are very satisfied with the outcome of the auction under the present market conditions in the equine sector,” breeding manager Dr. Werner Schade spontaneously summarized the course of the 126th Elite Auction in April. An overall turnover of almost 2 million Euros and an average price of nearly 30,000 Euros for 65 riding horses is certainly a respectable result. By Jürgen Stroscher 2 The Hanoverian 05|2012 Auction T he foreign demand had clearly increased. Sales to the United States appeared to have recovered. An important perspective was created with the sale of the first Hanoverian to China,” auction manager Jörg-Wilhelm Wegener credits the positive market reaction to the sale management of the Hannoveraner Verband. Colorful flags from almost 20 nations demonstrate the great foreign interest in the Hanoverian horse. The international competent audience looked forward to the auction collection and the first hopeful, top quality foals of 2012 in a suspenseful atmosphere in the Niedersachsenhalle. The exhibition ‘Luma –the lion’, a highlight from the successful Gala-evening, prepared all horse enthusiast in a humorous fashion on a long and intense auction before auctioneer Friedrich-Wilhelm Isernhagen was allowed to drop his famous hammer for the first time. A pony owned by Melie Philippot from France was dressed up as a lion and showed off impressive movements in an exhibition of airs above the ground in Verden’s arena. Then the 126th Elite Auction finally started with head number 1 entering the arena: Hofmarschall V by Hotline/D’accord (breeder: Friedrich Lampe, Barver, exhibitor: ZB Voss, Coesfeld). This highly appraised and licensed sire convinced at the Bundeschampionate in 2011 with top scores winning a bronze medal. The new owners from the United States manage a successful dressage barn and will greatly enjoy this exceptional horse. Four-year old Donna Felice by Don Frederico/White Star (breeder: Wolfgang Lohmann, Sandbostel-Mintenburg, exhibitor: Doris Hoffmann, Rhade) surpassed all expectations. The hammer fell at 130,000 Euros for the black-brown state’s premium aspirant. This made her the top-selling dressage horse. The dressage talent that was trained by Stefan Blanken will soon move to her new owner who is a dressage competitor to Austria. in the end. We feel certain though that Senza Limiti fits perfectly in our international jumper barn. He will make his way into the sport!” It was not the first time that the long-standing manager of Buddelei, Bernfried Erdmann, has bought a future competition horse on one of Verden’s auctions. He is partial to the Hanoverian breed and has developed a certain liking for stallions. In 2005 he bought Lord Lohengrin by Lordanos/Diskus, in 2006 it was Codex One by Contendro/Glückspilz and in 2011 it was Premium sire Quinturo by Quaid/Escudo. All three are licensed and in breeding service. He certainly also proved to have made a good selection when buying the mare Georgia by Goldfever/Come On. Patrick Stühlmeyer successfully presents his horses in jumping competitions at the national and international level. Four-year old Stettiner F by Stedinger/De Niro (breeder: Breeding Farm Fries, Northeim, exhibitor: Tanja and Peter Fries, Northeim) was the third auction participant to obtain a six figure sale price. This black half-brother to top producer Fürst Nymphenburg will continue his dressage career in an American dressage barn. The new owner paid 103,000 Euros. Great rideability and three above average basic gaits are an excellent pre-requisite for a successful future in dressage. One must be curious to find out how the now six-year old chestnut stallion Don Ed Hardy continues to develop with such renowned producers like Donnerhall, Weltmeyer and Grenadier in his pedigree. The approved sire sold into a renowned German dressage stable for 70,000 Euros. Donna Felice by Don Frederico/ White Star was the highest priced dressage horse selling to Austria for 130,000 Euros. It became quickly apparent that Auctioneer Isernhagen would have his hands full with this one when the black sire Senza Limiti by Stakkato/Don Juan (breeder: II Chirone de Bruna de Paolis, SanVito/Italy) presented himself in a powerful, dynamic and relaxed fashion in the arena. After a longlasting bidding duel the stallion became the highest priced horse of the day selling for Euro 150,000.00. And once again a horse from the collection of jumpers obtained the highest sale price of the entire auction. “A jumper must be just like him,” the new owner Bernfried Erdmann said with complete persuasion. “I obviously buy with hope in the back of my mind. With a four-year old you just do not know for sure what he will develop into The Hanoverian 05|2012 3 Auction Statistic Riding Horses No. of horses offered for sale 65 horses No. of horses sold 65 horses Total turnover Euro 1.893.000,00 Average price Euro 29.138,46 Highest price Euro 150.000,00 Lowest price Euro 9.000,00 Pricerange Euro 5.000 to 9.999 Euro 10.000 to 14.999 Euro 15.000 to 24.999 Euro 25.000 to 49.999 50.000 Euro and more 1 12 23 23 6 horse horses horses horses horses Horses sold to the following areas Lower Saxony Baden-Württemberg Bavaria Hamburg Hessen Nordrhein-Westfalen Total Germany 14 2 8 2 4 6 36 horses Chile China Denmark Finland France Great Britain Canada Russia Schwitzerland South Africa USA Austria Total abroad 1 4 1 1 4 4 2 3 3 2 4 1 29 horses Foals No. of foals offered for sale 44 foals No. of horses sold 43 foals Total turnover Euro 294.900,00 Average price Euro 6.800,00 Highest price Euro 33.000,00 Lowest price Euro 3.000,00 Not only the high price-segment of horses was of great interest for potential buyers! Horses in lower and medium price ranges offered many possibilities for exhibitors, breeders and riders. The fouryear old grey stallion Candyman by Charilan/ Falkland (breeder: Helmut Klein, Thedinghausen) for instance sold for Euro 25,000.00. This is certainly an investment with a great outlook for the buyers from Bavaria who bought a horse with a great competitive perspective. A jumper rider from Kirchlinteln bought promising five-year old Etienne by Espri/Garibaldi out of the renowned breeding barn of Stefan Aust in Armstorf for 16,000 Euros. The best pre-requisites for the female rider from Lower Saxony for a successful future in jumper competitions! 23 horses sold for prices ranging between Euro 10,000 and 24,999; another 23 horses found new homes in the price range between Euro 25,000 and 49,999. The new owners demonstrated a very quality-oriented purchasing behavior. The number of foreign buyers has increased again. This is very encouraging. 13 nations on four continents are looking forward to the horses of quality from Germany. Four horses sold to tomorrow’s sales market The filly Fifty-Fifty Two by Fidertanz/Friedensfürst sold for 33,000 Euros. China which is certainly noteworthy. The demand was high in France, Great Britain and the United States, too. Four horses found new homes in each of these countries. More than half of the very talented riding horses remain in Germany and will be available for our breeding program or will compete for our country. Especially the riding horses were in high demand. 15 in Lower Saxony and 8 in Bavaria. The youngest hopefuls had to wait untill the very end once again. Traditionally the first foals of the year enter the auction arena last. They are however the audience’s favorite and exhibit their gratitude through playfulness and their zest for life. The collection of 43 foals obtained an average price of Euro 6,853; about the same result as twelve months ago. It took a while for the dark bay filly Fifty-Fifty Two by Fidertanz/Friedensfürst (breeder: Kai Baumgartner, Wulkau) to provoke prospective buyers to start an exciting bidding duel. A facility that raises youngsters in Lower Saxony held the final bid of Euro 33,000. Horse enthusiasts who buy horses for resale always look for suitable young breeding products. The interest in young Hanoverians is also increasing in foreign countries. This year the interest in Finland was especially Auction high. Eight foals found a new home high up in the north! The 126th Elite Auction obtained a result that certainly allows for deriving positive impulses for selling horses with a net return of 1,893,000 Euros for riding horses and 294,900 Euros for foals. The average sale price of nearly 30,000 Euros is certainly a significant increase to last year’s average. An increasing trend in the sale of top horses especially to foreign countries allows for hope for 2012. With a decrease in breedings the quality and rideability of horses become essential. The collection of the Elite Auction clearly demonstrated that the Hanoverian horses have no problem with either! n FRH Don Silvester The “lucky fairy” for the foal FRH Don Silvesterwho was raffled off for the benefit of the club of supporters of Hanoverian Horses was the renowned journalist and Hanoverian breeder Stefan Aust (right). Bernd Hickert moderated the raffle. The Breeder Union Rinne/Hamidi from Rinteln was overjoyed with the beautiful colt by Don Index/Sandro Hit out of the breeding program of Siegfried Pilz, Lilienthal. Senza Limiti Senza Limiti impressed with his style and his seemingly limitless potential long before the auction. Breeder Bruna de Paoliss was convinced about the quality of her black colt to the extent that she asked Fritz Engelke to raise him as a stallion prospect in Kaltenweide. The colt went for training to ‘Obersattelmeister’ Albert Habermann in the summer of 2011 with the goal of a successful participation in the stallion performance test. “Only good things can be said about Senza Limiti. He has a first-class attitude, strong nerves and a super disposition,” said his trainer. The test unfortunately came too early for the black colt. He just missed getting the required scores and was therefore not presented at the licensing. They presented him to the auction pre-selection committee one week after the 70-day test instead. He was invited to Verden to participate in the test-week. His talent was realized; trainer and auction rider Christoph Kühl took him into his training program. Senza Limiti quickly became the favorite of the jumping cadre during the preparation period for the auction. Renowned international jumper riders showed interest. In the end it was Bernfried Erdmann who bought the exceptional talent for his stallion- and competition barn. Senza Limiti entered the auction arena with head number 33. His dam Donna Dinara sold with the same head number here in Verden almost on exactly the same day nine years ago. “Sensitive athlete with great jumping ability” – the auction catalog read. Emanuele Nanni held the last bid then and bought his first broodmare. Many more followed. The entrepreneur who lives near Rome, Italy, had come to Verden with his brother with the intent to buy a horse for his niece who only wanted a Hanoverian. Customer advisor Birgit Schröppel shared her enthusiasm for the mare Donna Dinara with the horseman from Italy and it was catching. “She was incredibly typy; a dream of a mare,” she remembers. A son of Graf Grannus/Bold Indian xx was bought for the niece. Emanuele Nanni’s wife Bruna de Paolis also discovered her passion for breeding noble four-legged creatures. The herd of broodmares that carry the colophon ‘II Chirone’ in their names has increased to more than ten; her owner is the president of the Hanoverian Horse Breeding Club Italy. The pedigrees are filled with excellent jumper blood. A full sister to Olympic and world champion Salinero is also a member of the broodmare herd. None of them have however seen the land where lemons flourish. Bruna de Paolis trusts the proven care Martin Klintworth provides in Ohrensen. And that is where all her mares live. After the auction the training of Donna Dinara continued in the stable of Hilmar Meyer, Morsum. In addition to placements in jumper horse classes the grey mare impressed in the free-jumping chute receiving the dream score of 10,0 in the mare test. Donna Dinara was bred to foundation sire Stakkato. This combination has been repeated four times to today. The first foal was the only filly. Siria sold to Italy where she has already successfully competed on the international Youngster-Tour. The breeders are hoping for a long wished-for filly this year, too. Seven successful descendants with placements and victories in jumper classes at A- to S-level have contributed to the successful acceptance of Donna Dinara’s dam Wiener Lady into the Program for Hanoverian Jumper Horse Breeding. She is out of the line of Algave that became famous through Alsterröschen by Agram. You find Alsterröschen in Senza Limiti’s pedigree in the fifth generation and she excellently embodies the classical Dannenberg virtues. Her licensed son Don Rudolpho remains unforgettable. The successful dressage stallion was bred by Herbert Schütt from Hemmoor. The Sprehe Stud purchased the black youngster at the Stallion sales, and meanwhile, he counts among the best young german dressage horses under Kristina Sprehe with a fantastic future career for both of them being certainly no coincidence. Besides, Desperados will participate at future horse shows with the name supplement “FRH”, the abbreviation for the Hanoverian Supporters Club. Desperados left the Stallion Licensing in Verden without being accepted for breeding, but he was nevertheless sold at a top price of Euro 104,000. A unique career in breeding and sports started. In 2004, further matured and developed under the rider, the impressive Desperados was not only licensed, but also honoured as Premium stallion. From that point on, his career was simply exemplary. He won the bronze medal at the Bundeschampionate for riding horses at the age of three and four. Further advanced by Falk Rosenbauer, first international placements at the age of only seven followed. In 2011, Kristina Sprehe sat down in his saddle. Meanwhile, the privately owned stallion has been successful in dressage tests up to international Grand Prix-level, and in 2011, he was honoured with the Otto-Lörke-Prize for the best german Grand Prix futurity prospect. Desperados’ own accomplishments are amazing, and his breeding balance is as impressive. Desperados presented the winning mares of the Herwart von der Decken-Show two times in a row: Doris Day and Delany in 2010 and 2011. Doris Day even topped the success of her sire at the Bundeschampionate when she won the title in 2010. A dressage breed value for dressage of 130 points underlines his breeding qualities. Five of his sons are already licensed for Hanover, among them the Premium stallions Destano and Divine Etincelle. Desperados is on his way to the top in breeding and sports. Since 2009, the Grande-Prize has been awarded to Hanoverian stallions in the important age of ten to twelve, a time when first reliable information about his hereditary qualities will be available as the eldest offspring of a stallion can then be judged under saddle. The breeder of the stallion is honoured with this prize. The naming is meant to honour the hereditary accomplishments of the trademark stallion Grande. n Denmark New Zealand Champion Jumper Stallion Clifton Ask Bates Antonello „Horse of the Year“ The Danish Warmblood Association approved its stallions in Herning. Clifton Ask by Clintord/Singular Joter (breeder: Marie-Luise and Anja Borstelmann, Salzhausen) convinced the approval committee and became Champion Jumper Stallion. The typy black stallion left Verden’s approval arena for Denmark as a premium sire – jumping last year. The renowned breeding stud Blue Hors had discovered the talent on the stallion market. Clifton Ask stands at stud at Stutteri Ask. De L’Or by Dancier/ Rotspon (breeder: Hinrich Wülpern, Farven) received the green light for Denmark in the dressage division. The powerfully moving chestnut was not only a premium sire last year; he was also the highest priced two-and-a-half-year old in Verden. A son of United/Worldly (breeder: Helmut G. Heidmeyer, Rahden) was also approved. Fletcher by Fürst Grandios/Weltmeyer (breeder: Karl Lehing, Wagenfeld) who had been bought by the breeding farm Blue Hors on the stallion sales in 2011 was too. n The “Horse of the Year-Show” took place in Hastings/New Zealand in the middle of March. New Zealand’s best sporthorses are highlighted and receive awards at this event. It concludes the horse show season. The title was awarded to Kelly Van Dyk and Wohlkahn by Werther/Calypso (breeder: Günter Brandes, Peine), a former stallion market participant in the division for young riders. Bates Antonello by Anamour/Winnebago became Dressage Horse of the Year. Bates Antonello’s was bred in New Zealand. His performances in the dressage ring with rider Louisa Hill are the standard by which dressage is measured. Fabarchie by Eklat/ Graf Douglas became Reserve Champion. Nickey Pope presented this New Zealand-bred horse in Grand Prix and in the Special. The event horses participated in international competitions. A ceremonial opening took place after the the annual meeting. The Big Band of Verden’s Dom-High School welcomed the guest with a musical performance while Dr. Werner Schade together with President Manfred Schäfer and Representatives of the Masterrind GmbH (cattle marketing and breeding organization) showed the completely remodeled facility to the honorary guest Minister Gert Lindemann from the government department for agriculture in Lower Saxony. The politician was clearly impressed and emphasized in his address, “The result is truly worth showing off. This facility is to help our breeders generate additional income. It is to strengthen the economy of the entire region.” He describes the future with confidence, “May the people that work in this facility have good ideas, energy and an aptitude for negotiating. May the success of this work confirm the hopes the associations and its members have placed in this modern auction facility!” During the ceremony it became apparent how much combined engagement all participants had brought up to support and advance the remodeling project of the Niedersachsenhalle. The whole of Germany will envy us for what we have created.” Lutz Brockmann who is the Mayor of the city of Verden said proudly, “Competences become visible with this new facility.” District Magistrate Peter Bohlmann added, “The arena has given itself a present for its 40th anniversary with these renovations.” Manfred Schäfer said the final words, “In accordance with the example and the tradition of those who originally were responsible for building the Niedersachsenhalle we have now in today’s time taken a decisive step to secure our future and our competitiveness. The Niedersachsenhalle is the entrance to the world for the Hanoverian breed and its horses. We offer a perspective to the younger generation of breeders.” A colorful program rounded off the ceremony where meat bulls, milk cows, calves, mares and foals participated and auction horses were presented. Silke Korthals from the ‘Kreissparkasse Verden’, a local credit union, presented a new jump. Two horses christened the jump right away. The presentation of the two most expensive horses in the history of Verden’s auctions was the final highlight of the exhibition: Lemony’s Nicket with Susan Pape and Londontime with Wolfhard Witte. n Representatives of the Elite and the May Auction did each other credit on the catwalk with beautiful performances. The Hanoverian 05|2012 9 Annual meeting Perspectives have been created! The remodeling of the Niedersachsenhalle, the developing of efficient processing strategies as well as new marketing strategies – these were just a few of the important subjects at the annual meeting of the Hannoveraner Verband in March. It became apparent that new challenges had been identified and the resulting measures had been optimally installed. By Julia MartinThe forum is part of the new complex of the Niedersachsenhalle. It served as the stage for this meeting. “The new addition has already proven itself,” Dr. Werner Schade commented. Photo: Züngel T he Hannoveraner Verband is ambitious on many levels - especially with respect to timing. The annual meeting with 120 delegates and guests started at 3:00 PM - the official ceremonial opening of the Niedersachsenhalle was scheduled for 6:00 PM. It took exact planning to carry out this tight schedule. And that it did: the meeting was adjourned at exactly 5:55 PM. A main issue in the annual report of breeding manager Dr. Werner Schade was the completion of the remodeling project of the Niedersachsenhalle. The timetable was ambitiously tight here, too. The 10 The Hanoverian 05|2012 project started in April 2010. An ultra-modern marketing centre was created within two building phases of 5 months each - completion in spring 2012. Every visitor entering the Niedersachsenhalle today realizes that the challenges were mastered! The arena is modern, light and friendly. Through additions like the forum and the restaurant setting events now run smoothly. Even if the guests spend time outside of the arena they are still integrated in the event. The new barns fit well into the existing architecture. Larger and lighter stalls have greatly improved the conditions for the horses. The new warm-up arena makes an opti- Annual meeting mum connector between the former warm-up arena and the stables. Through these remodeling measures, the German Hannoveraner Verband is now equipped with a one-of-a-kind training and marketing facility. “We are most grateful to the city of Verden, the district and the state of Lower Saxony. Without financial support the realization of this building project would not have been in the realm of possibilities,” Dr. Werner Schade summarizes. The financing of the project was an estimated expenditure of 9 Million Euros for a long time. Towards the end of 2011 an increase became apparent. The actual expenditure seems to now be at 10,84 Million Euros. Three components are the reasons for the additional cost: Unexpected and unforeseeable expenses included next to many small details also massive drainage issues that had to be solved. Furthermore additional far-reaching decisions were made during the remodeling process that were costly. We invested in a complete new feeding installation that supplies feed to all barns on the right and left hand side of Lindhooper Street. “There are things that you realize during the construction period. We have taken the proper measures to guarantee a strong performance-able facility on a long-term basis,” the manager reaffirmed. The third component for the increased costs is the general cost increase itself. The prices have increased by 15 percent in some areas. This was a development that exceeded the calculated price increase rate by far. We were unable to fix the cost at the onset of construction because of EU regulations. All building measures had to be written out in the current year. Under these circumstances the Hannoveraner Verband once again took a firm stand with respect to the new knowledge on the expense situation and found a solution. Dr. Schade was very clear in his wording, “There will not be a breeders’ apportionment of costs.” The necessary refinancing occurs through a loan from the ‘Kreissparkasse’ Verden that the Niedersachsenhallen GmbH claims and not the Hannoveraner Verband. The liquidity of the association and its freedom of action remain secured. “These measures are without a question correct,” Dr. Werner Schade emphasized, “The old Niedersachsenhalle was no longer acceptable. You have to get prepared properly when times are difficult. After all it is our responsibility to create perspectives for our breeders. Now we can look into the future and utilize our opportunities!” Optimal use These opportunities can however only be realized if we react to the structural change within our breeders’ base and in the conduct of buyers. “Our membership numbers are retrograde yet the cost for attending to the needs of buyers and breeders is increasing because the competition in the area of marketing has grown,” Dr. Werner Schade summarized. The balance between salaries, personnel development and efficiency has to be restored once again. He uses training as an example for a newly organized procedure, “Training is a key func- Fritz von der Decken-Preis For the second time Heinrich Ramsbrock, Menslage, has been awarded the Fritz von der Decken-Prize for being most successful in raising stallion prospects. 25 licensed stallions come from his farm; he bred seven of them. 18 of these stallions sold very successfully on the stallion sales. The prize was an oil painting of the sire Christ by Competent/Picard, a stallion, whose potential Heinrich Ramsbrock detected at a very early stage. He purchased the young colt from his breeder Gerhard Wehrs in Lehrte and presented him at Verden’s licensing in 2007. The black-brown colt became reserve champion of the dressage stallions and sold on the stallion sales to the breeding farm Sprehe for 125,000 Euros. The stallion qualified for the Bundeschampionate in Warendorf with his rider Heiko Klausing in 2010. Christ already has 612 offspring including nine licensed stallions. Manfred Schäfer presented the Fritz von der Decken-Prize to Heinrich Ramsbrock, for being the most successful rearer of stallions. The Hanoverian 05|2012 11 Annual Meeting ding factor. Breed values are tools.” The breeding book committee set new selection limits for the stallion performance test and for the predisposition test, both defined in by-law changes. These adjusted selection limits for four-year old Hanoverian stallions (SPT-breed value 120 points or an average of 100 points) take numerous stallions that are strongly specialized in their discipline into account. Furthermore youngsters that started their performance career a little later at a more mature stage are able to receive a breeding permit if they qualify for the Bundeschampionate (90 points SPTbreed value on average plus the qualification for the Bundeschampionate). The new stable with the just recently completed paddocks. tion for marketing and for binding customers in the equestrian sport.” Both training and sale take place under one roof at the Hannoveraner Verband. The goals are clearly defined: Support for breeders, strengthening the binding of customers, discovery and development of auction horses and acquirement of new clients. “We have introduced training blocks and focus on training our customers – in Germany and all around the world.” Jörg Jacobs is responsible for the development of concepts and for the realization of the training programs. Auction manager Jörg-Wilhelm Wegener is responsible for the entire coordination. Processes intertwine and will link together even closer. The new foal selection system is another example for measures that overlap in different departments. Here the departments marebook and AAZ work together even more closely. The entire area of marketing and communication have been improved and enlarged in public relations; the breeding and sale department cooperate more closely in foreign care. “We select more rigorously than others do.” Last year’s main breed focus was the reform of the stallion performance test. Once again Dr. Werner Schade clearly expressed his view, “We have decided for a selection according to breed values. The results and analyses support our decision. We select more rigorously than others do but we also have different demands. After all we are in competition and we want breed progress.” He considers the discussion on the pedigree breed value to be exaggerated, “The quality of the horse is the deci- 12 The Hanoverian 05|2012 Marketing Strategies Internationally successful competition horses that create a sensation on show grounds worldwide are an excellent advertisement for the Hanoverian breed and with that they market our products. It is the responsibility of the Hannoveraner Verband and of the FRH to accompany top talents. The cooperation with riders and trainers takes top priority. Some promotional and investment projects were launched in 2011. The Hannoveraner Verband is also unique and different to every other breed association. We attend to all equine markets in Verden: dressage, jumping, eventing and recreational riding. “The integration of recreational horses into our auction program has been a total success,” Dr. Werner Schade sums up. “We have taken this change very seriously as we are developing new target groups.” The association is also trying to attract new clients through e-motion-pferd TOUR that is a project that has been initiated in cooperation with the insurance company ‘Uelzener Versicherungen’. “Personal connections are essential in the horse business. When we visit these facilities we meet horse enthusiasts we would not have a point of contact with under regular circumstances. These contacts are very valuable.” The Hannoveraner Verband works with the same intensity on developing new markets in foreign countries. Asia has top priority. In China the training of riders has already started. The association is exploring new territories and will offer - in addition to the auction program - other marketing possibilities to its breeders in the near future. “The foal market suffers because of the declining demand,” the breeding manager explained. We see it as our responsibility to support those breeders who depend on selling foals and offer new impulses.” Measures are initiated: The Hannoveraner Verband will support the foal auctions in Luhmüh- Annual Meeting len, Timmel and Langenau through public relations. Furthermore we will offer a web-page where foals can be exhibited with videos, photos, pedigrees and descriptions. The annual report finished on an emotional note. After the presentation of the new image film on the Hannoveraner Verband that was well received and can now be viewed on the internet Dr. Werner Schade asked a special honorary guests to come forward: auction rider Melanie Wienand. “We were all filled with fear and sorrow when the accident happened,” Dr. Werner Schade said. “Our thoughts were with you the entire time. You fought. The doctors did not even anticipate that such a speedy positive recovery process would be possible. You are on the right track and we wish you only the very best!” n Other Highlights of the Meeting Engaged Young Breeders The association’s youth representative Maren Schlender reported about the Hanoverian Young Breeder year 2011. The total number of participants in Young Breeder competitions decreased slightly in 2011 and is now back to the level of previous years. This moderate decrease has several reasons: a few competitions were combined and the competition of the breeding club Braunschweig was canceled. Lüneburg remains the strongest breeding club with 202 participants. The competition on the national level was once again successful. The Hanoverian Team won the bronze medal at the 15th Federal Young Breeder Competition in Futterkamp, Schleswig-Holstein. Assi Blume and Henrike Gehrdau-Schröder won the German championship title for their knowledge. This year the young breeders participate in the e-motion-pferd TOUR 2012. The program is individually designed for each facility and includes the work of the young breeders. Acceptable result Gerhard Wiechers who is deputy managing director and manager of the finance department presented the financial report 2011 to the meeting of the delegates and announced a financial loss of 159,685.03 Euros. In summery he commented on the profit and loss statement, “The income from membership dues and other fees is decreasing. Income out of the sale’s sector always fluctuates. I consider an increase to only be a contingent possibility. Maintaining the current level requires the employment of measures. 2011, as 2010 was too, has been a special year for the Hannoveraner Verband,” Gerhard Wiechers granted. The building project influenced the daily business considerably. In addition to creating difficult working conditions for the entire team, financial expenditures were unavoidable to guarantee acceptable auction and training conditions. In the end the finance manager summarized, “Under these circumstances the year-end result is acceptable. It is our responsibility as an association to make use of existing means for the benefit of our members. An unsatisfied situ- ation on many breeding farms demands an increase in guidance and help from the association on every level. Several promoters Dr. Werner Schade had emphasized in his annual report how important it is to promote young talents in competition and to cooperate with top riders and renowned training facilities. Manfred Schaefer illustrated concrete results in his report on the FRH: Warum Nicht FRH with rider Isabell Werth is one of the most prominent promoters. Rassolini FRH has carried the hallmark of quality since 2011. The cooperation with Family Balkenhol was intensified in 2010. Anabel and Klaus Balkenhol bought Donna Antonia by Don Frederico on the summer auction on recommendation of the FRH. The mare is getting prepared for upper level-dressage competitions at the stable of Balkenhol. Satisfaction FRH placed first with his rider Marco Kutscher at the Worldcup-Jumping in Gothenburg 2011. Gotha FRH is another much respected leading figure in top competition. Status FRH with Eva Bitter and FRH Quaid with Johannes Ehning are just about ready to enter international top competitions. The FRH-density is considerable in eventing: FRH Butts Abraxxas and Ingrid Klimke, FRH Fantasia and FRH Butts Avedon with Andreas Dibowski and German champion FRH Schorsch with Julia Mestern. The youngest contestant in the FRH-family is FRH Escada JS who has just recently moved the barn of Olympic champion Ingrid Klimke. The team Olympic champion knows all too well though what is important in Grand Prix-horses. By Britta Züngel F eatures and attributes in a Grand Prix-horse – how and when can we recognize a pre-disposition? The members of the Association of Hanoverian Private Stallion Owners want to have an exact answer to this question and invited Hubertus Schmidt to their membership meeting in March. The successful dressage rider and trainer accepted this invitation only hesitantly but then answered all the questions and delivered an interesting insight in the world of Grand Prix dressage. He actually descends from an old Westphalian breeder family. His father bred several internationally successful jumper and dressage horses. Hubertus Schmidt celebrated his greatest triumphs with the unforgettable Wansuela suerte by Warkant/Wachmann out of the breeding program of Conrad Hogrefe, Eickeloh. He became Team Olympic Champion in Athens and Team World Champion in Aachen with the mare. He celebrated his biggest individual title in 2005; he became Reserve European Champion in Hagen in addition to winning team gold. Features and attributes of a Grand Prix-horse - how and when can we recognize a predisposition? Hubertus Schmidt, “It is difficult to determine if a three year old horse will become a Grand Prixhorse or not. I personally have not been able to see that in horses at that age. I can feel the suitability when they are five or six years old. 100 percent of the horses where I felt the suitability actually became Grand Prix horses. Hubertus Schmidt, “Grand Prix-horses must have fighting spirit!” 14 The Hanoverian 05|2012 Three good gaits are obviously important for a Grand Prix-horse. Nobody is perfect though. I am not willing to compromise with respect to the trot work. It is the prerequisite for piaffe and passage. The horse must swing through the entire body in the trot. I allow for compromises in the canter and to a little degree in the walk. You will loose valuable points in the Grand Prix if the walk is too bad. It is decisive that a five-year old can carry in the canter and that swing in the trot work. The rider must make the horse swing before he/she can introduce collection. The next question is if the horse reacts sensibly and quickly on the aids or not. It must always be our goal to build up positive tension in a horse. It is sufficient if you can collect a horse for just a few steps out of forward movement. The character of a horse carries at least fifty percent. A horse must be sensitive enough and have a certain fighting spirit. There are worlds between Slevel dressage- and Grand Prix-horses. All too often S-dressage horses do not have enough guts to make it all the way to Grand Prix.” Are there recurring conformation attributes in dressage horses with an excellent predisposition? Hubertus Schmidt, “There are great exterior differences in horses. One is too long and the other too straight in the back. I always watch how the horse deals with its conformation. I have no room for compromises when it comes to the poll and the connection of the neck to the shoulder. The poll must not be too light or too tight. Is the hose thick at the throat or it is hard to get on the bit? This condition will remain a problem all through the horses training like a red thread. It astounds me again and again how horses with major conformation flaws can be successful. It is always of utmost importance that the movement swings through the body. The conformation of top competitors like Rusty, Gigolo or Bonfire does not meet the ideal. Desperados on the other hand is pretty close to ideal and he presents himself accordingly. His type and his moving ability are what I am looking for in a dressage horse. Rusty’s movement was in a class by itself. The Grand Prix of Parzival and Adelinde Cornelissen at the European Championships in Windsor was the best I have ever seen. The dynamic absolute relaxation was impressive. From his conformation alone Parzival is not really a horse predestined for Grand-Prix dressage! Are there special demands on the interior? Sport Hubertus Schmidt, “Horses must have great sensitivity and a certain desire to go - they must want to cooperate. Wansuela suerte for instance was very sensitive - recreational riders would have failed. I personally would have been even more successful with her if she had not been so hypersensitive and irritated. She was relaxed but would not stand for the salute. We lost many points because of it. I can very well imagine a horse like Desperados on championships. He has what it takes, yet he is quiet and relaxed.” How should the moving mechanics be developed? Hubertus Schmidt, “The moving mechanics are not most important; the willingness and ability to collect are. Many young horses push forward in the trot and have difficulties to transfer and carry weight on their hindquarters. This is necessary for the collection later on. Being able to build up a certain amount of tension in a horse is important to me. The horses must be comfortable which is a result of elastic and supple movement. The back of a horse might swing and still be tight. The rider can feel it because the horse is uncomfortable to sit. This is a sign that the horse does not move correctly. It is hard for a breeder to evaluate how much ‘go’ a horse needs. In general Grand Prix-horses are difficult to ride. Accepting the specialties of the individual horse is an art for a rider. There are horses that require industrious movement so they can work and swing through the body. Others have slower movement. They have to be ridden at a slower pace to avoid that they start to flip their toes. It takes a good rider to feel out what a horse needs. Often we have to make compromises. The rider must realize when his horse is happy.” At what age is Grand Prix-suitability predictable? Hubertus Schmidt, “Grand Prix suitability is predictable at the age of four to five when the ability and willingness for collection can be recognized. The federal championships are an excellent avenue for young horses. I would however not go to Warendorf if looking for a Grand Prix-horse. Wansuela suerte would not have obediently completed her dressage horse test in the ring in Warendorf as a five year old. There is a great difference between a horse that obediently completes a dressage test and the sensitive horses that we need for international competitions. I believe however that the horses are asked to do the proper exercises in Warendorf. The tests ask for shoulder-ins and half-passes. Many sensitive horses however would not be able to handle the situation in Warendorf.” What does the development of the Grand Prix-sport demand of the breeders? Hubertus Schmidt, “The breeders are on the right path. The horses are becoming better and better. I am convinced that the riding has improved as well over the years. One realizes that many riders ride technically better today when looking at photos of the old masters at the time of Otto Loercke. Overall the horses make it easier for the riders today. From a technical viewpoint people ride cleanerand more correct applying gymnastic exercises to have a more supple horse. Horses have to get into the right hands. What however does that mean, “the right hands”? There are plenty of horses that perform at M- and S-level that have the potential for Grand Prix.” Hubertus Schmidt was invited by the Hanoverian stallion owners. Photos: Züngel How do you approach young horses? How do you judge the use of jumper blood when breeding dressage horses? Hubertus Schmidt, “My father bred a lot with jumper bloodlines. It was his fortune that the sire Pilot stood at stud in our neighborhood. My success horse Forest Gump NRW by Florestan who should have stepped into Wansuela suerte’s footsteps but unfortunately passed away early was out of the mare Parodie by Pilot/Remus II. She produced eleven FN registered sport horses including four horses with Grand Prix- and St. Georges-successes as well as a jumper for S-level courses. Her dam Rubia was a similarly strong producing mare herself. She delivered 2 S-level jumpers and one S-level dressage horse.” Hubertus Schmidt, “Pedigrees mean nothing to me. Good basic gaits are a prerequisite for threeyear olds. We can teach horses a lot but not everything! A lot comes with the horse. Often training is a question of submissiveness. I am always impartial towards a young horse. I do not care about color or sex. I did not want to ride stallions in times gone by. I have however revised my opinion. The stallions I have ridden over the past few years all have been a joy to ride. I take my horses to the shows for the first time when they know the Prix St. Georges-movements. Before that they gain experience in dressage horse classes with my apprentice riders. n The Hanoverian 05|2012 15 Breeder‘s portrait Sport Horses with potential The equine veterinarian Christian Schröer has bred Hanoverian horses in Siedenburg near Nienburg for more than 20 years,; he believes wholeheartedly in the performance blood of his broodmares. By Jürgen Stroscher D r. Christian Schröer mostly uses the foundation sires Servus and Diskus and the producer Alabaster. Before it all began the now 63-year old studied elaborately for a variety of professions. Born in Osnabrueck he successfully completed an agricultural apprenticeship of two years followed by studying agricultural science at a college in his hometown. His great interest in breeding horses became apparent quickly. He wrote his dissertation on the breed value estimation and its management. He had to thank his grandfather for the famous horse virus that infected him! He started riding as a little boy and grew up with rural riding. It therefore comes to no surprise that Christian Schröer is partial to eventing and jumping. Christian Schröer rode competitively as a devoted jumper competitor until the middle of the 90s. Christian Schröer trains his horses with his trainer Philip Lingnau before marketing them as three- to six-year olds. 16 The Hanoverian 05|2012 Because of his special liking for horses he also wanted to work with his four-legged friends on a professional basis. Riding was supposed to remain his hobby though. So he focused on becoming a veterinarian. He studied at the Veterinary School in Hannover. He met his wife Anneliese during a practical work period in Wilhelmshaven in 1980. He settled down in Siedenburg near Nienburg in Lower Saxony where he joined an existing practice as an assistant veterinarian. He expanded the practice into the equine clinic that has an agricultural part and a breeding operation today all because of his engagement in and love for horses. As a veterinarian Christian Schröer quickly made contact with the former breeding station in Sulingen. Through this connection he could not only intensify his own breeding ambitions but he could also specialize in his veterinary services on gynecology and birthing assistance. Today he manages his own in- Dr. Christian Schröer from Siedenburg. Fotos: Stroscher semination station and offers frozen semen from several stallions. Fertility management is another one of his specialties. As a breeder-friendly offer he makes three stallions available for natural cover. Grandfather’s experiences “It has always been my wish to breed sport horses with performance potential. I also wanted to be successful with my mare base. My grandfather’s experience had already proven that the share of what a mare passes on to her offspring is much higher than the stallion’s share. Being a jumper rider I wanted to breed jumpers,” the veterinarian reviews the past. The success story of Hanoverian breeder Christian Schröer began when the threeyear old black mare Dolle Deern by Diskus/Weltmeister (breeder: Werner Dierssen, Wagenfeld) entered the barn in Siedenburg in 1990. A fortunate coincidence allowed four-year old bay Serenade by Servus/Gralsritter (breeder: Gerhard Schmerglatt, Gnarrenburg) to join the broodmare band in Siedenburg. “The Hanoverian jumper sires Diskus and Servus were so convincing at the time that I went looking for mares with these bloodlines. I was fortunate enough to find them,” the veterinarian is still excited today. And he was right. Christian Schröer has a band of broodmares with consolidated pedigrees because of these two mares. The mares were very fertile, too. “They were in foal almost every year and produced numerous state’s premium mares and competition horses up to the S-level,” Christian Schröer proudly tells about the development of his Hanoverian breeding program. He decided to integrate a dressage line into his breeding pro- Breeder‘s portrait gram because of marketing reasons. He turned his decision into reality with five-year old Ester by Eldorado/Lakai (breeder: Carla Beyer, Bassum) at the beginning of the 90s. As producer he first used dressage sire Alabaster by Akzent II/Wendepunkt. Rudolf Zeilinger and Johannes Westendarp successfully competed Alabaster at that time. “A top exterior and beauty alone do not guarantee that a horse can jump a fence. Performance needs to take center stage when breeding,” so the Hanoverian breeder. Therefore I carefully inspect my foals after one week; I make them canter and if possible make them jump wide. You can see a lot in a foal at that time.” Many of his mares are state’s premium mares with notable scores between nine and ten. Foals and young horses grow up under the best conditions on the breeding farm in Siedenburg. “I check the development of the foals’ bodies and minds daily. Because of this and because I put harmonious groups together I create the best conditions for the start of a young horse life.” All fields and paddocks are fenced with horse-friendly flexible vinyl enclosure. Young horses are broken to saddle and trained as well. “I sell them when they are between three- and six-years of age. Horses sell easier when under saddle,” Christian Schröer explains his marketing strategy. The breeder has made a name for himself and not only within his area because of his good customer care. “We have sold many horses to the United States and Canada where they now compete successfully. Satisfied customers will bring new business. Mouth-tomouth propaganda is a good marketing tool.” Christian Schröer’s breeding program has produced successful competitors like the gelding San Pedro S by Don Carlos that Shroeer sold lucratively on Verden’s elite auction to the United States, Centrio S by Cheenook a successful jumper competitor at the S-level and Countdown S who is a fullbrother to Centrio S who Renee Tebbel and Jens Dummeyer have successfully competed. sires are an excellent breeding choice for Hanoverian mares.” Own stallion at stud Dr. Schröer has excellent experiences from breeding to the grey Holstein sire Calido. He used the Holstein producer in combination with the bloodlines of Diskus and Servus. Three Calido-daughters out of Dolle Deern are still in his breeding program. Seven-year old Celebration S and nine-year old Calinichta S are expecting foals by Contendro while 17-year old Gimba has already delivered a filly by Van Helsing. It seems that especially St. Pr. mare Calinichta S passes the performance ability of Holstein jumpers on to her offspring. She delivered a colt by Cassini II called Captain Morgan in 2007 that was licensed in Verden in 2010. Christian Schröer has had the opportunity to use a sire out of his own breeding program for the first time. Even though the bay was sold to the breeding farm Famos in Syke-Wachendorf Dr. Schröer as a veterinarian has close business relations with the neighboring farm. An agreement was made that allows Dr. Schröer to use Calido’s son Charilan for natural cover. Christian Schröer has consistently expanded his broodmare herd which is contrary to the declining number of breedings. Currently he uses 18 mares in his breeding program. “In accordance with the motto that good horses are hard to find and they are in demand I believe in quantity with quality. As a veterinarian I try to develop breeder-friendly offers. In general rideability becomes more and more important however the horses have to have the proper potential,” so Christian Schröer. The father of three children aged between 19 and 28 keeps an optimistic outlook into the future of his Hanoverian breeding program with this claim. n Christian and Anneliese Schröer with broodmare Sanrica and her colt by Van Helsing. The 15-year old daughter Noblesse by Niclas xx is still a member of the current broodmare band. She is expecting a foal by Van Helsing. “I much welcome the Hanoverian Jumper Horse Program. A separation in dressage and jumping was compelling to allow for the jumper lines to become more consolidated and more attractive again. I have been a lot more active again on mare shows and have participate with many of my horses since its introduction,” Schröer supports the program of the Hannoveraner Verband. He looks favorably upon opening up to other breed associations. “Holstein The Hanoverian05|2012 17 Hannoveraner Verband The AAZ (v.l.n.r.): Jörg-Wilhelm Wegener, Peter Kind, Jeanine Pagel, Meike Oetker, Malte Kanz and Hartmut Kettelhodt. The auction participants range in ability from a horse for a top competitor to a horse for a recreational rider. There is a horse for every rider. Many customers look for dual-talented horses. The selection committee considers this aspect in particular when putting the collection for interim auctions together. Verden’s auction program has a great advantage as many different horses are available for daily tryouts in one location. The customer does not have to travel from one farm to another to find a suitable partner. The horse has to undergo a veterinarian examination and meet the required standard before the final acceptance. Radiographs are available for viewing at the office of veterinarian Dr. Gerd Brunken. All around service All employees of the AAZ used to be active riders or still mount a horse every evening. They offer a great amount of experience and information having experienced so many auctions and being so enthusiastic about the sport of riding and breeding of horses. Interested customers can confidently contact the office with their needs. They will always find open ears for all their requests. The staff gladly helps with tickets and catalogs. The organization of events is the main responsibility of the auction office. Hartmut Kettelhodt has worked for the Hannoveraner Verband since 1976. He is the stable manager, trainer and the right hand of auction manager Jörg-Wilhelm Wegener. He travels the countryside to select horses and/or manages everything around the stables from training to feeding when no auctions take place. One of Malte Kanz’ responsibilities is to put together auction brochures that hold important data for the first impressions. Many horses can also be viewed on the Internet on videos to make the preliminary selection easier. Hartmut Kettelhodt, Jeanine Pagel (dressage) and Thomas Schönig are Hannoveraner Verband readily available at all times to answer questions and offer advice. Preparing time schedules for training and tryouts are part of Jeanine Pagel’s responsibilities. Meike Oetker and Peter Kind are contact persons for buyers and sellers. The employees work together. “There are no closed doors. In general we know what the other one does. If one of us is unavailable the other one answers the phone and takes over in attending to the needs and requests of our breeders,” Malte Kanz emphasizes. The breeders might try to find out how to best prepare horses for an auction or where to present them. There are selection sites for the various auctions all over the breeding area. Verden always is the final site. A cradle for top competitors I found out that the promising stallion and federal champion Callaho’s Benicio was sold on Verden’s stallion sales in 2007. Many horses went from being an auction participant to becoming a successful international competitor. For instance the stallion Codex One who won the Grand Prix of Frankfurt with his rider Christian Ahlmann. Dressage stars like Satchmo with Isabell Werth and Elvis VA with Nadine Capellmann came from Verden and became team Olympic champions in Hong Kong in 2008. Lemony’s Nicket comes to mind in respect to a Federal Champion. He sold on the 125th elite auction. “It was a very special event; the stallion wrote history in Verden. It is obviously not very common to have a horse of such caliber in the collection,” auction manager Jörg-Wilhelm Wegener remembers. “There are such unique horses and yes you will find them in Verden.” Every horse has his own rider-groom team that accompanies the horse with great passion up to the auction. In respect to Lemony’s Nicket it was Melanie Wienand who carefully trained him up to the auction. We do not just prepare and train auction participants. We also offer an extensive training program for ambitious riders as well as for horses. Jörg Jacobs is responsible for the entire training program of the AAZ.
