APRIL – MAY – JUNE 2013
Shipmates, by now we should be getting some relief
from winter, but it is hanging on! Things are heating up
at the club with the annual Lee Steinhoff Fish Fry on
Sunday, April 14th. There are still tickets available, see
one of our executive members for tickets.
Battle of Atlantic Banquet will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2013 in our
rental hall. Terri-Leigh is putting the final touches on the program for the
evening which promises to be a great evening. Watch for tickets at the bar.
Elections for executive and directors will be held at the
June general meeting with nominations being held at the
May general meeting. Duties for the various positions will
be posted with the general meeting minutes in the
clubroom to provide information on what is involved with
each position. If you think you may want to run for office
please make your intentions known. Don’t be shy, we
always can use the help.
The Yard Arm is now being produced electronically for distribution by email. If you would like a copy sent to you drop us an e-mail at
[email protected] and we will forward you a copy. Our website will also
have a link to the Yard Arm. Clubroom copies will be produced for reading
at the club.

Keep an eye on the calendar for other upcoming events and support the
efforts of your fellow shipmates.
PRESIDENT
MIKE EDWARDS
PAST PRESIDENT’S REPORT
As I am writing my part of the Log, spring has sprung only if you don’t
look outside. I think like most of us I have had enough snow shoveling. I
think that goofy rodent from up country should stuff his head up his you
know what and blow his head off. Who knows, ground hog stew might not
taste that bad.
Now getting to the club side of business. As most know, nominations
and elections are coming up very soon and we ask anyone wanting to run
as a director or on the executive side please let your intentions be known so
we can fill you in on what the position consists of so you are not going in
with cold feet. In the past many years we have had the same people
running every year. It would sure be nice to have new members step up to
the plate. It’s not that we don’t like what we are doing, it’s just that a
change is as good as a rest. As most of you know our President Mike
(Kahoona) Edwards is stepping down after many eons in that position. This
is a very important position as we all know, so please step up and let us
know.
It has been brought to my attention that language around the bar and in
the club is getting worse, especially the infamous f-bomb. This language
will no longer be tolerated in this club. If you want to use it, do it at home
and see how long you last there. From here on if you insist on using those
words you will be written up, whether you are a guest, member, director or
an executive member or even a bartender. It is up to all our shipmates to
3
keep an eye on this important matter. Anyone can write up a person using
foul language and let us know so we can deal with it.
There is one more thing. Don’t go running to another club like the legion
and berate any of our members or your club. If you are found to be doing
this you could be terminated, suspended or not accepted as a new
member. There will be signs posted all over the club reminding you of this
so there is no excuse.
Thank you for your attention.

also encourage you to invite a friend and/or neighbour to join our club,
keeping the great tradition of KW Naval Association thriving! Keep in mind,

YOU can do it!
Also, BIG Thank You to you, the membership for great support and
ideas! We need your support and participation!
MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR
BRENT JANTZI
SICK AND VISITING
Membership seems to be staying healthy, since our last log I haven’t
heard of any members reporting to sick bay.
That being said, we will check on our members who are getting along
okay since the last Log.
It was good to see Jan Scott and his wife Lori at the Valentine’s Dance,
although he was not dancing. I spoke to him and he says he is improving
each day. He has been to the club on other occasions but this was the first
time I have met him there.
5
Mamie Stinchcombe is back in town and now a resident at Westmount
Retirement Home. I have been down to see her on a couple of occasions.
A wonderful looking retirement home with plenty going on and she is
enjoying it very much. It was good to see her at the meeting in March.
Good to see Ernie Trapp at the club a couple of weeks ago. He is doing
okay.
Our condolences go out to Jack Gough and family on the loss of Jack’s
sister in early March.
Condolences also to the family of Edger Olinski, who passed away on
March 11 after a lengthy illness. He was a long time member of the Navy
Club.
Now to Doug and Herb. No change there. Herb says he will be going
home for Easter and hopes to be staying with his son. Again, I am not sure
as he has said it before, but hope it happens.
Doug is happy to be alone in his room and does
not seem to want to visit the club. I drop in every
once in a while.
Good to see Joe Doerner at the Friday night
suppers. He says he is holding his own and doing
okay.
I think that’s about it for now. Remember your
shipmates who are having problems and keep me
informed.

SPORTS
Since my last report a few things have happened at the club. Three
card tournaments have taken place. The first was a euchre tournament and
we had 4 teams play. A double round robin play was done. The second was
cribbage with 8 teams playing an 11 game tournament . The third card
tournament was solo with 29 players and a 9 game tournament was played.
I do not play solo or know anything about solo so thank you Vic Strauss for
helping me out. May I also add a good time was had by all players in the
three card tournaments.
Also in February the Super Bowl party was held. Chicken wings and
chili were served and lots of great prizes handed out that night. A good time
was had by all. A thank you to the following
shipmates for their help and donations to make
the Super Bowl party possible: Dennis Gow, Terry
Hartman, Christy Fraser, John and Charlene
Wastell and George Banister . Without your help
these events are not possible.
Coming events - chicken wings on April 13
being served from 3 to 6 or until they are all gone,
$6.00 a pound. Hope to see you there.
September 21, 2013 is Sports Day in
Woodstock, sign-up sheets will be up soon. Remember you must be a
member in good standing by the cutoff date in order to play. Also do not
forget to pay the $20 fee which is returned to you when you register at
Woodstock. Washoes is now a new an official sport for Sports Day and we
are allowed two two person teams to be entered.
Shipmates that is all I have to report. May your seas always be calm.

SOCIAL/WAYS AND MEANS
Ahoy Shipmates. Sorry I missed the last Log. All is well
with the horse races! Lots of new faces, lots of laughs!
Thanks to everyone involved in helping out when one of us
can’t make it in. We had some great weeks raising money for
the club. Hope to see you all on Saturday afternoons!

SERVICE OFFICER
On March 11, 2013 long term member Edward Olinski passed away.
We all knew him as Auggie. There was no visitation, but a memorial
service will be held. Information will be posted at the K.W.N.A. when the

not been around the club for the last couple of months.
Thank you so much Alma Harvey for looking after things for me. She has
done a wonderful job.
Thank you also to Marilyn Weiss for looking after the kitchen catering.
This is a big job and much appreciated. Again, what would we do without
Mel Barrie, John & Charlene Wastell. Thank you so much! The girls in the
kitchen also are doing a great job, thanks!
Don’t forget the annual Lee Steinhoff Fish Fry on April 14 th.
Did you get in on Doug Singbeil’s Famous Tacos on Saturday, March
16 ? I understand his tacos are to die for and it was a success.
th
Dennis Hilker is making chicken wings on Saturday, April 13 th. Come
out and enjoy a Saturday afternoon at your club. Horse races, meat draws
and good food!
May 5th is the Battle of the Atlantic parade. Please try to attend.
Hopefully the weather will cooperate. May 4 th is the Battle of the Atlantic

THE GALLEY
Once again, thank you to all the volunteers for making themselves
available in the galley.
Catering has been quiet since Christmas, but things are picking up for
April and May. Having said that, we will be looking for help for a Wedding
Rehearsal Dinner, followed by the Wedding Reception the next day. Also,
the year-end Dart Banquet is approaching in May as well as the Battle of
the Atlantic Banquet. So as you can see, we will be requiring many helping
hands.
If you are interested and/or able to help out, please let me know.
Breakfasts, Friday night dinners and spaghetti have all been very well
attended by our members and guests to the club. Thank you for all your
support.

Navy Traditions and Customs
Nautical Terms and Phrases - Their Meaning and Origin
Binnacle List
A ship's sick-list. A binnacle was the stand on which the ship's
compass was mounted. In the eighteenth century and probably
before, a list was given to the officer or mate of the watch,
containing the names of men unable to report for duty. The list
was kept at the binnacle.
Clean Bill of Health
This widely used term has its origins in the document issued to a
ship showing that the port it sailed from suffered from no
epidemic or infection at the time of departure.
Coxswain
A coxswain or cockswain was at first the swain (boy servant) in
charge of the small cock or cockboat that was kept aboard for the
ship's captain and which was used to row him to and from the
ship. The term has been in use in England dating back to at least
1463. With the passing of time the coxswain became the
helmsman of any boat, regardless of size.
Down the hatch
Here's a drinking expression that seems to have its origins in sea
freight, where cargoes are lowered into the hatch. First used by
seamen, it has only been traced back to the turn of the century.
Duffle
A name given to a Sailor's personal effects. Also spelled duffel, it
referred to his principal clothing as well as to the seabag in which
he carried and stowed it. The term comes from the Flemish town
of Duffel near Antwerp, and denotes a rough woolen cloth made
there.
Dungarees
The modern Sailor's work clothes. The term is not modern,
however, but dates to the 18th century and comes from the Hindi
19
word dungri, for a type of Indian cotton cloth.
Fathom
Although a fathom is now a nautical unit of length equal to six
feet, it was once defined by an act of Parliament as "the length of
a man's arms around the object of his affections." The word
derives from the Old English Faethm, which means "embracing
arms."
Flying Dutchman
One superstition has it that any mariner who sees the ghost ship
called the Flying Dutchman will die within the day. The tale of the
Flying Dutchman trying to round the Cape of Good Hope against
strong winds and never succeeding, then trying to make Cape
Horn and failing there too, has been the most famous of maritime
ghost stories for more 300 years. The cursed spectral ship sailing
back and forth on its endless voyage, its ancient white-hair crew
crying for help while hauling at her sail, inspired Samuel Taylor
Coleridge to write his classic "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," to
name but one famous literary work. The real Flying Dutchman is
supposed to have set sail in 1660.
Fouled anchor
The fouled (rope- or chain-entwined) anchor so prevalent in our
Navy's designs and insignia is a symbol at least 500 years old that
has it origins in the British traditions adopted by our naval
service.
The fouled anchor was adopted as the official seal of Lord High
Admiral Charles Lord Howard of Effingham during the late 1500s.
A variation of the seal had been in use by the Lord High Admiral
of Scotland about a century earlier.
The anchor (both with and without the entwined rope) is a
traditional heraldic device used in ancient British coats of arms. As
a heraldic device, it is a stylized representation used merely for its
decorative effect.
20
Mayday
The distress call for voice radio, for vessels and people in serious
trouble at sea. The term was made official by an international
telecommunications conference in 1948, and is an anglicizing of
the French "m'aidez," (help me).
Port and starboard
Port and starboard are shipboard terms for left and right,
respectively. Confusing those two could cause a ship wreck. In
Old England, the starboard was the steering paddle or rudder, and
ships were always steered from the right side on the back of the
vessel. Larboard referred to the left side, the side on which the
ship was loaded. So how did larboard become port? Shouted over
the noise of the wind and the waves, larboard and starboard
sounded too much alike. The word port means the opening in the
"left" side of the ship from which cargo was unloaded. Sailors
eventually started using the term to refer to that side of the ship.
Use of the term "port" was officially adopted by the U.S. Navy by
General Order, 18 February 1846.
Scuttlebutt
The cask of drinking water on ships was called a scuttlebutt and
since Sailors exchanged gossip when they gathered at the
scuttlebutt for a drink of water, scuttlebutt became U.S. Navy
slang for gossip or rumors. A butt was a wooden cask which held
water or other liquids; to scuttle is to drill a hole, as for tapping a
cask.
Shows his true colors
Early warships often carried flags from many nations on board in
order to elude or deceive the enemy. The rules of civilized warfare
called for all ships to hoist their true national ensigns before firing
a shot. Someone who finally "shows his true colors" is acting like
a man-of-war which hailed another ship flying one flag, but then
hoisted their own when they got in firing range.
Striking the Flag Striking the ensign was and is the universally
recognized indication of surrender.
