FOLLOW THESEUS STEPS TO THE ISLAND OF CRETE
“…King
“…King Minos of Crete had waged war on Athens and won. He
then demanded that seven Athenian youths and seven
maidens be sent every ninth year (some accounts say every
year) to be devoured by the Minotaur. When the third sacrifice
came round, Theseus volunteered to go to slay the monster. He
promised to his father, Aegeus, that he would put up a white
sail on his journey back home if he was successful. Ariadne,
Minos' daughter, fell in love with Theseus and helped him get
out of the maze by giving him a ball of thread, allowing him to
retrace his path. Theseus slew the minotaur with his sword and
led the other Athenians back out the labyrinth. Theseus took
Ariadne with him but on the return trip abandoned her on the
island of Naxos. Ariadne cursed him when she noticed he had
abandoned her. This curse meant that Theseus forgot to fly
white sails on his return journey, thus causing his father
(Aegeus) to throw himself into the Aegan Sea, which is named
after him.
This myth has continually been rere-presented and rere-used by
European culture, over a period of three thousand years...”

Geography of Crete
•
Crete is one of the 13 regions of Greece and at the same time the southern most
district of the European Community
•
It is the biggest island in Greece and the second biggest (after Cyprus) of the East
Mediterranean.
•
It lies at the Southern Aegean Sea and at the crossroads of three continents Europe,
Asia and Africa.
•
Crete covers an area of 8.336 sq.kms. The length of the island is 260 km, but its
coastline is 1.046 km.
•
The biggest width is 60 km from the Dion cape to the Lithinon cape, while the
smallest is 12 km and is called "isthmus of Ierapetra".
•
A high mountain range crosses the island from West to East, formed by three
different groups of mountains. To the West the White Mountains (2.452 m), in the
middle the mountain of Idi (Psiloritis-2.456 m) and to the East the mountain of Dikti
(2.148 m).
•
These mountains gifted Crete with fertile plateaus like Lasithi, Omalos and Nidha,
caves like Diktaion and Idaion cave, and gorges like the famous Gorge of Samaria.

Hersonissos - Crete
Just 25 km east of the Iraklion. It keeps the
name of the ancient city (Λιµήν Χερσονήσου)
Χερσονήσου)
that was located in the place that the harbour
of Hersonissos is today.
The village of Old Hersonissos, located within
a small distance to the south was built due to
the fear of the pirates, that forced the
inhabitants of the village to move in the
inland.
Near Old Hersonisos there are two
picturesque small villages, Piskopiano and
Koutouloufari, overlooking the busy resort of
Limin Hersonissos.
